So this year we decided to be a bit posh and organised ourselves a dinner.
We had to organise everything in one week. And in that one week we had approximately one meeting. One less than 2 hours meeting. And a whole morning of band practice the day before the dinner.... which we utilised just a bit to finish off bits and pieces.
I suppose... with all that preparation, how the dinner turned out was.... about as good as it can get....?
It could have been better if I'd a better memory.
So here are the events of the night. Which I should know because I was the emcee. Which I should remember because I had forgotten like a gamillion things that night.
*innocently* What? Of course we're willing to retire...!
I reached the club at about 5.30 after barging into Spring in a dinner dress (who in their right mind does that!?) to get a last minute gift... only to find out that the room wasn't opened. So we had to beg the management to open the door for us. When we got in, we started sticking the lucky draw stars on the chairs. Erica and I put 'em at the "bad feng shui" seats. ;)
When the musical chairs game was on, the only thing we could think of was "Err... do those chairs have stars!?"
Then Estella and her anak arrived after practice so we halau-ed them to library. Then more people started arriving we couldn't halau them anymore. Then the LCD wouldn't work so we panicked. Well I did. So the problem dragged on until Ginny said just start.
So Dae and I got up shakily because we didn't have time to run over our script... which we prepared for like 30 minutes the DAY BEFORE. So ya, all hell broke lose.
Marilyn doing damage control
On the stage,
Me: Are you gonna do the bang glass thing?
Dae: Oh! *runs down to get the glass*
Me: *looks at script for one last time*
Down below: Marilyn: Dae, don't break it ar!
Dae: *got up and bang the glass* Ting ting ting ting ting CRACK!
Me: *looks up in surprise* *GASP!* DAE! *mortified look*
Down below: Juniors clapped and cheered wildly.
Us: *hide face*
That was how we started the dinner. With Dae breaking the glass. Just like in movies.
I can't believe the juniors clapped.
I lagi can't believe that the first thing that crossed some juniors mind was: Lipyi broke it!
.... Ok... maybe I can believe the second part. I have a history in breaking things after all....
But Dae and I were so mortified we didn't even dare to look at Pn Kong or Mr Marvin's faces.
Me: Wel...Wel... Welcome. To. The. *pause and look at paper* Band AGM Installation Dinner.
And that was the beginning of my night as a horrible emcee.
I haven't got a lot of pictures so... bear with the poor ones I'd managed to capture in a rush.
There were speeches. Which I couldn't pay attention to because I was still gaping with Dae over the broken glass. Then we had the Form 5 presentation, which was probably one of the few things that went well that night. After we got a backup LCD.
Then we had our performances.
Bad technical problems.
Estella and her laughing anaks. Funniest performance she'd seen, says Olivia. They laughed more than they sang! Hahaha!
And Stephanie and her models. They ended with the band cheer. Which I sorta forgot. A bit. A BIT. Amy kantoi-ed me.
Stephanie and her models
The order of the performances kept changing so I got a little confused. I lost track of the performers after awhile so I kinda had Alicia rushed her comrades out of the toilet. =.="
Me: Ok. Next up! The Ask Clar and Al group!
Down below: Alicia: WHAT!? NO!!!! *waves her hands "no" frantically*
Me: *blur* Err... yes?
Alicia: They're having toilet break!!
Me: Oh! Well you can't rush them...
*Alicia runs out*
Me: Oi! You can't rush people in toilet! Alicia!
*Alicia is out of sight*
Back in the room on stage: *awkward moment*
Bad jokes. Bad jokes. Bad jokes. Lipyi will never ever tell a joke again in her life. So Lipyi was so relief when the group reappeared in the room.
Then Alicia's guitar got out of tune so it was nightmare again.
Alicia: *mumbling* sth.. sth... Maxine.
Electric shocks in Lipyi's brain: Maxine!

The Ask Clar and Al group
After the group was set up, Lipyi ran to Ginny in horrendous realisation.
"Was Maxine's group before this!?"
So Lipyi slumped into her chair in that horrendous realisation and couldn't hear the songs anymore. Luckily I sneaked peak into their practice. =.=" Apparently that's all I'm gonna remember.
I didn't catch the title of their first song but their second song was "I will remember you". Maybe I shall text them in like a decade or so and see if they still remember me. :D (that is if I still remember them)
Anyway. We had games in between! We had two games but only one got carried out. That's the musical chair. It was supposed to be some dancing game but.... well.... never mind.... I think musical chair went fine... Amy basically pushed everyone away. :)
Then we had lucky draw but one star went missing so the Form 5s had to go through a really embarrassing session of er... "O-pek?" on stage. Unfortunately it's the star at the teachers' table that got lost because I think they took the chairs from the teachers' table for the game. Even Erica couldn't find where she'd put the star.
And then we had the last performance by The Bird and the Worm. The bird was so huge (Amy). Haha. But their performance was so cute. Amy did not do it justice when she told me it was lame. It was not lame!
They had shark (Christine), crab (Michelle Goh?), fish (Sabrina?), trouble and tear (Michelle Goh), er... sun... glow in the dark stars.... question mark (the mark got lost halfway I think... I saw them fumbling and then a christine appeared on stage shrugging ;p)..... oh apples! I like the crab claws. :D The crab even walked sideways!
Best performance of the night - The Bird and the Worm
So we awarded them the best performance of the night. :) They deserved it.
They had like this sign that spells "We'll miss u!" and they arranged it wrongly on stage. It read like "ss mi We' ll u!" for 5 seconds before they rearranged themselves. Hahahaha. So cute.
Then we had the AGM and Joanna ended the night with her big finale song. =)
Joanna! :D
At least the night ended well. :)
I wish I had paid more attention to things so that the night isn't just a blur and haunting with my mistakes in my mind. Sorry for the mistakes, by the way. A thousand apologies! But I suppose everyone else had fun (at least they told me they did) and that's all that mattered I guess.
So my band years are over and I'll admit I have band to thank for a lot of things. A large portion of who I am today is because of band - my musical skills, my voice (yes, my big voice is trained from band believe it or not), my guts (I used to really bad stage fright... now I just have bad stage fright ;p), my friends. The same friends who will never let me forget that for a month when I was 13, I discouraged them from joining band.
I ended up joining band a month after that. How ironic.
Form 1 feels like ages ago. I wonder if anyone still remembers the atrocity of my rhythm back then. Or the days when tubists are allowed to march with euphonium. I think I crushed that dream in all my juniors to come because the tradition stopped with me. :P Apparently I'm the only junior that played the tuba from the very start without a transition period in euphonium, hence I couldn't play the euphonium, hence no marching with euphonium (I did though... once or twice. Bad memory with a lot of wrong notes -.-").
See, I've watched seniors leave for 4 years and it never really feels like a lot of things are changing. If anything, I think we may have felt excited to see the new committee. So that must be how the juniors are feeling now too. But now that I'm leaving... it sorta feels like the whole world's changing.
Ok. That's enough emo-ing.
Thank you, band and all its people and elements, for well.... everything. =)
