About Me

Julie Madsen

The last 3 years I worked in the public schools as a Content Mastery/Resource teacher. Now some of you may think to yourself, "What is a Content Mastery/Resource teacher?" Well, I will tell you. I worked with students that had mild/moderate disabilities. I worked with students that had a Specific Learning Disability (which means they do fine in most subjects, but need help in reading, writing or math), Autism (mild/moderate), Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impairments (usually kids with ADHD or Dyslexia), Intellectual Impairments/Mental Retardation, Hearing Impairments, Speech Impairments or Communication Disorders.

The kids were usually in their regular classroom for the majority of the day. I would pull them out of their class for a predetermined amount of time. Some students I would see only 2-3 times a week for 20-30 minutes. Other students I would have for 3 hours every day. At other times, students would stay with their class the whole day, and I would go into their classroom to work with them (a.k.a. inclusion).

Each student I worked with had an Individual Education Program (IEP). (In Texas, the program is referred to as the Admission, Review, and Dismissal program (ARD).) A team created IEP/ARD goals that were specific for the individual student. Part of my teaching role was working on academic and social goals with my students. Generally speaking, I assisted students in the areas of math, reading, writing, behavior, and social skills. The goals we created were specific and measurable. I would teach, re-teach, assess, monitor, and track progress. I sent a progress report to the parents every 9 weeks.

I am currently certified to teach students in pre-school to twelfth grade. However, I have had the most experience teaching students in Kindergarten to 5th grade. I have helped students who were struggling to succeed in school. Working in the local school district has helped me to understand the district’s philosophy, curriculum, testing, and expectations.

I enjoy teaching, and tutoring is a way for me to continue doing something I love.
