been a while

i don't quite remember the last time i posted something. wait, i guess i could look at the last entry's time stamp and figure that out.

speaking on time stamps, i realized that they are quite the new obsession. everything legitimate has a time stamp. rather i should say that you need a time stamp to be legitimate a la speeding ticket. what did we do before time stamps? spoken word? lies? anyway, enough about the digression.

all i wanted to say - i am alive! not quite lively but definitely alive. (malay)asia, I MISS YOU!

put a ring on it!

so i realized that i don't know too much about diamonds. and as far as i remember, i don't think i have a stereotypical fascination about them. i am pretty sure someone tried to explain the significance of "carat" but that didn't linger in my memory for too long. don't get me wrong, i do think they're gorgeous (plus, debeers does great store lighting.)

this past saturday, my roommate came home from a supposed "brunch". when i asked her how it was, she simply smiled and said that "she had news" before gently lifting her left palm. as you might have guessed, i caught a glimpse of the beautiful diamond ring on her finger and i literally shrieked/ yelped/ yelled! i instantly dropped the plate in the sink and felt a crazy rush of happiness/ joy/ adrenaline. so yes, my roommate sterling is officially engaged :)

maybe diamonds do have their magic. or maybe diamonds are so equated with the idea of eternal love that it just makes you giddy. either way, i don't think it would hurt to have a pink diamond though ;)

springtime in dc

i woke up this morning, popped up my window and felt excited immediately. now, we all know that i HARDLY feel excited in the morning but i did for a couple of reasons:

1. it's a SATURDAY - woot woot!
2. it was going to be a sunny day around the 70s i.e. 20 degrees celsius.
3. i had planned to wash my bedsheets AND whip out my spring clothing items - 3/4 things!

in any case, happiness surrounding item #3 was short-lived because i had to jump into my plaid shorts. what's new, what's new.

then, i went on a mission of getting into the city alongside 300 million tourists/people/pets to witness the hype that is the CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL. riding on the metro felt like an eternity because we were stuck at every platform due to the crowds. i was transported back to being in singapore's city hall station during rush hour. but i was glad i wasn't tucked under some dude's armpit - phew.

anyhow, we managed to get out unscathed and hiked to a grassy patch (somewhat close to the tidal basin) where you can see out to homeboy thomas jefferson's memorial... and yes, the cherry blossom trees were in full bloom! and it was snowing petals. i am pretty sure i ate 4 petals while we were going through our fruit salad and cheesey goodness.

after soaking in the cherryblossomness, i headed to the mall to catch a movie with a coworker - clash of the titans. pretty enjoyable but nothing spectacular. then i went to my favorite eyebrow threadmistress, sanam to get my eyebrows done. now, i must describe the "salon". it's sorta like a makeshift stall situated between actual stores. in other words, all the shoppers are zooming by me as i get my brows done. ayisha thinks i am mad to have such "public" service but i think part of the experience is hearing what people say/do. today i had an asian lady walk up to me as i am getting my right brow threaded.

al (for asian lady): is it really painful?
me: nah... and you get used to it.
al: doesn't it feel like 30 minutes of torture?
me: it's not that long really. plus, i have a pretty low pain tolerance so if i am not crying, it's a good sign.
al: is this your first time?
me: no.
al: that's why you're not crying.
me: yup, you got that right.
al: how often do you have to do this?
me: hmm... it depends, every few weeks?
al: wow, good luck.

and she walks off. HAHA. i think she had pretty nice brows from the times i peeked at her but i thought it the funniest conversation ever.

to celebrate the fact that i wasn't crying, anita and i went for yummy thai food. and i drove home feeling stuffed while dancing to ke$ha (don't judge, people). it was quite the day. perfect weather, beautiful cherry blossoms, great friends, candid conversation, rather decent eyebrows and of course, a risen Lord.

been too long!

woah, it really has been quite some time since i wrote anything. thanks mom, for reminding me to say something. (although i am pretty sure you already know about all the embarrassing tales of my ongoing life.)

BUT, aloha!

so what did i miss - happy belated valentine's day! happy year of the tiger! lent has begun and this wednesday, chicago is apparently dyeing its rivers green to celebrate shamrock fest. so happy st. patrick's day in advance!

oh speaking of chicago, i think i have a strange affinity for that city. it's cold, somewhat dreary and very windy. BUT I LOVE IT. the skyline is beautiful, the food is DELICIOUS and somehow, everything sorta appeals to me. odd.

but if you really need to know, life is going well. except for the quarter-life crisis.

alrighty folks, happy monday!

twentyten

i hope that the new year is treating you all nicely! for those of you who took some time off to chill with family and friends (and maybe pets), welcome back to the real world. and if you're in places where you are greeted by snow/rain/chilly winds, welcome to the COLD real world. obviously, being less cynical is not one of my new year's resolution.

BUT in all honesty, i would like to wish you a wonderful new decade. to celebrate that, i thought i could share some of my moments of enlightenment...

1. your body REALLY ages, so if you decide to pop a zit, be ready to bear the scar for an extended period of time.

2. although your body ages, you can still be rather youthful in all other senses. case in point: daddy dearest.

3. being youthful is never overrated. it's quite sensational actually! for example, i ventured out to an abandoned warehouse party in brooklyn for new year's eve. it was so underground that i thought i was part of an indie band that never got famous. AND i stayed out till 3:30am. quite unbelievable.

4. my friends are quite hilarious and that helps me maintain my youth. on the topic of falling asleep (while at work), ayisha provided the following tip:  haha OR fall asleep normally at your desk (head not down) and if anyone accuses you of sleeping, call them a racist and tell them that that's just how your eyes are.

5. i would like to attend graduate school in new york city. preferably in 2012.

6. the people in my life are so important to me that i'd like for all of them to move to new york city with me.

7. the quarter-life crisis can be met with a degree of excitement. just because you're not at mid-life YET.

8. and if you're at mid-life, well 50 is the new 30.

9. you change less than you think - i still love my food and bacon. yes, bacon is a category of its own.

10. i say 20 you say?

love and miss you all!
