Tell AARP to stop advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show

Below is an email from Carol Wallin, who started a petition on the MoveOn website, formerly called SignOn.org

AARP: Don't advertise on the Rush Limbaugh Show.

Sign the Petition!

Dear SignOn.org member,

AARP advertising is filling dead air on the Rush Limbaugh Show. Limbaugh calls women "feminazis," "infobabes," "sexretaries," and, worst of all, "sluts" and "prostitutes." Limbaugh calls Latinos "weak," "lazy," and "unskilled."

And, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin murder trial, Limbaugh even used the "n-word" and claimed it was not racist.

Over 2,600 advertisers have stopped supporting Limbaugh's shows, and AARP should follow suit.

That's why I started a petition to AARP President Robert Romasco, which says:

Request stations move AARP to the "No Rush Play List" to support civil discourse.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

George Zimmerman found not guilty

Below is an email from Benjamin Todd Jealous, President of the NAACP, who started a petition on the MoveOn website, formerly called SignOn.org

Sign the petition

Dear SignOn.org member,

On Saturday, a jury acquitted George Zimmerman. But we are not done demanding justice for Trayvon Martin.

We're calling on the U.S. Justice Department to open a civil rights case against George Zimmerman and have launched a petition to Attorney General Eric Holder. The petition says:

The Department of Justice has closely monitored the State of Florida's prosecution of the case against George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin murder since it began. Today, with the acquittal of George Zimmerman, it is time for the Department of Justice to act.

The most fundamental of civil rights—the right to life—was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin. We ask that the Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation.

Please address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today. Thank you.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Gasland 2 in Inwood?

Dear Inwood MoveOn member,

After a holiday weekend, getting back to your usual grind can be tough—so we wanted to remind you of an opportunity to put something fun on your calendar.

Next Sunday, July 14, we're teaming up with Oscar-nominated director Josh Fox for a special nationwide event to watch his new HBO documentary about the fracking industry—Gasland Part II. After the screening, Josh will join us for a strategy briefing call to talk about how we can grow the movement to put an end to fracking.

Hundreds of movie parties are being planned across the country, but we're still looking for hosts in Inwood—so that MoveOn members in your area will have a chance to see this important film. Can you open your home to a Gasland Part II Movie Party in Inwood on Sunday, July 14?

Yes, I'd like to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party, and I have or can get access to HBO.

I don't have access to HBO, but I'd like to sign a petition to stop fracking on public lands.

What could be better than getting together with a few friends and fellow MoveOn members to watch a movie on a Sunday afternoon, and then strategize about how to take on two of the most powerful industries in the world—and win?

Fracking affects nearly every community in the country—whether gas or oil drilling is happening near you, or fracking waste is getting dumped in your community, or your stove or the bus you take to work is powered by fracked gas. MoveOn members and our allies are fighting back and winning, and this is a great opportunity to learn the latest about fracking and plug into a growing people's movement.

Click here to host a movie party.

Thank for all you do.

–Victoria, Manny, Bobby, Rosy, and the rest of the team

P.S. Below is the email from last week, before the holiday blur—read on to find out more about Gasland Part II.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Fox is teaming up with MoveOn members to screen his new documentary Gasland Part II—a jaw-dropping exposé of the fracking industry. Don't miss this opportunity to learn the truth about fracking and join the national movement that's fighting back. You'll need HBO—or a friend with HBO—to host. Can you host a Gasland Part II Movie Party in Inwood on Sunday, July 14?

Host a Movie Party!
Dear MoveOn member,

Imagine being able to light your Inwood tap water on fire.

That's a reality right now in communities across the country as the fossil fuel industry pushes our country into an all-out—and dangerous—"fracking" boom.1

Want to learn more about fracking and how to stop it? We've teamed up with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Fox for a fun, informative, and sobering nationwide event to watch his new HBO documentary Gasland Part II on Sunday, July 14, and you can have a front row seat—in your own living room!

Fracking for gas and oil has been linked to water so contaminated that it catches fire, illness in residential neighborhoods, unusual earthquakes, dead livestock, and tanking property values. And the methane released by fracking is a far more potent global warming gas than carbon dioxide.2

The hopeful news is that MoveOn members are fighting back—and Gasland Part II gives us a powerful new weapon to grow our grassroots movement. That's why hundreds of MoveOn members are signing up to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party on Sunday, July 14.

Hosting a movie screening is easy and very rewarding. We'll provide a host guide with special materials, we'll help you recruit MoveOn members in your area to attend, and we'll invite you to join director Josh Fox and thousands of other MoveOn members for a special briefing after we view the film together. Because the film is only available right now on HBO, you'll need an HBO subscription—or a friend with HBO—to host a movie night. If you don't have HBO, we may be able to match you up with a MoveOn member near you who does.

Will you sign up to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party in Inwood on Sunday, July 14?

Yes, I'd like to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party.

I don't have access to HBO, but I'd like to sign a petition to stop fracking on public lands.

Like Josh's first film, which made "fracking" a household word, Gasland Part II is catalyzing a movement—and if enough of our friends, families, and neighbors work together, we can build the large-scale movement we need to stop fracking. Since the original Gasland debuted in 2010, dozens of cities, towns, and counties—from Pittsburgh, PA to Mora County, NM—have passed local bans on fracking, and MoveOn members in 30 states have launched campaigns to stop this dangerous new form of fossil fuel extraction.3

Gasland Part II is only available on HBO right now, so if you'd like to host but don't have a subscription, ask your friends or family members who might have HBO to team up with you. If you do have HBO, sign up to help MoveOn members near you have the opportunity to watch this amazing film.

I'm hosting a movie party for my friends and neighbors—will you join me and host a Gasland Part II Movie Party in Inwood on Sunday, July 14th?

Yes, I'd like to host a Gasland Part II Movie Night on Sunday, July 14, and I have or can get access to HBO.

I don't have access to HBO, but I'd like to sign a petition to stop fracking on public lands.

I had the opportunity to preview the film, and it gave me the chills. I grew up—and my mom still lives—just a few miles from the largest urban oil field in the country, in Los Angeles, where fracking is happening right now. Neighbors suspect that high rates of cancer are linked to toxic chemicals used in fracking—and they're organizing to stop the fracking from continuing.4

Earlier this week, in his first speech on climate change, President Obama stuck his neck out to reduce carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants, and MoveOn members have applauded him for that. But he also doubled down on propping up the oil and gas industries, even though scientists have shown that extracting and burning gas and oil could be far worse for the climate than coal.5

Banning fracking is the next frontier in the movement to protect our communities and our kids from climate change—and MoveOn members, with Josh Fox, are leading the way.

When people find out the truth about fracking, they rise up to stop it. The MoveOn community of 8 million members has the power to spread the truth, and organize to win.

Click here to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party on Sunday, July 14.

Thanks for all you do.

Let's make some noise this Fourth of July

Hi there—below is an important note we wanted to share from MoveOn member Robert Applebaum and StudentDebtCrisis.org. More than 1,000,000 MoveOn members have signed Robert's petition calling for student loan debt forgiveness, and this day of action on July 4 is another great way to make our voices heard.—Anna

Dear MoveOn member,

By now, you've probably already heard the news that Congress has missed the July 1st deadline for keeping the interest rates low on federally subsidized Stafford loans. Congress knew this deadline was approaching for an entire year, yet our elected officials have, once again, utterly failed to represent the interests of the American people.

Even though they've failed to do their jobs, Senators and Members of Congress from all over the country have gone back home for another vacation and most of them will be participating in local 4th of July parades and events. That's why I'm writing to you today.

Despite all the petitions, letters, phone calls, articles, blog postings, tweets and emails, Congress has ignored the will of the American people and, as a result, college costs for more than 7 million Americans will now go up by $1000 per year, per loan—as if a higher education in America doesn't cost enough already!

Since we know where they're likely to be on the 4th of July, we're asking everyone to show up and confront their Senators and Members of Congress on this issue at your local 4th of July parades and events.

If you care about the issue of affordable higher education and/or the existing $1.1 Trillion in outstanding student loan debt, then please join us by attending your local 4th of July parades and events in your hometown with signs and banners to get the attention of your elected officials. Then, take photos from the events (preferably showing your sign) and share them by uploading them here.

Examples of what to write on your signs include:

  • #DontDoubleMyRate
  • Keep College Affordable!
  • Keep Student Loan Interest Rates Low!
  • The Government Should NOT Profit off the Backs of Students!

Or, click here to print out and use any of the pre-made memes created by Student Debt Crisis and partner organizations:

Thank you, as always, for your continued support! Now, let's all make some noise at our local 4th of July parades and events!

Sincerely,

Rob, Natalia, Kyle, Aaron & The Student Debt Crisis Team

Could you live off $15,000/year?

Below is an email from U.S. Representative Keith Ellison. Rep. Ellison started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

President Obama and Congress: Today's minimum wage can't sustain a family. Create a living wage now.

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

Right now, 40% of Americans make less than the minimum wage from 1968. And while working Americans have spent the last 30 years working more and earning less, the wealthiest have watched as their share of the total income pie grew by 275%.

That's why I'm launching the Raise Up America Campaign, along with other members of Congress and our allies, to spread the call for fair wages and decent working conditions.

It's time to tell the story of Americans who are working harder and harder for less and less, and to push for policies that put more money into the pockets of working people. It's time to raise pay for American workers. It's the right thing to do, and will create millions of good new jobs.

Stand with me in calling on Congress and President Obama to pass a living wage now.

It is unacceptable that the minimum wage today pays only $15,000 per year. That's $3,000 below the poverty level for a family of three. A living wage would help working families still suffering from the effects of the recession, and would boost the economy by putting money in people's pockets.

That's why I started a petition to Congress and President Barack Obama, which says:

Raise Up America: It is long past time to create a living wage to bring millions of hardworking Americans into the middle class.

Stand with me by adding your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Gasland 2

Dear MoveOn member,

I wanted to make sure you saw my note about this opportunity to watch Oscar-nominated director Josh Fox's new documentary about fracking—Gasland Part II—on Sunday, July 14 together with MoveOn members in your area.

Will you host a Gasland Part II Movie Party in Inwood on Sunday, July 14?

Yes, I'd like to host a Gasland Part II Movie Party, and I have or can get access to HBO.

I'd like to, but I don't have HBO, and I'm not sure I have a friend who does.

Movies like these are a powerful way to grow the movement to stop fracking. Thousands of MoveOn members will gather in living rooms across the country to meet like-minded folks, get educated, and discuss action plans to fight fracking at the local level. And, Josh Fox will join us for a special strategy briefing phone call after the movie airs on HBO.

Can you be a part of it?

Yes, I'll host a Gasland Part II Movie Party, and I have or can get access to HBO.

Thank for all you do.

–Victoria
