Super awesome news

We've invented a breakthrough new technique for turning out HUGE numbers of progressive voters. It's been tested with 170,000 voters—and we got the most exciting results in MoveOn's history! We want to roll it out nationwide to save the Senate, win back the House, and hold on to the White House.

WOW! At 5 PM on Friday, a major partner offered to match every dollar donated, up to $500,000. So you'll now get twice the bang for your buck! Can you chip in?

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

I think we may have just discovered the silver bullet that could help us win the whole election.

Two weeks ago, we ran a secret test of a new voter turnout method in a state primary election. There were 170,000 voters in the study. We just got back the results, and our new method was 3.7 times more effective, dollar for dollar, than the best techniques used by campaigns today. Take a look at this simple chart:

Making phone calls |== Sending mail |===== Going door-to-door |======= OUR NEW METHOD |=========================

Let me put that in perspective: Normally, we're delighted if we figure out something that gives us a 10% improvement. This test showed a 370% improvement.

This alone could be enough to tip the balance in the Senate, help Democrats win the House—and maybe even flip two or three swing states.

The challenge: We had no idea we'd get such great results, and to have everything ready in time, we need to commit by Monday!! Which means we have to raise a good portion of the entire $3 million budget by then. Arrgh!

But things are suddenly looking up, because at 5 PM on Friday, I got a call from a major partner who's as excited about this project as we are. They're offering to match every dollar donated, up to $500,000with their own efforts! That means you'll get twice the bang for your buck.

So, whatever you're doing right now, can you take three minutes to make a contribution so that we can use this incredibly powerful new voter turnout method across the country? This is the moment to open up your wallet for this election. Seriously. CODE RED. Please help!

I don't want to look back on Nov. 7—the day after the election—and think, "If only we had a bit more money in late September, we could've won those two crucial Senate races! Or (God forbid) we could've run up the margin enough to keep Republicans from stealing the election!" And I KNOW you don't want to be thinking, "If only I and a few other people had chipped in the price of a pizza, we'd be celebrating right now!"

So I'm trying to make this as clear as I can. This is the most promising set of test results we've EVER seen at MoveOn

I can't give all the details of what we figured out, because we don't want the other side to know. So this has to be somewhat vague. But basically, we took groundbreaking research from social psychology, and for the first time, applied it to voting. And, wow, it really worked!

The question is whether we can raise enough money in the next few days to roll it out nationally. If just 30,000 of us chip in, we can change the outcome of this election. Can you chip in?

Yes, I want to make a donation.

Thanks for all you do.

So long, Tommy?

Tommy Thompson was caught on tape telling tea partiers that he's the best candidate to "do away with Medicaid and Medicare." Now, the devastating video has leaked. We need to capitalize on this moment to win the Senate race in Wisconsin and keep the Senate blue. Can you chip in to Tommy's opponent today?

Donate $5
Dear MoveOn member,

"Who better than me ... to come up with programs to do away with Medicaid and Medicare?"

That's what former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson told a tea party group during his Senate primary in Wisconsin in June.1

Now the bombshell video has leaked, and it's taking off, demolishing Thompson's claims that he's a reasonable moderate.

That means we've got a great opportunity to send progressive fighter Tammy Baldwin to the Senate rather than Thompson. And a win in Wisconsin dramatically reduces the chances of Republicans taking over the Senate.2

News outlets are already running stories with headlines like "Will This Video Sink Tommy Thompson's Wisconsin Senate Hopes?"3 We need to capitalize and make sure it does. Tammy needs our help to do that. Can you chip in $5?

Tammy will be one of the most progressive senators, if she can win. Last year alone, she introduced bills in the House to implement the Buffett Rule and hold banks accountable for defrauding homeowners.4

But Tammy's not the only great progressive with an opportunity to defeat radical Republicans. In Ohio, Sherrod Brown is facing tea partier Josh Mandel, who's repeatedly been caught lying about Sherrod's record.5 So far, Sherrod's history of fighting for working families has stood up to the onslaught, but there's millions of dollars more in Super PAC advertising still coming.

In Connecticut, it's not outside money—but Republican Linda McMahon's almost unlimited personal wealth—that's the problem. She spent $50 million on her failed Senate bid in 2010 and has already spent more than $13 million this year.6 But Chris Murphy's values—fighting for campaign finance reform and quality health care—are much more in line with Connecticut's voters', and he's opened a small lead.

Tammy, Sherrod, and Chris wouldn't just be reliable votes in the Senate. They've already proven themselves as progressive fighters. But they need our help to overcome their radical opponents and keep the Senate Democratic.

Registered to vote?

Republicans are doing everything they can to stop people from voting. The only way we'll win is to make sure progressives turn out on Election Day—and registering to vote is the first step. In New York, you can register by clicking here:

Dear MoveOn member,

Are you registered to vote? Are you sure? Are all your friends and family registered voters?

I hope so, because Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republicans are doing everything they can to STOP people from voting. In some states they're using discriminatory voter suppression laws, in some they're flooding airwaves with deceptive negative ads—but the goal is the same. They know that a low turnout election is their surest path to victory.

Most Americans share our values—they want to protect Medicare and Social Security, they want the rich to pay their fair share in taxes, they want to invest in education and jobs. If everyone voted, Republicans wouldn't stand a chance.

But the fact is, too many of them aren't voters—and millions of progressives aren't even registered. Let's change that right now.

Voting registration deadlines are coming up fast, and in New York people can now register online—electronically, with nothing to print out—by clicking here:

http://www.dmv.ny.gov/mydmv/motv-pop.htm

You might think everyone you know is already registered, but now is the time to double-check and pass this email along. Asking a friend or family member is one of the most effective ways to get someone to register to vote. It's our responsibility to reach out and make sure all progressives are registered voters who get to the polls on Election Day.

If you know anyone in New York who is not a registered voter, who has moved recently, or if you're not sure whether someone is a registered voter, forward this email and ask your friends and family to register here:

http://www.dmv.ny.gov/mydmv/motv-pop.htm

In 2008, 6 million people didn't vote because they missed a deadline or didn't know how to register.1 This election is going to come down to how many progressives turn out, and it all starts with registering in time.

Thanks for all you do.

–Anna, Robin, Ilya, Joan and the rest of the team

P.S. If you know people outside of New York who need to register, they can register at: moveon.org/vote

Five guys took a boy band anthem and made this Romney parody

Dear MoveOn member,

This is one of the best Romney parodies we've seen, hands down!

The video has already skyrocketed to more than 2 million views. Could these guys have shamed Romney into finally releasing his 2011 tax returns on Friday? Maybe they can help us get to the bottom of what else Romney is hiding. Watch the video and find out!

I've got to warn you, though: if you're offended by young men in bathing suits, dancing around a pool, you might want to skip this video.

We need a call party in Inwood

To match the conservative voter turnout effort, we're throwing Five Weeks to Win call parties to help get out the vote in swing states. We need a party in Inwood—can you host one on September 29 or 30?

Host a Party!

Dear MoveOn member,

Voter turnout is usually our side's bread and butter, but there's "growing evidence that new voter-outreach programs funded by conservative groups could give GOP nominee Mitt Romney an edge."1

This isn't just talk: The RNC recently added 63 organizers, the NRA is spending less on ads and more on getting out the vote, and the Koch Brothers' Super PAC has 116 people on staff—all paid professionals using wedge issues like gay marriage to boost Republican turnout.2

So we're responding by throwing hundreds of Five Weeks to Win call parties on September 29 and 30. We'll call MoveOn members in swing states to get them talking to folks who supported Obama in 2008 but might not vote in November. If we can reach people now—before the onslaught of negative ads over the final weeks—our "get out and vote!" message has a better chance of sinking in.

We need a party in Inwood to hit our goals and show the Koch Brothers that they can't match our people power. Parties are simple and fun to host, and you'll get plenty of support. Can you host a Five Weeks to Win call party on September 29 or 30?

Yes, I can host a party!

I can't, but I support Obama.

Last weekend alone, we called over 100,000 MoveOn members at nearly 500 call parties, and this week, thousands of members are going door-to-door talking to real voters in places like Florida and Ohio about why it's important to vote for Obama.

To beat conservatives in getting out the vote, we need enough volunteers for the final stretch. Hosting a call party is one of the easiest ways to multiply your impact this election, and we need more parties to help re-elect President Obama.

Can you throw a Five Weeks to Win party on September 29 or 30?

Yes, I can host a party!

I can't, but I support Obama.

Thanks for all you do.

Fight suppression, register to vote

Tuesday, Sept. 25, is National Voter Registration Day! Hundreds of groups are joining together to get people registered and promote democracy. To find and RSVP for an event near you, click here:

Find an Event!

Dear MoveOn member,

In 2008, 6 million people didn't vote because they missed a deadline or didn't know how to register.1 With voter registration deadlines coming up in many states, let's make sure those voices get heard in 2012.

Hundreds of civic groups, like the League of Women Voters and Voto Latino, have organized hundreds of events on Tuesday, September 25—National Voter Registration Day. All over the country, volunteers and celebrities will hit the streets for a single day of coordinated outreach to register voters.

Our allies are planning hundreds of simple and fun events. The more people who participate, the more people we'll actually register. Can you sign up to help register voters and raise awareness on Tuesday?

Click here to RSVP for a National Voter Registration Day event near Inwood.

With voting rights under attack, it's more important than ever to get registered to vote. By joining together on the same day, integrating field and online technology, we'll help make sure voters know how, when, and where they can register to vote.

On Tuesday, we'll register voters where they work, travel, and play—at main transportation hubs, shopping malls, concerts, and sporting events. We're making it as easy as possible to make sure everyone has the information they need to vote this November.

There's a National Voter Registration event near you. Can you stop by and help register voters and promote awareness?

Yes, I want to find an event near me!

No, but I want more information on how to register to vote.

Thanks for all you do.

Seize the moment: Host a call party in Inwood

We're seizing the moment to make sure undecided voters in swing states know about Romney's 47% comments. We're organizing hundreds of call parties to recruit critical swing state volunteers. Can you host a Five Weeks to Win call party on September 29 or 30?

Host a Call Party!

Dear MoveOn member,

In every campaign, there is a turning point, and Mitt Romney's 47% speech may be it.

A hidden camera caught Mitt Romney telling his rich donors that nearly half our country—47% of Americans—are freeloaders mooching off the government1:

"My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

People everywhere are outraged and offended. This is a HUGE opportunity to persuade undecided voters that Romney is the wrong choice for president. There's no shortcut—we need to get as many volunteers as possible in swing states talking to voters about Romney's comments right away.

That's why we're throwing Five Weeks to Win call parties to recruit more swing state volunteers who can engage with voters face-to-face. Last weekend's call parties were a blast—and incredibly effective: We recruited thousands of new volunteers. As one party-goer put it: "Being on the leading edge to re-elect President Obama, with millions of activists, feels GREAT!" To keep the momentum going, we need hundreds more parties to ensure long lines of Democratic voters on Election Day.

Can you host a Five Weeks to Win call party in Inwood on September 29 or 30?

Yes, I can host a party!

Sorry, I can't.

Romney's 47% speech alone won't amount to a turning point in the campaign unless we seize this opportunity. Our strategy is to use volunteer power to show swing voters that Romney's comment about the 47% wasn't a gaffe—it was clear evidence of how Republicans think about the American people and why their policies favor the rich, not anyone else.

We've joined forces with the AFL-CIO and other partners to create the single largest independent get-out-the-vote program in the country. At 19 million members strong, together we're recruiting volunteers to talk with voters one-on-one. Decades of political science research shows that talking face-to-face with voters is dramatically more effective than anything else.

Experts say that right now, after the conventions are over, is when most voters are tuned in and making up their minds. This is a good time to persuade voters in swing states about Mitt's disdain for 47% of the population. Hosting a Five Weeks to Win party is an easy way to seize this moment, simply by opening up your living room.

Can you host a party on September 29 or 30?

Yes, I can host a party!

Sorry, I can't.

Thanks for all you do.

What's your 47% story?

Tell Mitt Romney: I'm not a victim, I'm a voter! Create a YouTube video to share your personal story. It might end up on TV! Click the link below for details:

Create your video!
Dear MoveOn member,

Mitt Romney's closed door fundraiser comments show what he really thinks about half of Americans: they're moochers and deadbeats.

Romney said that the 47 percent of Americans who will vote for Obama are "dependent" on government, think of themselves as "victims," and will never "take personal responsibility for their lives." He was talking about you, me, and millions of other Americans.1

He's talking about seniors on Medicare, who spent their entire adult lives paying taxes. He's talking about military families, who give everything for our country. And he's talking about college students, working to create future careers.

We need to show Romney what happens when you write off half the country. So, we're asking you to make your own video response to Romney, with your own story—How you're not a "victim," you're a voter.

We'll turn the best video into a TV ad for critical swing states, and we'll share some of the most moving stories on social media with more than 400,000 Facebook fans and almost 75,000 Twitter followers. But we need to jump into this moment right away, so we'll only be accepting submissions until midnight Pacific Standard Time tonight!

Click here to find out how to share your story!

Mitt Romney risks alienating more than 47% of voters with his comments. That's seniors, students, and soldiers he's talking about—responsible Americans who have contributed to society. And guess what? He doesn't think he should even have to "worry about those people."2

Let Mitt Romney know that you're not a victim, you're a voter. Just tell your story, then upload your 26-second video and send us the link. Click here for instructions.

You can also help a friend, family member, or neighbor tell their story, by helping to record and upload their video.

Don't forget: we'll only be accepting submissions until midnight PST tonight. And your story just might end up on national TV or spread virally on social media!

Thanks for all you do.

Romney may have just lost the election

Mitt Romney just insulted almost half of all Americans, telling us that we see ourselves as victims and don't "take personal responsibility for their lives." This is the kind of gaffe that could sink his entire campaign. Click here to chip in $5 and help deliver the knock-out punch to the flailing Romney campaign.

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

Mitt Romney may have just lost the election with his incredibly insulting comments that almost half of all Americans are "dependent on government" and "believe they are victims."1

The Romney campaign is on the ropes, and we have a chance to put him away for good.

Click here to donate $5 to help deliver the knock-out punch to Mitt Romney.

Your donation will help us run the largest independent get-out-the-vote operation in the country.

MoveOn's 7 million members have joined forces with the massive power of the labor movement to create a wave of votes that Romney won't be able to overcome. No one else in the progressive movement is doing anything like it.

Here's how it works: We're going door-to-door talking to real voters about why it's so important to vote for Obama. Research shows that this face-to-face communication is dramatically more effective than big-budget TV ads.

And using some cutting-edge technology, we're able to pinpoint the people who are most likely to be persuaded and mobilized by a conversation with our volunteers. One canvasser can now do the work of five.

And frankly, after Mitt Romney insulted half the country, it's going to be a heck of a lot easier to convince people to vote for Obama—if we can get out there and talk to them RIGHT NOW. We can't sit back and trust that his breathtaking arrogance and 1% attitude is enough to lose the election—there's still a boatload of voter suppression, plus the possibility of an October surprise. And not everyone is paying attention to what's on the news—so we need to seize this opportunity NOW.

Can you chip in 5?

Yes, I can contribute $5.

Thanks for all you do.

Yes, petitions really do work

Dear MoveOn member,

A couple months ago, an attorney in New York named Robert Applebaum started up a petition for student loan forgiveness using our website, SignOn.org. Robert's petition spread quickly, especially after we emailed it to our list.

Then, something really amazing happened. President Obama actually responded—not with a form letter, but with an actual change in policy that will lower student loan payments for over 1.6 million people.

Of course, Robert didn't do this alone, and this isn't the total solution to the student debt problem. But it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that petitions can make a difference.

Now it's your turn. Using SignOn.org, you can start your own online petition on any issue—local or national—and invite your friends to sign it. We'll send the most popular petitions to other SignOn.org members to help build support for your cause.

Click here to start your own petition on SignOn.org right now.

Thanks for all you do.

Here's a sample message to send to your friends:

Hi,

Our daughter Brittani was killed in a tragic and brutal car accident three days before her twenty-third birthday--just a week before her college graduation.

Brittani had dedicated her life to serving people and making people's lives better. She had her whole life ahead of her.

When Brittani died, she still had student loans to pay off, and for more than three years Citibank demanded repayment from our family. While we grieved, Citibank continued to demand payment, and we struggled to pay these bills monthly.

Our family is lucky. After more than three years of begging and pleading with Citibank, we started an online petition. With the help of our friends, MoveOn, and so many others, our petition spread fast. And once Citibank started to feel public pressure, they agreed to forgive Brittani's student debt.

But we're not the only ones who have had this experience with Citibank and other big banks. Citibank received a taxpayer bailout, while most families get no help when they need it most.

No one should have to go through think kind of ordeal. Citibank should institute a policy of student loan forgiveness when a student dies and stop going after family members.

So I created a petition to Citibank Student Loans - Michael Reardon, CEO, Citibank - Vikram Pandit, CEO, and Discover - David Nelms, CEO, which says:

We are asking that Citibank institute a policy of loan forgiveness when a student dies, rather than going after family members.

Our daughter died--her student loans didn't

Below is an email from Keith and Michelle Norris, MoveOn members who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

Our daughter Brittani was killed in a tragic and brutal car accident three days before her twenty-third birthday—just a week before her college graduation.

Tell Citibank to stop trying to collect student debt from grieving families after their child dies.

Our family is lucky. After more than three years of pleading with Citibank, we started an online petition on SignOn.org. With the help of friends, MoveOn, and so many others, our petition spread fast. And once Citibank started to feel public pressure, they called us and agreed to forgive Brittani's student debt.

But what about all the other families in this situation? No one should have to go through this kind of ordeal. And we know we're not the only ones who have had this experience with Citibank and other big banks.

Citibank received a taxpayer bailout, while most families get no help when they need it most. Citibank should institute a policy of student loan forgiveness when a student dies and stop going after family members.

Inwood: Call to boost turnout in swing states

We're throwing Voters Rising call parties on Sept. 15 and 16 to recruit members in swing states to get them talking to voters next week. There's a Voters Rising party in Jamaica on Saturday at 4:30 PM. Can you come?

RSVP Now!

Dear MoveOn member,

The numbers are still coming in, but it looks like President Obama got a significant bounce in the polls following the Democratic Convention.1 But bounces don't always stick.

The question is, how can we turn the convention bounce into an insurmountable lead and a second term for President Obama? The answer: Voter turnout.

We teamed up with AFL-CIO affiliate Workers' Voice for the largest independent get-out-the-vote program in the country. Now, we need to get MoveOn members in swing states talking to voters who might otherwise skip the election. So in states where the race for the White House isn't as close, we're organizing election call parties to call fellow MoveOn members in swing states and ask them to volunteer.

Like in 2008, MoveOn members from coast-to-coast will help tip the balance in swing states with election call parties. The gatherings are a fun time with good people, and they're effective too: an ask from one member to another is one of the best ways to sign up volunteers.

That's why we're throwing Voters Rising call parties this weekend, September 15 and 16, to mobilize the grassroots for action quickly. If we do this from now through Election Day, we can help President Obama pull ahead for good.

There's a Voters Rising call party in Jamaica on Saturday at 4:30 PM. Can you make it?

Yes, I'll be there!

No, but I can make a few calls.

According to Nate Silver of The New York Times, if every registered voter casts a ballot on Election Day, there's a 91% chance that President Obama wins—91%!2

There's no better use of your time this election than helping get every swing state voter to the polls for President Obama, and it's critical to our future.

Call parties are a fun way to take action, and with nearly 500 parties across the country, these gatherings will pack a big electoral punch. There's a party at 4:30 PM in Jamaica, and we need members like you to make it a powerful party. Can you make it?

Yes, I'll be there!

No, but I can make a few calls.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. MoveOn members have fought hard against Citizens United and to keep unlimited corporate out of politics. Ironically, the Workers' Voice program of the AFL-CIO takes advantage of one of the only positive aspects of Citizens United—by forming a Super PAC, union members are now able to talk to non-union members about the importance of voting (legally unions weren't able to do this before). So by partnering with the Workers' Voice Super PAC, we can mobilize hundreds of thousands of volunteers to reach out to millions of voters at a scale that was previously impossible. The Workers' Voice Super PAC is funded by small dollar contributions from millions of union members.

Tweet about Mitt's flip

Mitt Romney went on national TV and said that he supported coverage for people with pre-existing conditions when his real plan could leave up to 89 million Americans without care. We're flooding Twitter asking the mainstream media to cover Mitt's flip so voters know he really stands with insurance companies. Can you join in?

Tweet Now!

Dear MoveOn member,

Mitt Romney shouted from the rooftops on "Meet the Press" yesterday that he supported the Obamacare provision requiring insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions.

Then a Romney campaign spokesperson took it back in a whisper a few hours later.1 Because, in fact, under Romney's plan, 89 million people could be excluded for pre-existing conditions.2

Romney's first statement was broadcast nationally and covered extensively, but there's been almost no coverage of his campaign taking it back—or that Romney's real plan could leave up to 89 million Americans without care.

This is an old trick, so Romney can get credit with voters for supporting a popular Obama policy, that he really plans on destroying. And we can't let him get away with it.

That's why we're flooding Twitter asking the mainstream media to cover Romney's flipflop on pre-existing conditions. Because Twitter is so public and the news media loves to follow it, if enough of us pile on we'll be able to pressure the mainstream media to call out Mitt's Olympic sized backflip. Can you join us now?

Mainstream media: tell the real story about Mitt's flip.

Here's the Tweet we're suggesting:

RT if U want TV news 2 cover @MittRomney's #FlipFlop on #preexisting conditions! @NBCnews @CNN @ABC @CBSnews @FoxNews

Thanks for all you do.

Hi,

When Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York and President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, delivered the benediction at the Democratic and Republican conventions, he told reporters that he was there only to pray, not to endorse a candidate.

But back in his very own archdiocese, a Catholic parish is distributing an endorsement of Mitt Romney. In last Sunday's bulletin, a parish priest reprinted a letter from former Vatican ambassadors which concludes: "We urge our fellow Catholics, and indeed all people of good will, to join with us in this full-hearted effort to elect Governor Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States."

Cardinal Dolan's constant incendiary attacks on President Obama's health care policies have created a situation in which a priest in his very own diocese thinks it's acceptable to use a Sunday bulletin for partisan politics. If he's serious about staying out of this election, Dolan must instruct his priests to refrain from distributing partisan campaign materials and issue a pastoral letter clarifying that the church is not endorsing Mitt Romney.

Sign our petition to Cardinal Timothy Dolan!

So I created a petition to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York and President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which says:

Cardinal Dolan, you've said you're not endorsing a candidate, and it's time to show you mean it. Please immediately instruct the priests in your diocese to refrain from distributing partisan campaign materials and issue a pastoral letter clarifying that the church is not making any endorsements.

We need more parties in Inwood

Dear MoveOn member,

Thursday night, civil rights leader and hero Rep. John Lewis delivered a powerful speech about the right to vote. He reminded a nation:

"Your vote is precious, almost sacred. Your vote is the most powerful non-violent tool we have to create a more perfect union."1

He's right, and that's why our Voters Rising election program aims to get swing state voters to "march to the polls" as Rep. Lewis implored.2 We're partnering with the AFL-CIO to run the largest independent voter turnout program in America—employing a revolutionary method to make talking with voters door-to-door five times more effective than before.

On September 15 and 16, we're throwing Voters Rising call parties to recruit MoveOn members in Florida, Nevada, Ohio, and other swing states to volunteer at local campaign offices. But we need a few more parties in Inwood to hit the national goals. Can you host on September 15 or 16?

Yes, I can host!

I can't host, but I want to make calls from home.

Thanks for all you do.
