So, we did it! On January 21st Bret and I left the girls in the very capable hands of their grandmoms and headed to Hawaii for a week. There were a few tears shed... Mostly by me... and a lot of skyping. We had a great time. We hiked, we kayaked, we beached and we RELAXED! Here are some pics from the trip...

The view from our place...wow! We saw whales everyday we were there!
Packed and ready for the beach
Beautiful...quick stop...can't miss a photo op like this!
Hanalei Bay...nice!
Kilauea lighthouse...Another quick stop on the way to another great beach...
Secret Beach...seriously! I can't remember how we found out about this beach but the directions reminded us of being in the D.R. We actually had to locate a random dirt road and follow it past some weird landmarks and hike down a trail and out onto this beautiful beach. We seriously only saw a couple other people and some surfers. Amazing!
RELAXING
Kilauea lighthouse on the point behind me
After spending the day at secret beach we headed back to Kilauea lighthouse for some sight seeing. The picture above is the view of the beach we just left.
The lighthouse
Watching a pod of dolphins
Heading out...
On the way back to our place Bret spotted this fruit stand in someone's front yard. He had to have a cold coconut!
Yum!
It doesn't quite fit in the cup holder
Bret planned a cool hike for us to hanakapi'ai falls. I just want to note that Bret did warn me it was listed as "difficult". His encouragement to me was that it was not rated " most difficult". Ha...compared to what? It was pretty tough...but beautiful!
Taking in the view
The first two miles of the eight mile hike are along the shore with amazing views.
As we got close to the beach all these crazy warning signs were around every bend....do you think they want people to stay out of the water?
Once you hit the beach you take a turn and head inland for two miles to the falls
more warnings...
Our first peak at the falls
Cool waterfall swim here we come!
That is some hardcore mud!
Nice!
That was fun but now we have to hike four miles out!!!
After a couple serious beach days (after our crazy hike) Bret talked me Into a kayaking adventure. We took a kayak trip down the Hanalei River all the way to the Bay. It was fun!
A pit stop...
Heading out to the bay
Paddling in
Spelunking?
We spent one morning touring the local botanical gardens
Taking in the view
More taking in the view
More spelunking?
Best part of having to leave the beach each day...shaved ice!
Our front yard...wow!
