I need help in Jamaica

On July 16 and 17 people in neighborhoods across the country are gathering to share our stories, express our hopes, hone our best ideas, and craft a plan for working together to fix our broken economy. There's a meeting in Jamaica. Can you make it?

Attend a Meeting
Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Van Jones, and last week, I joined with MoveOn to launch Rebuild the Dream. This big new project is dedicated to creating an economy that works for ALL of us—and to stopping the attacks on the middle class and working Americans.

Since we launched last week, the question folks keep asking me is: "Why are you talking about the American Dream? Didn't we all give up on that a long time ago?"

Sadly, they're right. Too many of us have stopped talking about our dreams—stopped thinking in terms of what we're really capable of achieving in this country. I believe that's actually part of the problem.

That's why I am so excited to invite you to take part in the next step in building the American Dream movement. On July 16 and 17 people in neighborhoods across the country are gathering at more than 900 American Dream house meetings to share our stories, express our hopes, hone our best ideas, and craft a plan for working together to fix our broken economy.

There's a meeting in Jamaica on Sunday, Jul. 17, 2011, at 6:30 PM. Can you join in?

Yes, I want to RSVP!

I promise it'll inspire you.

For me, the American Dream is something my dad instilled in me. He climbed out of poverty up the ladder of opportunity—then he put my sister and me through college.

As I've traveled around the country talking to thousands of people over the past year, it's become clear that we, as a country, are letting that ladder fall down. People have told me over and over that the American Dream is slipping further and further away for them and their families.

We need to stop reckless greed at the top from killing our dreams. That's the inspiration behind Rebuild the Dream.

Because the American Dream used to mean something in this country. That if you put in a hard day's work, you could expect good American wages, benefits, a dignified retirement, and a better life for your kids. Everyone wasn't in the middle class, but everyone believed that—given a fair shot—they could make it there. That's the American Dream I'm fighting for.

Our shared path to the American Dream begins with a conversation among concerned friends and neighbors at hundreds of American Dream house meetings on July 16 and 17. These simple house meetings will launch a grassroots agenda-creation process that we'll use to drive the American Dream movement forward.

Can you make it in Jamaica on Sunday, Jul. 17, 2011, at 6:30 PM?

Yes, I'll be there!

Thanks for all you do.

–Van Jones

It's not enough

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, President Obama announced his plan for Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, it means even more years of war. Even after the 33,000 "surge" troops come home by next summer, nearly 68,000 will remain—twice as many as when Obama took office.1 The full combat drawdown won't be complete until 2014.2

We simply can't afford to spend upwards of $100 billion a year fighting in Afghanistan3 while so many suffer here at home.

As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stated clearly: "It has been the hope of many in Congress and across the country that the full drawdown of U.S. forces would happen sooner than the president laid out—and we will continue to press for a better outcome."4

If you agree, then the President needs to hear your voice, along with those in Congress, pressing him to do more. Please call the White House and urge the president to bring all of our troops home by the end of next year.

The White House: (202) 456-1111

Then, click here to let us know what they said.

All our voices calling for an end to the war are making a difference. More and more Americans are against the war. And, in making this decision, the president defied the Pentagon, who wanted an even slower drawdown.5

But we need to keep the pressure on. President Obama needs to hear, on the heels of his national address to his fellow Americans, that he has to bring this war to a quicker end for the good of America.

MoveOn members had White House phones ringing off the hook on Thursday and Friday last week, right after the president's announcement. But we want the president to know that the pressure isn't going to let up after a few days. That's why we're asking a different group of members to call each day this week. Now, it's your turn to make the call.

Can you make the call and urge the president to bring all of our troops home by the end of next year?

Please call the White House: (202) 456-1111

Then, click here to let us know what they said.

The president said on Wednesday night that "it is time to focus on nation building here at home."6 He's right.

Thanks for all you do,

"Amazing and inspirational"

Last night, the launch of Rebuild the Dream shook up New York. If you missed it—this is your chance to catch all the highlights. If you saw it, this is your chance to send this "amazing and inspirational" video "across America" by sharing it with everyone you know.

Watch It Now
Dear MoveOn member,

"Amazing and inspirational."

"Van Jones makes sense. Stand up, stand up, America."

"This has GOT to be recorded and re-played across America on the internet...MOVING! MOTIVATING...INSPIRING!!!!"

That's what just a few people had to say about the spectacular launch event for Rebuild the Dream last night—an organization dedicated to the campaign to create an economy that works for ALL of us.

We were so excited about the reaction that staff worked all night so we could send you this highlights video—and "replay it across America." But we need your help for that last part.

If you watched last night, you know the impact this video can have. If you missed it, now's your chance to catch the highlights. Either way, can you do your part to "replay it across America?" Just click on the image below to watch and share!

Visionary leader Van Jones led the launch, which was equal parts tent revival and gripping story of where we are as a nation and how we turn things around.

It was just an amazing kickoff to Rebuild the Dream and a fantastic show of support for the American Dream Movement. So, what is the Movement?

It will be what you and hundreds of thousands of Americans make of it. As you watch the video, you'll have the chance to sign up to host a house meeting in July—to help shape the Contract for the American Dream.

That Contract will hold the principles and values that bind us together as progressives, and as neighbors and friends. So, get inspired by this video and then inspire others to action by sharing the story of the American Dream Movement online and in your homes.

Click here to be inspired by the exciting video highlights of the Rebuild the Dream launch and sign up to host an event in your home.

Thanks for all you do.

Inspired

Dear MoveOn member,

If you were able to watch tonight's Rebuild the Dream launch, then I imagine you're as inspired as I am right now.

Already there's been an incredible response from people around the country!

But knitting all of us together into a successful, visible movement to rebuild the American Dream takes money—for organizers to help spread the message locally, for programmers to build the infrastructure we can all use to share ideas and organize, and for staff to work with thousands of groups across the country.

We're on the cusp of something really big. This what we've been waiting for.

But we can only do it if everyone gives whatever they can to make it happen. Will you chip in $5 to help rebuild the American Dream?

Thanks for all you do.

We're seeing this everywhere

Dear MoveOn member,

Most of the things that spread fast on Facebook are pretty silly—videos of cats and the like. But recently, we noticed a new contender: a feisty political point that's spreading like wildfire.

We think there's a real opportunity for it to go viral and introduce millions of people to this cheeky, spot-on reframing of the economic crisis we're in. Can you help make that happen? Click here to share this message on Facebook today:

"An Inconvenient Truth" on steroids

Thursday night, the revolution will be live streamed. So get in on the launch of Rebuild the Dream on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. ET. It will be part tent revival and part concert, featuring the truth about our economy from inspirational leader Van Jones. Click here to RSVP and catch it online in HD.

RSVP Now
Dear MoveOn member,

This Thursday night at 8:15 ET, we're hosting a one-of-a-kind online event, and you're invited!

It's the launch of a new organization called Rebuild the Dream, which is dedicated to creating an economy that works for ALL of us and to stopping the attacks on the middle class and working Americans.

The launch event will be An Inconvenient Truth for our economy—on steroids. It's equal parts tent revival, dance party, and gripping story about what's happened to our economy and how we turn it around.

It will be led by green jobs visionary and former White House advisor Van Jones. And while he lays out the truth about our economy, hip-hop megastars The Roots and world-renowned visual artist and DJ Shepard Fairey will back him up with some amazing music. I've seen the rehearsals, and it's simply astounding.

We'd love to have you join us for the live stream, in HD. And because a mass movement requires mass bandwidth, please RSVP to let us know you'll be watching!

Click here to RSVP and make sure you're logged on and tuned in at 8:15 p.m. ET this Thursday.

Rebuild the Dream is an organization dedicated to building the American Dream movement—the answer to the question: Will we fight alone and lose, or will we stand together and win?

Young graduates and returning veterans who can't find a job shouldn't stand alone. Families losing their homes to the banks that they bailed out shouldn't stand alone. Seniors having their Medicare slashed and the poor and disabled having their Medicaid gutted shouldn't stand alone.

This is not a coalition—it's a movement of people standing together. It's a banner under which we can all be proud to march. It's a movement dedicated to the enduring values and principles that we share, not the election of any individual.

Those values and principles will be enshrined in a Contract for the American Dream, which we'll build together from the ground up. That starts in July with house meetings in every congressional district across the country.

And this Thursday night it all starts with the truth—live streamed into your home.

Click here to RSVP and make sure you're logged on and tuned in at 8:15 p.m. ET this Thursday.

Thanks for all you do,

–Justin, Peter, Marika, Stephen, and the rest of the team

P.S. Over the past several weeks we've been spreading the "we are being lied to" message with creative and confrontational on-the-ground action. It's taken off quickly and generated a lot of attention. Click here to see the video that's creating all the buzz.

How much more pain?

We can't wait for Washington. We need our own people-powered movement to rebuild the American Dream. It launches in days and comes to homes across America in a few short weeks—if you can help. Can you chip in $5 right away?

Contribute Now

Dear MoveOn member,

America's in a tough spot right now. So many people are hurting. Yet in Washington and our state capitols, the big debate is about how much more pain to inflict. How many teachers to fire. How many new tax breaks to give the rich.

It's pretty clear by now that we can't wait for Barack Obama, or the Democrats, to save us. But the one thing that might turn things around is an honest-to-God mass movement—something on the scale of the civil rights movement or the antiwar movement—built around a vision of an economy that works for all of us, not just the top 2%.

So today we're launching a $1 million fundraising drive for one of the biggest things we've ever tried—joining with dozens of other progressive organizations to lift up a new, grassroots movement to rescue the economy and bring the American Dream within reach for all Americans.

I can't promise you it'll work. But we have some good ideas and I know you'll have lots more. And with how bad things are going, we've got time to do something really big. Can you chip in to get this off the ground?

Yes, I can donate $5 to help rebuild the American Dream.

Here's how we'll start:

  • We can't will the fight to rebuild the American Dream until we unite around a clear, progressive economic vision. So in July we'll go from town to town and door to door to engage hundreds of thousands of people in a crowd-sourced process to build that vision from the ground up.
  • Then we need to go out and fight for that that vision—for new programs to create good jobs and rescue homeowners, for strengthening Medicare and Social Security instead of slashing them, for investment in green tech and infrastructure, for making sure corporations and the very rich pay their fair share so we can afford these things.
  • It'll require every ounce of energy and creativity we all have—so we'll build an "open source" campaign, with tactics and actions limited only by our imaginations. We'll use culture, art, direct action and mutual aid—and work simultaneously for change in our own neighborhoods and the national level.
  • We'll support the leadership of those on the front lines who can make the moral case for change: teachers like those who led the fight in Wisconsin, long-term unemployed folks, students graduating off a cliff without a prayer of finding a good job.
We know we can't do it alone, so in the last few weeks, we've been talking with organizations representing tens of millions of progressives about organizing together under the same banner. There's a ton of excitement—but we need the resources to get it going.

Can you chip in $5 to help launch this movement?

It's been said that "we are the ones we've been waiting for." Well, it's time to stop waiting. Let's launch something big enough to turn the country around.

Thanks for all you do.

Disgusting Fox race-baiting

Below is an email from our friends at ColorOfChange.org, who created a petition at SignOn.org that's getting a lot of attention and may interest you.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, Fox Business' Eric Bolling said that President Obama has a habit of having "hoodlum[s] in the hizzouse," referring to an official meeting the president had with an African head of state at the White House.

Bolling also said that President Obama was too busy "chugging forties" in Ireland to respond to the recent tornadoes in Missouri and more. These statements play off of racist stereotypes and are unacceptable.

Fox needs to either fire Bolling or admit that they accept his brand of stereotyping and race-baiting. Please join us in demanding that they do.

So we created a petition to Roger Ailes, Chairman of Fox Business Network on SignOn.org which says:

"Dear Fox Business Chairman Roger Ailes,

I was disgusted by Eric Bolling's assertion last week that by hosting an official meeting with President Ali Bongo of Gabon, President Obama had "a hoodlum in the hizzouse." The segment went on to use other language and stereotypes associated with Black Americans.

This is not Bolling's first offense. Late last month Bolling used your platform to allege that President Obama was too busy "chugging a few forties" during an official trip to Ireland to attend to Missouri's tornado victims. The president was already en route to Europe when the tornadoes hit. But factual considerations aside, Bolling's use of cultural stereotypes is blatant and far outside the realm of useful political commentary. Such speech only serves to play on race-based fears and divisions, and it's damaging to our communities. I'm offended that your network would be a party to this and broadcast such obvious race-baiting.

Fox Business and Fox News have a history of hiring and promoting personalities who disparage Black history, leaders and institutions. It's time for this pattern to stop and for you to repudiate the use of racist stereotypes and race-baiting in your networks' coverage. If you fire Bolling, it would be a step towards showing real accountability. Refusing will make it abundantly clear to the public and the media that stoking racial division is part of Fox's agenda.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]"

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:

Dear MoveOn member,

Next week we're launching a new campaign to rebuild the American Dream.

It's inspired by all the people, including you, who have turned out in unprecedented numbers this year to stand up and say "No" to right-wing attacks on the middle class.

We're kicking off the campaign with an event in New York City—streamed live nationwide—led by Van Jones. It will feature the Roots, artist/DJ Shepard Fairey, and other celebrity guests.

The only thing missing is you. We're looking for MoveOn members like you to help us launch the campaign. Can you submit a photo holding up an "I'm Rebuilding the American Dream" sign—to show the breadth of the emerging American Dream movement?

It's easy—just follow this link to print a sign and add your photo:

Medicare

Click here to sign your name:
"President Obama: If you stand up to the Republican hostage-takers and protect Medicare, we will have your back."

Sign the Petition!
Dear MoveOn member,

President Obama has to decide whether he's going to save Medicare—or whether Republicans will once again get their way by holding the economy hostage.

Democrats in Congress have already taken a strong stand against making any Medicare cuts, but so far the White House has been silent on whether it's willing to compromise with the Republicans' extreme demands.1

Let's send President Obama a message: if he stands up to the Republican hostage takers, we'll have his back.

Republicans have had a lot of success taking the economy hostage and demanding a conservative ideological ransom. And they're at it again—this time over the debt ceiling, which ensures the government doesn't default on its debt.

Normally, this vote is routine, but this time, Republicans are digging in their heels—refusing to vote for the debt ceiling increase—unless their plan to eliminate Medicare is passed.2

But the sand is shifting under the Republicans' feet. They lost in the recent New York special election, which was all about Medicare.3 And their Medicare destruction plan is bombing at the polls.4

The one thing Democrats could do right now to let the Republicans back in the game would be to agree to Medicare cuts. Not only would it betray all the people who rely on Medicare (and all of us who will in the future), it would neutralize any political advantage the Democrats have gained this past month.

Nancy Pelosi is standing strong in the House against any cuts to Medicare.5 But the only way to protect Medicare from Republican attacks is for President Obama to take Medicare cuts off the table during negotiations over raising the debt ceiling.

Can you tell President Obama you'll have his back if he stands strong and doesn't let the Republicans hold the economy hostage to force cuts to Medicare? Click here to sign:

Thanks for all you do.

25% more want to end the war

Dear MoveOn Member,

You, along with our friends and allies, have helped get us closer to bringing the war in Afghanistan to an end.

Just last week, the House voted on the McGovern-Jones Amendment, which called for an "accelerated transition" of our troops out of Afghanistan. This critical bellwether for where Congress stands on the war had thousands of you calling your representatives as it came to a vote.

While the Amendment was narrowly defeated (204 to 215), the votes it attracted, including those of 26 Republicans, exceeded everyone's expectations. It's hard to come so close to an unexpected victory, but the massive improvement (by 25%) over the 162 votes previously received for similar legislation was a victory in itself. It helped send a strong message.

Combined with petitions signed by over 250,000 people, President Obama is hearing that Americans, including many members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, want this long war brought to an end.

The President will get that message specifically from MoveOn members next week, when your petition is sent to him straight from Representative Chellie Pingree. Help get as many names on it as possible before then, by sharing it with people you know:

Click here to share the petition to bring our troops home.

This is right when the President is deciding how many troops to bring home in July, to honor his 2009 commitment for an "accelerated transition". And we need to keep pushing back against voices in the Pentagon who want to keep us in Afghanistan without any foreseeable end.

Our friends at Credo Action, Win Without War, Brave New Foundation, USAction, Democracy for America, and Campaign for America's Future, among others, all contributed to getting over 250,000 Americans on petitions to bring our troops home. We'll continue to work with these allies on ways to bring our troops home faster, accelerate the end of the war, and put a stop to its unacceptable drain on our resources.

But right now, you can help keep the momentum going by sharing your petition to the President with your social networks.

Recent studies show that you have the ability to influence 8,000 people or more (your friends, your friends' friends, and even your friends' friends' friends).1 That's why sharing is even more important than signing.

Click here to share your petition with the people you know (and the people they know).

Thank you for all that you do,

–Justin, Michael, Carrie, Tim, and the rest of the team

Breaking news from Wisconsin

Support from MoveOn members like you has created a remarkable opportunity, helping force recall elections of six tea party Republicans who led the crusade against teachers and public workers. We have just a few weeks to ramp up a huge get-out-the-vote effort and win. Now, we urgently need your help to close the deal and win this fight for good—can you chip in $5 right away?

Dear MoveOn member,

Breaking news—we've now got a chance to beat six Wisconsin Republicans facing recall elections after helping force through infamous legislation taking away bargaining rights from teachers and other public workers. If we win, that would end Gov. Scott Walker's right-wing crusade.

This election is a huge opportunity to turn the tide against tea party Republicans and their attacks on the middle class. But in a last-minute election like this, whoever can mobilize the most voters will win—so we've got to get to work.

We've got an ambitious plan to get thousands more voters to the polls in Wisconsin, taking the technology and organizing tools that we used to help elect Barack Obama and applying them for the first time ever to a state-level election.

MoveOn members contributed $1 million to the huge effort to force these recall elections, and worked tirelessly on the ground. "It's a huge victory that we succeeded in getting six recall elections, but now we need ALL MoveOn members around the country to help us actually win the races and unseat Walker's majority," says MoveOn member Steve Hughes of Madison.

But with just six weeks to go, we've got to raise $185,000 to get moving on this plan immediately.

Can you chip in $5 to help us mobilize voters to the polls in Wisconsin and stop the tea party Republicans in their tracks?

If we win, we may even be able to reverse the anti-collective-bargaining law: A judge blocked the law last week, but Gov. Walker may try to pass it again. If progressives win three seats in the state senate, we can stop it. Furthermore, Republican governors and state legislators across the country are watching what happens in Wisconsin very closely, as are party leaders in Washington, D.C.

Since special elections like these always have very low turnout, whichever side can get people to the polls will have the upper hand. So we've put together an aggressive plan to get thousands more Democrats to the polls in each of these districts. Here's just some of what we'll do:

  • Use our proven member-to-member calling system to mobilize thousands of MoveOn members in Wisconsin.
  • Test a half-dozen different ways of using mobile phones and other new technologies to mobilize voters and get progressives out to vote on Election Day.
  • Test an exciting new method for MoveOn members to most effectively find and persuade swing voters, using existing social networks.

The state election oversight board announced yesterday that all the recall elections filed against Republicans will proceed, while all the retaliatory recalls Republicans filed against Democrats are mired in allegations of signature fraud.

These recall elections of right-wing Republicans could send shock waves through the nation, and a clear message: Voters won't stand for the extreme Republican attempts to trample on workers' rights.

But to send that message, we need to win these elections. Can you contribute now to help get out the vote in Wisconsin?

Thanks for all you do.
