Reading Challenge Book Review: As I Lay Dying

Image
This style of writing has never been one of my favorites to read, all that jumping about from one point of view to another tends to make for a choppy story.  And in this case a confusing one, which I think may have been what Faulkner was going for because the situation is one where everything would be in turmoil but hey I am not an expert. It is a very well told story and it has some very heart touching moments in it.

Reading Challenge Book Review: The Awakening

This is (at least in my humble opinion) brilliantly written.  It's set at the end of the 19th century and it follows the journey of Edna Pontellier as her views towards her life, and what makes her happy change dramatically.  She rejects the expectations that others have around her to play her role in society as wife and mother to follow her own path.  Chopin really brings her characters to life and it makes for a very interesting read.  I will admit I didn't like the end though, even though I am one who always advocates for more true to life endings in stories this one got to me because I got very caught up in her story and I was rooting for a happy ending.

Reading Challenge Book Review: Anna Karenina

This book took me a lot longer to finish than I anticipated, months in fact.  I just couldn't get into it at first, Tolstoy's constant changing of how he was referring to his characters really threw me for a loop and made it hard for me to follow along.  I was determined to finish though and I am glad I did, once I got past the politics I found several story lines that are very easy to relate to for just about anybody.   There is a spiritual journey, several love stories, and at the end of the book, at least for me an ah ha moment. Not just the feeling that I had finished it and achieved something but also that I had learned something about myself along the way.  Which is not always something you can say about books these days.

Reading Challenge Book Review: Christine- Stephan King

With as much Stephan King as I have read I was kind of surprised that I had never read this book but about halfway through the first chapter my mind began to wonder and I thought maybe this is why.  I have that problem with his writing sometimes.  I think he is brilliant, he is one of my favorite writers, but there is some of his writing that I just can't connect with and Christine is one of those books. I finished it, but it took me longer than most books do and I had to force it.  I will admit though...it really, really gave me the creeps.  Not in the sleep with my light on for a week kind of way that Pet Cemetery did but I was kind of glad I don't drive.  As much as I didn't connect with the book the malevolence of Christine came pouring through the pages as I got closer to the end of the book and I was glad to be done with it.  Definitely not something I will reread, probably not even something I will keep on my bookshelf.   I don't ev...

Gilmore Girls Reading Challenge

Image
I was messing around on Pinterest while I was baking cookies, that funny enough I found on Pinterest (I love that site) when I stumble on this proclaimed Rory Gilmore reading list.   As I haven't had the best day I armed myself with my freshly baked espresso-chocolate cookies ( recipe ) and a vodka cocktail to read over this list.  Which I snagged from here .   Now, the first thing I discovered upon reading this list is that I have read a good number of these books.  Which was kind of inevitable, I read a lot.  The second thing was that I want to read a lot that I haven't.  Hence the challenge.  I would personally like to see how far I can get in reading through this list by this time next year. 1984 by George Orwell - read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain - read Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll - read   The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon An American Tragedy by Th...
