A little cake and a balloon. Birthday song sung. Very touched. Can't believe they could wait there in that infernal heat. I started sweating the moment I sat down!
They tell me about how they tried to get the receptionist to call my desk, saying that it's my birthday, but she didn't co-operate, so they had no choice but to call my handphone. Lol.
Back to office with balloon hidden behind back. Vain attempt because balloon makes rattling sounds when moved. Colleagues question if I have a secret admirer. Boss asks, "Did you just bring back a balloon?"
I listen to the gurgling of all my efforts at maintaining a low profile going down the drain.
Luckily, the words "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" emblazoned on my first pressie for the day were out of sight. Until a couple of hours later, when my colleague started playing with it while briefing me about something. -_- Boss saw the words (incriminating evidence) when he started hitting my head with the balloon.
Me: Uh, yeah.
Colleague: Minus 400 points.
Me: Why must tell? Haha...I shy ma.
Boss asks me to go party. Yay, my birthday is on the same level as Chinese New Year's Eve!
Leaves slightly earlier than usual.
Exits lift. Takes off shoes. Determinedly avoids looking at the shoe rack, in case they forgot again this time.
Opens door.
5 very familiar people in my house who are not part of my family are sitting in my living room.
Two seconds of silence. Then, somebody realises that I'm home.
Me: Hi.
Soon, there's a feast laid out on the dining table, just like two years ago. Poor mum, always suffering for my birthday. Hehe.
Time to eat, time to eat.
Watches Just for Laughs on TV.
And then that wedding/funeral channel 8 show.
Present presentation time! But first, I am urged to change into my birthday clothes. Which you shall look out for in the photos to come.
First, the poster I'd shamelessly hinted for. [Me to Bell on Labour Day, the day when she was on a secret quest to find my shoe size: Don't you think my this wall is very empty?]
Two: banner I'd requested for
Three: red headphones
Four: boxlike object
Am urged to rip off wrapping (which, interestingly, are pages from a chinese newspaper with some woman's face on it).
Shoe box emerges. I nod my approval.
But wait - something's wrong. The shoe box is not the usual navy blue of Converse shoeboxes.
In fact, the box looks a tad smaller than the usual ones which contain footwear in my size.
Uh oh.
Also, box says Charles & Keith.
They say it's footwear that every woman needs. Nooooooo!
Loses it and starts grumbling. "I thought I wrote on my blog, NOT things you all think I should start wearing but things you really think I would like???"
Total spoilt brat moment reminiscent of Dudley Dursley ("Thirty four??! But last year, last year I had thirty-seven!).
With trepidation (thinking "What every woman needs, indeed! Well! I'm not every woman!"), I place my hand on the lid of the box. I'm just starting to notice that it's pretty heavy.
Flips open the lid.

Oh, joy!
Oh joy oh joy!!
These must be the prettiest shoes EVER!
Mum made marshmallow cake. Yum yum rub my tum. Friends love it too.
As I'm clearing the plates, Mum lets slip that we're going out after this.
Watches more TV.
At about 10 pm, we set off for part two of the celebration. Am very surprised to learn that Little Miss I-Turn-Into-Ashes-At-12-Midnight is joining us! Special approval from her mother. Oh my. I'm so honoured!
And so we had a cheap cheap ktv session. =) =) So what if the mics crackled and the sharks' fin wasn't nice? It's really the company that matters to me. And I still really really appreciate all the effort that was put in to make it happen.
Oh yes, I got a ????????????????? present from Ev.
Yep, go figure. Heehee. I still really appreciate the fact that he bothered, though.
And actually the best part of the present is in the wrapping paper itself:
I also received ang baos from my parents.
And the special happy formation my mum arranges my bedfellows in to cheer me up. The lovely sight greeted me when Seamus sent me home at 1.30 am and I was just about to climb into bed.
I took photos of my stash, read the card, felt a surge of emotion so 浓烈 that I teared, thought about loads of stuff before drifting off.
Basically, from the moment I fell asleep at 1 plus AM on 7 May 2010 after the post-serenade chat and small influx of messages to the moment I travelled to Lalaland at 3 AM on 8 May 2010, I was a happy, happy soul. =)
Date: 8 May 2010
Time: 1.05 pm
Venue: Somerset
Status: Sleepy but a little excited
Time to meet Becky, Jesslin and Mei Hui for lunch. I wanted to try T.G.I Friday's but after looking at the menu, I decided the prices were exorbitant and there wasn't anything I particularly wanted to eat anyway. So we moved on to this teppanyaki place in Ion.
They got me Everything is Illuminated and this really obscene card. Wahahaha. They know me well indeed.
After filling up our tum-tums, we shopped around for a bit and then went to Xin Wang for drinks. We had a really nice discussion about my strategy towards this cute guy at work. I would like to thank Mei Hui for not yawning and suggesting that we leave because she looked really bored after a while. Hahaha. =D
Went home at 5 pm, bummed around, caught 就想赖着你 and the first part of 我猜, had a three-hour chat, couldn't sleep because of the Yuan Yang I'd had at Xin Wang, did up a Mother's Day card, and went to sleep at 4.30 am.
Ah, t'was a gooooooooooood weekend indeed. =)
I feel as blessed as my 女王. I never thought I could have a birthday that's as brimming with love as hers...but you all really made me feel that mine is no less heartwarming in its own way.
So loved. So fortunate. Why do I even complain? I have wonderful, terrific friends who are willing to go through so much trouble just for my birthday. Efforts that might put some boyfriends to shame.
I see now that what I've been yearning for so fervently of late might actually have been all around me all this while.
Thank you all so, so much. Everything each of you did is exactly what I wanted. 我好像真的遇见幸福了. =)
