Drop charges against Bree Newsome

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Rashad Robinson, Executive Director of ColorOfChange.org, and I started a petition to South Carolina Officials, which says:

I demand all charges are immediately dropped against Bree Newsome, the courageous Black woman who cut down the South Carolina Confederate flag, and her ally, James Tyson.

Early Saturday morning, a multiracial group of Carolinians led by teachers and activists took down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Capitol grounds—within an hour the state had raised the hateful banner once again in time for an 11 A.M. white supremacist rally.

Bree Newsome, the Black woman who climbed the pole and cut down the flag, was arrested and taken into custody by Capitol Police. She should be promptly released from jail, any charges should be dropped, and the legislature should immediately vote to permanently remove the flag.

According to a statement from the activists they took down the flag because:

"We could not sit by and watch the victims of the Charleston Massacre be laid to rest while the inspiration for their deaths continue to fly above their caskets."

The Confederate flag was born out of a government defending the enslavement of Black people and resurrected as an emblem for whites violently opposing racial integration. Any government that recognizes the flag is declaring that it cherishes a history of racial terror.

Taking down the flag is just one step but a symbolically meaningful one. Make no mistake about it, however, racism isn't just a flag or words—it's baked into our economy and inequities in our democracy and criminal justice system.

In Bree's own words:

"It's time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality."

South Carolina officials have sided with white supremacists in choosing to restore the flag before a planned rally. The legislature must immediately vote to permanently remove the Confederate flag from the Capitol and all state buildings.

ColorOfChange stands with Bree and the courageous activists who took down South Carolina's Confederate flag. You can add a comment using the box provided.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Join me and Robert Reich

I wanted to make sure you received a special invitation for a call with Robert Reich.
Dear MoveOn member,

On Tuesday, June 30, at 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 CT/6:30 MT/5:30 PT), I'm hosting a special call with Robert Reich and MoveOn members like you to kick off national teach-ins to save the economy. Click here for information and to RSVP.

These national teach-ins will extend the reach and use of Robert's amazing "Big Picture" videos, and they'll make it possible for MoveOn members across the country to help shape MoveOn's next big campaigns. I hope you can join the call! And, since MoveOn members are passionate about getting big money out of politics, I took the liberty of including Robert's last email announcing the final "Big Picture" video. Please scroll down and take a look if you haven't already!

As always, thanks for all you do.

The Big Picture
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Saving our economy—and, in fact, our democracy—rests on our ability to get big money out of politics.

Big money in politics affects everything we care about—from forcing polluters to pay for poisoning our environment to securing debt-free higher education to busting up the biggest banks. Everything.

The 2016 elections are gearing up to be the most expensive in history. Candidates from both political parties and at all levels—national, state, and increasingly even local—will be dependent on wealthy donors to rise above the fray. And even candidates with good intentions will have to repay campaign donations with access and favors. It's a broken system that needs fixing. And we must move quickly.

Will you watch and share Get Big Money Out of Politics for a short list of what we can and must do right now to save our democracy and our economy?

Medicare

Get Big Money Out of Politics
is incredibly timely: President Obama is considering an executive order that would require federal contractors to fully disclose political spending—an idea I discuss in the video and one that has spurred MoveOn member action. Just this week, 26 senators and 104 representatives sent a letter to the president urging his immediate action.

Look, this one is a biggie. If you're like me and you're ready to elevate the growing call to get big money out of politics, please watch and share this video right now.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

Card for Charleston: add your name

Sign the card being delivered, along with flowers, to the families of the victims from Mother Emanuel church.

Dear MoveOn member,

In the last week, we've seen incredible progress in removing one of the most potent symbols of racism in America—the Confederate flag. And we've also celebrated huge wins at the Supreme Court, including this morning's decision on marriage equality.

Today is a day of mixed emotions, however, because as the nation lays to rest a public servant and a man of the cloth—South Carolina State Senator Rev. Clementa Pinckney—we return to mourning, to honor the victims of an unforgettable tragedy.

Nine precious lives were stolen last Wednesday night by a coward and a murderer. Those were the lives of Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Tywanza Sanders, Myra Thompson, Ethel Lee Lance, Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Susie Jackson, and Rev. Clementa Pinckney. As the families of these victims mourn and lay their loved ones to rest, we want to remind them that the nation mourns with them.

Our friends at ColorofChange.org are delivering flowers to the families along with a card that reads, "Charleston: Brokenhearted, we stand with you." Will you add your name to the card today?

Charleston: Brokenhearted, we stand with you.

Emanuel AME Church truly exemplifies the word historic. The church was founded in 1816 as one of three Methodist Episcopal churches under the Free African Society. In 1822, it was destroyed, burned to the ground, when white South Carolinians were informed of a slave revolt being planned by one of its founders—Denmark Vesey.

The congregation rebuilt and practiced openly until 1834, when all Black churches were outlawed. Forced underground, they continued the tradition of the African church until reorganizing in 1865, and taking the name Emanuel. A church on the current site was destroyed in an earthquake in 1886, but rebuilt again by 1891. The congregation occupies that same 125-year-old building today.

Now again, Mother Emanuel, as it's known, bears witness to tragedy. And now—again—Mother Emanuel's faithful people rebuild. This week, Bible study resumed at the church, as congregants refused to surrender their house of worship to anger, fear, or anything short of prayer and love.

President Obama eulogized Rev. Pinckney today as his funeral service was held in Charleston. On days like this we all stand united, politics aside, embracing this heartbreaking moment as an opportunity to move our nation forward, together.

Please add your name today to our card reminding those families mourning in Charleston that, brokenhearted, we stand with them.

Have an idea for a petition?

Do you have an idea for a petition? Help change the world and start your own MoveOn petition today.

Dear MoveOn member,

Ever heard Margaret Mead's famous saying? "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

That's the story of MoveOn. In 1998, when a Republican Congress was focusing all its efforts on impeaching President Clinton, two people with no political experience started a simple online petition: "Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation."

They shared their petition with their friends, and within days they had hundreds of thousands of signatures. Today, MoveOn has over 8 million members—mostly folks who got involved by signing an online petition, and have stayed active in helping to fight for a progressive America.

That's why we launched MoveOn Petitions where you can start your own online petition and invite your friends to sign it. We'll send the most popular petitions to other MoveOn members to help build support for your cause.

It's easy to get started—just click here.

Thanks!

Ask Amazon to please stop selling Confederate flag posters, T-Shirts, bumper stickers, and Confederate flags

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Mark Whisler, a MoveOn member in Sacramento, CA, and I started a petition to Amazon President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board Jeffrey P. Bezos and Amazon Senior Vice President of Consumer Business Jeffrey A. Wilke, which says:

Symbols of hate and division have no place in American commerce. Respectfully, Amazon: It's time to stand up for what's right and stop selling Confederate flag posters, T-Shirts, bumper stickers, and flags, etc!

The Confederate flag is not a symbol of southern pride but rather a symbol of rebellion and racism. On the heels of the brutal killing of nine Black people in a South Carolina church by a racist terrorist, it's time to put that symbol of rebellion and racism behind us and move toward healing and a better United States of America!

Add your name: Protect Haitians in the Dominican Republic

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Moses St. Louis, a fellow MoveOn member in Port Jefferson Station, NY, and a Haitian-American.

The Dominican Republic constitutional court recently stripped Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent of their citizenships—and many of their rights.1 That's why I started a petition to the Dominican Republic government and President Danilo Medina Sánchez, which says:

As concerned citizens, we call upon Dominican authorities to take all necessary steps to stop ethnic cleansing of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent and protect the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent, whose citizenship has recently been stripped. We want the Dominican government to reverse its racist and discriminatory ruling and to ensure that Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent have access to government-issued identity documents that guarantee their access to education and health services and their universal human rights.

I'm Haitian American and have family living in the Dominican Republic who are affected by this ruling.

We want the world to know how unjust this is. Can you join us in speaking out against ethnic cleansing?

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

The Medicare solution

I am sick and tired of all the lies about Medicare—especially since it's the solution to our health care crisis!
The Big Picture
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

The best shot we've got at saving our broken health care system is to expand Medicare for all Americans.

But first, we have to make something very clear: Medicare critics are wrong. They say that Medicare is a problem. In fact, Medicare is more efficient than private health insurance. It's the solution.

Please watch and share The Medicare Solution to spread the word about what we can and must do to secure Medicare for all.

Medicare

The Medicare Solution
is the latest video in the "Big Picture" series I'm working on with MoveOn.

Here's the bottom line: Allowing all Americans to buy into Medicare through the exchanges set up by the Affordable Care Act would strengthen Medicare and improve American health care, saving all of us money while boosting health outcomes. If you're like me and you're ready to reject partisan lies and tackle rising health care costs head-on, please watch and share The Medicare Solution now.

Thanks for all you do.

Call this morning to stop Fast Track

Dear MoveOn member,

Late last night, House Speaker John Boehner and the House Republicans decided to change the rules.

They didn't like losing last Friday's vote to advance Fast Track—a bill supported by powerful international corporations—so they're calling a do-over. And THIS MORNING, they're holding a new vote on this job-killing corporate giveaway.1

They can only pass this bill with the help of Democrats, including your member of Congress, Representative Gregory Meeks. Unfortunately, Rep. Meeks voted FOR the Fast Track/TPA bill last Friday—which is why he must hear from you now.

Can you call Rep. Meeks right now? You can say something like: "Fast Track is a fast way to put corporate interests ahead of the rest of us. Don't vote with the Republicans to pass this corporate giveaway. Say no to TPA."

Here's where to call:

Representative Gregory Meeks
Phone: (202) 225-3461

Then click here to tell us how the call went.

Last Friday, some Democrats claimed they supported Fast Track because they also wanted to pass a bill known as TAA, which provides support for training workers displaced by corporate trade deals. This time around, TAA isn't even part of the equation.

This is a straight-up vote to support a corporate giveaway that will hurt jobs, consumers, the environment, and financial regulations—and rush massive deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) through Congress. There's no question that Rep. Meeks needs to vote no.

The vote is TODAY.  Call now—and tell him not to vote with Republicans or side with corporations. Tell him to stand with fellow Democrats and vote NO on Fast Track.

Thanks for all you do.

–Justin K., Ben O., Nick, Jo, and the rest of the team

P.S. The horrific tragedy in South Carolina demands a response. We'll be working on that in the days ahead. In the meantime, Republicans aren't postponing this vote, so we can't delay action.

End mass incarceration

Are you ready for our nation to stop building new prisons and start building more schools? I am.
The Big Picture
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

There is nothing just about our criminal justice system. It's racist and destructive. It's not making us safer. And it's a disaster for our economy.

Please watch End Mass Incarceration now to see what we can and must do.

MakePollutersPay

End Mass Incarceration is the latest in the "Big Picture" series I'm working on with MoveOn. And MoveOn members will campaign together on the ideas that we're all most excited about.

So if you're like me—and a growing number of people across the political spectrum—and you want to help tackle discriminatory policing practices and pass smarter sentencing laws, if you're ready for our nation to stop building new prisons and start building more schools, please watch and share End Mass Incarceration now.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

P.S. This is the tenth idea in our "Big Picture" series. In case you missed the first nine, once you've watched End Mass Incarceration, be sure to check out the rest of the videos. Remember: by watching and then sharing individual "Big Picture" videos, you're showing that you're excited about a particular idea—which will help us hone in on what to work on in the coming months.

P.P.S. We just couldn't stop at ten ideas. Stay tuned for two more videos!

No one saw this coming

Breaking news: House Speaker John Boehner has been forced to delay legislation to fast-track approval of the secretive trade deal known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership
Dear MoveOn member,

Breaking news: House Speaker John Boehner has been forced to delay legislation to fast-track approval of the secretive trade deal known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).1

Here's what that means: We're winning. Last Friday, Congress said no to this job-killing corporate giveaway for the first time. And today, Speaker Boehner has had to delay his own "do-over" vote—a stunning blow to the giant corporations that have been pushing this deal.

But the fight is far from over. Just hours ago, Republicans voted to give themselves six more weeks to buy, beg, and borrow enough votes to ram this through.

Can you chip in $3 so we can build off of these victories and beat back the massive corporate campaign over the next six weeks?

Fast Track was supposed to be a slam dunk for corporate America. But an unprecedented movement—of labor, environmental groups, consumer advocates, and millions of regular Americans, including hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members—defied the odds and put conventional wisdom to shame.2

MoveOn members have been organizing against Fast Track and the TPP for years. More recently, we have:

  • Submitted over 100,000 signatures on petitions to protect American jobs, the environment, and consumers against this corporate power grab.
  • Made tens of thousands of calls and office visits, attended rallies, and directed social media pressure at targeted members of Congress.
  • Run a five-figure ad campaign calling out Senators—Republicans and Democrats—who voted for Medicare cuts to fund this bill, and putting all House members on notice.
  • Produced a video about the TPP with Robert Reich—that has circumvented mainstream media and has now been seen 5 MILLION times.

But because corporate lobbyists now know what they are up against, they'll be doubling their efforts to pass this job-killing trade deal. Democrats will feel extraordinary pressure from corporate-backed ad campaigns—and, unfortunately, from the president himself. So if we want to stop this bill, we need to go all out in the next six weeks.

Can you chip in $3 so we can run more ads, join more rallies, and launch new creative actions that will kill Fast Track once and for all?

If this Fast Track bill passes, it will allow corporate powers to rush approval on trade deals that could outsource jobs, undo environmental regulations, and gut financial reforms. And Congress will raid Medicare for $700 million to pay for this insult.3

It's no wonder that Americans from all walks of life have spoken—creating so much pressure that Congress actually stopped this deal.

We have to beat this do-over—and, with your help, we will.

Will you chip in $3 to this six-week campaign?

Thanks for all you do.

Elizabeth Warren's message for you

It's time for real progressive change in America, and Elizabeth Warren is leading the way.
Dear MoveOn member,

This week, thousands of MoveOn members joined Elizabeth Warren for a conference call to discuss the future of America.

She talked about her plans to make college more affordable for middle-class families, to raise the minimum wage, to stop secret trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and to win back control of the U.S. Senate.

In short, she described a true progressive agenda for America—the Elizabeth Warren Agenda—and she asked MoveOn members to help her make it happen.

Are you in?

Click here to chip in and stand with Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Now, as you know, we've spent the last few months encouraging Senator Warren to pursue a new job—and she's graciously declined our suggestion. But if we can't have Elizabeth Warren in the White House, there's no place we'd rather have her than in the U.S. Senate.

And what we heard from her has MoveOn members more fired up than ever.

She slammed the U.S. government for "making billions of dollars in profit off the backs of students."

She promised to "never give up on holding Wall Street accountable."

And she said, "If you don't fight, you can't win. So we need to fight, and we need to fight hard."

But as amazing as Senator Warren is, she needs grassroots support to take on these battles and win. That's where we come in. With millions of members around the country and an amazing team of campaigners and organizers, we've got Elizabeth Warren's back.

It's time for real progressive change in America—and Elizabeth Warren is leading the way. Will you chip in $3 to MoveOn?

Click here to chip in and stand with Elizabeth Warren.

Last day to stop a very bad thing

House Republicans will force a vote tomorrow on a set of bills that would cut $700 million from Medicare, make it easier to pass job-killing corporate trade deals, and undermine financial regulations, environmental protections, and consumer rights.

Dear MoveOn member,

House Republicans will force a vote on Friday morning on a set of bills that would:
  • cut $700 million from Medicare,
  • make it easier to pass job-killing corporate trade deals, and
  • undermine financial regulations, environmental protections, and consumer rights.
The centerpiece of this package—the Trade Promotion Authority or "Fast Track"—is not about trade. Not really. It's about enabling a massive corporate power grab.

But Friday's vote isn't a done deal, thanks to passionate and growing opposition, including hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members from coast to coast. And Democrats have the power to stop it. We have less than 24 hours to reach Democrats in Congress one more time with our unequivocal demand: Say no to Fast Track.

Can spread the word immediately about the Fast Track votes—by sharing this graphic on Facebook or over Twitter? (Not on either? Then please simply forward this email!)

Tell friends on Facebook

Share with your Twitter followers

Corporate lobbyists are counting on the fact that most Americans know very little about these bills. That's why the more we can grab the attention of our friends and families, the closer we'll come to defeating Fast Track on Friday.

It's going to come down to a handful of members of Congress who will make a choice between siding with their constituents, or choosing corporate interests instead. And many of those representatives imagine that their constituents aren't paying attention.

But if we can make enough noise—ringing their phones off the hook, blowing up their Twitter feeds, jamming their Facebook pages with messages, and flooding the media airwaves—they'll realize that their vote on Fast Track will be noticed. And we'll send a message: if you side with corporate power over regular Americans, we will not forget or forgive this vote.

So, call your member of Congress, knock on his or her office door, or just share this graphic on Facebook or on Twitter or forward this email to five friends—so that your friends, neighbors, and online contacts hear why you are passionate about stopping Fast Track in its tracks.

Thank you for all you do.

TONIGHT: Special call with Elizabeth Warren

Don't miss out on tonight's call with Sen. Warren explaining how progressives can work together to win the key fights ahead and keep shaping the Democratic Party.

Dear MoveOn member,

I wanted to make sure you saw Anna's message from Monday. We're hosting a special call with Senator Elizabeth Warren tonight to discuss how progressives can unite around fighting for student loan reform, against the TPP, and in support of the rest of the Warren agenda. Click here to RSVP if you can make tonight's call at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT.

Thanks for all you do.

–Ilya and the rest of the team

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm writing to invite you to an important call with Senator Elizabeth Warren this Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT). Click here to RSVP for the call right now.

Though she's not in the race, with the help of efforts like the Run Warren Run campaign, Sen. Warren's fight against economic inequality has helped drive the presidential debate and move the issue to the forefront of the national political conversation—alongside other key progressive priorities, like pursuing diplomacy over war, getting money out of politics, addressing climate change, answering the call of the growing Movement for Black Lives, acting on the need for immigration reform, and more.

That's why we're excited to have Sen. Warren join us for our first joint effort since the suspension of the Run Warren Run campaign to discuss how progressives can fight together on important issues in the months ahead—including tackling our student debt crisis and defeating Fast Track for the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Will you join Senator Elizabeth Warren, me, other MoveOn members, and Democracy for America members on Wednesday evening?

MoveOn members have stood alongside Sen. Warren time and time again as she's fought for the middle class—from organizing for her proposal to charge student loan borrowers the same low interest rates that banks receive, to backing her successful effort to create a strong and independent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to amplifying her call for expanded Social Security benefits.

When Sen. Warren ran for the Senate in 2012, MoveOn.org Political Action bundled more than $1 million in small contributions to her campaign, and nearly a thousand Massachusetts MoveOn members turned out to volunteer for her.

Suspending the campaign to draft Sen. Warren into the presidential race is the right call at this moment. It'll allow both MoveOn and our partners at Democracy For America to shift our focus to fighting alongside Sen. Warren on key issues and advancing an agenda that puts working and middle-class Americans over corporate interests.

Wednesday's call at 9 p.m. ET is our next big step in this new direction. We hope you'll sign up to join us.

Thanks for all you do.

#9, and this one is a biggie

What would happen if our nation divested from carbon polluters, made the polluters pay a price to pollute, and then collected the money?
The Big Picture
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Here's a big-picture idea: instead of investing in dirty fuels, let's start charging polluters for poisoning our skies and then invest the revenue so that it benefits everyone.

Every ton of carbon that's released into the atmosphere costs our nation between $40 and $100, and we release millions tons of it every year.1,2 Businesses don't pay that cost. They pass it along to the rest of us—in the form of more extreme weather and all the costs to our economy and health resulting from it. What's worse, we've actually invested more than $6 trillion in fossil fuels since 2007.3 Yikes!

Watch Make Polluters Pay to see what would happen if our nation divested from carbon polluters, made the polluters pay a price to pollute, and then collected the money.

MakePollutersPay

Make Polluters Pay is the latest in the "Big Picture" series I'm working on with MoveOn. And MoveOn members will campaign together on the ideas that we're all most excited about.

If you're looking for a win-win when it comes to tackling climate change, you won't want to miss watching and sharing this video.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

P.S. This is the ninth idea in our "Big Picture" series. In case you missed the first eight, once you've watched Make Polluters Pay, be sure to check out the rest of the videos. Remember, by watching and then sharing individual "Big Picture" videos, you're showing that you're excited about a particular idea—which will help us hone in on what to work on in the coming months.
