Today it is raining. Like a lot. It seems like it hasn't stopped since early this morning. It also rained a lot yesterday and last night. As a result, our basement kind of flooded. I hate to use the word 'flooded' because we didn't have standing water, but in the guest bedroom downstairs the carpet was wet enough that when you stood on it the water would start pool up around your foot. It's really our fault for a) not even thinking that all this rain and no rain gutter would impact our basement and b) for not just paying the money to put rain gutters on the house this spring like we wanted to. We had 2 companies come out and give us a bid. We were a little shocked. I guess rain gutters are more than either of us thought. We need them around the whole house, but especially in the front. So we should have just had them installed on the front of the house. But we didn't. Lesson learned. Luckily Henry wanted to go out and play in the rain at 9:30 this morning and as soon as I looked over at our window well and saw it FULL of water, I ran (as fast as a pregnant girl can 'run') downstairs and sure enough the carpet was wet! I called Clark at work and then got the shop vac and started sucking! Then Clark came home and actually did something productive by getting all that water out of the window well so it would stop coming into our house. He tore up the carpet and the pad was pretty wet in the guest bedroom so he ripped part of it out and we have fans going. I'm grateful it wasn't worse and that Clark could come home from work for 3 hours to temporarily fix the problem. Nothing a little (or a lot) of ply wood can't fix. Our house is looking ghetto fabulous right now!
Wet carpet pad. This picture doesn't make it seem bad, but it was pretty wet. That wall has a little bit of damage where the paint bubbled up. Luckily in the spring we will be adding nice big egress windows on that wall so it won't matter.
We also created a place for water to pool up by adding the wood around the flower bed. D'oh!
This is how the front of our house looks. So awesome. But you gotta do what you gotta do, right?!
Okay so now onto the bathroom remodel...
^^ This was the "Before" picture we took when we first had the keys and stepped foot into the house after buying it.
I think I took this one during the summer while we were remodeling.
^^ Ignore my lovely reflection in the mirror. This was also taken last summer during the remodel. Notice the lovely mirror, gold towel rod, wood outlet cover and the gold and brushed nickel sink fixture. You can't tell from this picture, but it did have gold on it. This house was seriously so random.
^^ This is after we had moved in (September 2013). We got a new door and that was it. Besides me scrubbing it down before we moved in, we didn't touch it.
^^ This was just about a month ago (end of June 2014) after we painted it the same color as the rest of our house and painted the vanity. We actually used the same green paint we used on our shutters outside. We are getting a lot of use out of that gallon of paint! As my Grandpa Emmet always said "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without". We also got a new light fixture and mirror. We had new fixtures for the sink and tub, but at this point Clark hadn't installed them yet.
^^Clark installed the new tub and sink fixtures and then he started on the floor. I think I helped him peel up 2 tiles before I couldn't breathe and my back hurt. Those things were stuck down tight. And my pregnant belly wasn't letting me help.
^^ We bought "peel and stick" tiles from Home Depot and they are seriously the best. We bought the ones that you can grout in between to make them look more like real tile. Obviously they don't feel like real tile, but they look and feel a lot better than those old vinyl/plastic looking ones. We were very impressed with the outcome.
^^ Here is an unclose of the tile and the trim. We still need to fill the nail holes and add another coat of paint after we fill them. Clark will also silicone the top where the trim meets the wall for a nice clean look.
^^ New tub fixtures. I wish I had a picture of the old stuff. It was gross and a really weird color. Like rusty metal. We really wish the tub was white, but at least its clean. And the tile is fairly new too so it's fine, although its not our first choice.
^^ We also wish the sink was white. Oh well. I love the new mirror and I think it makes the bathroom feel so much bigger. Much better than the ugly mirror/medicine cabinet that was there before. Clark doesn't love the light fixture, but it was on clearance so I bought it. I like it enough for a kid/guest bathroom.
^^ Our old brown/cream/and gray shower curtain just didn't look right in the bathroom so we went with Navy and white (thanks to Target and the Cartwheel app I got that baby for a pretty good deal). I think it looks better with the green vanity and 'greige' wall color. We don't love the tile counter top and obviously the sink and tub, but I really think this bathroom turned out really nice considering. Now I just need to find something cute to hang above the toilet. And Clark says we need white rugs instead of cream... He is probably right but they will do for now!
