Big Boy Lane

It's official. Lane-O, as Kara calls him, is a big boy!

Lots of changes going on in his life, and he's handling them all so well. So well that I keep questioning whether it's real or not. His second birthday is approaching fast--April 29 will be here before we know it! And we're celebrating his 2nd and Kara's 4th birthdays at Disney World!

We've been planning this trip for a long time--since their last birthdays actually. I promised Kara that she wouldn't have a birthday party this year, but instead, we would take her to meet the princesses and to visit Cinderella's castle. She hasn't forgotten and has almost talked about it every.single.day. You think she's excited?

I was hoping Lane would be interested in using the potty before his 2nd birthday, and before the big trip. The e-book, 3 Day Potty Training, we used when Kara was learning to use the potty recommended training them at 22 months.

So Lane reached 22 months the end of February. He was telling us sometimes when he would mess up his diapers. But what did it for me was the fact alone that he communicated well to us. He's so eager to learn new things, so why not teach him all about pottying.

This whole potty training experience was entirely different from our experience with Kara. I'm still blown away at how smooth the training went.

We put Lane through "potty boot camp" last Saturday and by Monday, it had clicked! Amazing. We started out not using Pull-Ups. I would wake him up before I went to bed to let him potty and by morning, he was still dry. He's such a good sleeper, so we decided to stop interrupting his sleep and just let him sleep in a Pull-Up. Didn't phase him!

Pooping (yes, I'm saying that word in this blog!) took a few extra days to master in the potty. But since this past Saturday, he's got that down, too. All it took was M&Ms and a $1 Elmo stamper that I found at Target the week before. It's so nice to be diaper-free around here again!

Another part of turning big boy--a new bed! Well, it's new to Lane. We had converted his crib into a bed a few months back, and again, he did amazingly well with that transition.

Justin sanded and painted some of his father's furniture that he had used as a child. He did a great job! He has way more patience than me to paint all that furniture. I only managed to paint Lane's room, well, paint three of the four walls at least. Whew--that was not fun.

Here is the before shot. Now keep in mind this was taken when we first bought our house...pre-children. Lane's room was actually a pale green with baby furniture. But at least you can see the stain of the furniture pre-Justin's hard work!
Now check out Lane's room...
Such a difference a little paint makes! I love it. And if you can't tell, Lane loooves it, too. We could hardly get the mattresses set up and sheets on. He kept throwing on the pillows, his nite-nites and climbing on. Over and over.

It was naptime, and he was putting on a little Chapstick.
So, of course, Kara had to get some, too.
We've been busy around here! But I'm very happy with how Lane's room turned out. The walls are bare, but I'm working on that! He had a UGA football poster up for a while, but eventually it fell. Maybe I'll try it again. Ideas are welcome!

I'm very proud of my big boy...and his big sister!

Hope you all are having a great week. Aren't you impressed that I've managed to blog three times so far in March! Ha! Just had to mention it!

Spring Fever

We are loving this weather! And loving the fenced in backyard. I decided to snap a few pictures today...that's a first in a while!

Kara's doing so good swinging all by herself...
Lane loves a hat...wish you could hear him saying "cheeeeese."
Brownie...
I promise that I don't always coordinate their clothes. But today was St. Patrick's Day! Green was a must.

Enjoy all this sunshine!

A Healthy Treat!

I was told recently that I've been a very bad blogger. Well, it's true.

So to help make up for being slack, I thought I'd share a little treat with you--a recipe. "Ha!" Was that your initial reaction? You know me too well.

I do not enjoy cooking, but this is different, because cooking isn't even involved. So I actually like this recipe!

My latest addiction has been fruit smoothies. I don't have an official name for this smoothie, so you'll have to try it for yourself and help me come up with a good name!

Here goes...

3/4 cup crushed ice
3-4 strawberries cut up
1/2 or whole banana cut into fourths
8-oz Greek yogurt
1 cup skim milk
1 tsp. ground flaxseed

Blend. This usually makes enough for one large cup for myself, plus a small cup for Lane. Kara won't drink it.

Nutrition wise--it's a great snack! The skim milk has 90 calories and 9 grams of protein. And why use Greek yogurt? Protein! Chobani Plain Greek Yogurt has 130 calories and 17 grams of protein! And the omega-3 fats from the flaxseed is a bonus, too.

Perfect for a pre- or post-workout snack! I prefer post-workout though, because it sits a little too heavy on the stomach, especially when I'm bouncing around during Jazzercise!

You can easily change it up a little by adding whatever fresh fruit you might have on hand. I've also thought about adding honey. This is so easy...even I can't mess it up!

For more smoothie recipes, try wholeliving.com (thanks Caroline and Heather!) for the link! Apparently, I was meant to look at that site since two of my favorite friends recommended it.

Enjoy your fruit smoothie! If you have any good smoothie recipes, please share!

I'm a Southern Saver!

Finally...I think I'm getting this couponing thing!

I started clipping coupons this summer, but I think I was more into the organization part of it than the actual saving money part! I bought my little notebook, baseball card holders and the cutest dividers any notebook has ever seen.

Then, came the need for a Sunday paper. I pretty much grabbed the coupon inserts and ignored the rest. I only clipped the coupons that I might use, nothing extra. I was saving a few dollars each visit to Publix, but at least $20 each Target visit. That's good, right?

Saving gets way better than that! Every where I go, someone is talking about southernsavers.com. I had looked on the site and clipped online coupons before, but never really got serious about saving. But the last few weeks, I've been trying to coupon the "Southern Saver" way.

I still have a lot to learn, but I've figured out the key: don't make your shopping list based on what you need or what you're out of, instead, create your list based on what's on sale!

Southernsavers.com posts products according to each store only when they're at their lowest price. So the last few weeks, I've checked the site and added the products that we use to my grocery list. Then, I match up the coupons.

I went to Publix today and had my best total savings to date, and I have my receipt to prove it! I spent $38.03 and saved $30.36. I think that's pretty good! And yes, I bought a few things that weren't on sale like fruit and milk. Bread was even on sale.

I learned an important lesson though...when an item is buy one, get one free, I can use a coupon for both products. I just need to remember to clip two coupons for each item that's BOGO.

That's about all I'm going to say about couponing. I'll leave the rest up to the experts.

I'll try to post at the end of the month my total grocery bill for November. It will be interesting to compare it with October's total. We'll see! Stay tuned...

LONG Overdue!

Yes, it's been over a month since I've blogged. I really don't have a good excuse except that I've been a little busy--haven't we all!

I have so many things I'd like to share, but I'm going to start with Halloween memories...because Halloween was over a week ago, and let's face it, at the rate I'm going it will be Christmas if I keep postponing!

Here are my little trick-or-treaters...

Minnie and Mickey!

Thanks to our babysitter, Megan, for the idea last year!

Kara thought it was fun to pull Lane's tail...

Lane giving his Aunt Kathy one of his sweet hugs...

He knows who to "butter up!"

We spent the evening at Antioch's annual Trick or Trunk. Lots of fun! Kara and Leah rode in one of the Ten Commandment barrels... ; )

Friends and cousins!

If you've run out of Halloween candy, please stop by and grab a handful out of Kara and Lane's pumpkins. They're still overflowing with candy. But I'll admit...the Twix, Snickers and Baby Ruths are gone!

It's good to be back. Now, I have some catching up to do on reading your blogs!

More soon. And by soon, I mean before December and hopefully before Thanksgiving!

Fair Time

Since I've been MIA this month, I've got a treat for you...TWO posts today! Wow. That's a record for me.

And this really is a treat, because I have a video to share of Kara at the Gwinnett County Fair last night. It's super cute! And I can guarantee you that you'll smile and laugh along.

Justin and I took the kids to the fair last night. They had a ball! It was a late night, but totally worth it.

The kids watched their Pa-Pa show his Shorthorns, including one little guy who is showing a calf for him this year, Bryce. He is cute as a button (I'm sure as a 6th-grader, he really loves hearing that)! Seriously, if I were the judge, Bryce would win Grand Champion just for being the cutest showman ever!

He won 2nd in showmanship--this was only his 2nd show! He works more with his calf, Raspberry, than any of the other kids who have shown for Daddy in the past. I love his excitement about showing cows! We'll see if Kara and Lane are that into it in a few years. I can't wait!

On to more fun...

Kara got to be Miss Nicole's helper at the Mobile Dairy Classroom.

This child loved him some lemonade! So did me and Justin...it was really good.

Bob the Builder with a new friend.

Lane tried his best to pull this poor calf's green ear tag.

On to the finale...Kara asked us, at least, a hundred times to get on the "jumpy thing." It was $5 for 2 minutes, but Justin and I both agreed that was the best $5 spent all night.

Turn your volume up! And I promise, it will be a happy scream that you'll hear, not a scared one!

Enjoy your weekend!
