CURRICÁN: SPANISH MACKEREL // TROLLING: SPANISH MACKEREL

El curricán no es una modalidad que me hubiese llamado nunca demasiado la atención, seguramente por la ausencia de grandes pelágicos en Galicia, donde he vivido y pescado casi toda mi vida, y donde a penas se practica.

I´ve never been too much interested in trolling as mode of fishing, surely due to the absence of big pelagics in Galicia, where I´ve lived and fished almost all my life until now, and where this fishing style is not used.

Hasta mi llegada a Australia sólo había practicado este tipo de pesca en típicos viajes y charters en los que te dan todo hecho y tú, si hay suerte, solo has de pelear la pieza con un equipo que desconoces y que no satisface la idea que solemos tener de lo que es pescar, los que asiduamente lo hacemos.

Until I arrived to Australia I had only practiced this mode in fishing charters or trips where they give you all done and likely just you have to fight the fish with a tackle that you don´t know and make you feel that is not your idea about fishing.



Por suerte, aquí puedo aprender y empezar de cero a comprender esta modalidad tan atractiva como cualquiera, por supuesto, con sus puntos positivos y negativos. Entre lo que menos me gusta es el uso de equipos tan pesados como necesarios, y carretes que en mi vida había intentado comprender, con la manivela  a la derecha y en los que tú tienes que ayudar a guiar el hilo y, unas cañas que son auténticos palos con las anillas del revés. Como veis hablo como un completo ignorante, pues es lo que soy. Por otra parte, me está gustando aprender cosas nuevas en cada salida de pesca, y el manejo de estas escavadoras que poco tienen que ver con un carrete de spinning, y de la mano de todo un experto como es mi amigo Jason. Otro aspecto muy interesante de esta pesca es que te centras solo en grandes depredadores y que te permite conseguir piezas excepcionales, dificilmente pescables a spinning por ejemplo.

Fortunately, here i can learn and start to understand this modality as interesting as any other, obviously with its goods and bads. What I like the less is using this big equipment which is both heavy and necessary. Reels with the handle in the right hand and rods with rings facing to you! As you can see i am speaking as a completely ignorant, so i am. On the other hand, i enjoy learning many new things in each fishing trip with an expert like Jason is, such as the use of these "bulldozers"reels, very different from the spinning reels for example. Other good point is targeting only big species and this fishing allows you to catch huge fish which would be hardly catched with other type of fishing.

Esta salida no pintaba muy bien, pues habíamos estado dando vueltas alrededor de la zona en la que más confiaba Jason durante toda la mañana, y tan solo habíamos capturado alguna pequeña albacora, pero ni rastro de los mackerel y los petos que era lo que realmente estábamos buscando. Ya de vuelta a puerto, con mucho calor y ya pocas embarcaciones en el mar, hablamos de ir a probar a otro punto caliente. no teníamos muchas esperanzas visto el resultado hasta el momento pero, ya que la previsión decía que no habría más pesca en un par de semanas, decidimos gastar el último cartucho... y BINGO!!

This fishing trip wasn't looking good, because we had been running around the area that Jason trusted in during all the morning, and we had only a couple of mack tunas in our score. Coming back to home, we decided to try in another spot, just in case, because we knew that there would be more fishing days in the next two weeks and... BINGO!!

Odio usar bajos de acero pero estos dientes... // I hate using steel leader but these teeth...

Y una última pregunta, sabe alguién por qué a estos peces les llaman españoles??? Porque no he visto ninguno por España jaja

And one last question: does anyone know why this fish is called spanish??? I´ve never seen one in Spain jaja

MUCHA POTENCIA EN UN ENVASE MUY PEQUEÑO // PLENTY OF POWER IN A VERY SMALL PACKAGE

La potencia y resistencia de este pez son incomparables. No hay más que ver las carreras y la lucha que puede dar una simple rata de un par de kilos, que te hace pensar que traes algo mucho mayor hasta que lo ves. Diversión, beso y al agua.

Power and endurance of this fish are incomparable. Just looking at the runs and fight of this rat size with a couple of kilos, that makes you think that you have a much better fish. Fun, kiss and release.

PRIMER DÍA EN KAYAK. CORVINA CON VINILO // FIRST DAY ON THE KAYAK. JEWFISH WITH SOFT PLASTIC

No podía perder la ocasión de hacerme con un kayak viviendo donde vivo ahora, y eso he hecho. Es un rápido ocean kayak scupper pro, con timón, y motor electrico facilmente desmontable para los días más tranquilos y que sea necesario hacer grandes distancias.

I couldn´t lose the opportunity to get a kayak, living where I am living now. It´s a fast scupper pro, with rudder and removable electric motor for the calmest days.

Para estrenarlo escogí una zona tranquila en el canal principal de entrada de Gold Coast, en lo que sería una jornada corta de madrugada. Fue un día de muy poca actividad y repleto de delfines, y no vi sacar ningún pez a ninguna embarcación. Por mi parte tuve la suerte de engañar a esta corvina con un pequeño vinilo justo en la punta de un espigón.

I chose a quite place at the Gold Coast seaway for the first use in a short trip in the early morning. It was a day with little fish activity and with dolphins everywhere. I ´ve seen nobody catching any fish from other boats and I´ve managed to fool just to a jewfish at the end of the north wall.

ROBALO 7KG, RECUERDO DEL VERANO PASADO // 7KG SEABASS, LAST SUMMER's MEMORY

Echando un vistazo a los vídeos del ordenador, he encontrado este bonito recuerdo que por unas cosas o por otras aún no había subido. 

Having a look to the laptop videos, I´ve just found this nice memory which I haven´t upload yet for any reason.

Fue a mediados de agosto del año pasado, si no recuerdo mal, en compañía de David (spinningdesdeelpedrero.blogspot.com), pero esta vez en la lancha de mi hermano. El día era espectacular para estar en el mar, pero muy aburrido hasta la gran picada sobre la 1 del mediodía. Recuerdo estar usando un 0,28-0,30mm de bajo, ya que las condiciones del mar y la ausencia de picadas nos obligaron a pescar lo más fino posible, y fue la clave del éxito. Además nos permitimos el lujo de grabar parte de la pelea debajo del agua.

It was last August, if I am remembering well, with David but from my brother's boat in this occasion. The day conditions were awesome to be out on the water, but the day had been very bored till the big strike over 1pm.  I remember to be using a 0.28-0.30mm leader, due to the sea conditions and absence of strikes. And it was a key to success. Also, we could film the underwater fight.

Gracias a David tengo las imágenes ya que, como tantas otras veces, mi cámara se había quedado en la mesilla jaja. 

Thanks to David, I have the film, because my camera had been left on my bedside table as too many times.

El verano que viene echaré de menos días como este, y porque no, un poco a las lubinas también jaja. Saludos!!
