June 3 in New York: March for Truth

On June 3, this Saturday, we're teaming up with allies to hit the streets in hundreds of March for Truth events, demanding independent investigations into Trump's Russia ties and obstruction of justice

Dear MoveOn member,

"Investigate Trump!" has been a clarion call of MoveOn members for nearly six months.

Coast to coast, thanks to the tireless efforts of many MoveOn members, we have generated tens of thousands of calls to Congress and delivered more than one million petition signatures calling for the truth about Donald Trump. Our people-powered effort to sound the alarm about possible obstruction of justice and Trump's ties to Russia is working—that's why we're taking it to the next level.

On June 3—this Saturday—we’re teaming up with allies to hit the streets in a March for Truth.

There’s a march near you in New York. Will you sign up now and ask your friends and family to join you? Just click here!

Every day brings a new revelation about the outrageous and endlessly corrupt Trump administration.

Republicans in Congress outright refuse to connect the dots about the Trump cartel's damage to our nation's Constitution—but MoveOn members see what's going on and are more committed than ever to demanding the truth.

That's why we're coming together with allies on Saturday, June 3, in over 130 communities around the country, for the March for Truth, a grassroots initiative led by volunteers who have had enough of Trump's corruption and Republican attempts to hide the truth.

There's a March for Truth event in New York! Click here to find out where to go to connect the dots on Donald Trump—and bring your family and friends!

The scores of actions on June 3 are an opportunity to focus mounting public outrage at the end of the congressional recess, while senators and representatives are home and while the media is watching to see what constituents are making of the nearly constant revelations about the corruption-rife Trump, his advisers, his family, and his administration.

Though the appointment of a DOJ special counsel is an important step (and was a demand of MoveOn members), there's much more to be done to get at the full truth about Trump, including pressuring Congress to appoint an independent commission.

On June 3, MoveOn members will send a clear message to politicians and the media that we won't be satisfied until we see the whole picture about Trump. And while we're ensuring that March for Truth actions put specific pressure on Republican leaders, it's important that we tell this story everywhere around the country.

Here's the bottom line: Getting to the bottom of Trump's ties to Russia and possible obstruction of justice isn't some partisan football. This is about all of us; our security, our democracy, our government. Every lie tweeted from the Oval Office cheapens our Constitution and makes us all less safe. Let's stand together and demand that we get to the bottom of this historic threat to our nation.

Don't miss an opportunity to send a message that MoveOn members and our allies won't rest until we have the truth about Trump.

Click here to find the March for Truth in New York and RSVP.

Thanks for all you do.

FW: Al Franken's new book is great (no joke!)

Al Franken's book is out today! And he's letting it all out. "Once upon a time, Al Franken was funny. But then he became a senator. Now, in a new memoir, he is ready to tell all the jokes he has been sitting on for the last 10 years," says The New York Times. Al Franken's book is out today! And he's letting it all out. Hi Eddie—Al Franken's book is out today! And he's letting it all out. "Once upon a time, Al Franken was funny. But then he became a senator. Now, in a new memoir, he is ready to tell all the jokes he has been sitting on for the last 10 years," says The New York Times book review.1

We could tell you more, but there's no substitute for reading it yourself. Now's your chance:

Order your limited-edition copy of "Al Franken, Giant of the Senate" from MoveOn before we run out—and your money will be used to support our resistance to Trump's corrupt agenda.

For more details on Al Franken's new book, see Emily's email from the other day, below:

Dear MoveOn member,

Senator Al Franken’s new book is out. So here's the deal: You could order it from a big, corporate bookstore—or you could get a copy of Franken’s hilarious and insightful book from MoveOn instead, and we'll put your money to work to fight Donald Trump's agenda and elect more progressives like Al Franken to the Senate!

It seems like a no-brainer, right? Then don't wait—act now!

Order your limited-edition copy of "Al Franken, Giant of the Senate" from MoveOn—and your money will be used to support our resistance to Trump's corrupt agenda.

Al Franken’s improbable journey—from "Saturday Night Live" writer to winning the closest Senate election in history (and then doing fantastic work in office!)—is incredible and provides progressives with a roadmap for anti-establishment, unorthodox candidates and causes.

His new book is a must-read, and because Franken is a former professional comedy writer, it's quite a bit more entertaining than other political books you may have read. And if you get it through MoveOn, your gift will support the resistance, not a fat cat corporate retailer.

Order your limited-edition copy of Sen. Franken's new book NOW. They're gonna go fast.

Thanks for all you do.

These NY Democrats need to stop acting like Republicans

Dear New York MoveOn member,

Hi! I’m Cynthia Nixon.

If you know me, you probably know at least a few things: I am an actor and an activist, a proud New Yorker, and a passionate advocate for public education and a state that works for ALL of us.

State Senate Republicans allied with Trump have been a major obstacle in the way of progress here in New York.

Here's the good news: After a special election on Tuesday, Democrats now hold a numerical majority of 32 seats in New York’s State Senate!1 That should put them in control and allow our state to make critical progress in resisting Trump and enacting a progressive agenda. But ...

Some senators elected as Democrats have allied themselves with Republicans. They call themselves the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), and thanks to their alliance, the Republicans unfairly control the State Senate.

What’s worse, IDC leader Senator Jeffrey Klein just said that "if I have anything to do with it, (Republican Leader) Flanagan is going to be the leader for a long, long time."2

Trump’s administration is an imminent threat to our communities, our children, our health, and our values. We can’t afford to wait one minute longer for Democrats to start acting like Democrats.

Add your name to mine: Tell the IDC to end their alliance with Republicans in New York's State Senate immediately.

This isn't a new fight for me. For 15 years, I've been fighting for fairer and more equitable public schools—ever since my oldest child, Sam entered, kindergarten (Sam is now 20!).

But on public education and every other issue, Trump’s actions in the White House have raised the stakes for working families here in New York.

Trump's health care plan and budget are cruel monstrosities engineered to harm the most vulnerable. On immigration, civil rights, mass incarceration, the climate crisis, affordable housing, and more, he’s taken direct aim at New Yorkers.

And these IDC senators—elected as Democrats—want to keep Trump Republicans in charge for a "long, long time"? That’s absolutely outrageous.

If Republicans here are going to act as Trump Republicans, we need progressive Democrats here who will stand up and RESIST—full stop.

Add your name to mine: Tell the IDC to end their alliance with Republicans in the State Senate immediately.

We the people sent them to Albany to be Democrats. It's time for them to start acting that way.

Thank you.

—Cynthia Nixon

No justice in Trump's Department of "Justice" (Video)

We will not be silent about the increasing levels of harm communities of color are experiencing under the Trump administration.

Dear MoveOn member,

Jeff Sessions isn't just a liar. He's dangerous. Under his leadership, Trump's Department of Justice has callously reversed years of progress, and its new policies will adversely impact people of color.

From making it harder for people of color to vote to bringing back harsher punishments for drug offenses, the Department of Justice is less about justice and more about systematically disenfranchising people of color.

We made a quick video to summarize some of the policies that are rapidly changing under Trump, Sessions, and the new Department of Justice. Click here to watch and share with your friends and family.

(And if you're not on Facebook, click here to watch it on YouTube instead.)

Novelist and scholar Zora Neale Hurston said, "If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it."

That's why we will not be silent about the increasing levels of harm communities of color are experiencing under the Trump administration. We know that simply sharing the worst that the Trump administration is doing isn't enough, but making sure our friends are aware of these destructive actions is a critical step toward taking greater action, which we are and will continue to do with allies across the civil rights, immigrant rights, and human rights movements. Sessions and Trump are counting on us to be too distracted by the many other outrages to even notice these measures, and we can't let that happen.

Click here to watch and share the video on Facebook right now.

Thanks for all you do.

Trumpcare = Radical redistribution to the rich

Behind closed doors and away from the cameras, Republican lawmakers are working overtime to reshape Trumpcare into something that could actually pass the Senate and become law. Behind closed doors and away from the cameras, Republican lawmakers are working overtime to reshape Trumpcare into something that could actually pass the Senate and become law.

Dear MoveOn member,

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office's new official analysis of the health care bill passed by the House finds that 23 million people would lose health insurance and over 53 million would lose protections for pre-existing conditions—all to pay for hundreds of billions in tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations.1

And here's the worst part: Behind closed doors and away from the cameras, Republican lawmakers are working overtime to reshape Trumpcare into something that could actually pass the Senate and become law.

It's critical that MoveOn members have a shared understanding of the fight ahead. Which is why we wanted to send this uncustomarily long (but important) email, laying out the state of play.

Trumpcare remains a clear and present danger. Daily revelations about Trump's apparent obstruction of justice and ties to Russia are keeping us glued to our phones—and the GOP health care bill out of the news. Just where Republicans want it.

And just as Trump is willfully ignoring the normal procedures of the executive branch, Mitch McConnell is sidestepping the normal procedure for legislation and crafting the Senate's version of the health care bill outside of the normal democratic process of public hearings and committee deliberations. Instead, he's got a group of senators (all Republicans—often, men only) hammering out their bill in secret.2

The Republican goal is to keep their Trumpcare bill out of public view until they've got something that can squeeze through the Senate purely with GOP votes—and then suddenly rush it through a vote before the public can mobilize against it.And as they've demonstrated, they are willing to change rules, lock out the public, and use every legislative trick available when it serves their purposes.

It could work. Which is exactly why we have to mobilize now, before the secret deals are struck and it's already too late. (For more details on our work ahead, read on.)

Because the Senate Republicans are negotiating in private, the only things we know about their talks are from public statements, press leaks, and allies with their own GOP sources on Capitol Hill. Piecing those things together, here's our sense of the current situation and the path forward:

  • Senate Republicans are divided on Medicaid cuts and pre-existing conditions.4,5 Some want big Medicaid cuts—others want huge cuts. Whichever side wins, millions of kids with disabilities, seniors in nursing homes, and working families will lose health insurance and nursing home care. But the outcomes range from bad to devastating. This is a key area of division—and an issue that we should fight on, in phone calls and town hall meetings and protests at senators' local offices. Meanwhile, Ted Cruz and his hard-right allies might insist on attacking protections for people with pre-existing conditions, as ultraconservatives did in the House. So we can't neglect that fight either.
  • The GOP will use next week's Senate recess to test the public's anger on health care. We heard from a Hill source that Senate Republicans view the upcoming congressional recess, from May 26 to June 4, as a "barometer" of public attention to and outrage about their health care plans. That makes this an absolutely crucial moment to mobilize in force and tell them not to take away our care. MoveOn members will be working with allies to promote and recruit to town halls and other in-district events—because we know that we have the power to make noise in every corner of the country.
  • Republicans plan to introduce options, or even a bill, in early June—and to vote in late June or July. In other words, we have only a matter of weeks to make sure that Republican senators come to see health care cuts as politically toxic. If we can apply enough pressure in this period to prevent them from coming to an agreement, Mitch McConnell might schedule a vote on a bill anyway—a vote they'd lose—just to get health care over with and clear the way for tax cuts.6

A decisive win might be possible. The worst outcome for Republicans (and the best outcome for us) is for GOP lawmakers to remain deadlocked on health care as the five-week August recess begins—because the hailstorm of public pressure would almost certainly drive them farther apart.

To win, we need to peel off three Republicans. Republicans are using special rules to pass their health care bill with only 50 Senate votes (plus Mike Pence as tie-breaker)—meaning that Democrats can't filibuster. We need at least three of the 52 Republicans to oppose the bill that Mitch McConnell brings to a vote.

We'll use targeted pressure to peel off three Republicans, tailoring our approach to each individual senator—to push them to draw bright lines that make an eventual compromise impossible. For some, the uncrossable line might be Medicaid programs for opioid addicts. For others, it might be the Medicaid expansion in the Affordable Care Act. For still others, it's pre-existing conditions or defunding Planned Parenthood. We're working closely with a coalition of allies to map the most critical issues to raise with each senator as the negotiations proceed.

The bottom line? Game on. Republicans are coming for our health care. But they're divided, and we're united—and if we turn up the heat high enough, we may be able to stop them.

In the weeks ahead, we'll be organizing to press senators with every tactic at our disposal, from urging directly affected constituents to speak up at town halls, to flooding senators with phone calls, to organizing protests outside of their district offices.

All of this will take focus. It will take conviction. It will require protest; sometimes, the most effective protest is the simple act of publicly telling our personal stories. And it will take resources, so if you can you chip in to stop Trumpcare from passing the Senate, please help out with a $3 donation now.

Yes, I'm in! I'll chip in now to help stop Trumpcare.

This is one of those fights that not only defines our political landscape, it defines the kind of country we live in now and in which our children will grow up. And our response to this moment defines who we are. Ultimately, we need Medicare for All—a universal program that ensures that all of us get the care we need. But today, we need to stand and defend what we've built so far. Lives depend on it.

Thanks for all you do.

–Ben, Emily, Emma, Gabby, and the rest of the team

P.S. If a new bill passes the Senate, won't it be impossible to reconcile with the bill that passed the House? Don't bet on it. Republicans will know that whatever passed the Senate (almost certainly without a single vote to spare) is their one shot to gut Obamacare and Medicaid. There's a dangerously high chance that Paul Ryan will simply ram the Senate bill through a House vote with zero modifications—something he could potentially do in less than a day. At that point, it's game over. Which is why we've got to stop this thing in the Senate.

Click here now to chip in $3 to help stop Trumpcare in the Senate.

Journalist body-slammed for asking about health care

A journalist was viciously attacked by a billionaire GOP candidate for Congress in Montana who's running against MoveOn-endorsed prairie populist Rob Quist—with election day looming. A journalist was viciously attacked by a billionaire GOP candidate for Congress in Montana who's running against MoveOn-endorsed prairie populist Rob Quist—with election day looming.

Dear MoveOn member,

News broke tonight that Greg Gianforte, the far-right Republican millionaire running in Thursday's special election for Montana's U.S. House seat against progressive champion Rob Quist, has viciously assaulted a reporter who was simply trying to ask questions about the GOP plan to take away health care from 23 million people.1

Details are still coming in—The Guardian has just released shocking audio of the incident—but one thing is clear: Whether it's on the playground or at a political event, bullying and violence are NOT acceptable.

This is outrageous, and we have to act fast.

This special election in a flippable district is within single digits, and the polls close in less than 24 hours. Our media team is working into the night to launch a rapid-response digital ad blitz using the audio of the assault to make sure that as many Montanans as possible learn about this before they head to the polls tomorrow.2

That's why we're reaching out tonight to ask you, Eddie: Can you rush an emergency contribution to help us cover the cost of rapid-response digital ads about Gianforte's assault of a reporter? We'll run these emergency ads until the polls close tomorrow, and then we'll use any leftover funds to support our resistance of the Trump Republican agenda, including supporting progressive Jon Ossoff's fight in the close special election in Georgia on June 20.

Yes, I'm in! To defeat the millionaire bullies like Greg Gianforte, I'll contribute $6 to get rapid-response ads on the air in Montana.

The bottom line is that Trump has empowered a new crop of rich bullies who don't respect the rule of law and have complete disdain for the press and for their constituents. This special election in Montana was already neck and neck, and this violent incident has the potential to change the outcome. If we can win this election in Montana tomorrow, it'll be seen as an unmistakable rejection of the kind of violence that Trump has injected into our political culture over the last two years, and a sign of what's to come for Republicans.

Let's help Rob Quist bring this race home tomorrow, then help Jon Ossoff win in Georgia, and then support progressive candidates across the country—showing Republicans that there are consequences for their unacceptable attacks on the press, extreme and reactionary agenda, and escalating assault on our values.

Rush an emergency contribution of $6—or whatever you can afford. We were not prepared for such a story to break at the last minute and urgently need your help to tip the balance in Montana.

Thanks for all you do.

We were all shaken to our very core by last week's political crises, not to mention the previous four months of attacks on vulnerable communities. If you're the kind of person who yearns to take effective action to help reclaim our country, Resistance Summer is for you.

As part of Resistance Summer, 1,000 lucky MoveOn members like you will get expert, individualized coaching from nationally renowned organizers and a small stipend of $150 per month to cover expenses. And most important of all, you'll have the support and resources to organize your own communities to effectively fight back against Trump and the Republican Congress.

Don't wait until Wednesday to apply. Click here to submit your application now to be considered for taking part in Resistance Summer!

Want to learn more about the program?

Resistance Summer is a 12-week volunteer program for emerging community leaders and activists who want to gain or deepen their organizing skills and be part of an ongoing national network of organizers standing up to Trump's agenda. We believe that in order to protect our communities and win back power, we must organize. It's resistance with resilience.

There are three key parts of the Resistance Summer program: trainings, actions, and cohorts.

Trainings

You'll participate in weekly virtual trainings (webinar-style, Facebook Live, videos, or readings) that last about 60 minutes each. They will be offered on Sunday evenings, but you can complete them at a time that's convenient for you each week. Trainings will be led by expert trainers and cover key organizing principles and skills such as:

  • Developing a campaign strategy
  • Effective recruitment
  • How to get media coverage for your actions and build relationships with reporters
  • Organizing vs. mobilizing
  • How did we get here? Political education and analysis
  • And much more!

Yes, I want to apply for Resistance Summer and receive expert training on organizing!

Actions

The best learning comes from action, so we'll put our trainings into practice with national days of action in June, July, and August. By taking action together all across the country, our impact is amplified.

In June, we'll kick off the summer by gathering in fellowship for community cookouts. Getting neighbors and friends together builds relationships and community ties that make our readiness for action stronger and keep us invested for the long haul. They're also an opportunity to lay out the opportunities for action in July and August and get folks excited to join you in action.

In July, we'll demonstrate that the resistance is building the power to win elections. We'll come together for a voter contact day of action, where we'll gain experience talking to voters in our communities about the issues that are important to them. We'll gain valuable skills of having the conversations that make a difference in elections, and we'll gather valuable information about the mood of voters where we live.

In August, when members of Congress are home for their month-long summer break, we'll hold them accountable for their actions and make our demands clear at town hall meetings and other events.

Yes, I want to apply to lead the Resistance in my community this summer!

Cohorts

You will be organized into cohorts, or groups, of 25 MoveOn Mobilizers, grouped by strategic focus (e.g., do you live in a congressional district with a Republican representative who is vulnerable in the next election? Do you live in a big city with a Democratic mayor and want to support pro-active progressive policy?).

Each cohort will be matched with an expert Cohort Facilitator—an experienced organizer and movement leader who will support you through the trainings and actions. Cohort Facilitators are people such as veteran organizer and founder of the Midwest Academy Heather Booth, elections veteran Emmy Ruiz, and direct action organizer Yong Jung Cho.

Yes, I want to join Resistance Summer and work with a cohort of my peers across the country and an expert Cohort Facilitator!

Calendar

Here are some key dates to mark on your calendar for Resistance Summer:

Wednesday, May 24: Applications Due
Friday, June 2 through Friday, June 9: Program Participants Announced
Monday, June 19: Virtual Training Kickoff
Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25: June Action—Resistance Summer Community Cookouts
Weekends in July: July Action—Voter Contact Day of Action!

Yes, I want to apply for Resistance Summer by the Wednesday, May 24 deadline.

What happens after Resistance Summer?

Why, the resistance continues! And you will have more tools in your toolbox and more inspiration for the long haul. Upon successful completion of the Resistance Summer program, you will have the opportunity to join a national network of local volunteer organizers ready to organize locally for nationally impactful campaigns, including responding to rapid-response crisis moments and preparing for elections.

Expectations

We believe that good organizers set clear expectations and follow through on commitments. We have worked hard to make this learning and action opportunity available to the widest range of people of different backgrounds. If you can commit an average of 5 hours per week during the summer, can access a smartphone or computer with an internet connection, and want to organize events in your community that will make a difference, Resistance Summer could be for you!

Here are the expectations for Resistance Summer program participants:

  • I am available throughout most of the summer (gone for no more than 3 weeks total, with no more than 2 weeks at a time).
  • I understand the expectation that as part of Resistance Summer I will complete a weekly training module, a weekly organizing assignment, and a weekly report, and that I will participate in a monthly action to apply the trainings to practice (June community cookouts, July voter contact events, August town hall or other congressional recess action).
  • I can commit an average of 5 hours per week from June 19 to Sept. 6 (12 weeks).
  • I understand that this is a volunteer role. I understand that I can choose to receive a $150 monthly stipend (once per month for 3 months) contingent upon completing the requirements of the program.
  • I have or can get regular access to a smartphone or computer with internet access and enough data for about 60 minutes of video each week to complete the weekly assignments.
  • I agree with this Resistance Summer vision statement: I believe that we can build a country with room for all of us, with an economy that works for all of us, that welcomes refugees and immigrants, that takes action to address climate change, that makes it easier, not harder, to vote, that values Black lives, that stands against sexism, racism, Islamophobia. I share a commitment to nonviolent action to achieve this vision.

Yes, I want to help lead the Resistance this summer.

Thanks for all you do.

Tell Secretary Kelly: Extend immigration protections for Haitian families now!

Will you sign and share this petition urging DHS Secretary John Kelly to renew the Temporary Protected Status of thousands of Haitian families before it's too late?

Dear MoveOn member,

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has until Tuesday, May 23, to renew an immigration program that shields thousands of Haitians from deportation. If he does not renew this program, thousands will be deported.1

Will you sign and share this petition urging DHS Secretary John Kelly to renew the Temporary Protected Status of thousands of Haitian families before it's too late?

We demand that Secretary Kelly stop the deportation of thousands of Haitian families by renewing their Temporary Protected Status immediately!

Known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, the program currently allows some 50,000 Haitians to work in the United States while keeping them safe from Donald Trump's deportation force.2

If Secretary Kelly does not renew TPS for Haitian families, then thousands of families would be forced to return to a country that is dealing with a severe food crisis and the aftermath of two major earthquakes.

We cannot allow Secretary Kelly and Donald Trump to continue to terrorize immigrant communities across the United States! Please join me in demanding that Secretary Kelly take immediate action and renew Temporary Protected Status to Haitians.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Whoa, Resistance Summer is taking off!

P.S. Read more about the program at the Resistance Summer About page.

Dear MoveOn member,

Resistance Summer is coming.

Every day brings new attacks on our democratic institutions—including the latest revelations Donald Trump may have obstructed justice, yet again, by asking James Comey, (formerly) the head of the FBI, to end an ongoing investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russia. This is on top of attacks on health care and voting rights, shutting out the free press—the list goes on.

The only way out of this disaster is to organize every community in the country. And that’s what Resistance Summer is all about. By organizing this summer, we can force politicians to stand up to Trump this year, and build up to a progressive tsunami in 2018.

That’s why we’re looking for 1,000 volunteer MoveOn Mobilizers to join us for Resistance Summer. As one of these volunteer leaders, you would spend an average of 5 hours each week organizing your community, receive personalized coaching from a nationally-renowned trainer, build relationships with a cohort of 25 other Mobilizers in similar communities, and receive a small stipend ($150/month) to cover the costs of organizing.

Apply now to lead the Resistance in your local community this summer—or forward this email now to someone you know who’d be great for the position.

The damage President Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress have already done to our democracy will take years to unwind—and the urgency to reclaim our government is unprecedented. Consider: Donald Trump asked the nation's top law enforcement official to end an ongoing federal investigation, and when Trump didn't get what he wanted, he fired him. Meanwhile, the administration is dismantling key federal agencies like the EPA, voter suppression efforts are rampant, and hundreds of right-wing extremist judges are waiting to be appointed to life-long posts. Far from serving as a check or balance in the face of possible treason, Congress is acting as an accomplice.

Through it all, though, there is hope. Our Resistance movement has swept the nation, mobilizing millions of people who’ve never seen themselves as political before. We’ve successfully stopped the Muslim ban and have so far turned repeal of Obamacare into a toxic third rail that many Republicans fear.

The MoveOn Mobilizer’s mission? Turning the heat up even further. This summer, we need town halls flooded with protesters, phones ringing off the hook, voters registering in unprecedented droves, and much, much more. You don’t need political experience—all you need is commitment and the desire to put in the hard work to organize your community—plus 5-10 hours a week to dedicate to the Resistance from June 15 to September 15. In that time, Mobilizers will go through a structured training program and, with expert support, organize one event each month over the summer.

So stop for a moment right now and think: Who do you know would be a great MoveOn Mobilizer for Resistance Summer? Is it you? A friend, family member, or colleague?

Thanks for all you do.

P.P.S. Tonight's news about a special prosecutor to investigate Trump's Russia ties is an important step in our pursuit of the truth, and proof that our pressure is working. But it's not enough, as we keep up the fight for a full and immediate investigation including an independent commission and the public testimony of James Comey about Trump's obstruction of justice. Yet, this step forward is a reminder that grassroots organizing can work, and we'll keep up this and other fights throughout Resistance Summer. Apply now.

Senate: Add six more women to the Senate health care working group

Will you sign and share my petition demanding that Mitch McConnell add six women and remove seven men from the Senate working group on health care?

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Eve Hurwitz, a fellow MoveOn member in Annapolis, Maryland, and I started a petition to Sen. Mitch McConnell and the United States Senate, which says:

Women are 51% of the United States population. Yet there are 14 men and just one woman on the working group that is drafting the Senate bill on health care. We demand equal representation for this bill. Add six women to the health care working group and remove seven men.

Women represent more than half the population of the U.S. and deserve to be represented in the working group writing the health care legislation.

Will you sign and share my petition demanding that the Senate working group on health care add six women and remove seven men so there is equal representation?

Earlier this month, Mitch McConnell announced that there was a team of 13 Republican men overseeing the nation's health care policies with no input from women. It was absolutely unconscionable. After Sen. McConnell's announcement, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed dismay by telling reporters, "I just wanna make sure we have some women on."1

And only after massive public outcry did Republican senators invite one woman to join the committee—Sen. Shelley Moore Capito—and it's unclear if she will remain on it permanently. Making matters worse, they also invited Sen. Ron Johnson to join permanently, making the permanent working group 14 Republican men.2,3

Fourteen Republican men and only one woman charting the fate of our entire health care system is not acceptable. Click here to sign the petition demanding Mitch McConnell have equal representation on his Senate health care committee.

Amid fears of pre-existing conditions and cuts to Medicare, this bill is extremely unpopular to Republicans and Democrats alike—only 21% of Americans surveyed by Quinnipiac University approved.4

The Congressional Budget Office also hasn't yet scored the Trumpcare 2.0 bill passed by the House earlier this month. Yet its score is reportedly going to be even worse than the assessment of the House's first health care overhaul bill introduced in March, in which estimates were that 24 million more Americans could be uninsured by 2026, compared to the current healthcare system.5

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Eve Hurwitz

Taking the Resistance to the next level

The Resistance movement has swept the nation. For Resistance Summer, we're recruiting 1,000 volunteer MoveOn Mobilizers to take the fight to the next level. Apply now for coaching from expert organizers + a stipend to cover expenses.
