Call Rep. McCarthy: No Cuts to Social Security

Dear MoveOn member,

This week the national deficit commission will conclude its work and make its final recommendation. And it's not looking good.

The chairmen of the commission released a preliminary proposal that centers around deep cuts to Social Security.1 And news reports indicate the commission is still leaning strongly in this direction.

There are smart, progressive ways to tackle the deficit—-by growing the economy and making sure the richest 2% of Americans pay their fair share. But too many in Washington want to use the deficit as an excuse to cut Social Security and create more giveaways for the rich.

Congress will have to vote on any recommendation for it to become law, so it's critical that they know voters won't stand for cuts to vital programs like Social Security.

Can you call Rep. McCarthy right away? Tell her to reject any plan that cuts Social Security. Ask her to support real solutions—like ending Bush's millionaire tax bailout—to cut the deficit.

Here's where to call:

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Then, please report your call by clicking here:

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FHNY_04&cp_id=1494&id=25325-10220574-6UCdvCx&t=1

The deficit commission was supposed to come up with balanced solutions to cut the deficit. But instead, they're intent on slashing health care for seniors and veterans, and cutting Social Security benefits—including for current retirees. And all those cuts are used to pay for lower taxes for the rich. It's just plain wrong.

And not only is cutting Social Security horrible policy, it's terrible politics too. Poll after poll shows that voters strongly reject cutting Social Security to deal with the federal deficit and prefer measures that would ensure that the rich pay their fair share of taxes.2

The people who want to cut Social Security are spreading lots of myths meant to make you think there is a looming crisis. Well, it's not true—there is no Social Security crisis. The program's trust fund will have a $4.3 trillion surplus by 2023, and can pay all of its obligations for decades to come.3 Also, legally it can't contribute to the deficit—it only ever gives out benefits it can pay for.4

Please call Rep. McCarthy today and ask her to reject any plan that cuts Social Security.

Thanks for all you do.

New York's drinking water at risk

New York tap water is at risk from a dirty procedure called "fracking." Will you sign onto a petition urging the New York Assembly to pass the moratorium on fracking before they adjourn for the year?

Add your name
Dear MoveOn member,

New York state is famous for its clean, safe drinking water. But if we want to keep it that way, the next few days are crucial.

Big energy companies want to use a risky drilling process called hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," to extract natural gas from deep beneath New York. They plan to blast millions of gallons of liquid chemicals into the ground in order to get the gas out.

The EPA hasn't even determined whether fracking is safe, and there are reports from Pennsylvania and elsewhere that this drilling can contaminate water in nearby communities—even making tap water catch on fire!1 But drillers are lobbying hard to start fracking.

To stop them, we have to place a moratorium on fracking in New York right away.

We've got a real shot at it—thanks to citizen pressure, the NY State Senate already passed a moratorium bill this summer. But that can't become law unless the State Assembly also approves it at their final meeting of the year this Monday.

MoveOn and the Working Families Party are teaming up on an emergency petition telling the New York State Assembly to pass this fracking moratorium now, before they adjourn for the year. Will you join me in signing this emergency petition?

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=205348&id=25300-10220574-etNLLpx&t=2

The petition says: "The State Assembly needs to protect New York's water RIGHT NOW by passing the moratorium on hydraulic fracture gas drilling before the end of the year."

We're aiming to gather 50,000 signatures by Monday, when Working Families Party members will deliver the petition to Assembly leaders as they return to Albany for their final meeting of the year.

Clean water is such a fundamental need for every New Yorker, and we've fought hard to ensure that our water is safe and protected from pollution.

Out-of-control fracking could undo all of that—but if tens of thousands of New Yorkers speak out, our state leaders will have to listen and pass this moratorium.

Please click here to sign the Working Families Party/MoveOn petition telling New York legislators to fight fracking:

I want my president back

In the wake of the election, it's more crucial than ever that President Obama stand up for progressive change. But instead he's considering giving in to GOP demands for a tax bailout for the rich. We need the bold, progressive Obama we elected in 2008 back—and we've got to send him that message. Can you record a video of yourself today, urging President Obama to fight for what we all believe in?

Share your video
Dear MoveOn member,

Remember Barack Obama in 2008? The guy who refused to go along with a "dumb war" and said, "In the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope."

I miss that guy. Imagine if someone told you in 2008 that Barack Obama was actually thinking about signing legislation to extend the Bush tax giveaways for the rich.1 I wouldn't have believed it.

Now more than ever, we need the Barack Obama we elected in 2008—the smart, tough, hopeful progressive champion who inspired millions of us—to stand up and say "no" to a millionaire bailout.

Right now, with the change we all fought for hanging in the balance, President Obama needs to hear from those of us who supported him the most.

So we're asking MoveOn members nationwide to record a video message from the heart to tell President Obama to go to the mat to stop any extension of the millionaire tax giveaways—and to bring back the progressive fighter we all knew and supported in 2008.

Can you record and share a video message to President Obama today? Click here to get started:

http://pol.moveon.org/obamavideo/?id=25271-10220574-R90zWux&t=2

A personal appeal from so many of us who worked hard to elect President Obama will send a strong message. And to make sure the White House and millions of Americans hear it, we'll take the best videos and turn them into an ad that we'll air on national television.

Can you share a video message today? Just click here to get started:

Get secret money out of politics

Can you call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand? Tell them: "Secret corporate political spending hurts our democracy. Support passing the DISCLOSE Act before the end of the year."

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

We just witnessed an election bought and paid for by corporate front groups and secret donors, and we have exactly 63 days to do something about it.

A bill in the Senate would force the high rollers behind the millions in attack ads to come out of the shadows. If we know who they are we can hold them accountable for trying to buy elections for the Republicans who support their pro-Wall Street, pro-oil company agenda.

This is our last best chance to put some rules back into our election process before newly elected Republicans take office and kill any hope of campaign reform in January. We must start to put democracy back in the hands of the American people.

Can you call Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and say:

"Secret corporate political spending hurts our democracy. Support passing the DISCLOSE Act before the end of the year."

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

Earlier this year the DISCLOSE Act came up one vote short. Several Republicans have said they support the principle of transparency but didn't want it to take effect until after the election.

That means right now we have an opportunity to get that final vote—but we need to convince the Democrats to bring up the bill before the end of the year and put pressure on the potential Republican supporters to stand by their claims.

A coalition of organizations is backing a new push for the DISCLOSE Act launching today to support a final vote for this common-sense measure. By adding our voices today, we can help make sure the Senate seizes on the opportunity to hold corporations and CEOs accountable for their attempts to buy our elections.

Can you call today?

Dear MoveOn member,

Powerful organizing is long-term organizing.

Progress has never been easy. The election results were surely disappointing. But to win the changes we need in our country, we're going to have to keep working together for the long-term.

MoveOn Councils are groups of members who organize together not just during elections, but all the time. Councils hold actions like rallies and vigils, they meet regularly with their members of Congress, and also hold fun and social events like this past weekend's Potlucks for Progress.

Can you sign up with your local MoveOn Council to stay involved locally in the months to come? Click here to find a Council near you, or to start one if there isn't one in your area:

http://www.moveon.org/team?id=25187-10220574-hWDvAvx&t=3

MoveOn Councils are already hard at work planning to lead the way in the major fights aheadand to be a strong, independent voice to keep Congress and the president honest when lobbyists and corporations stand in the way of progress.

Since you came to a call party during the election season, you already know how much fun it is to take action as a group. MoveOn Councils are a great way to continue to build a progressive community where you live and socialize with like-minded folks while making an impact.

An inspirational movie

Make sure you see Fair Game, the important new film starring Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts and two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn.

Dear MoveOn member,

After the outcome of the mid-term elections, it's good to be reminded that one person CAN make a difference when they stand up for the truth.

This weekend, MoveOn members in the Inwood area have a special opportunity to be among the first to see Fair Game—an important new film about one couple's fight for justice against the Bush administration.

The headlines about what happened to former CIA operative Valerie Plame and former ambassador Joe Wilson are well known. After Joe Wilson debunked the key piece of evidence in the Bush administration's march to war in Iraq, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove decided to mount a media attack that made Joe Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, "fair game." They outed Plame's undercover status and jeopardized not only her life, but also the lives of her family and contacts in the field.

You can purchase advance tickets by clicking here:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=187179&id=25156-10220574-LBVCo2x&t=104

Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), Fair Game is the unknown story behind the headlines, illuminating Valerie and Joe's struggle for the truth in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity and opposition.

We've seen the film and want to share it with you all as we head into some tough fights in the next two years.

Check out what people are saying about the film...

"One of the best movies of the year. Naomi Watts gives one of the best performances of her career. Very powerful."—Richard Roeper, RichardRoeper.com1

".... globe-trotting and intelligent, serious and substantial, deliberately paced yet filled with mounting suspense...It's the rare movie that's not quite long enough."—Christy Lemire, Associated Press2

"4 Stars...the most riveting Washington thriller since All The President's Men."—Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star-Tribune3

Valerie and Joe fought back and never gave up. That's a message we know MoveOn members will feel deeply. We hope to see you at the theater.

Thank you for all you do.

The worst idea ever

Republicans want to extend the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% permanently—a millionaire bailout. Can you submit a reason—or five—explaining why this is a terrible idea? We'll use your submissions in a big multimedia campaign to stop this reckless move.

Dear MoveOn member,

The economy is in shambles. People everywhere are struggling to make ends meet. So naturally, Republicans are worried about the richest Americans.

They're looking to make Bush's tax cuts for the rich—which expire at the end of the year—permanent. The worst part is that some right-wing Democrats have already come out and agreed with the Republicans' reckless approach, and the White House has signaled that they're open to compromising on this issue.1

This has to be the worst idea since—well, ever. And to show just how bad an idea it is, we've decided to gather 1 million reasons why the millionaire tax bailout is a bad idea.

We'll use the ideas you submit in a multimedia campaign around the country, and stage a high-profile event to deliver them directly to Congress.  Can you contribute a reason—or five or 10—right now? They can be as simple and short—or creative—as you want. Click here:

http://pol.moveon.org/millionairebailout/?id=25114-10220574-WxhCvIx&t=3

Here are just some of the reasons that have come in through the site already:

"Because we need an economic policy that works for the other 98% of us, not just the top 2%"

"Because my sister needs her unemployment benefits in order to support two kids while she looks for a job."

"Because I'm clipping coupons to get through the weekend grocery run."

"Because I shouldn't have to pay more in taxes than millionaire hedge-fund managers."

The Bush tax cuts for the super rich aren't just bad policy, they are bad politics too. Voters consistently reject extending those giveaways in poll and after poll.2

And economists agree that the top 2%—the richest folks who the Republicans are going to bat for—don't spend this money, meaning this tax giveaway doesn't have any stimulative effect on the economy.3 But struggling families will spend it. They need relief now, and that will help our economy.

With Republicans committed to bailing out their rich, corporate friends to the tune of $700 billion at the expense of middle class families, it is essential that Democrats stand up.

Can you submit a few of your own reasons for why the millionaire bailout is a bad idea right away?

http://pol.moveon.org/millionairebailout/?id=25114-10220574-WxhCvIx&t=4

Still need a potluck host in Inwood

We're still looking for MoveOn members to host "Potlucks for Progress" in Inwood on Sunday, November 14. We'll share some home cooking and discuss how progressives can keep making progress on the big problems facing America. Can you host a potluck?

Host a potluck
Dear MoveOn member,

The election was rough, no question. But less than a week later, something pretty amazing is happening: MoveOn members around the country are picking themselves up and getting ready for the fights ahead.

In fact, more than 300 folks have stepped up to host "Potlucks for Progress" starting next Sunday!

We're going to get together, eat some delicious home cooking, and talk about how we can keep making progress on the big problems facing America—despite Republican obstructionists saying that their No. 1 priority is to make President Obama a one-term president.1

But we still need hosts in Inwood. Can you lend us your living room for some great food and conversation with progressives in the neighborhood?

Yes, I can host a potluck!

Hosting a potluck is really fun and easy. It's also a great opportunity to meet like-minded progressives in your area. All you have to do is provide the space, and we'll invite other members to attend.

Also, if Sunday is bad, you can set up an event on Monday the 15th or Tuesday the 16th. (Although Sunday is ideal, because at 7 p.m. Eastern Time—4 p.m. Pacific—we'll be having a live conference call with a special guest to be announced.)

With so many big problems facing America, we can't afford to stop making progress on the real issues, like rebuilding our economy, fighting back against corporate influence, and strengthening the progressive movement overall.

But after a tough election, we need to work together to figure out the path forward. And a lot of progressives could probably use some comfort food and friendly faces right about now.

Can you host a potluck in Inwood?

Yes, I can host a potluck!

Thanks for all you do.

Host a potluck in Inwood?

The election hurts, but we don't have time to mourn, especially with the Republicans promising "no compromises." So MoveOn members are holding "Potlucks for Progress" on Sunday, November 14 to discuss how we can get back on track—and eat. Can you host a potluck?

Host a potluck
Dear MoveOn member,

After an election like this one, there's only one thing to do: EAT!

Well, eat and figure out together how we're going to get our country back on track.

Republicans are promising "no compromise" on repealing health care reform and giving another big tax bailout to millionaires. We need to show President Obama that we want him to fight—and that we'll support him if he does.

So on Sunday, November 14, we're organizing "Potlucks for Progress" around the country to share some home cooking and figure out together what comes next.

Can you host a potluck? We want to make sure progressives in Inwood have a place to gather. Click the link if you can host:

Yes, I can host a potluck!

Hosting a potluck is super-easy and fun. All you have to do is provide the space and some plates and silverware to eat with, and we'll do all the recruitment to let people know the event is happening.

The best time to hold your potluck is at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (that's 4 p.m. Pacific Time), when we'll have a live conference call with a special guest (to be announced).

Lots of people need a breather after working day and night for weeks or months. But this is no time to let down our guard. The Republicans have already shown that they will do nothing but obstruct and attack. We need to show President Obama that if he fights back, progressives will stand behind him.

These potlucks will be the first important step to fight back and get America back on track. Can you host a potluck in Inwood?

Yes, I can host a potluck!

Thanks for all you do.

Thank you

Dear MoveOn member,

On behalf of the entire MoveOn team, I'm writing to thank you for all your hard work in this election.

We have so much to be proud of! Together, in just 30 days, we held over 1,600 Stop the Takeover call parties, made over 680,000 phone calls, and recruited tens of thousands of volunteers for key races across the country.

And in races like Michael Bennet's very narrow victory for the Colorado Senate seat—a big priority for our calling program—grassroots turnout made all the difference.

I'm sad, but I'm proud, and I hope you are too.

Already, we've been overwhelmed with feedback from MoveOn members who are ready to continue the fight—and so that's exactly what we're going to do in the weeks and months to come. I wanted to let you know about one great way you can stay involved and keep working with other MoveOn members.

MoveOn Megaphone is an ongoing national network of callers who call other MoveOn members at strategic moments to win elections, hold elected officials and corporations accountable, and mobilize the progressive movement to fight for change when it matters most.

As someone who attended a calling party this year, you know how powerful (and fun) calling other MoveOn members can be. Can you sign up to join MoveOn Megaphone to mobilize MoveOn members for the critical fights in the weeks and months ahead? Click here to sign up:

http://pol.moveon.org/actioncorps/callingcorps/signup.html?id=25037-10220574-uXXT.Kx&t=2

We'll be in touch soon, and thanks, so much, for all you've done and will continue to do.

The Election

Dear MoveOn member,

There's no sugarcoating it. The election results overall are devastating.

And already, pundits are telling Democrats they "overreached," and need to be less progressive.

Well, here's our take: Americans needed to see Democrats out there, every day, fighting tooth and nail for regular folks. But too often, on things like the AIG bonus scandal and the foreclosure crisis, they saw corporate lobbyists getting their way while people suffered.

Democrats made genuine and significant progress on issues like health care and Wall Street reform. But the Republicans, Fox, and corporate front groups systematically misled America about all of that. And then those same groups spent hundreds of millions to put Republicans over the top.

Progressive heroes like Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, and Tom Perriello stood up for everything we believe in. But they were swamped by voter frustration and corporate cash.

It sure makes the change we seek seem a long way off.

But when I'm tempted to throw up my hands and walk away, I think of folks like Steve Nathan, an amazing MoveOn volunteer leader in Pennsylvania. Since Steve got laid off months ago, he's been splitting his time between hunting for a job and helping organize hundreds of other MoveOn members.

Then, two weeks ago, Steve arrived home from four hours out knocking on the doors of Democratic voters to find a foreclosure notice taped to his own door. "I'm in shock and stunned," he wrote us in an email, apologizing for needing to cut back on his duties. But Steve didn't cut back—he's been out knocking on doors and coordinating volunteers almost every day since.

Just like thousands of other MoveOn members who tirelessly canvassed, held house parties, and made calls all year.

When I talked to Steve yesterday, he told me that, win or lose, house or no house, he's not stopping his work for change. "Doing that," he said, "would mean giving up all hope, and I'll never do that."

We can't either.

Because Steve's work—and your work—has made a difference. Now millions of people will get health care. Some of the worst Wall Street abuses have been reined in. Billions have been invested in clean energy.

We can't give up hope because our country is still hurting. And if corporate Republicans and tea partiers have their way, things will get a lot worse.

We can't stop fighting because we carry in our hearts a vision of Americans coming together to take care of each other and make our country work again. And if we don't fight for that vision, who will?

Today, we should all take a breath.

Tomorrow we need to get back to work.

Our country needs us still.

Thank you—for all you did this year to make change happen, and all you will do to keep up the fight.

9:45 a.m. update: volunteer numbers taking off

Hi there,

I'm writing from our Election Headquarters with an urgent Election Day update. I just got the morning numbers on our volunteer recruitment program in our 59 target races, and I wanted to share the good news.

The charts look great: Over the past four days, we recruited more volunteers in swing districts than we did the previous two weeks—combined. At our peak, we were signing up one new MoveOn member to volunteer every seven seconds. But we can't stop now—click here to recruit more volunteers.

This is exactly the sort of surge we were hoping to see in the final hours, and it's exactly what the Democrats need to win close races across the country.

But I'll be blunt: Though the national numbers look good, we're still short in a number of the most important races that will decide control of Congress.

This is Election Day. We've got to make up this gap in the next couple hours or Democrats in these key races won't have the volunteers they need to reach all their target voters. Please, do your part—click here to call MoveOn members in key races and sign them up to volunteer:

Yes, I'll make calls from home.

Thanks for all you do.

–Adam

P.S. Don't watch the election on ABC! They've lined up known liar and race-baiter Andrew Breitbart to do Election Night commentary. Remember him? He got African American USDA employee Shirley Sherrod fired with his highly edited video appearing to show her giving a racist speech—when the full video showed the opposite. Viewers depend on news for facts—Breitbart lies. Watch anyone but ABC on Election Night!
