Feeling out of sorts...

Natalie is a senior, Lolly is a sophomore, Bones is in 6th grade, and Danny is in third. Everybody started school today. I feel sad. I don't feel like cleaning. But what else should I really do? I want to clean out the garage since the ugly white dumpsters are parked in our neighborhood but my knee can't take that kind of work quite yet. I don't want to do laundry. But I do want my kids to wear underwear beneath their clothes so I guess I have no choice. I want a Route 44 Diet Cherry Coke from Sonic but I'm laying off the brown stuff as much as possible. Notice I did not say "I'm off soda"...I know my limits!

This morning Danny left me in the school yard to run and play with his friends. That is what is really bugging me. He usually stays glued to my side and we stand at his line up spot until the bell rings. He is no longer shy. This is what we wanted! But it was sad today. As he ran off I called out a quick goodbye and a few other things and then started for the van. After a few half hearted steps I felt a hug from behind and there he was, my baby, Handsome Dan, wanting another hug and kiss goodbye plus a few extra air kisses into his cupped hands to put into his pocket for later. Then he was off and didn't even look back. I was done! Without being dramatic I walked fake happily to the van and even faked my way through a few hellos to other folks as I made my way. For the first time in the history of "first days" I wasn't staying until the bell! What else could I do? I drove the van around the side of the church parking lot that parallels the school playground, I watched my baby boy play happily with his friends, and cried!

Well that is that and another milestone has been met. Next year I will have one in college, one in highschool, one in junior high, and one in elementary, and, I'm sure, life will go on. Im excited for our children and all they are experiencing, who they are becoming, and the wonderful choices they are making. I just didn't plan on it hurting so bad.

Well, the underwear awaits...

I love Bon Jovi!

It had to be said! Oh, and this post is a little therapeutic rambling of sorts . Consider yourself warned. . . I'm doing really well. The blisters drained Monday and Tuesday morning and those were two very painful days. But the healing really started Tuesday afternoon and by Thursday morning you wouldn't believe the amount of healing that had taken place. Derek took me to get my hair cut Tuesday and you wouldn't believe the amount of hair still on my head if you saw the amount of hair on Barbara's floor!! It was so very uncomfortable to sit in the chair but it was SO worth it. She did awesome and I love it. I just let her do what she wants and I've always been thrilled with the outcome. Not to mention, my head is so much lighter on my poor neck! Thanks Barb. The kids had Parent Teacher Conferences last week and this week. Poor Der has had to attend all by himself. But the kids did awesome!!! Everyone has straight A's and Laurel even pulled an A+!!! This was a fun day today. The kids were off school so Brady had Zack over and Danny had Lainee. I miss my Lainee and it was so great to have her here! Laurel and Danny picked 80 more tomatoes and 10 more peppers so my mom ran to the store for me and got onions and jalapenos and Laurel sliced veggies for 2 1/2 hours straight! What a love! We ended up with 18 more quarts of salsa. YUM!! It feels so good to see the food storage shelves filling back up. We are expanding our garden again this year because we'd like to double our tomato crop. My goal is to eventually be able to can 75 quarts of tomatoes and 75 quarts of salsa each season. This year we will end up with about 60 quarts of salsa only. Once the salsa was cooking Lolly headed over to Kylie's house for a movie night and Natty headed over to Shannon's to do the same. I can't believe we have TWO teenagers in the house. After he got the boys in bed Der and I sat down at the kitchen table for a little dinner date. Hear that? I SAT DOWN, bent at the waist and everything! That my friends is progress! I had a delightful lunch with my good friend Kath yesterday. When her husband was Bishop my husband was one of his counselors. I've loved her from the first time we met. She called to ask if I wanted her to bring a Diet Coke because she was heading to McDonald's. Well long story short she ended up at my house with lunch for us both! She sat and visited with me while I layed on the bed and ate. Brady called at 2:00 wondering where I was. School was out early and I forgot because it was a Thursday! I was so glad Kath was here because she ran over and picked up the boys for me. Well did they ever think they were cool when they walked in the front door each holding a Slurpee! She spoiled us all that day! And a BIG thanks to her son Ron for babysitting his niece so she could come over for a while! I'm helping with Brockbanks musical again this year and I got the choreography ready for two numbers yesterday. Let's just hope that what is in my head and on paper will actually work with these kids on stage!! Oh and let's hope I can feel well enough to teach them on Monday!! I'm a bit concerned about getting up and about too soon, but I've already missed this weeks rehearsals and I can't afford to be gone any longer! Coke Zero is the best! And if you mix your drink 50% Coke Zero and 50% Diet Coke you have the PERFECT soda. Absolute perfection.

I'm a 2nd Degree . . .uh . no belt!

"Lucy! You got some 'splainin to do!" So last Tuesday night I was just finishing canning salsa and all I had left was to dump out the canner. Somehow as I was pouring out the boiling water it splashed out of the sink onto my belly. Hello severe 2nd degree burns and over a week in bed. The burn is about 7-8 inches long and 3 inches tall and very sore and ugly. We went to the ER to have it treated and Der decided to donate his right arm while we were there!! It is right above my belly button which makes it nearly impossibly to wear clothes. I have realized that I am a separates kind of dresser. I own a nightgown and one dress. This is the extent of my waistless wardrobe possibilities. So I have been living in one loose skirt and t-shirts. Sitting is also a painful ordeal. So I spend most of the day horizontal. If the meal is to tricky to navigate reclined, I eat standing up. It has not been fun. For me or for my sweetheart. Poor, wonderful, awesome, capable Derek has been running himself ragged. He actually canned more salsa last night on his own so we wouldn't lose our peppers and tomatoes. He gave the boys haircuts Saturday too! On top of all the daily things I do plus his own full time job he is exhausted. I can tell because for the first time in almost 16 years of marriage Derek didn't complete his before bed clothing ritual. Derek hates wrinkles and rumpled clothes. Every night before bed he lays out his clothes for work. He sprays Downey Wrinkle Release on his t-shirt and smooths it perfectly, or he irons it if he's wearing a button down, and then he either irons his shorts if they are tans, or he uses the Downey again if they are denim. But last night, and this is a big deal, he just threw his stuff in the dryer before getting in the shower and then he just lays them sort of straight on the footboard of our bed. His tan shorts have the flaps over the pockets that still had weird folds in them from the laundry (one of his pet peeves. He always irons these perfectly flat.) He still went to more effort than most folks, but for him this was not the norm! I felt like crying! He is a great husband and father. So this is why I have a 2nd degree no belt. Our close friends and family have been so great. Lisel thanks for driving the boys (and for the tasty treats!!) I may have to call you one more time! Thanks for the meals, treats, books, and visits! We love our friends and family. It's been a week now. It has finally stopped feeling like it was still burning! Now it is just plain sore. I love pain pills! You should have seen the look on the ER doctors face when he was asking me which pain pill I preferred and I said, "Do you really think I will need pain pills?" His face was priceless. Then he said, "You are really going to hurt." I chose Lortab and what a lovely thing has been! Just thought I'd share. . . Oh and for fun you should look up "Hot Kool Aid" on you tube and get ready to laugh your head off. Check out this dorks other videos there too. There are too many to name them all but another favorite of mine is "Malk." Yes, I'm a little disturbed (maybe I should lay off the Lortab!)

Happy Birthday

I have a great Dad.
He has taught me to always be myself. ALWAYS. You should always be the same no matter where you are or who you are with. He is a marvelous example of this. He never puts on airs or tries to impress. People like to be with him. I know I do!
My Dad has taught me to never take myself too seriously. He loves to have fun and enjoys a good laugh (even if the laughs on him!)
But there is one special thing that is really special about my dad.
My Dad chose me. Most parents get what they get and they don't throw a fit right (not that we would ever really throw a fit - hahah!) But my Dad chose a little girl who was almost 1 1/2 years old and took her home to be his daughter! My life changed that day. I will forever be grateful for loving parents who took me home and loved me! I love you Dad! Happy Birthday to you!! I hope it is a great day.

Insomnia

It's not fun. Normal people are asleep right now. I want to be asleep too! Boring post. Read at your own risk . . . Natalie went to her first night as a Junior Leader at Special Needs Mutual tonight. She was on cloud nine (what does that mean anyway?) She recognized Adam Bray. I asked her if he was wearing red. What do you think? She had some cute and hilarious stories to share from the night. She was so touched by the spirit of these awesome "kids." The youngest girl she spoke to was 12 and the oldest today was 55. It is going to be a great thing for her to do every week! The boys headed to the fair with my folks. They had a great time. A highlight was the seal show and the pigeons with feathers on their ankles (do pigeons have ankles?) Der took the day off today just so we could hang out and goof off. It was awesome. We ran out to a music store and the owner was a total 80's rocker. We were there for something else, but he totally tore it up on the guitar for us just for fun. It was seriously cool! I guess am easing into having all the kids in school. I am just filling up my days with other things. I volunteer weekly in the boys classes. I'm the PTSA Secretary for Brockbank. I've been making good dinners and lots of bread. Oh and next week I begin helping direct the junior high musical again. That is so dang much fun! We have two hens laying daily. This is so cool! The other two need to get on it! That would be four to five eggs a day thanks to Roxy the show off who lays two eggs a day! The beets are ready for canning. I'm not ready for canning but it must be done. The tomatoes are finally turning red. Our garden is late this year. I guess I'll go count sheep, or blessings, or the number of times the cherry tree brushes the roof above me. . .
