reflection on medan trip

Reflection on Medan Trip

The trip was enjoyable and fruitful. It was a learning journey for me and many of those who went along. My experiences ans observations in Medan, Indonesia changed something in me. Perhaps, my perception of life.

Though the trip was supposed to be 5days 4 nights, it ended abruptly on the second day. The news was rather surprising and at the same time, disappointing. We were enjoying ourselves fooling around, visiting places and making friends. Amid the chaotic situations in Indonesia, it was decided that our safety should not be compromised and that we should return to Singapore promptly.

I had witness the social disorder myself. On the first day(Friday), when we checked-in our hotel, there was apparently a demonstration on the streets. It was a way in which the Indonesians express their thoughts; they were practising freedom of speech. Their actions can lead to economic downturn as shops cease to operate and tourists might aviod going to Indonesia. The demonstrations are, of course, not for no reason. It was due to the oil hike( prices of oil increased to over 180%) which can be a burden to the less well-off. The demonstrations were an eye-opener for me. Such practice is absent in Singapore and seeing them waving the Indonesian flag and protesting with their banners set my thoughts going. I learnt that we should not take things for granted. Peace should be preserved.
The visit to Disabled school made me realise how fortunate I am. In this world, there are people born with physical or mental defects. Very often, they are neglected by the society and left to fight for their survival. As the person-in-charge said (translated by Herman, our "tour guide"), "Our aim is not to have them graduate with a degree, but to let them gain a skill which can enable them to earn a livelihood." While some of us aim to rank high in status in the society, others are satisfied with just a simple lifestyle. How important is wealth and fame?

The truth is, I sympathise with the less fortunate and wish to help them. In contrast with the kids, Singaporeans do not suffer their fate. Even on foreign land, we were warmly received by Madam Minah, a generous friend of our principal, Mr Koh. She treated us lunch which was fantastic and overwhelming. We did not expect a 20-course feast as lunch! We sat as a group, together with our teacher-in-charge, Ms Leo. We were trying hard to finish the food and even started a little game to do so. Ms Leo also played along and our group eventually glued together. I would like to thank the teachers who broke the ice for us all. We established valuable friendships which add meaning to our lives.

Stepping out of the posh restaurant, I felt myself being in another world, a world where reality lies and poverty exists. Our next destination was the orphanage, a long bus ride from the restaurant.

Here are a few of my observations:
- Rubbish was simply everywhere. There were clutters of them near households.
- The traffic wasn't smooth. There were traffic jams, especially with the demonstrations. The bus ride was bumpy. The traffic lights was quite pathetic. I thought it is unlikely to serve any purpose as it as not prominent at all, tanding less than 3metres from the ground. I even pondered on whether it was functioning properly.
- At the beach, we saw a sewage pipe leading directly to the sea. The toilets do not have flush and water seemed to have some odour.
- I also saw how the locals earn their livelihood. There were street hawkers and children as beggars. Their "stalls" were small and looked weathered. A particular sight would stick with me forever, i guess. A kid, about 5 to 7 years old, was carrying a baby and begging for money. I was later told that some people actually rented babies for such purposes. It was a matter of survival. Regardless of what means they resort to, only the fittest survive.

I began to appreciate Singapore: the waste disposal system, the transport system, the sewage system, the economic prosperity, etc.

When we finally reached the orphanage, we had a glimpse of their room and interacted with the kids. There was 3 triple decker beds in a small room! I figured that the person sleeping on top can hardly move. If i was put into that situation, would I ever be happy? I doubt so. The kids, however, proved me wrong. They showed me that happiness can be simple. The moment we gave them goodies, smiles appeared on their faces. It was heartening to see them cheerful and I was compelled into playing with them. Although language was a barrier, we managed to teach them a few songs, making a fool out of ourselves in the process. Time always pass quickly when we are having fun. The visit ended with a photo-taking session which fascinated them while we clicked away. We wished to linger longer but we had to move on. I think they felt our concern and hope that they would view life with more optimism.

The beach program was free program. Our group strayed away and went exploring the land. We posed for photos, poked fun at each other, chased each other around, saw the wonders of nature and ultimately, enjoyed and relaxed. I felt alive. We got to know each other better and bonds between us strengthened. Before long, it was time for dinner and we had to go back unwillingly. Back in the dining area, we celebrated ShiWei's birthday, united as one.

When night falls, we headed back to the hotel. The sky was beautiful with bright twinkling stars. There was no electric supply and homes were lit up by oil lamps. It was something city dwellers seldom experience. On the way back, I decided to treasure the comfort we are in.

Our team spirit shone through overnight. We practised dancing outside the lift area. It was a little embarrassing to have questioning stares casted on us but it was all worth it. Our performance on Saturday was much better than on Friday. On the ride to Dr Wahidin school, we practised singing even though it was still early. From being unco-ordinated, we improved. During the basketball match, we cheered together and brought our fighting spirit out. The players pushed on despite being exhausted. Cheers for them!

There was a turn of events and we had to return to Singapore. We entered the hotel by the back door and evacuated from the hotel within 15minutes. The scenerio was saddening; our journey was ending. Yet, memories will still stay- the good and the bad. I believe the lessons learnt in the short trip are fulfilling.
