It's not so easy to take a photo with one hand, but I've tried to demonstrate closing a split ring for Laurie from the needle_tat group to see.
After you've loaded on all your stitches for the ring, start pulling the core thread through while holding the stitches, just as if you were making a regular ring.
Put the needle through the loop that is coming up under your left hand, from back to front (or right to left) and continue pulling until the ring is closed.
Viola - a split ring.

Dimpled Ring
I had tried to tat a dimpled ring using instructions from the Internet, but was not able to get it to look like I wanted. At the Palmetto Tatters' Guild meeting Saturday, I asked one of the experienced tatters to show me...Thank you, Sharren! It was simple as pie - just needed to see it done, I guess.
The number of stitches is up to you, but for example
You may need to shape it a little with your finger(nail), but you should see the dimple.

Blocking Tatting
I've been searching for instructions on how to block a finished piece of tatting, and finally ran across this site. If you're interested in how to care for your tatted pieces, this is a good resource by Rachel Jackson.
After posting the previous, today in my bloglines hop I found Sharon has posted an excellent article with a wealth of information! Thanks a lot.
