Backyardigans music

We have the Backyardigans Born to Play CD, and the kids favorite song is "Worm and Polka". Here's Austin's reaction when the music comes on:

Sorry about the bad lighting - who knew a moving car wasn't the best placed to shoot video!

Wii had a fun Christmas!

Hope you did too!!!

At the beginning of November, I bought Derek a Wii for Christmas and haven't said a word about it to him. Then about a week before Christmas he tells me he thinks we should buy a Wii as a family gift. I had to try to figure out how to talk him out of it without letting on that there was one hiding in my closet. I must have done a convincing job because he was very surprised! I'm not sure who's liking it more though - Derek or Bryce!

Here are some more fun Christmas pics!

It could be worse

It's good I posted on why I like living here when I did because by the next day (and every subsequent freezing day since) all I could think of were reasons we should MOVE! But, then my parents sent me these pictures and I realized - it could be worse!
This is their patio table! This is my dad clearing the driveway - the snow is to the top of the blower.

Top Ten List: Why we like living here

Today my thermostat didn't move out of the single digits. I woke up to -3 below and the news said the wind sheer was -26! Derek was in California and I considered having him tell Stater Bros he was coming to work for them and the kids and I would meet him in Sunny CA! Then I remembered we'd never be able to sell our house in this market... Anyway, I've spent the day thinking of why we like it here - and we do like it - and here are a few things I came up with.

1. We've made some really GREAT friends.

2. My brothers are 1 and 2 hours away, close enough to do holiday's together and see frequently, but not so close we have to babysit each other's kids every weekend.

3. Affordable cost of living. We could never afford this house if it were in California (or almost anywhere else major CPG companies are located).

4. There are no cockroaches here.

5. I love my neighborhood and have awesome neighbors. We have big, mature trees, nationally recognized schools and easy access to shopping and the freeway.

6. People in Omaha are so friendly. Even government workers! I've never had such a positive, and fast experience at the DMV. And today I was at the post office, along with 30 other people, and a lady a few people in front of me insisted I go ahead of her when she saw I was juggling boxes while entertaining Austin. Then I went to the grocery store and was bundling up to go out with my baby and groceries when one of the employees came to my rescue and carried my bag out into the freezing cold to my car for me (obviously, this wasn't at Walmart) . Then I told him how much I appreciated it and he patted my arm (in a very grandfatherly, NOT creepy way) and said, "You're welcome, young lady." Now, I ask you - who wouldn't like that!!!

7. We have a great, and huge, church ward and
the beautiful Winter Quarters temple is 20 minutes away.

8. The zoo here is one of the best I've ever seen - DC is probably better, but only because they've got Pandas.

9. On most days Derek likes his job. And I like the few hours I spend at mine too.

10. Despite weather that sucks 3/4 of the year,
our family is really happy here!!!

So - as my kids bounced off the walls all afternoon from being cooped up all day, this is what I thought about. Some things are intangible and while they may seem insignificant, when added up they make it all worth it, or so I tell myself. After all we're here for the long haul, so we'd better get used to it!

Bryce turns 5

Bryce turned 5 today. I can't believe it. How did this happen? Five is so big! To celebrate we had his cousins over. Their parents are in Spain right now, so Grandma Buell is watching them and she came to. It was fitting to have her here since she was there 5 years ago. (note: Grandma Buell is a very close friend but is not actually related, but it's just a minor technicality. She is a trained L&D nurse who has been at both of my children's births) Bryce's grand arrival happened the day before his due date and everything was very routine, except for the size of my baby. 9 pounds 14 ounces, and no - I did not have a c-section, and that boy's head was PERFECTLY round. Everyone in the room was guessing how much they thought he weighed and when the nurse announced it, Grma Buell summed it up nicely with an, "Oh, good grief". If you've never seen a 10 pound newborn, it's something else. A ten pound baby is just huge and fat and pink and so stinkin' cute you can't even imagine. We had no idea that day how much our lives were about to change and now we couldn't imagine life without him!

Bryce was so happy that today was his long awaited for birthday. He absolutely loved getting sung to in Primary and couldn't wait for his party. We had pizza for dinner, which I am so happy to say he actually ate.We also had a race track cake:He and his cousins are such good friends, Sam cried when they had to leave. It was a fun day for him! Happy Birthday Bryce!!!
And for good measure since I haven't posted many pictures lately- Austin wore a new outfit to church today that I thought he looked just darling in:

Thanksgiving: Highlights and Lowlights

Highlight #1: Only having 1 half hour stop during an 8 hour driving day.
Highlight #2: Our friends the Brudnicki's driving up from Austin to see us, and staying at Great Wolf Lodge where we got to go swim with them!
Highlight #3: Seeing Twilight (with my cute 15 year old sister-in-law Jenna)
Highlight #4: Chick-fil-a x3 (we don't have them here, it's very sad - I know)
Highlight #5: Seeing so many of our Texas friends.
Highlight #6: Being able to play outside again!
Highlight #7: Black Friday shopping deals - I'm almost done with my x-mas shopping.
Highlight #8: Staying with the Buells in KC, where Mike adjusted my back - snap, crackle, pop.

Lowlight #1: 11 hours of total driving one way
Lowlight #2: Austin sending my mother-in-law's gravy bowl, which she's had since she got married 31 years ago, crashing to the floor, where it shattered.
Lowlight #3: Loosing my camera only to find it stashed underneath the passenger seat of my car (?) on the drive home, so I don't have any pictures.
Lowlight #4: Having a pair of pants that fit when we went down and are now too tight after all that eating!

We had a great Thanksgiving and so much fun in Texas. We loved watching the Longhorns and the Cowboys win their games. We had fun seeing so many people, we loved eating all the good food and really enjoyed the great weather. While we were dreading returning to the arctic tundra we call home, it really is good to be back!

From the mouth of babes

Picture this coming out of the mouth of my 4 year old:
Bryce: "Mom, what's this?" (holding up my bracelet)
Me: "It's a bracelet."
Bryce: "No, it's an ecsexory."
Me: (Laughing hysterically) "Where did you learn that word?"
Bryce: "I accidentally learned it from Max and Ruby."

That darn Ruby - teaching my boy those big words!

Twilight: The Movie

Several years ago my sister-in-law Rachel introduced me to the Twilight series and I was hooked. This was before all the sequels - so after I finished Twilight, and loved it, I had no where else to go. I finally figured out New Moon was available (and I fell in love with Jacob), then came Eclipse and finally Breaking Dawn (which I didn't love - it was my least favorite of the 4). What I'm trying to say is I didn't have the option of reading all 4 novels together, I had to wait, and this was good and bad. I really got to think about how I felt about the characters and what I thought was best for Bella, but I hated waiting. So anyway - now the movie is coming out and part of me is wanting to see it and the other part of me watches the previews and goes, "Oh no, they've ruined it." I know there's been all kinds of hoopla about the guy they choose to play Edward and while I think he's a perfectly nice looking boy, my Edward is much better looking. So I want to know from all of you Twilight fans out there - are you looking forward to the movie or are you worried it will ruin the books for you?

Baby it's cold outside

And unfortunately it's cold inside too. We had our fall furnace maintenance on Friday and they discovered our heat exchanger is cracked, which is apparently the life of the furnace, and the whole thing has to be replaced. Unfortunately, we discovered this at 6:00 on a Friday night and because carbon monoxide can leak through the crack and into our home the unit can't be turned on again until it's replaced. The good news is, we're getting a new heater and it's all covered by our Homeowners Warranty (which we extended exactly for this reason). The bad news is- WE HAVE NO HEAT until a new furnace is installed after the weekend. We met with the "comfort coordinator" today and picked out our new furnace and it should be installed hopefully by Wednesday. Until then this is what the temperature looks like here:

Our bedroom last night was down to 58 and as you can see, we didn't make it out of the lower 30's outside today. We're able to keep fairly comfortable inside with the use of these:And our awesome neighbors loaned us a radiant heater also. So wherever we go, we just take a space heater with us and plug it in. So it's a huge inconvenience and I wished they'd come out two weeks ago (when I'd originally scheduled it before Service One rescheduled) - we are happy we don't have to pay for it and now we don't have to worry about it anymore. And I'm also enjoying our fireplace and snuggling with my honey on a cold winter's day!!!

"Healthy" kids

Lately I've been trying to feed my kids better. My first step in doing this was to eliminate sugared cereal from our morning routine. In the past we've been known to have yummy sugary sweetness like Frosted Flakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Reese's Puffs (Bryce's personal favorite, which he calls meatball cereal). So I've replaced them with Kix (light meatballs), Chex and Life. The result - my kids aren't eating breakfast now. I tried oatmeal this morning and neither kid touched it. Austin has decided his morning isn't complete without a Go-gurt (ultra-sugary yogurt right there) and Bryce has his bubba and a few bites of the "grown up" cereal. Any suggestions on how to have a healthier breakfast they actually eat???

Hard Work

Derek undertook a big landscaping project this weekend, and it was a lot of backbreaking work (for him, I chased kids). Here's the before:
The first picture was taken when we bought the house. To get ready for this project we chopped down the 20 foot crab apple tree that was 3 feet from our house, hauled out the river rock and then tried to get up the courage to start digging! So far it looks pretty good - we still need some more dirt, the cap stones and mulch, but the hard part is done. Next week - he's doing another one where the tree used to be!

Halloween

Here are some pics from our Halloween. Derek and I had a costume party with some of his co-workers last weekend, so we even dressed up this year. My witch costume was the same costume I wore my senior year of high school - which was probably the last time I dressed up for Halloween. Austin and Bryce had a great time trick or treating. I was just going to take Austin around to the neighbors but when he saw Bryce leaving he stood at our screen door and screamed and banged on it until he got to go to. He did the whole route with Bryce, Derek and the neighborhood gaggle of kids. Fun fun! Happy Halloween.

Cleaning

Does anyone else feel like all they do is clean? I walked into my boys bathroom and this is what I found:
I mean honestly - my boys are 4 and 1, how messy could they be??? It's driving me crazy. I am really curious how many times a day other moms sweep their kitchen floor. Am I normal that I'm at a twice a day minimum??? My mother-in-law has this great trick of putting a rag or brillo-brush thing under her foot as she sweeps and when she comes to a sticky spot she scrubs it out with her foot. I am going all OCD on my kitchen floor lately - it's driving me crazy (have I already said that?)! And the bathrooms are a disaster. And then Austin, oh Austin, just is on top of the kitchen table all day long, and if he's up there EVERYTHING else is on the floor. The diaper bag is emptied multiple times a day, as is my wallet. It is his goal in life to ensure that anything and everything within his reach is pulled to the floor. I'm about at wits end - please tell me I'm not alone out there!!!!

Austin and his Pacifier

Lately this has been a familiar sight around our house:Austin is more attached to his pacifier now than he ever has been before. I am not a pacifier fan. I would have liked if he'd never taken it, but he was one of those babies that NEEDED it. Well, since I weaned him and went on my trip his paci has become attached to him. He always wants to have it nearby. I was trying to reduce it to sleeping only, but he's started stashing them places, so I'll take one away, and he'll show up with another one. He's even got a sign for it and now will sign "Where's paci?" by putting his palm up (like we'd do for "where is it?", or "I don't know") and then he acts like he's putting it in his mouth. It's really quite funny and cute, if I didn't dislike the nasty little thing so much. Any tips on how to get him off this would be appreciated!!!
On a side note - my friend Trinity took the above picture of Austin and there are some more great ones of both my boys. Here's are a few more. She did a great job - Thanks Trin!!!

Cute and Cozy in Maine

I just had an awesome weekend visiting my friend Sara in Maine. I feel I should warn you that this is not going to be a short or concise post. If you'd like to stop reading now, I'll give you the Reader's Digest version of my weekend: I flew to Maine, saw my friend, went hiking, had fun and flew home.

Here's the longer version of the story - but to tell it I need to back up a few, well, years.About 4 years ago I read an article about Acadia National Park and knew it was somewhere I wanted to go. I started telling Derek that we were going to take a trip there in Fall of 2008, but lets just say he wasn't as enthusiastic about the trip as I was. Separately, for about the same amount of time I've been wanting to go visit my college roommate Sara, something Derek has whole heartily supported, but the timing has never been right. I've either been pregnant, nursing, moving, or in school (and broke) or Sara has had conflict. Fast forward to Sept. 29th and I get an email from Sara saying she's moved to Maine. Suddenly my two trips have become one and I'm going! So two and a half weeks after I found out she'd moved there I hopped on a plane and made my way to Maine.
I went on this trip for 3 reasons. 1. To see Sara. 2. To see Maine. 3. To take a vacation. I accomplished all three! I'm currently reading the book Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (and it's really thought provoking and interesting) and she talks about how as Americans we have to convince ourselves, and others, we deserve a special treat. That we have "earned" it. And because of this we have a hard time relaxing and enjoying sheer pleasure. So I thought about this and decided I'm not going to justify my trip to anyone, and I'm going to enjoy my time in Maine, with my friend, away from my family without guilt. Now, of course every now and then guilt tried to slip in, but I think I did a pretty good job of really enjoying myself.

Thursday when I landed it was raining, so that afternoon was kind of shot. Sara and I went to dinner and then went shopping that night, and stayed up talking and watching movies.

Friday morning she took off for work and I stayed in bed. Derek called around 8:30 and woke me up, so I got up and was reading my book when I decided I was still tired - so back to bed I went. Sara called at 11 and woke me up! I felt like I was a teenager again, sleeping in so late. So she came home around noon and we had lunch then I went downtown with her. She works for the state as an Epidemiologist and her office is downtown Augusta, population 18,000. So she headed to her office building and I headed the opposite direction for the Kennebec River Rail Trail, which is just like it sounds - a trail that runs parallel with the river and the railroad. There are trees EVERYWHERE in Maine and they're all different shades of fall colors. I took a 2 mile walk to a town called Hallowell, population 200, where the trail runs through the "main" (the only) street of town. The street is lined with the cutest shops, and the stores are on the bottom and people live above them. I stopped in antique shops, little restaurants, clothing boutiques and the cutest little bakery where I got a Cranberry Almond Oatmeal "cookie" that was more like a biscuit and the size of my head (it's my goal to figure out a similar recipe). In one of the shops, called Paper Kicks, they had some made in Maine preserves and other kinds of food. I asked the store keeper about them and she said I had to try to Roasted Garlic and Onion spread. OK, for those who know me well know I HATE onions with a wild hot burning passion. I don't like the flavor, the texture, the crunch, the smell - I don't like them sauteed, I don't like them in things, or on things, I hate being told, "You can barely taste them" (to which I ask, then why add them?) I really really really don't like them. So I wasn't about to fork over $8 for this little jar, but I did select several other things to purchase and took them up to the counter. This feisty New Englander took one look at my items and said, "Fine, if you're not going to buy it, I'm buying the damn thing for you because you've just got to try it." And she did, even over my protests. It was so nice of her, and we had such a fun conversation. It was neat - I'm not sure how else to put it. The people in Maine seemed so happy. I think it's because it's impossible to talk the way they do without smiling. Honestly - I every time I'd talk to someone I'd think, "I wonder where they're from." and then I'd realize - they're from HERE. Sara says there are too kinds of Maine residents - those who are from Here and those who are from Away. Needless to say, I got the card from the store and am going to write back after we try this spread to let her know what we think. Derek was excited when he saw it - poor guy LOVES onions and never gets them in my cooking. So after several hours in Hallowell I walked back to Augusta, read my book in the park beneath the capital building, then went to the museum all about Maine. It was pretty interesting and since it was only $2 to get in I didn't feel like I had to pay too close of attention or spend too much time there. Sara got off work early and we got some food for dinner and headed back to her place. There is only one kind of grocery store in Augusta - Hannafords - so you'd better like what they have. Sara lives in a basement apartment of a large, very typical Maine home. There are three more apartments in the house. It is very quaint and yes, cute and cozy. I loved the architecture in Maine and I saw pretty much NO new construction (unlike Omaha) and if I did, it was all in the same New England style (colonial, cape cod, etc). Also - I'd say for every 4 street lights we have here, they'd only have one. So there's no light pollution and the night sky is just teeming with stars, even in town.

Saturday was such an awesome day. We drove about 2 hours to Acadia National Park. Once we were there we did 5 different hikes which took about 6 hours. It was a beautiful day - low 50's and clear beautiful skies. I experienced rising tide for the first time - on the way there we crossed a stream, on the way back we waded through a river. My favorite hike was up the Beehive, which wasn't so much hiking as it was climbing 500 feet up metal rungs to the top.
The view, oh the view, was breathtaking. I loved looking out and seeing the ocean. I tried to convince myself all weekend that we could move to Maine (surely LL Bean needs a brand manager!). Trinity, Jenn and Holly I wish you'd been there with your camera's and artistic eyes because you could have captured the beauty way better than I did, but I tried!

After an exhausting, but fun, day at the Park we drove home, ordered pizza and watched Enchanted, then we had to get up Sunday and drive back to Portland so I could catch the plane home. My dad is retired from Delta, so I pay a fraction of the cost for my ticket, but I fly standby and there's always a risk of not getting on, or worse - getting on then getting pulled off (which has happened several times). I consider myself an expert at standby travel. I know how to check flight loads, arrange which flights I want, have my back up plans ready and be prepared for the worst - but I hate every second of it. I've gotten better, but the day I fly I am always a big ball of anxiety. I hate pretty much every aspect of flying: I'm nervous about being late to the airport, I'm then nervous about whether I'll get on or not, then once I'm on - will they pull me off, then once they close the door I can't stand feeling as if I'm being shut into a flying coffin with all those other people, then once I'm off I usually have a connection I have to worry about, or if I'm home - did my bag make it, is someone here to meet me and did I forget anything? I really don't like flying. Sunday was no exception - when I checked in the agent told me there was only 1 seat left and they usually fly under weight restrictions (aka, they leave passengers behind even seats are open because those rinky-dink 50 seaters aren't made to carry passengers AND luggage). Fabulous. So I pace about in the tiny Portland airport and then - horray! - I got the LAST seat out. (Flights the rest of the day were either overbooked or showing even, and there were definitely more standby passengers trying to get out than there were seats available.) My connecting flight left with empty seats and then I was home, sweet, home. Bryce met me before I even walked through the door with, "Hi mom, I missed you, did you get me a present?" It was great to go, it was good to be back, and since I didn't get to see any lighthouses or go sailing - I can't wait to go back next year! Thanks to my awesome neighbor Heidi for taking my kids for 2 days, my sweet husband for being cool with temporary abandonment and Sara for showing me such a fun time!

Picture Tag

My friend Niki tagged me, so I thought I'd go along with it. So for this tag, you go to your pictures and open the fourth file and post the fourth picture. Here's my picture:

This was taken the summer of 2006 out at my parents place on Lake Coeur d'Alene. Derek had just finished his internship with ConAgra and it had been a long, lonely summer for me and this trip was such a highlight! My parents place is a trailer in a trailer park on Sun-Up Bay. It's not fancy, but it's got an awesome view a private beach only members of the trailer park can use and the boat dock is right there and it's just really fabulous. So this picture is me and Bryce - who was 2 1/2 at the time - taken 8/21/2006. We were having a camp fire down on the beach with my parents. It was a super fun trip - I LOVE spending summers in Spokane, or more accurately on Lake Coeur d'Alene and the St. Joe River! Can you tell how much my freckles are showing in this shot!

Editor's Note (10/19/2014) I can't believe this picture was the one I pulled up.  It always makes me a little bit sad when I see this shot - even though it was taken at a fun time.  I was just barely pregnant on this trip and when I saw this picture on the camera after it was taken I thought how it was the first picture of me, Bryce and a new baby.  Two weeks later I miscarried, and this picture still brings back that sting just a little bit. I didn't want sympathy or for this picture tainted with a sad memory for others, which is why I didn't include my feelings on it originally, but in hindsight I'd like for that spark of life that still existed in this picture to be acknowledged, even if it went out a short time later.

Funny Boy Bryce

My friend Maren commented on my last post about how Bryce has a thing for my hair, and it got me thinking about some of his very funny little habits, and I thought I'd share. The first thing he wants every morning when he wakes up is a "Bubba", which is warmed up milk in a sippy cup (without a stopper). I don't mean sort of luke warm, I mean practically steaming. He gets 3 bubba's a day, and we have to limit them or that's all he'd have. For bubba #1 he gets a special treat - he can play with my hair while he drinks it. It's weird, I know, but oh well. Here is one of his bubba cups. Now, before you think I'm a terrible parent who's too cheap to buy my son a new cup - let me tell you, I did get a new one for him and he refused to drink from it. Apparently he likes the big hole so he can slurp it down quicker.

Another funny thing about Bryce are his imaginary friends, James and Beanna. Here's a picture of him with them. James is a train from the Thomas set. He's 6, his birthday is June 26 and he does very naughty things and he's super fast and they have a great time together. Beanna is 4, her birthday is Sept. 4 and she gets sick a lot, and needs help doing a lot of things. We're always waiting for her to go through doors and to catch up with us. She's smaller than Bryce and James, and I have no idea where she came from. The three of them play pretty much every day. They don't live with us though - they go home and have moms and dads of their own.

Here are Oscar and Megan. They are bath toys that Bryce can't bathe with out. They've been with us since we moved here to Omaha.

This is Bryce's Hot Wheels toy. He got this when he was 2 and at the time we only had these few cars. We now have probably 40 hot wheels cars, but he thinks these are the ones that go with this toy, so we don't change them out or switch their positions. He's very meticulous about his toys and takes great care of them. We lost a cherry to Hi Ho Cherry-O and he wanted to throw the entire game out. He's a funny one.
And, for good measure, he's very creative. There's a Curious George episode where George builds a monkey web, so in honor of it, Bryce built a Bryce web.

Honey

Bryce to Derek: "Daddy, I'll be Daddy and you be Hon."

Derek: "OK, why am I Hon?"

Bryce: "Because, you don't have a name. Now Hon, you say, "Daddy do you want to play tag with me?"

Derek: "Daddy do you want to play tag with me?"

Bryce: "Sure Hon, you're it!"

---------------------

Bryce to Sheri (with hair still wet from the shower): "Mommy your hair smells like a fruit drink." And then he tried to bite it.

My husband did what?

One night Derek came home from work carrying these:

I thought to myself, "Did he really bring flowers for no reason at all?" and the answer was no, but it was even better - the first words out of his mouth were,

"Happy September 15th!"

I had forgotten our "anniversary". Since our wedding anniversary is in December and often gets over looked with the festivities of Christmas, we've taken to commemorating out first date which was September 15, 1999. Derek had not only remembered the date, but then acted on it and kept it a surprise - all very impressive things for a husband, don't you think! Well - I was impressed. So in memory of that day 9 years ago, I'd like to share what happened that fateful evening.

Picture it, Provo 1999. Derek actually didn't ask me out on our first date, his roommate asked us, on the spot, to double with him for dinner that night (it was a Wednesday). Neither one of us wanted to put ourselves out there too much incase the other was repulsed by the idea, so we hummed and hawed and said things like, "I'm OK going if you'd like to go." And finally we decided to go, along with another one of Derek's roommates. But before we left I had to do one very important thing -

change my shoes.

We drove in my car and followed his roommate. We were supposed to go to Frontier Pies, but then his date changed her mind and we drove to some Mexican place, but she didn't want to go there either, so then we went to some buffet, and that wasn't good either, so we went to Chili's and - you guessed it - not there either. Finally, we ended up at ... Frontier Pies. Shockingly this was the only date these two went on. So we get seated and ordered and we all have a really fun time. Most of you know me pretty well and know that I like to eat. In college I believed that if some guy wanted to pay for my dinner, who was I to stop him. At Frontier Pies they bring out cornbread at the beginning of your meal and it's pretty yummy, then I ordered a chicken salad - which was pretty good size, then this roommate decided he felt bad for making us drive all over so he offered to buy us pie. For those of you who've never been to Frontier Pies, they make a mean Jumble Berry Pie, and once again - if some guy wanted to fill my belly, I'd let him. So I had pie (and ice cream, I think). Derek told me later he'd never had a date eat so much and he had to decide whether he liked it or not. I didn't think anything of it honestly. So then we went back to my apartment and we start talking in my living room. Well, it was like Grand Central Station in there and Derek asked, "Do you want to go for a walk or something?", which sounded pretty good to me. When I went in my room to

change my shoes, again,

and my roommate Niki was in there. She said, "How's it going?" and all I said was, "We're going for a walk." and she grabbed my arm and said, "Sheri, this is serious." Looking back I've found that reaction to be very funny and like a bit of foreshadowing for my life! So we went walking on the paths behind the RB and on Maeser Hill and, for those of you who know both us, you can imagine how we just talked and talked and talked. It was a really fun first date - a lot of food and 3 pairs of shoes later I was home. And honestly, it was smooth sailing from there (other than me deserting him to go to Israel for a semester) and we got married 1 year, 3 months and 1 day later. Derek wooed me while we were dating. I'd find notes on my computer keyboard, flowers on my doorstep, my car mysteriously washed and vacuumed, and lots of other sweet things. But after we got married these things have naturally decreased in frequency, which made the flowers he brought home on the 15th that much better. It's been 9 years, 7 moves, multiple jobs and 2 children later - but those flowers reminded me of how it all started.

Good times, good times!

The impossible

Two things have been happening recently in our home that are noteworthy for our little family. The first is this:

Austin has been such a terrible sleeper until about 3 weeks ago when I tried this sleep training method my friend Taffy told me about and ever since then he's been sleeping through the night. It's the first time in OVER A YEAR I've had uninterrupted sleep. I'm a new woman. Thank you Taffy!!!
The second thing is this:

In case you can't tell what he's eating, it's a piece of pizza. For those of you who don't know, Bryce has a difficult relationship with food. It's beyond picky. It's been about 2 years since he ate pizza. He used to eat it all the time, but then one day decided he didn't like it anymore. Pizza's a hard food not to eat - it's every where, birthday parties, family get togethers, airports etc., so to have him elimate it from his diet was a real blow. Derek picked up a pizza for dinner last week and when I told Bryce that was for dinner he said, "Oh good, I love pizza." I thought, "Ya, right" but decided to capitalize on his sudden enthusiasm and told him if he ate an entire piece I'd give him a $$dollar$$ (nope, I'm not above bribery). So, we sat down for dinner and Bryce ate the entire piece, without leaving his chair. Derek and I were speechless. We scooped our jaws off the table and said, "That's great. Keep going. Good job." We didn't want to do anything to end this magical moment! And tonight Bryce asked, yes asked, if he could try a green bean. He's tried bites of the tomatoes and peppers from my "garden" (I use that term loosely). He's actually putting new food into his mouth lately. Could there really be a light at the end of the tunnel? Now - the kid's not about to sit down and eat a lasagna dinner, but we're definitely seeing improvement here. My kids are both sleeping and eating - does life get much better than this???

Cake Face

What kind of birthday would be complete without some cake. Austin thoroughly enjoyed eating his cupcake - it was a very different experience than watching Bryce eat his 1st Birthday cake, which essentially didn't happen. Austin was also funny about his presents. He knew they were new toys and they were his. He didn't hesitate to grab hold, stare his brother down and yell at him to get them back. He's becoming a terror - what happened to my sweet baby???
