The date of my departure is hurtling towards me like an out-of-control reindeer with mad deer disease. The closer it approaches, the more I dig my heels in, reluctant. The more you try to grab hold of the sands of time, the faster it seeps through your fingers.
Ah, but go I must, and when I'm back, I'll be better, my soul more evolved, to be a better loved one to all.
Christmas was the curious blend of relaxation and addictive enjoyment that is the Tous.
Met up with Florence and Candy on Christmas Eve. Had loads of fun insulting each other and exchanging gifts. Almost forgot about these girls' unique sense of humour and infectious interest in things that I always label "a waste of money".
Meeting Bee and KC tonight. Bound to a be a blast, can't wait :D
Other people may be of the opinion that music videos are just there to provide interesting visuals to accompany your singing (I mean, they can't just write down all the lyrics on a black background, that'd be too dull), but I am someone who pays attention to the storyline and presentation of MVs. Sometimes I even like to analyse them like I would for movies.
Today I came across two MVs that really made me scratch my head.
1. 丢架 - Twins
Unless my eyesight fails me, the words in the opening scene say something like: I will post the story of my breakup to 100 strangers.
Which is quite nifty and novel as such sad stories go, so it's a good start. But it gets somewhat confusing.
Both the Twins are seen to be writing letters, all fine and understandable. But then Gillian (there's a snazzy hairstyle, by the way) proceeds to post her letters into Charlene's house!
So is it that both of them had the same idea about posting the letters to strangers, but then ended up receiving each others' letters? But how come all the letters ended up in Charlene's house? Maybe Charlene lives/works at the post office. Don't laugh, I'm sure the red walls are trying to tell us something.
Before you declare me a weirdo, I don't analyse every MV like this. And I certainly wouldn't bother with this one if the song wasn't so touching, and the opening line so intriguing.
P.S I do understand how some MVs are made without much thought and really just cater to people who need to look at something (besides a black screen) behind their lyrics while they sing. But these two don't look like they fall into this category.
2. 兄妹 - Eason Chan
Here's the second one. For this one, I have come up with 3 possibilities:
1. The two girls are a couple, but one of them is bi and likes Eason. Or both of them are bi and like Eason but he only reciprocates one. But they can't be together because she already has a girlfriend.
2. The two girls are best friends/sisters, and one of them is holding out and not taking it one step further with Eason because her friend/sister likes him too.
3. Eason likes one of them, but she doesn't reciprocate and prefers the girlfriend.
Which one could it be?
I think it is more likely that the girls are a couple because of the scene in the bathroom (they were playing rather intimately). But if one of them is bi it is too confusing and, I feel, too much trouble for an MV. Also, it is too much to ask of the viewer to know that she is bi. And, if she is with her partner, how come she slept with Eason (the empty pillow beside him when he wakes up) and not her partner?
Anyway, after examining the comments I discovered that there is a sequel to this MV (below), which may shed some light on this one. Didn't do much for me, but maybe it'll help you help me. Haha.
十年 - Eason Chan
Aiyah so confusing. I should just shut my brain up and sing next time.
Never say never. Never say best. Never say always. Never say sure. Never say love. Never say forever.
Because flux is the only constant.
But we all need something to hold on to, pieces of driftwood in the massive ocean to anchor us, give us a sense of security, keep us from spiralling downward into the watery grave of uncertainty and doubt. So we are sure to be forever saying "never" because we just love this word and think it's always the best way to express our ultimate conviction (which might change the very next second).
And besides, it's too much of a mouthful and less impactful (therefore less gratifying) to say "i will never love again, but it's just my humble opinion and the forces of the universe can conspire to prove me wrong"; "best so far up till the last split-second of my life, just before I instructed my brain to say this"; "always, except for a few anomalies, mere exceptions if you ask me"; "i am 99.9% sure at this point in time"; "love you right this minute"; "i can see myself doing this forever but of course although it seems totally unlikely now, i do know that anything can happen but right now I can see myself doing this forever".
