Crucial time for Ilya

Dear MoveOn member,

Early voting started on Monday in Ilya Sheyman's key primary race. We're now in the most critical period of the race that insider publications like The Hill are calling a "proxy battle between two wings of the Democratic Party."1

This is our chance to get a true progressive elected to office instead of a conservative businessmen who gives thousands of dollars to Republicans and is backed by centrist "pro-business" groups.2

With voters already casting ballots and deciding whom to vote for, it's extremely important that they hear from volunteers like you.

Our friends at Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee are running their innovative Call Out the Vote program, where volunteers from across the country can make calls to key voters in Ilya's district. It's really easy to use and very effective. The next Call Out the Vote shift for Ilya is tomorrow evening. Can you make it?

Thanks for all you do.

VICTORY: Bush tax cuts veto threat

Dear MoveOn member,

The Obama administration made a public commitment to veto any extension the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2%.1 You and 250,000 fellow MoveOn members helped make that happen by signing our two petitions asking the president to make this commitment. Thank you.

Share this victory with your friends and family on Facebook or Twitter.

This is a big victory, but it's only the beginning.

A huge fight will happen after the election over taxes and revenue. President Obama has taken away the Republican leverage on taxes by clearly saying he won't extend these tax cuts. But beyond taxes, there's a lot more at stake, like unemployment insurance benefits and defense spending.

We have to stay dedicated to encouraging the president and Democrats to make their positions clear, so they can negotiate with Republicans from a position of strength at the end of the year. So we'll run more campaigns between now and then to get them to commit to positions that benefit the 99%.

Share this progressive win with your friends and family on Facebook or Twitter.

Thank you for all you've done thus far, and all you do going forward.

Radical assault

Women voters outnumber men by millions. We need to let them know about the GOP's war on women, so we can finally put a stop to the attacks. Can you help raise $175,000 to fight back?

Chip in $5
Dear MoveOn member,

Women voters outnumber men by millions.1 Maybe Republicans should have thought of that before launching "the most comprehensive and radical assault on women's health in our lifetime," according to House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi.2

Republicans are challenging President Obama's plan to provide free contraception coverage to women through their health insurance.3 And on Friday, House Republicans passed another bill stripping all federal funding from Planned Parenthood, which would block access to vital breast and cervical cancer screenings.4 Their actions will cost the lives of countless women if we don't stop them.

We've proved we can do just that, by working with progressive allies to prevent devastating funding cuts to Planned Parenthood in the past.5 But with Republicans clearly turning women's health into a social wedge issue this election, we need to tell the millions of women voters just what's at stake—their health, their lives, and their choice—with a multi-part campaign in partnership with our friends at Ultraviolet.

Our creative team is ready to shoot a hard-hitting TV ad to kick off the campaign, but we need to have the funding ready to go. Can you help raise $175,000 to stop the GOP's war on women's health?

Yes, I'll chip in $5.

Republican attacks on women's health are almost too many to mention, but here are some of the lowlights:

  • 'Let Women Die' Bill. House Republicans passed a bill that would allow hospitals that receive federal funds to deny patients access to abortion procedures, even if such a procedure is necessary to save a woman's life.6
  • Contraception. Just last week, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa chaired a hearing on President Obama's plan to provide contraception coverage to women, but blocked all testimony from women's health advocates.7
  • Redefining Rape. In a bill to prevent taxpayer funding for abortions, House Republicans tried to redefine rape as "forcible rape" only, which would exclude statutory rape and women who are drugged or verbally threatened.8
  • Forced Ultrasound. Republicans in the Virginia legislature have just passed a bill requiring women to have an invasive vaginal probe ultrasound before they're permitted to have an abortion.9

These attacks won't stop until those who lead them are made to pay a political price. If we tell women about the GOP's war on women's health, we can make Republicans pay that price. Can you contribute $5 to fight back against the GOP's war on women's health?

http://pol.moveon.org/donate/waronwomen.html?bg_id=hpc5&id=36071-10220574-4MK1%3Djx&t=3

Thanks for all you do.

–Elena, Amy, Laura, Carrie, and the rest of the team

P.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has announced that the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee will convene to hear from one woman whose testimony was blocked by Congressman Issa, but Republican Dan Lundgren is refusing to allow her testimony to be recorded for public view.10 Click here to donate $5 and help make women's voices heard on women's health.

Start a petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, we asked you in a survey what local issues you're paying close attention to, and you answered: "The arrogance of local government in dealing with citizens and their overweening ambition in growing their power."

MoveOn can't take up every important local issue—but did you know that you can start up your own online petition on this or any issue on our new website, SignOn.org?

Creating a petition is incredibly easy—in just a couple short clicks, you can immediately start sharing your petition with friends to collect signatures.

Click here to start your own petition on SignOn.org right now.

Thanks for all you do.

UPDATE: Tell President Obama yourself

Dear MoveOn member,

In just two days, nearly 17,000 people have signed the "We the People" version of our petition calling on President Obama to commit to vetoing the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

We only need 8,000 more signatures to guarantee a response from the White House on this issue. Can you ask your friends, family, and co-workers to sign?

Help make the White House respond by sharing this petition on Facebook.

Thanks for all you do.

–Garlin, Elena, Ryan, Amy, and the rest of the team

Sign our "We the People" petition on the White House website today. It says:

President Obama: "Commit to veto any legislation that extends the Bush tax cuts for the 1%."

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

Great news—more than 216,000 people signed our petition calling on President Obama to commit to vetoing the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

Now there's a new way for us to get a direct response from the White House. President Obama has created "We the People," an online system for people to petition the administration directly.1 They've committed to respond to any petition with 25,000 signatures or more, and have done so several times.

That's why we're going directly online to the White House to get an answer from the President. We created a "We the People" petition, with the same text as the MoveOn petition you signed, insisting that President Obama commit to vetoing the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

We need 25,000 people to sign the new "We the People" version of the petition this week in order to guarantee a response to the petition from the White House. Will you sign?

Click here to directly tell President Obama to veto the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

The President has responded to popular "We the People" petitions that have mirrored MoveOn campaigns in the past, including the student loan reform campaign. In that case, a MoveOn member created a petition that generated hundreds of thousands of signatures, and then those people signed the same petition again on "We the People."2

If enough of us who care deeply about restoring fairness to our tax code by making the 1% pay their fair share of taxes quickly sign and share this petition, we'll get a real, substantive response from the president. This is one of the best ways we can push the president to make a firm commitment to vetoing the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

Sign and share the "We the People" petition to veto the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

Thanks for all you do.

Undermining Obama's courage

Click here to sign your name:
"Senators: Block any efforts to revive the dangerous Keystone XL tar sands pipeline."

Sign the Petition!
Dear MoveOn member,

The U.S. Senate is about to undo one of our movement's biggest recent victories—and we only have 24 hours to stop them.

Last month, President Obama stood up to oil industry lobbyists, and threats from Republicans, by rejecting the permit for the dangerous Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

But as early as tomorrow, the Senate may vote to undermine the president's authority and greenlight construction of the pipeline without any environmental or economic review. As you read this, the oil lobbyists are tightening the screws on the remaining senators they need to get this thing passed.

To stop them, we need a remarkable response. That's why for the next 24 hours we're joining with dozens of organizations from across our movement to collect and deliver 500,000 messages to the Senate.

We don't have a second to lose. Can you sign the petition to the Senate right away and then share it with your friends?

Click here to tell the Senate to say no to Keystone XL.

Twenty-four hours from now, a team in Washington, D.C., will march into the Senate with 50 giant boxes, each holding 10,000 signatures (or more!). It will be our voices against the dollars of the fossil fuel industry.

There is no way to build Keystone XL without accelerating production of the tar sands, and heavy tar sands oil creates three times more carbon pollution than conventional oil.1 In fact, NASA's top climate scientist says that the development of tar sands means "game over" for the climate.2

And when an inevitable spill happens, crude oil from Keystone XL would pollute the Ogallala aquifer, a critical drinking water source for American farms and millions of Americans in the Midwest. The truth is that the only people benefiting from this pipeline would be Big Oil—every single claim about the positive economic impacts has been proven false by independent review.3

That why for the next 24 hours, it's all hands on deck. Dozens of organizations are working together, and we will be joined by bloggers, media figures, and our celebrity allies to make our message unavoidable. But we also need to share this petition as far and wide as we can.

Click here to add your name:

Eating my words

Dear MoveOn member,

When Ilya Sheyman, MoveOn's former mobilization director, told me a year ago that he was running for Congress, I told him he was crazy.

Don't get me wrong—I thought he'd be an amazing member of Congress. A real game changer. And I knew he was running in a Democratic district in Illinois to unseat one of the most vulnerable tea party Republicans in the country.

I knew he was a brilliant organizer—we fought side by side for health care reform and against the corporate capture of our democracy. But still, candidates this good usually don't win in our system.

Well, I'm eating my words. With just five weeks left until the primary, he's winning! The latest poll has him beating his wealthy Democratic primary opponent, who has a long history of donating to Republicans. Thanks to small donor contributions pouring in from around the country, Ilya is even raising more money than his opponents.

But the primary is going to be incredibly close. And Ilya's campaign will need to make its final decisions about how many ads they can afford in the next couple of days. I'm donating (again) to make sure he has the resources to win. Will you join me?

Primaries—where real progressives like Ilya face off against establishment Democrats—start in a few weeks. And once they're over, our best opportunity to move Congress and the Democratic Party toward our progressive ideals will be over, too.

There's no doubt that Ilya's voice in Congress would be a game changer. I should know ... I used to work with him. He's a tenacious progressive and a bold strategist.

So when people like Ilya decide to run, we have to have their backs. Ilya's campaign is making their final ad spending decisions in the next few days. Can you chip in to make sure that he has the money he needs to win?

Thanks for all you do.

Accountability for Wall Street

The foreclosure fraud settlement announced today is flawed, but it's not the "Get Out of Jail Free" card that banks wanted. Now we need to make sure Wall Street banks are held accountable in the federal investigation. Can you call the White House to let them know we'll continue to insist on real accountability for big banks?

White House comment line:

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

State attorneys general just announced a major settlement on foreclosure fraud, or "robosigning."1 For over a year, banks have been fighting tooth and nail for a deal that would have given them a "Get Out of Jail Free" card for their actions that caused the economic crisis.2 Today they didn't get it, thanks to the efforts of MoveOn members and other progressives, who helped a brave group of state attorneys general stand up to the banks.

The final settlement still has major flaws, but it's very limited in scope—it won't let banks off the hook for the majority of their role in taking down the economy. It also provides a small first step towards compensating homeowners who were directly affected, though it's not nearly enough.

In short, we stopped the banks from getting all of what they wanted. But we haven't nearly started to hold them fully accountable to the American people.

For every family helped by this deal, there are many, many more who still face foreclosure or who owe the bank far more than their home is worth. We all have to keep fighting hard to make sure they get the help they need and that we hold banks fully accountable.

President Obama's federal investigation task force, co-chaired by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, is just getting started, and is going to face major obstacles from banks fighting hard to conceal their actions—-and from their allies in the administration.4 That's why we need to tell the White House we'll be watching the investigation to make sure it truly holds banks accountable, and that we're committed to fighting to make sure banks deal fairly with homeowners who are trying to reset their mortgages to fair market value. Your calls and commitment got us this far—now let's keep it going.

Bank deal down to the wire

The foreclosure fraud settlement is coming down to the wire. Can you call President Obama and ask him to oppose any settlement deal that would give banks broad immunity or fail to create real, enforceable, help for homeowners?

White House comment line:

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

This time we're really down to the wire. Five big Wall Street banks and a roomful of state attorneys general are making the final decision on whether homeowners who were illegally foreclosed on are going to get a fair shake.1

They're negotiating the final terms of a settlement deal that will either bring real relief to homeowners or let banks off the hook for many of their most harmful practices. And the big banks don't just want immunity from future investigations, they want an end to the lawsuits already filed by New York, Massachusetts, and Nevada.2

Details of the settlement have not yet been released, which means we can still work to make sure that any deal state attorneys general reach with the big banks includes real help for homeowners across the country, with strong enforcement and no broad immunity for wrongdoing.3

President Obama supported an investigation of the Wall Street bank practices that caused the crash, but now we need him to stand up for homeowners by opposing any settlement deal that would let banks off the hook or fail to create real, enforceable help for homeowners.

We're in the last few days of negotiation on this multistate settlement, and the big banks are holding up help for those hurt by their fraudulent practices because they want to be let off the hook completely for robo-signing and foreclosure fraud.4

The president can make a real difference for homeowners right now by insisting that a deal include real, enforceable help for homeowners, and not give big banks broad immunity. Can you call and ask President Obama to do right by homeowners and hold banks accountable?

Veto the Bush tax cuts for the 1%

Click here to sign your name:
President Obama:
"Commit to veto any legislation that extends the Bush tax cuts for the 1%."

Sign the Petition!
BREAKING: Prop 8 was just ruled unconstitutional by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The ruling states that "Proposition 8 serves no purpose other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California." It's a great day for equality!

Dear MoveOn member,

Most of us think that the presidential election will be the major battle in 2012 between President Obama and the Republicans. But another huge fight will happen after the elections are over, when Congress will vote whether or not to end the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

President Obama can end this fight before it begins by committing to veto any deal that extends the Bush tax cuts for the 1% today.

At the end of 2010, Republicans held important safety net programs like unemployment insurance hostage in order to get the Bush tax cuts for the 1% passed. They'll try the same thing this year, but the president can take away their leverage by stating unequivocally that he will not extend the Bush tax cuts for the 1% under any circumstances.

The president made the case for vetoing the extension of tax cuts during the State of the Union last month. Here's what he said:1

Do we want to keep these tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans? Or do we want to keep our investments in everything else—- like education and medical research; a strong military and care for our veterans? Because if we're serious about paying down our debt, we can't do both...we need to change our tax code so that people like me, and an awful lot of members of Congress, pay our fair share of taxes.

None of the Republican schemes will work if President Obama makes it clear right now that he will not extend the Bush tax cuts for the 1%. He can do this today to demonstrate his commitment to the 99%. If enough of us sign, he'll know that we'll have his back if he doesn't back down.

Will you sign our petition asking the president to commit to vetoing any legislation that extends the Bush tax cuts for the 1%?

The lost revenue sitting in the bank accounts of the 1% is money that the country needs to fix and build infrastructure, fund education, and care for the elderly who depend on Medicare. It will help grow the innovative energy and information economies of the future.

Mitt Romney and other Republicans continue to make it clear that they have little interest in these types of necessary investments. Instead, they want to protect the 1% at all costs.

President Obama can draw a sharp contrast with his opponent in the election by committing today to fight for the 99%. We need a firm, specific commitment from him today not to extend the Bush tax cuts for the 1% so that there's no doubt where he will stand in December.

Will you sign our petition asking the president to commit to vetoing any legislation that extends the Bush tax cuts for the 1%?

Thanks for all you do.

The 99% needs a movie party in Inwood

Dear MoveOn member,

Remember how Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth inspired a wave of interest and action on climate change? There's a must-see film narrated by Matt Damon about how Wall Street crashed the economy—and it can do the same for 99%.

Inside Job is the type of movie that makes your blood boil. But more importantly, it makes you want to take action to fix a system rigged for the 1%.

That's why we're throwing hundreds of Inside Job movie parties next weekend, February 11 and 12. Currently, there are more MoveOn members in Inwood than parties to accomodate them—so we need your help.

Can you host a movie party so that more MoveOn members can see Inside Job next weekend?

Yes! I can host an Inside Job movie party.

Thanks for all you do.

–Lenore, Mark, Marika, Sarah, and the rest of the team

P.S. In case you missed it, here's the email from last week with more information about the movie parties.

MoveOn members are organizing Inside Job movie parties on Feb. 11 and 12. Can you host a party in Inwood next weekend?

I'll host a movie party!

Dear MoveOn member,

Have you ever been one fact away from getting your conservative uncle to agree that Wall Street has too much political influence? Or been oh-so-close to convincing your banker friend that Big Banks, in fact, cannot be trusted to regulate themselves?

Conversations like these aren't about scoring political points—they're about getting our friends and family to wake up to a crisis that's costing millions of Americans their homes, jobs, and retirement savings.

The 99% movement is gearing up for a big spring. To get a head start, MoveOn members around the country are throwing Inside Job movie parties on February 11 and 12. The Oscar-winning documentary shows exactly how Wall Street's risky behavior—and Washington's inaction—caused the global economic collapse.1

Movie parties are a fun way to connect socially with MoveOn members—and a smart way to learn about a key issue before upcoming local and national elections. We need a local MoveOn member to sign up to host a party in Inwood. Organizing a party is simple—and you'll have a step-by-step guide to help. Can you host a party in your community?

Yes! I can host an Inside Job movie party.

Understanding what Wall Street did to us doesn't require a degree in economics. In fact, millions of Americans can learn what happened in under two hours. Inside Job provides a straightforward explanation of what happened and who's responsible—and can bring more people into the 99% movement for economic change.

Whether you want to throw a private party for friends or meet up with other MoveOn members, hosting a party is a great way to meet progressives in your community and talk about how we can create change together. Can you host an Inside Job movie party on February 11 or 12? Click here for more information and to sign up:

Tied

Mitt Romney and President Obama are tied in the polls. So it's all going to come down to who defines the issues. If we can make 2012 all about the 99% vs. the 1%, Romney and the Republicans can't win. We're ready to get started, but we need to raise $175,000 this week to do it. Can you help?

Chip in $5
Dear MoveOn member,

Mitt Romney is on the verge of locking up the Republican nomination. And now we're in for an incredibly close race—Gallup's latest poll has Romney tied with President Obama.1

Romney's election plan is simple: Blame the president for the fact that people are suffering in a bad economy.2

And with hundreds of millions of dollars to spend, there's a good chance that it'll work—that he'll manage to make voters forget that Obama inherited the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

We don't have a super PAC full of deep-pocketed 1%-ers, but we do have people power that Romney and his Wall Street friends can't match. We've also got a comprehensive plan to make sure that the election's about one thing: who stands for the 99%

Already this year, we've seen people power beat big money on Internet censorship and investigating the housing crisis,3 but if we want to do the same in the election, we have to start now. That means raising $175,000 this week to hire staff and build the new technology we'll need to run hard-hitting ads, local events, polling, petitions, and more. Can you help?

Americans are fed up with politicians like Romney, who are only interested in protecting the 1%. They want more jobs, fair taxes, and economic policies that help all Americans.

So to drive home who's protecting the 1%, we've got a ton planned—from the presidential level all the way down to local races—including:
  • Organizing thousands of candidates for elected office, from local to federal, to declare their support for fair taxes—for the basic idea that Warren Buffett shouldn't pay a lower tax rate than his secretary
  • Events around the country to pressure Washington to make the wealthy pay their fair share
  • Rapid response ads highlighting Mitt Romney and the Republican Party's absolute commitment to the idea that the richest 1% should pay even less in taxes
  • Organizing millions of people through online actions to show strong public support for Obama's call for fair taxes
Every election has a story. In 2010, the story was about the rise of the tea party. In 2008, it was the amazing power of the Obama generation. And in 2006, it was the Democratic take-back of Congress.

In 2012, we can make this election about the poster boy for the 1% losing because Americans are sick of an economy that isn't working for them. But we need to get started right away. Will you chip in?

Thanks for all you do.
