good + bad news

get ready folks, this is a LONG entry as i got several stuff to update and i've been so busy and tired during weekdays that i cant be bothered to type. i reached home so late everyday!

anyway, the bad news is, i gotta take the SAMC sup paper, otherwise i will only be graduating with an ordinary degree even if my aggregate is second lower.

shucks.

luckily mon's friend is in the current batch, and so i got the notes and all to prepare for the july paper. i have no confidence at all coz the exam format n the practice questions are totally different!

im still not decided if i should go for the tutorial class coz i think i need to go all the way down to unicampus or dhoby ghaut to pay $50+ for the tutorial class.. perhaps i can find other ways.. like ask some of my friends who are currently studying at mdis to help me..

ah well.. even if i fail, i have to make sure i get the minimum 25 marks to avoid remodule. :\

on a happier note, my manager wants to convert me to perm. yippie!

another colleague has been transferred from facilities to my dept, meaning, my partner! so these few days was quite busy as she is new to hr, and so am i, we were having several meetings with jayce and my manager to guide us through the processes and stuff. besides that, i also have to run through some of the processes with her as well.

plus my manager will be on a business trip, so she pass along several stuff for us to do.. which leads to our drawers being overloaded with overdue stuff and new stuff. haha. gotta spend some time to clear them.

anyway, just as we finished one of our meetings, my manager ask me back into the meeting room again. she say she wants to speak to me.

i was a little puzzled as i went in n waited for her.

she: jerlyn, i want to speak to you about something.
me: yep
she: u are having a little too many personal calls. how? minus points already
me: har? really ah
she: yalor. so what are you planning to do about that?
me: hmm.. cut down lor.
she: no lah. seriously, i have observed you, and felt that you are quite a fast learner and all. I have also seek the others' opinions like jayce n all. and they quite like your attitude. so i want to tell you that i plan to convert you to perm, since i got the headcount n budget. there will also be an increment of $200 in your salary.
me: *still in shock*
she: how? why u dun look very happy or something?
me: my heart beating very fast.. hahaha
she:
haha. anyway, i have already spoke to my boss and he said if i think you are the right candidate for this job, and since i got the budget and headcount, i can go ahead.
me: *still smiling*
she: but of coz, do you like this job and wishes to go further? afterall, its data entry and filing, and you have only been doing this for a short time, so in time to come, you might be bored with all these.
me: i am sure in future there will be more to learn and more to do.
she:
yes, most probably there will be changes but we cant foresee the future. of coz probably 2-3 years down the road, we might be doing more things and whether are you still with us, or you seek your career elsewhere, it is entirely up to you.
me: yes.. ok.. i understand.
she: so any question?
me: oh.. erm.. can i know why the intention to convert? because the contract is actually for 6 months, and i have only been here for like a month..
she: im not sure if jayce has mentioned to you about the previous temp.
me: oh, a little.
she: ya. when she was with us for the 3 weeks+, she took alot of leaves, have alot of calls and all. she do her work half-heartedly, and she leave at 6 on the dot. so we decided to terminate her. as for you, i can see the passion, i also can see that you are willing to learn and also willing to stay back just to learn some of the processes unlike the previous temp. at the same time, you also get along very well with the others. so i hope i am not wrong in converting you. me: of coz.
she: anyway, i have already asked esther to contact the agency regarding the money issue like you are contracted so we need to know how to take you away from there n stuff. so as i will be on business trip, they will keep me updated and hopefully, i can convert you by 1st July. me: ok no problem.
she: so, anything else you wish to know or ask?
me: erm.. am i really having too many calls?
she:
no lah! im ok.
me: hmm.. so is there anything like you want me to improve on or take note of?
she: ermmmm. basically nothing much. like what i said, you are quite a fast learner, get along well with others, positive attitude n all. so, i hope you will carry on with the good work and i am right to convert you.
me: of coz. thank you very much.
she: so, ur turn to treat lunch har.. got $200+ bonus and additional $200 increment in your pay.
me: no problem! thanks!!!

yep thats about the conversation and the great news. lol

im really happy coz i've only been there for around a month, and manager is willing to give me the bonus and to convert me to perm.

----------------------------------------

went celebrating abby's birthday on tues at dempsey long beach. now this is really what i call an inhumane location (as unagigi mikael is so fond of saying). the place is easy to find, but the parking there is horrible! small carpark plus we have to walk along the grass, climb the stairs n all just to get to the restaurant!

like what ryan says, its as if he's going for an outfield. lol!

the food is just so-so, and terribly expensive, and the service is really horrible!

im certainly not going there to eat again!

anyway, we got a gucci keychain for her, along with the gucci envy me perfume and a hello kitty bracelet as we got a budget of $300+ and with the twin gucci gifts, its barely $200++.

------------------------------------------------------

on friday, i went st james (movida) with my manager and other colleagues. quite a fun group, but the place is a bore! the band's singing isnt fantastic to begin with, and they were singing in latin, spanish n all. we nearly fell asleep until we decided to go recce around. so, we went dragonfly and found that the place is alot better - at least the band there is much better and they sing mandarin songs! though i dun think the lady was being very professional.. she was like demanding to know whos the person who sent her sms n disrupt her singing n all when its she herself whos asking through the mic while the band is playing the song in the background.

anyway, back to movida. i was happily drinking my mixer (coke) until another colleague (i have never seen him before anyway), he sneakily pour the alcohol into my glass. -.-

as i was finishing that glass, he poured me another glass again and say, jerlyn, drink at least half a glass to welcome you to symantec!

so no choice, i got to drink. :\

so he said, dun worry about your manager or getting drunk. we all take care of each other here.
me: oh no, i wasnt worried about that. just that i dun really drink. and i will be catching a movie later.
he: are you sure? i dun believe you.
me: why? really. i dun drink much
he: but u dun look like one.
me: har? then i look like what?
he: u look like someone who can drink very well.
me: oh no lah. i dun drink much.

anyway, though its a VERY boring place, we still got some entertainers of those jokers dancing very funnily and sent all of us laughing helplessly. haha

so i got kel to come to vivo earlier to save me from that boring place. haha. waited for roy n abby and dear, we went to watch zohan. quite funny, but i think its abit too exaggerating and boring for certain scenes. still, i gave it around 3.5/5 or so.

------------------------------------------------------------

celebrated levyne's birthday yesterday and its supposed to be a surprise dinner.

she suspected something is wrong of coz, since some ppl who couldnt make it has already wished her happy birthday and while she was coming in, she saw scan's car. haha.

anyway, i think she was rather shocked to see us waiting inside the steamboat.

after dinner, we went arab st n its my first time smoking sishay or whatever the spelling is. dun like it, cant stand the smell. :\

we had lotsa fun there, talking crap cracking jokes n all.

had a great time, i have not seen them for sometime already.. n of coz, i also hope levyne really enjoyed herself that day.

-------------------------------------------------

and oh, i went shopping with dear and managed to buy some cheap stuff! din have time to take pictures but once i feel hardworking enough to take them, i will be posting them up.

friday the 13th

it has always been a belief that friday the 13th is a very very unauspicious day, and a day that anything, everything can go wrong.

i've never really believed in that, coz things can go wrong anyday, or if u are that unlucky, everyday can go wrong.

to prove my point, friday the 13th (which is yesterday), things went very smoothly for me.

i got a call from the agency in the morning, the conversation as below;

he: i got a good and bad news. which do you want to listen first?

so, i braced myself a bit, and asked for the bad news.

he (in a surprisingly cheerful voice): the bad news is, there are no bad news at all!

so i duh abit. haha

next he said, there will be an extra $275.(i forgot how many cents) credited into your account as part of your pay the next month!

i was like, har? why?

then he asked, what did u do at symantec? i didnt really do a proper follow up with you.

so we talked a bit on what i have been doing and he asked, so did u really do something very nice for them?

me: har?
he: otherwise why would they give u extra $200+?
me: har? u mean symantec gave me $200+?
he: yes lah. i received an email from esther (one of the TA girls) that symantec will be giving you extra $200+. must be u have got some outstanding performance or something.
me (still stunned): really? how come i duno?!
he: har? u mean u duno?
me: ya lah, no one tell me leh!
he: hmmm
me: should i start asking or something?
he: no lah, since they never tell u then dun ask lor.
me: oh ok..
he: so anyway, what did u really do there?
me: nothing much ah. just what they ask me to do lor.
he: hmm.. ok. anyway, congrats lah!
me: thanks!

afterwhich, we hanged up.

in less than 2 minutes, my manager called me to her cubicle.

her: jerlyn, i got something to tell u
me: yes?
her: you are having too many personal calls
me: stunned again. har? really ah? so sorry!!
her: no lah. i just want to tell u that i norminated you for the bonus award of $275.(i really forgot how many cents).
me: har? oh! thanks!!!! no wonder i received a call from the agency telling me that, i was like har, whats going on, how come no one tell me.
her: what? u mean they told u already?
me: yar
her: how can they tell you before me!
me: oh no lah. they called to congratulate me. i supposed they thought u have already told me lah.
her: hmm yar i suppose so.. but anyway, its not much lah.. my boss gave the money and there are some extra, so i spread them out and norminated you for the extra $200+
me: no lah, its not the amount that matters. really thank u
her: still thinking about the agency telling me first. how can they tell u before i can! i need to tell esther about the bonus first before telling u.
me: hahaha. they probably thought that i know about it long ago bah. haha. anyway, really thank u very much.
her: so lunch on u har.
me: no problem!

anyway, we din managed to have lunch lah. she went mia for several hours. lol.

i was indeed very very surprised when i heard this. of coz, the $200+ may be extra $$ for the department, but the fact that my manager is willing to give them to me despite me joinning them for less than a month really mean alot to me. they can very well keep it for themselves right.

besides, how many newly joined temps got a bonus from their companies when they are with them for less than a month?! moreover, im those very blur kind. hahaha.

after that, i smsed with that agency guy telling him that my manager has just told me about the bonus. he replied that i am the first and only temp to receive that, and it means that i have a bright future in hr. but he also have more job satisfaction coz he was the one who interviewed me, and ask me to continue working hard. haha

ok, that roughly sums up the supposedly terribly unlucky friday the 13th. so, do u still think its that unlucky? lol.

anyway, i think im quite lucky to be able to work with nice people.

when i was still with stanchart, my manager also norminated me for Gold Award for Temps, in recognition of excellent performance. i was also quite surprised as my manager din tell me anything, until the agency called.. so, i got awarded a certificate, and also $100 robinsons voucher.

and now, in less than a month, my new company and manager gave me a bonus of $200+..

time to go baibai and thank dua pek gong for his po pi!

5:36 PM

another week passed without any major event.

work is quite ok, the people there are nice, and i quite like the environment there. some minor conflicts with other people but i guess this is rather normal. was quite frustrated at times, but knowing me, the frustration went away as quickly as it came.

perhaps most of u might realised that i dun stay angry for a long time, unless im really really very pissed. all it takes is to have someone to listen to me ranting and complaining, i'll be fine after that.

of coz when i got reminded or have to repeat the incident, it might make my blood boil again. but as usual, i will be fine after the second bout of rantings and complaints.

been tackled with some tricky questions from jayce on friday while we were having lunch.

lets see if i can recap our conversation.

she started off by saying sometimes i am too straightforward, and not everyone will appreciate that.

like for example, that morning, i accompanied one of the colleague for breakfast downstairs. when we came up, jayce took me to our storeroom n said, "its ok to go down for breakfast. even cecilia (my manager) do that everyday. but at least she will wait till i am in then she will go for breakfast. otherwise, there will be no one to answer the helpdesk hotline."

so i said, "oh ok. i get it."

then she continued, "i thought the both of u just went to toilet or something, so i figured both of u will be back soon. but in the end, i also went to the toilet to ps. when im back, both of u are not back yet! it's not that we dun allow you to go for breakfast. but if there's no one to answer the helpdesk line for a long time, other people might start talking."

so again i replied, ok i understand.

so we both stayed quiet for awhile until she gave the intention of going out of the storeroom.

so without thinking much, i said, "oh thats all ah?"

then she gave me those look and said, "of coz lah. the purpose of asking u in to the storeroom is to tell u this privately. u can't expect me to say this kind of things infront of others right."

then i explained, "oh, no, i dun mean it that way. what i meant was i thought that you also wanted to teach or show me some things thats why u brought me to the storeroom first."

obviously she dun take it that way.

so during lunch, she mentioned about this and say something like, not everyone like people to be so straightforward like when people ask you about things, then u just say, neh its here lor, or whatever sort of things. it makes people feel that they are stupid. so try to think twice first before you speak.

fine, i understand that sometimes i am too straightforward, and some people are quite offended by that.

then she added that, one of the reason she shortlisted me is because she is able to see what i am. meaning, there are some other candidates that she interviewed and they show her someone else instead of themselves. however for me, she see me as what i am, not trying to be somebody else, not trying to be fake. and the other reason is that i am straightforward.

of coz the first thing that came into my mind was that, u like me for being straightforward, but now u want me to be less straightforward. so what should i do?

i was quite frustrated. still, i understand where she is coming from, and i know that most people are just wearing masks when they interact with others.

i will learn to be more diplomatic.

then came the funny questions.

jayce: so, how are u coping with the job? do u like it?
me: ok lor
jayce: what do u mean by ok lor? like means like, dun like means dun like.
me: hmm.. just ok lor.
jayce: then if we want to extend ur contract or to convert u, what do u think?
me: ok ah, i dun mind.
jayce: what? dun mind?
me: yar, im willing to go further
jayce: wah, u sound as if we are begging you to stay n u r willing to n dun mind.
me: thats not what i meant
jayce: but thats what u said. u make it sound like it's only a job and u can do with or without it.
me: of coz if symantec wants to extend or convert me, i will be happy to have the chance.
jayce: this is not the answer i am looking for.
me: then what kind of answer are you looking for? i din say i dun like the job, nor did i say i like the job. it is really ok to me, and i dun mean anything else
jayce: ok, i still think that u dun like your job.
me: (quite frustrated) again, i din say anything about not liking it. if i say i like it very much, u probably think that im fake, and you will ask why i like and if i cant tell u why, its not going to get us anywhere.
jayce: alright, now i can see that u dun like your job.
me: i already said that theres nothing about liking or disliking. its the fact that i really feel ok about the job and if theres a chance to carry on working, i'll love that. but if thats not what u see from what i said, then i got nothing to say.

both of us stayed quiet for awhile then we changed the topic.

what occurs in my mind was that, not everyone have the opportunity to like what their job can offer them. probably 1 in 10 will really like their job. every job got their pros n cons. i havent think of this "like your job anot" question. to me, now is a learning process and it is not right for me to make judgement of liking or disliking. afterall, i am new to hr and im not sure what to expect. since im not sure what to expect, and i got no other relevant experience, how to know whether is this a job to my liking anot? there must be another relevant experience to be able to make comparison.

i'll admit, maybe i am too blunt and straightforward. but what's the point of beating around the bush?

anyway, i asked her, so how about u? do you like what u were doing last time? (that is, my this current job scope) and she replied, i like the job, but i want to do more.

so obviously, this is the answer she is looking for.

tsk.

the next thing i thought of is that, she is really very deep. so i better be careful of what i say n all.

what a day. :\
