About 4 months after we had been married, we found out we were expecting our forst baby! Our due date was February 9, 2009, just a few days before our first wedding anniversary. We were both a little nervous, but more excited than anything. I had always wanted to be a Mommy and now it was finally coming true.
I felt fine the first 7 weeks... Then the lovely morning sickness kicked in. I didn't have it as bad as some girls, but it was definitely there. I was mostly just sick in the morning and evening, so I could work without having too many problems. The key was to get lots of rest and keep something in my tummy, or I would feel really sick.
It did not seem real until we heard the heartbeat at the first doctors appointment on July 30, 2008. It was so neat to hear another heartbeat in me! I think Mike and I both teared up a bit. What an amazing gift to be able to create another human being! It is truly mind boggling.
On September 24, 2008 we found out we were having a little boy. Up until this point I was sure we were having a girl and most everyone I talked to guessed we were having a girl too. I was so nervous that the Dr. would not be able to tell what the sex was so i was drinking water and juice all morning to make sure he would be moving around. We had no problems finding out the sex. He was not at all shy about showing us his little "DOO-DAD". That is what the ultra sound tech called his penis. It was hilarious. I was so excited to be having a little boy!
The Ultra sound tech not only found a baby boy she also found a great big cyst on my right ovary. They were a little concerned about it but they just wanted to keep an eye on it to make sure it was not growing. I ended up getting 3 ultra sounds.
After we found out that we were expecting a boy I could finally start planning. We had a few names picked out: Nathan, Grant, and Lincoln. We both liked Lincoln the most so we started calling him that, and it stuck for pretty much the whole pregnancy.
The months went by and things were moving along just fine. I was healthy and the baby was growing and healthy, as well. I was seeing Dr. Wolsey until around the end of November when he told me he would not be here to deliver my baby because he was going on a mission. I was so sad because he was the Dr. that delivered me and I really wanted to have him deliver Lincoln. But it did not work out that way. I switched in my 34th week to Dr. Dewey.
The last month of pregnancy was going by so slowly. It felt as if it was the whole nine months all over again. I tried everything possible to get Lincoln here a little early. I walked, did squats, and rocked on my hands and knees, but nothing seemed to be working. At my Dr. appointment on the 9th, yes my due date, I tried to convince my Dr to induce me that day. He said that he would not induce me until the 16th at the earliest. I had to wait a whole week. I was so depressed.
On the 12th, 3 days over my due date, I was desperate. I had heard that acupuncture could help you go into labor, so I had my Mom make me an appointment with her acupuncturist. Nothing happened, so on Friday the 13th I went to the chiropractor with my Mom to see if there was anything that he could do to help me. He adjusted my ankle's and sure enough I went into labor that night around 8 p.m.
I slept until 12 a.m. waking up with painful period type contractions. I was counting the space of time between the contractions: they were about 5 min apart but not super intense. They started getting closer and a little stronger around 2 a.m. I called the hospital and they said to wait a few more hours to see if they were closer together and a little more intense. Around 5 a.m. I called the hospital again and they said to come on in and get evaluated. They said there was a chance of me being sent home but it was better to come in and get checked out.
We called Our parents to wish them a happy Valentines day, and to let them know I was in labor and then headed to the hospital. We arrived at the Utah Valley Medical Center at 6:30 a.m. on our one year anniversary! What are the odds of that? They admitted me, took us to the room I would deliver in, and hooked me up to all the machines.
When the nurse checked me, I was already dilated to a 4. She said that the contractions were not very regular even though I felt like they were pretty close together. But what did I know? I had never done this before. Finally we figured out that the machine was not picking up all of my contractions, so I was right! They were really close together. The nurse was still unsure if I would be staying though, because she could not get a hold of Dr. Dewey yet and the Doctor on call was delivering a baby, so she said to just hang tight for a while. After a while the Dr. on call came in and said that since I was at a 4 he would break my water. The nurse checked me again, and I was at a 6.
The Dr. broke my water and found that the baby had merconium mixed with the amniotic fluid, which is when the baby has a bowel movement in the womb. They explained that there would be a few extra nurses in the room when the baby was born to make sure he had not inhaled or swallowed any.
The nurse then asked if I wanted my epidural. I said not yet, but then I had a really bad contraction and changed my mind. They called the anesthesiologist he was there within 15 minutes putting my epidural in. I was so nervous to have a huge needle in my back, but I did not feel one thing, not even the numbing shot.
By about 2:30 I was at a full ten centimeters. Once I started pushing the nurse was sure the baby was posterior, which is when the baby is facing the wrong way (face up). After I had pushed for about an hour the Dr. Dewey came and tried to turn him with the forceps, which sent me in to an anxiety attack. I could not settle down after that. It felt like he was ripping my baby apart inside of me.
With no success he left me to push for another hour. Not much happened in that hour. The Dr. came back and said he was going to try and deliver me with forceps and if that does not work he would have to do an emergency C-section. I did not want a C-section and by this point I was almost in hysterics. I had Mike and my Dad give me a priesthood blessing.
The Dr. came back in with the forceps and within minuets Lincoln was born at 5:15 p.m. It was the best feeling to have him out of there. I felt my belly just flop after he was delivered. When I looked up to see him, he was purple and not making any noise. I was really nervous.
When they took him and suctioned and cleaned him, I heard him cry. It was the best sound I had ever heard! They thought he might have to go to the NICU because he wasn't turning a good rosy color very quickly, but they let me hold him first and he was fine after that.
It was love at first site. The poor little guy had an inch and a half bump on his head form hitting my pubic bone every time I pushed. It healed very quickly by his 2 week check up you would have never known it was there. Lincoln Michael Washburn was finally here! Mike and I were thrilled along with all of our family and friends. Happy Valentine's Day, Happy Anniversary, and Happy Birthday Lincoln! I think this day was destiny for us!

Proposal and Marriage Time!!
We had dated for about two and a half months when we started talking about getting married. We got engaged on October 13th 2007. I was in such a bad mood that day. I had worked all day, but that was not what had made me so ornery. It was that time of the month, and our stake was doing a Media Fast. We were encouraged not to watch, listen to, or read anything but church or school-related material. We decided to participate, but our roommates chose not to. It was hard, because we could not relax after work and school because our roommates were in the front room watching T.V. It was the longest two weeks of my life. The 13th was the last day of the Fast.
Mike wanted to have a fun night together and go out to eat and maybe go bowling or go for a drive up Provo canyon. I was so tired and all I wanted to do was go to bed. I really wanted to just watch a movie, if we ended up doing anything, . Mike talked me into going out to eat.
We went to The Olive Garden, one of my very favorite places to eat. (Mike had never been before that.) We didn't talk too much because I was so tired and in such a bad mood. I did ask him what he did for lunch, though, to which he said he had some beef stew with some friends. I found that kind of strange, but didn't dig any deeper. (I found out later that the 'friends' were my parents, who Mike had visited that afternoon and asked for their permission to marry me.) Once we finished dinner, Mike asked what I wanted to do. I told him I really just wanted to go home and watch a movie. I didn't even care if it was a church movie, I just needed to relax. He said we could do whatever I wanted, and that it was my night: I could choose anything.
When we got back to my apartment, Mike said he needed to run and put some clothes in the wash. He told me to get a movie picked out while he was gone. I decided we would watch Cinderella, my favorite Disney movie. Halfway through the movie, it started skipping, which made me mad. Mike got up and wiped off the disc. While he was doing that I was looking at him and thinking to myself, "That is the man that I'm going to be with forever."
The movie started working again and I was in a much better mood. Once the movie was over we sat and talked. Mike told me all the reasons why he loved me. Then he asked me if I could do him a favor. I said, "Sure, what do you need?" (I thought he just wanted me to go with him to change his laundry.) Then he took my ring out of his pocket. There was no laundry! I was shocked. He asked me to marry him, and of course I screamed, "Yes! Flippin' sweet!' Then I asked him, "How did you get the ring so fast?" (It was 'supposed' to be another two weeks until it was ready!) I started crying because I was so happy, then I was so giddy. It was like a little girl on Christmas morning. I think I was a little bipolar that night. I felt so many emotions; it was like a roller coaster ride!
Now for the wedding plans.
Wedding plans began immediately. We first talked about getting married in April once the semester was over for Mike. Then we moved it to March, then February! We chose the 14th: Valentine's Day! Mike's parents were married that day, too. We also chose to get married in the Provo, Utah Temple, where my parents were married.
I already knew that I didn't want a reception. I had always hated the idea of having to stand in line and talk to people on the day of my wedding. I had always wanted to be able to enjoy the day and have something more personal and intimate. We decided to do things a little differently. Mike was so happy that I didn't want the traditional wedding. My mom and I planned a family wedding dinner for February 13th, the night before the wedding. We booked the Salem civic center. It was the perfect size for the amount of people we wanted to invite.
Then for the dress. I decided to rent my dress. I ended up choosing the first dress I tried on at Pamela's Bridal in Orem. I tried on several, but I kept going back to the first one! It was perfect for me. It looked a little antiqued, which I loved. I had one of my best friends Stacy do my hair. It was exactly what I wanted: a little bit of a 40's flair to it.
Our photographer was good friend of ours, Tony Murray. He was fabulous. He took our engagement photos in Park City, on main street. He made it so much fun. Then for my bridals. We took some at the Riverwoods, in Provo. We also went up Provo Canyon, near Vivian Park, and took some pictures on some old train tracks. They turned out wonderfully I was very pleased with how well everything was going so far.
Then I went on birth control... That was the worst thing I have ever done to my body. It turned me into BRIDEZILLA! I was so moody all the time and did not want Mike to come near me. I almost called off the wedding it was so bad. So we decided it would be best for me to go off the pill, and what a huge difference that made!
Now we have to wait for the day to get here. More waiting. It seemed like it would never come. I went through the Provo Temple to receive my endowment on February 7th. It was such a neat experience. I can still remember the feeling I had being in the House of the Lord.
After all the planning and waiting, it was finally here: Yay! On the day of the 13th, I went to get my hair done. The weather was beautiful when I headed back to Salem to put the finishing touches on the dinner. We took family pictures before all of our guests arrived. Right as we started taking pictures, a huge snow storm rolled in. When I say huge, I mean HUGE! It was a total white out. It was so bad that kids were having to stay over night at school because they could not get home. I started having a panic attack because I didn't want it to ruin everything. People started showing up, despite the weather. I was amazed people were willing to risk their lives in this awful storm to come to our wedding dinner. There were a few that could not make it due to the weather, but I was so grateful that so many showed up. My best friend Megan flew in all the way form Oklahoma just for the wedding. I kept looking for her. Finally I saw her come in. I was so relieved to see her there safe.
It turned out beautifully, even with all the hiccups. You can plan all you want but I have learned you can't plan the weather. We finally got home at eleven that night after cleaning up the dinner. I was so exhausted, but do you think I could sleep? Not at all! I think I slept for maybe 2 hours total that night. I had so many different emotions going through me.
Finally I heard my Mom get up so I jumped out of bed and went to talk to her. She made me breakfast and then it was off to get my hair done again! I was able to relax a bit while Stacy did my hair. Then I drove back to Salem, picked up my parents, and left to pick up Mike. Then it was off to the Temple to be sealed to Mike for all eternity! WOW!! What an amazing day we had at the Temple. All we had to worry about was the Temple, not rushing to a reception afterward. We took our time getting pictures with family and friends and then just the two of us. It was so beautiful with all the snow from the day before.
Honeymoon...
For our Honeymoon we went up to Salt Lake for the weekend. It was so nice. Mike booked a carriage ride around down town Salt Lake: so romantic! We went to eat at our favorite Italian restaurant, Biaggi's, at the Gate Way mall. We also went to the the Salt Lake Temple to go through our first session as a married couple.
What a blessing it is to have each other to go through our ups and downs with!

How we became the Washburn's
Here is our story: The summer of 2007 Mike moved into the Branbury, where I had been living for about 5 months. Mike was made the Elders quorum president shortly after moving in. One Sunday after ward prayer I decided I was going to get to know Mike and his roommates, so I went up and started talking to all of them. I turned to Mike, who was the newest member of the ward, and asked where he was from. He was wearing a Denver Broncos T-shirt, so all he did was point to his shirt and say nothing to me in return. I was like, "Okay, he is a real keeper." I totally thought he was one of those cocky guys! So I started to talk to his other roommate whose name was also Mike. They lived in the "Mike apartment" because there were 3 Mikes that lived in the apartment. Mike Washburn (aka White Mike), Mike Alvillar (aka Mexi Mike) and Mike Nguyen (aka Asian Mike).
I had been talking to my friend Rachael and we decided to make breakfast for dinner and invite "the Mikes" over for the fun. We started cooking and the boys showed up, but the only one that came into the kitchen to help was White Mike, so that earned him a brownie point! We talked a little more while making the pancakes together, but it was a little awkward because I was still convinced he was a jerk from the T-shirt experience. After we ate we all decided we wanted to watch a movie. 10 min into the movie my friend Rachael asks the guys if any of them would like a back massage. Guess who was the first to sign up? Yes, White Mike. In my head I was subtracting the one brownie point I had given him earlier in the kitchen! I was thinking to myself he really is one of those cocky guys. I was really just mad because deep down I was interested in him and I wanted to be the girl giving him the massage!
A few weeks go by.
I had missed a few weeks of church because of some things with the family. I had not seen or talked to "the Mikes" for quite a while. The week I came back, me and my roommate Hanni went to church together. We were sitting in Sunday School together and in walks Mike. When I saw him, my heart fluttered. He eyed me and I started freaking out. I knew he was coming to sit next to me, even though his roommates were sitting in front of me with several empty seats next to them with another whole row of empty seats behind me. He climbed over two people to sit next to me. I'm sure my face was cherry red. My heart was racing I felt like I was out of breath. We said hello to each other and then it is pretty quiet. I mean we are sitting in Sunday School so we couldn't really say much, ya know? Every time the person teaching would ask a question, Mike would nudge my arm as if I should answer the question, which was not going to happen. I was way too distracted.
After church we had ward choir. I decided to go that week and was pleasantly surprised to see Mike there. After choir practice I was trying to avoid a guy that i had dated just a few months before, so of course I started talking to Mike as we walked outside. I had driven over to the clubhouse because I came straight from dinner at my parents house. When I offered Mike the thirty second ride home, and he accepted the offer. I dropped him off and 20 minutes later he texted me, saying, "Thank you so much for the ride home from choir; it was nice not to walk back to the apartment in the heat." After he sent me the text I knew for sure he was interested in me. We continued to text on and off for a bit.
Then one of the girls apartments texted me and said that they were having a movie night. Perfect! Now I could invite Mike and have a good excuse to see him again! So I texted Mike and told him if he could come over if he wanted. I got there earlier than he did and sat down on the couch. The living room filled up quickly and soon there were no open seats near me. Mike came and ended up sitting on the floor. Part way through the movie one of the girls sitting next to me left and the next thing I knew Mike was sitting right next to me:). I was so happy! We slowly got closer so our arms were touching. ( I know its so silly but I was on cloud nine!)
After the movie Mike offered to walk me home, and of course I was all for that. We talked at the door step for a while. He asked if my roommates and I were planning on going to F.H.E the next night. Our ward was going to an Orem Owls game. I really don't like sports much, but I really wanted another excuse to see him again. I told him I would get back to him after I talked to my roommates. I begged all of my roommates to go but none of them wanted to. Finally my roommate Hanni said she would go with me.
I had to work late that night so I asked Mike to hold our tickets and meet us once we got there. We arrived in the middle of the game. Mike met us at the gate with our tickets. The ward was having ice cream when we got there. Hanni and I had just finished dinner, so we were not up for ice cream. We decided to go lay our blanket near Mike's roommates. Right as we got settled, some lame guy came and sat right next to me. Mike never came to talk to me because of the lame-wad that had ruined everything. We ended up leaving early because we were going to a movie as roommates. I looked for Mike to say goodbye and thank him for holding our tickets, but he had already gone. I decided to text him and tell him thank you, and apologize for not being able to talk to him much. He said that he and his roommates had to leave early to go do homework and he felt bad that he was not able to talk to me more. I texted back and said, "Well, I guess we'll just have to find another time to hang out."
We went out a few days later on our first official date! :) (July 26th, 2007 to be exact!) For our date, we went mini golfing. I almost beat him but as we all know, 'almost' only counts is horseshoes and hand grenades.
And the rest is history...
