Notes:
CD Rip | APE File | EAC Log & Cue |

Comment:
Following the success of Blue Lights in the Basement in early 1978, Roberta Flack released this self-titled album late that same year on Atlantic. It featured the single "If Ever I See You Again," written by Joe Brooks, who penned Debby Boone's massive hit "You Light Up My Life." The song peaked at No. 24 on the Pop Singles Chart, No. 37 on the R&B Singles Chart, and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. Produced by Jerry Greenberg, Joseph Ferla, Joe Brooks, and Rubina Flake, the album reached No. 74 on the Pop Albums Chart and No. 37 on the R&B Albums Chart. "When It's Over" and "You Are Everything" reached No. 82 and No. 98 on the R&B Singles Chart, respectively.

Roberta Flack is the only album in Roberta's Atlantic catalogue that has never been reissued on CD in the US. Only available on compact disc in Japan for a time, it is now highly collectible in the CD format.

Comment/Note:
The liner notes that accompany this collection note that '70s soul music has never really gotten its due. One could argue that point for days, but hubris aside, there's no denying that Can You Dig It pays serious homage to the golden years of American soul. The new box set contains 6 CDs and 136 cuts, 65 of which hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B and/or pop charts. As you'd expect with a project that mines such a rich era (the CDs are compiled chronologically), it represents a who's who of stars. Among the notables: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, James Brown, Chairmen of the Board, Laura Lee, Freda Payne, and Jean Knight. Lesser lights also get to shine, i.e., El Chicano, who deliver the salsafied hippie anthem "Tell Her She's Lovely." But let's be honest-the selling point is the hits, and from the uplifting "Ooh Child" to the sassy "Want Ads," if you grew up in the '70s (hands up), then these tracks are beloved. Sure, the hard-core fan will probably wish for more obscurities, and the exclusion of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and George Clinton is troublesome, but anyone wanting an at-home jukebox loaded with classic R&B will certainly dig this.

Vincent Montana Jr.

''That’s What Love Does'' 12''
FEATURING WILLIAM “SMOKE” HOWARD / MAXI-SINGLE (2006)

Note:
Is recommended to anyone who has never heard it but has even the slightest interest in the sound of 70's classic Philly Soul. Track #2, The original version of the song, Is a perfect example of Vincent Montana Jr’s expertise for the intricate crafting and production responsible for the lush background environment in many Philly classics by artists such as M.F.S.B, The Salsoul Orchestra, The Philly Sound Orchestra, The Montana Sextet and many others. The vocals are provided by William “Smoke” Howard whom was with Philadelphia International Records 70's group”The Ebonys“. Smoke’s vocals blend perfectly alongside the instrumentation with Montana on vibes which are crystal clear and right up out front of the track. Great mastering of a great tune long with remixes including an instrumental version & vibe solo.

Tracklisting:
1 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Club Vox)
2 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Original Mix)
3 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Classic Dub)
4 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Reprise Dub)
5 – That’s What Love Does (Vibeapella)
6 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Instrumental)
7 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Radio Edit)

Short comment:
William Howard, known as "SMOKE", a veteran performer, is a soulful entertainment messenger of "Life & Love". A native of Bristol, TN, "Smoke" formed the group "The Fabulous Nu-Tones" while in college and wrote and recorded their first release, "Our Love Was Destined To Be" / "I'm Not Worthy", on Vinyl while attending Tennessee State University. After college, his singing career took off when he led and managed a number of East Coast bands including South Jersey's "Black Smoke". Then, in the mid-1990s, "Smoke", as lead singer of The Ebonys, brought new life to the sound of Philadelphia with his rugged and powerful voice- slammin' the 90s with a dose of the great hits that made The Ebonys famous. His list of accomplishments also includes featured vocalist on "That's What Love Does" written and produced by Vincent Montana, Jr.; lead vocalist on Asphalt Jungle's Billboard charted single "Freakin' Time"; first class performer having shared the stage with such greats as Al Green, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Billy Paul, Chi-lites, Delfonics, Heatwave, Intruders, Ohio Players, Stylistics, Blue Magic etc; and now, solo recording artist.
Making his first trip to North Wales in the United Kingdom in October of 2009, "Smoke" did an impromptu performance of "That's What Love Does", a song that is well known on the UK dance scene. He returned to North Wales to do an encore performance in March, 2010, less than six months after his first performance.
"Smoke" resides in the Philadelphia area and continues to be active in keeping the sound of Philadelphia alive. He has completed his second solo CD entitled Give Me Your Heart.
Whether it be a funky, mid-tempo groove, a hip-hop inspired cut, or a heartfelt ballad, "Smoke" delivers, as only "Smoke" can, Smokin' Sounds With A Message You Can Dance To!!!

Shuggie Otis "Inspiration Information"

Shuggie Otis

"Inspiration Information"
Original Vinyl Issue: 1974
Remastered CD: 2001
Label: CBS/Luaka Bop
Catalog: # KE 33059/50473

Born Johnny Otis, Jr. on November 30, 1953, in Los Angeles, CA, Otis' formidable musical talents appeared at an early age. He began his professional career around 1965. He played a guitar solo on his bandleader, father Johnny Otis' 1969 number 29 RandB hit, "Country Girl," on Kent Records.
His guitar skills were so adept that during his teen years, he would have to wear dark glasses and strategically apply black ink between his nose and mouth to appear old enough to perform in clubs with his father.
Signing with CBS Records, Otis began recording virtuoso guitar-laced RandB/West Coast blues sides. His first LP was Al Kooper Introduces Shuggie Otis on Columbia.
Shuggie's 2nd album, Here Comes Shuggie Otiswas released issued on the CBS imprint, Epic Records in 1970 when he was only 14. His father, Johnny Otis, produced the LP, and co-wrote most of the album. Some of the session players include Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, Leon Haywood, Al McKibbon, Preston Love, and many others, including a chamber string group.
On his next album, 1971's Freedom Flight, Shuggie wrote four of the album's seven tunes, did all the arrangements, and helped Father Johnny with production suggestions. The senior Otis produced the set and allowed all of Shuggie's "weird" ideas full-reign in production, and he was joined by a host of musicians from the first album, along with George Duke, Aynsley Dunbar, and the backing chorus of Clydie King, Venetta Field, and Shirley Matthews, among others. The LP included the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23," written for Otis' girlfriend, who used strawberry scented paper for her letters to him.
Otis' fourth LP Inspiration Information was issued in October 1974, with Otis playing all of the instruments on jazzy and Latin-tinged RandB numbers. The LP was one of the first releases to showcase the electronic rhythm box then found usually on organs. Along with the title track, the set included such noteworthy gems as "Sparkle City," "Aht Uh Mi Hed," and the lush, string-laden "Island Letter," which also appeared as the B-side of the "Inspiration Information" single.
Later on in the '90s, Otis played with his own band around northern California and toured extensively. His son, Lucky Otis, played bass with Johnny Otis' band. Shuggie Otis is featured in the book Alligator Records Presents West Coast Blues, issued in August 1998 by Milwaukee, WI, publisher Hal Leonard.
Inspiration Information (along with Shuggie's entire CBS catalog) has been reissued and is currently available on CD here. But if you're in the market for vinyl, you can either grab the official 180 gram vinyl reissue here or try your luck sifting thru represses to find an original pressing here.

Review:
A very obscure single on People! The track wasn't produced by James Brown, but "Papa's Got The Wagon" has an excellent funky sound – with great raw vocals by Gloria in the tradition of Marva Whitney or Vicki Anderson! The cut was written by Juggy Murray, and done in other versions – but this is our favorite! The flipside is great, too – and is a very nice mellow soul track.

Review:
At the time of the release of "Think (About It)" in 1972, Lyn Collins had been a member of James Brown's performing revue for about two years. Her full-throated voice had earned her the nickname "the Female Preacher" and a shot to record her own album. Of course, the Godfather was in the producer's chair, writing four of the nine tracks, directing the J.B.'s as they laid down their usual funky grooves, and liberally adding vocals throughout. The title track is the main point of interest here; from Collins' throat-ripping vocals to the track's nasty groove to Brown's background interjections, this is a killer. (Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock later sampled the track for their rap classic "It Takes Two"). The rest of the record is a little uneven: "Just Won't Do Right" is a good doo wop-ish ballad with some churchy organ and great vocals by Collins and Brown, "Wheels of Life" is a nice little groover that sounds like vintage Aretha Franklin, and "Women's Lib" is a very slow ballad that lets Collins show off her anguished yowl of a vocal to its fullest. Where the album stumbles is on the covers of familiar songs. Her versions of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and the Gamble & Huff classic "Never Gonna Give You Up" are mediocre, and worst of all is her leaden take on "Fly Me to the Moon." Still, the record is worth tracking down for hardcore James Brown or funky soul fans. The less devoted should look for "Think (About It)" on one of the many compilations on which it appears.
