GEORGE TOWN: After sending out mails to about 100 friends to seek their help, a Japanese woman here hit on the idea of organising an event to raise funds for her disaster-struck country.
Emi Yamazaki, who is president of the Pink Hibiscus Club, a club for Japanese women here, said many Japanese living in Penang wanted to return to their country to help their compatriots.
“But I advised them not to do so, because of the radiation from the damaged nuclear plants,” she said.
The Japanese community will instead hold a Penang for Japan Disaster Relief Charity on March 27 to raise funds for the relief effort.
Yamazaki, the event’s organising chairman, said the idea started after she received numerous replies to an e-mail she sent out to friends, appealing for their help to support the Japanese people.
