987RADIOSTAR

I don't usually post about my days here but for this, I think I can.
(I wanted to post on Facebook but decided against it because it was gonna be lengthy lol)

As you all know, I auditioned for 987RADIOSTAR the past Saturday. It was probably one of the most impromptu decisions I've ever made and when I found out about it on Twitter, I decided, 'Hey, why not give it a try?', after all, I have been wanting to have a feel of what being a DJ is like.

(About to start on a story about what happened that day, so bear with me!)
So that day after work, my mum took me to Mediacorp studios and wished me all the best as she dropped me off. I registered, took a polaroid photo for identification and got myself a script to read off for the first round of audition. So I sat there, at the reception with other contestants and practiced my script as I waited. I haven't done a lot of proper English speaking since I entered poly, so I was nervous. I didn't want my Malay accent to appear all of a sudden so I made sure nothing like that would happen. I was also afraid that it would've been a wasted trip because I was planning to leave for Pitbull's concert (which I accidentally/by chance won tickets for) later that evening, so I was really really hoping I get called in as soon as possible.

When they finally called my name, I thought 'Yes! Finally, so sooooooon!' but they just put us in the holding room for another half an hour or so, accompanied with cans of Red Bull by the way. For the first time in a long time, I actually felt comfortable around a bunch of strangers. There was no awkwardness feeling at all and I got to join the chatter with the group of people in the holding room. Everyone's English was really good though, and they had a sense of humor and very dramatic, so maybe that's why I felt like I was 'home'. Then one by one, they left the holding room and it came to my turn almost so quickly. I reran my script again and told myself to calm down and try to build up my confidence.

Then I went into the room and after saying hello to the judges, Rozz & Bobby Tonelli, I accidentally hit the standee when I opened the door and went 'Oh mak.' and Rozz heard it and completed it for me with 'kau!', hahahaha that was so random. Then I sat down at the chair in front of them and when Bobby gave me the green light, I read my script.

The first mistake I did was to memorize the script. I wasn't supposed to because the judges said that this is radio, no one cares whether or not you memorized the script. So they told me to calm down and read again, this time, using the script. They also said they weren't gonna look at me because again, no one looks at you when you're speaking on radio. I carried on with my second try and they were pretty unsure. I could tell that they liked me and disliked me. Then Bobby told me that I stumbled on some parts of the script and then he had that thinking face on and so did Rozz and Bobby continued, saying that if they put me through to the next round, I had to make sure that I do not stumble on my words and phrases and that I would do better. And of course, I said yes, okay, and they gave me the ... PINK ticket! ;)

The next round was the on-air audition, where I get to be live on 987fm (& 987TV) and showcase my DJ skills. I was led to the next holding room where was greeted by Jeremy Ratnam and a chaotic chatter about soccer. Jeremy asked for my name and he was like "Like K-I-double S?" and I said, no and spelled my name out and this other guy that I sat next to (without realizing) was like "WOW Q? I CAN MAKE USE OF MY Q IN SCRABBLE NOW! THAT LETTER'S WORTH LIKE 10 POINTS MAN!" Well now I know what my name is good for. So I laughed and took a seat and they continued talking about Liverpool and Man Utd and I just subtlely slipped in a "I'm a Liverpool fan...." and Jeremy got excited and stuff. That holding room was just as fun as the previous one. Then he let me know what I was supposed to prepare in that room. I was tasked to write my own script as if I'll be on air. I had to backsell a song, introduce myself and tell a short juicy news (I picked 'Dantana' for that!). When I was done, I ran through it once with Jeremy and he told me it was good, that my script was short and straight to the point and he liked how I linked the story to the next song that I introduced so I felt pretty confident with it. He told me I was ready and so was the other girl, Victoria.

We were taken to the radio conti and since there were still two other contestants in the conti with the judges and the Double Ds, we both waited outside and shook our nerves off as we ran through our script again and again. Then we were welcomed into the conti and Divian was super sweet! We sat at the sofa and waited and Divian chose Victoria to go first so she did. Then I went after her and as Divian read through my registration form, he noticed I enjoyed paintball and asked me about it and I told them I play paintball as a CCA in SP and they were so excited about it, I don't even know why, but they were. When we went on air, I introduced myself and Divian asked about paintball and stuff and I managed to wow them with the usual 'Can't spell paintball without pain' phrase. Hahaha, they were so shocked to realize that and got excited again. Then I read out my talk set, and THANK GOD I DIDN'T STUMBLE ON ANYTHING. So one of the judges apparently was the boss of Mediacorp radio or something and the other was last year's winner, Sonia. The lady boss told me I was really quirky, fun, cute and had a great personality but the only problem was my diction and she told me that that could be fixed next time. I noticed I might have slurred some words actually, but idk, I was just trying out anyway. If I get through to the next round, then great! But if I don't, it's okay! I can try again next year maybe? ;) So before I left the conti, I took pics with some of them. I didn't take with Dee Kosh and Rozz though.

Sonia, last year's winner.

Bobby Tonelli.

And this is Nic! He's like the social media guru. He's also pretty cool!

And on my way out, I met the Muttons!
So that pretty much summed up my Saturday.
OH and I decided to forfeit my free tickets to Pitbull because I didn't want to rush over to Expo after the auditions. I didn't regret that decision though! ;)

Now to wait till the results of the Top 8.
(Top 8 is very very little people, wow.)

I said I hope to bring good news to this blog right?
HERE IT IS.
I'm happily typing this post after a long time of sadness.
