Annual Christmas Letter

The file size was too big to email out, so we are posting our Christmas letter here. Sorry to be redundant if you've already read it!

December 2008
Happy Holidays! We hope you have had a nice year and wish to share our annual family update with you.

Finn Ripken was born April 21. He has the same initials as his paternal grandfather, just as Austin does. Ripken is such a happy little guy whose favorite thing to do is eat. He also enjoys ripping papers, chewing cords, and laughing at Ainsleigh. His motor skills are developing much quicker than we would like, and he’s crawling, pulling himself up to standing, going up stairs, threatening to walk, and getting into absolutely everything.

This year Ainsleigh, now 3, started pre-school two mornings a week, played on a soccer team, and began dance lessons. She scored one goal at soccer but generally preferred practices to games. At dance, we’re thinking her personality may be more suited to modern than ballet. In March she moved out of the nursery to the room next door, which had previously been the storage room that most people call an office (so this was no small task). Ainsleigh is into Thomas and Friends, sharks, coloring and painting, and is very hopeful that it will snow so she can build a snowman.

We spent the summer in Baltimore, where Austin interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital. We lived right downtown, so we were able to walk to everything. We had a great time going to many Orioles games, where Ainsleigh discovered peanuts and fireworks, and her favorite position was the catcher. We also made weekly trips to the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, and the Baltimore Zoo. Ainsleigh’s favorite things were the sharks and the dolphin show at the aquarium, feeding giraffes and brushing goats at the zoo, and digging for fossils and watching planetarium shows at the science center. We also went to some of the Smithsonian museums in DC, and Tracy took both kids on her annual PA/NY road trip. We stopped in State College and finally went to the new creamery, enjoyed an amusement park with the Knoebels, and visited Grandma in NY where we went to the museum, fed ducks on the canal, went out to Lake Ontario, swam at the aquatics center, and saw the O’Connors and Janssons. Kay and Reed came to visit over July 4th and we went to Fort McHenry, because nothing says July 4th like shooting off a canon followed by a baseball game. We also went to a train museum. A few weeks later Kay returned with our nephew Erik and we took him to his first baseball game. Although we could have done without the mice and sirens and with more vegetation, we had a fun summer living in Baltimore.

In October we went to Asheville, NC for fall break. We enjoyed the nature center, some museums, and hiking to several waterfalls. Our favorite part was playing in the leaves, which were very nearly at peak.

Tracy just finished her third semester of PhD coursework in mathematics and teacher education. She also taught the undergrad math methods course, which was very rewarding but resulted in our most overwhelming semester yet. She is also supervising student teachers at the school where she last taught first grade. This spring should be her last semester of coursework!

Austin graduated from UNC this month with his MBA and has one remaining course this spring to complete his MHA. He continues to officiate soccer and volleyball. Austin is currently on the job market, and we are anxious to see where we will be living at the end of the spring semester.

We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and wish you joy and peace throughout the holiday season and in the new year!

Love,

Austin, Tracy, Ainsleigh & Ripken

Scandinavian Christmas Fair

The first Saturday in December is the annual Scandinavian Christmas Fair. This is one of Tracy's favorite events of the year. They have traditional dancing, singing, costumes, handicrafts, and food. This was Ainsleigh at the fair in 2006 (she was there as a 2 month old in 2005, but no pics of that). Reading a Swedish story.

Then last year, 2007, dancing around the tree with Farmor.

This year she declared that dancing around the tree was “too scary,” so instead she hung out with Farfar and listened to the music. Yes, that’s the same shirt all 3 years. It’s pretty small now, and when we yanked it on that morning she said “I think this is Rippy’s shirt.” Next year, it certainly will be.

Rippy wore the hat Kay made for Ainsleigh when she was a baby.

This is a cross-stitch that Austin’s Grandmother made as an Advent calendar. Austin’s Mom used to tie 3 presents (one for each of the 3 brothers) to each day when Austin was growing up.

This year, Kay tied one present on each day for Ainsleigh. No surprise, this is a huge hit. When she wakes up after nap, she asks “is it tomorrow yet?” to see if she can have another.
Here they are, after the fair, along with the candy ropes that Ainsleigh brought home for Daddy (who was supposedly studying for a final…but somehow ended up at a UNC soccer game with Garth).
The highlight for Tracy is getting some new ornaments for our tree. It’s not like you ever come across handmade Swedish ornaments, so this is the one time a year to get some. The little baby one (bottom right) is in honor of Ripken’s first Christmas. The Tomtes definitely aren’t traditional, but I thought they were fun.

The Semester in Review

We survived a very exhausting semester. Between Austin finishing up his MBA coursework, Tracy's coursework, and (the straw that broke the camel's back) Tracy teaching a course, it was pretty rough. The good and bad was that our schedules were staggered so that we could trade watching the kids and going to class, but as a result we haven't seen each other very much. Here are a few photos of things that I didn't have time to post throughout the fall.
Ripken when he first started sitting up. No more infant tub!

They have fun splashing each other, although Ainsleigh still requests a few minutes at the end to have the tub all to herself so she can play "rough stuff" without Rippy.

My Mom came to visit for Halloween weekend. We posted lots of Halloween pics previously, but here are a few more from that weekend. Museum of Life and Science train ride.

Grandma, Grandpa, Rippy, Ainsleigh

One of the last soccer games of the season. After the first game (posted previously) Ainsleigh didn't sit down when someone else got the ball. However, she never really understood the part about chasing after the ball and trying to get it back. By the end of the season she would sometimes follow the swarm of kids, but the ball still regularly went right by her without any attempt to get it.
When I asked her if she wanted to play on a soccer team again in the spring, she said "maybe we can just play soccer in the backyard." Sounds good to us!

Thanksgiving
(sorry about the layout...I keep fixing it on my screen, but then it gets messed up when it publishes!)

Ripken was the perfect age for Thanksgiving...as in, able to EAT! And boy, can he ever. He is truly a bottomless pit.
Align Left

In addition to being his usual charming self, the day before Thanksgiving he also...

...started to crawl! The good thing was that he waited until the end of the semester to start getting into everything; the bad thing was it was the end of the semester, so the house was a mess and there was a lot that he could (and did) get into!
More sweet potatoes, please!
Full? I'm not full. I'm never full!
Austin had many interviews through recruiting at the Business School in November. He had several second-round interviews, so he was traveling at the end of every week for about a month. We sent him this when he was gone for the first out-of-town interview. So far no job offers, so we're in a state of uncertainty right now, in terms of the job and if we're moving this spring like we had planned (even if just locally). Surely something will work out, but right now we can't tell what that will be. We're glad to now be on break for a few weeks, although we've put off so many house projects we won't have much time to relax. Still, it's nicer to be focused on things around here rather than writing random papers (says Austin) and grading heaps of papers (says Tracy).

7 Months

A few pictures from the day Ripken turned 7 Months old.
First of all, let's look back at Baby Ainsleigh for the comparison:
We keep saying how solid RIpken is, but Ainsleigh was a total CHUNK at this age!
Here she is again:
Ripken was too squirmy, so this was the best we could do:
Not nearly as chubby as big sis!
Some pictures from the 7 Month day (click to enlarge): It's time to lower the crib!
He is always hanging over the edge when we go in to get him.
