Last Day of 2008

Last post for 2008.....

Finally graduated. Things were like kind of a rush for me. Last paper on 10/11, and my flight back home was 15/11 so that I can resume my National Slavery (NS), and then return to Australia using my student visa. ORD is 02/03 and I think I will be setting my flight to be 06/03. Not much time. Don't know if I will regret the decision to go back to Australia to work.

So now, its back to camp. Nothing much to do actually. Just trying to occupy myself so that time will pass by faster.

The public transport today is super f***ed. SMRT trains and SBS buses seems to be running on a lower frequency. Resulting in me being late for camp (even though it doesn't matters, I'm a punctual person). Commuters cannot do anything about it. so sad.... monopoly... so good...

Anyway...

Happy 2009!

There are still many things I want to do before I leave. 4 days... it ain't enough.

Facts of Farts

Found this interesting site on farts. And some of it.....

How long does it take fart gas to travel to someone else's nose?

Fart travel time depends on atmospheric conditions such as humidity, temperature and wind speed and direction, the molecular weight of the fart particles, and the distance between the fart transmitter and the fart receiver. Farts also disperse (spread out) as they leave the source, and their potency diminishes with dilution. Generally, if the fart is not detected within a few seconds, it will be too dilute for perception and will be lost into the atmosphere forever.

Exceptional conditions exist when the fart is released into a small enclosed area such as an elevator, a small room, or a car. These conditions limit the amount of dilution possible, and the fart may remain in a smellable concentration for a long period of time, until it condenses on the walls.

How can one cover up a fart?

There is a company called Fartypants that sells underwear designed to absorb the odor of farts. If you should be caught without your Fartypants, another ploy is to blame the dog or cat, if one should be present, or complain about how the wind must be blowing from the direction of the paper mill.

As for the sound... if you are in a large group of people, act oblivious and innocent, or glance quickly at the person next to you, as if you think he/she did it. Other strategies include coughing or suddenly moving your chair so that people think that they misheard the fart. If you are with one other person, you can act as if nothing happened, and the other person may believe he was mistaken in thinking he heard a fart.

CJT addresses the problem of farting loudly in a public restroom as follows: "My solution: use a handful of loose toilet paper, cover your butt hole and it will muffle the farting; my friends and I call it the 'Buff Muff'!"

Depending upon the company, another strategy is not to cover it up, but to proudly proclaim the fart as your own grand accomplishment and to issue a challenge to the others to outdo that one if they think they can.

Plans After Graduation...

Now that my student visa expires in March, there shouldn't be any problems in me applying for a temporary residence visa, or even PR. Just need to count and plan the number of days.

106 days still to serve the bloody army. What they want me back for??? What can I do in 106 days?! Do paperwork. Do they really need an extra person to do those stuff? Bloody waste of resources and money.

Staying back in brisbane is pretty much good. Get the experience, say 5 years? Then head back to Singapore? Or should I even head back? Hmmm.... By that time, I'll probably be 30, with a beer belly. The future's uncertain.... lets see how it goes.!

080808

This day is the day where the 29th Olympics is being held at 8:08pm in Beijing, as well as the day where my cousin held her wedding in Canberra. I flew around 90 minutes there and my niece picked me up at the airport.

It was a case of where east meets west. The wedding was western styled, with a few chinese traditions slotted in between, like the tea ceremony and the "Yum-Seng".

The dinner was a 3-course dinner, and lots of wine, and champange. A new experience indeed!

BRISBANE'S OLYMPIC BID

WHY WE SHOULD
  • We could finally stop pretending to be proud about the winking Matilda kangaroo from the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
  • It might get the Airport roundabout fixed.
  • The Story Bridge Hotel's annual cockroach races could be included as an event.
  • The Olympic truce might be the only thing to stop the Queensland Liberals and Nationals fighting
  • Because we need a reason for our restaurants to stay open after 9pm
  • We could out-do Sydney, and it would really annoy Melbourne
WHY WE SHOULDN'T
  • We don't have nearly enough smog
  • Rowing events could be problematic: no water in the dams, Citycats positively dangerous on the water.
  • How could an already inadequate public transport system ever cope?
  • The equestrain events might also be a problem, what with the Hendra virus and equine influenza.
  • Four-minute showers wouldn't be popular with Olympians
  • Do we really want to make Kevin Rudd even more smug?
  • With Beijing's budget $40 billion-plus, it's just a huge waste of money

Aftermath

It has been exactly 2 weeks since I last took a bus. Today, I went out for a walk to Chinatown, actually was to When I boarded the bus, i stood before the bus-driver tongue-tied for a couple of seconds before telling him what I want. Had been cooped at home these 2 weeks, or rather, Uni and home, studying for tests and doing assignments. Why do they have to make the datelines so near to each other!

Anyway, its over, and I'm quite happy with what I'd accomplished. =) Good to find myself breathing again! Preparing for the next hurdle!!! But before that, need to breathe.... =)

TK Band

TK Band, otherwise known as Tanjong Katong Band, was a large part of my life from 1997 - 2000. Yesterday was the biennial event of the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) competition for secondary schools display band. Though I'm not physically there myself, I was there at the National Stadium Spiritually. In the end, my spirits were not sufficient for the band to clinch their 6th consecutive "Best Display Band" title, losing also the "Best Drum Major" title to Deyi Secondary. Is this the fall after the golden age?

Watched the band's performance on youtube, and was disappointed to say that it didn't make my hair stand. Maybe I wasn't there physically, maybe the video and sound weren't clear. From my very very personnal point of view, the last formation had too many things/distractions. Chaotic! I agreed with some of the comments made from the guy shooting it. "They didn't move me", "Show me something new". What I was certain was that there were many reused formations and music. From 1998 - 2006. The london bridge, forbidden city, "Nessun Dorma", "New World Symphony", ... ... ...

What happened? Deyi had a stronger desire than TK? Complacency? Panel of adjudicators didn't like it (thailand, US, canada, netherlands, denmark)? Management? From what I heard, only 1 cheer was heard from the alumni throughout the competition. How sad. What happened to the batches from 1998 to 2006 and earlier? No sense of belonging? the sweat, the tears, under the hot sun, in the muddy fields?

For me, I seemed to have distant from the alumni. I prefer to call myself "ex-member". Still remember vividly when I was in sec 4, after the July competitions. My buddies and I were so eagerly waiting for us to "O.R.D" so that we can all put on the alumni T-shirt, which was exclusively for the alumni. But now, I'm not sure. The shirts have changed, and only the selected few are allowed? to wear it.

I was there for the past 3 competitions (2002, 2004, 2006) to show my support, and even "helped". This year, I wasn't there, and so were many other ex-members. Even my senior of 5 years who was there to help out from 1996 - 2006 didn't turn up. Hope someone from the alumni committee do something about this failure, and make sure the band WILL win in 2010.

Disappointing... So disappointing... Anyway, found a couple of pictures from 2000

Last "Killer" Formation - The Forbidden City with lanterns

See me??? There !!! There !!! There !!!

Don't know why Sec 4 stand at the corner of the formation. Most end somemore... Was 1 - 2 steps from the center line for most of it. I have to say, thats how the steps work from the previous formation which was.... i forgot... oops! Lets see.... Camera... hour glass.... naboo fighter... sea horse... Ks.... Forbidden City... form up... that should be it... so.... ya... the kaleidoscope, and we (my mirror image) was supposed to wheel out, therefore, outmost of the formation. "Tadaa!!! "

This is a super duper dry module. All so theory based. So not used to it. Words give me a headace... I still prefer looking at numbers and Greek letters. Why do engineers need to learn about project management?

My Room

For those who'd not seen my room, or part of it.... Here it is!

This space is actually approximately 25% of the total area... Basically, I only used about 50% of the room space... the other 50%.... storage, and left to collect dust. Look at how messy it is! Haha.
The guitar.... dumb-bell.... I'm getting fit, as well as musically inclined... Hehe... Quote from someone.... "学音乐的孩子不会变坏" True or not? You decide on yourself.

Summer has passed and autumn has arrived. Weather at night has turned chilly. about 16 degrees. Nice temperature to sleep! But day temperature is still scorching... Therefore, one tends to fall sick easily with this temperature fluctuation. So, friends in australia, do take care. Drink more water, have more fruits and vegetables, and pop a vitamin C pill. As for me, I'm proud to say that I'd not fallen sick (flu, cough, etc....) since I stepped into this Kangaroo land.

3个人A$35。

Time Flies

It has been 56 days in Singapore. Not much changes, except that transportation fare rose, price of food rose. Transport alone these 56 days costs me about $100. What to do? Pay And Pay lo... no choice... 66% chose to Pay And Pay.

Had local delicacies and met some friends. To those who make it, thanks for turning up. Really appreciate it. "3 Cheers for those who made it! Hip Hip!~~(Hurray)! Hip Hip!~~(Hurray)! Hip Hip!~(Hurray)" For those who can't due to other commitments, there's always other time. I hope.

And now, its "time to..... say goodbye....." and "so long..... farewell..... its time to say good~byee" Need all the luck and good fortune for my studies next semester, so those who don't really need it, please donate some to me. I'll return it to you after I graduate. Its a promise. With 2 year international warranty.

Heartfelt Thanks.

Macau and Zhu Hai

02 Feb to 05 Feb. Trip with aunts, uncles and cousins to Zhu Hai (珠海), China and Macau. Took the inaugural flight from Singapore to Macau via Jetstar Airways? Flight attendant from Japan was really a disaster. His English I mean. Couldn't make sense what he was talking. "Budget Airline What" some would say, but these people are the one who're going to help you passengers to evacuate in the case of an emergency. How to when he can't even communicate with the passengers?!

Overall, the trip was urm..... rushed. nothing really much to see. Just an experience. Just a little comment or two. Culture in China really is.... from traffic culture to social culture... though this wasn't my first time in china, but its still really an eye opener.

Traffic was really terrible. Motorist doesn't abide by the traffic laws... don't think there exist... and one will ponder how those motorist get their license? Does it exist at all? Everyone just horn and horn... very irritating... and this "phenomena" is getting its way into tiny Singapore. Horn-Horn-Horn.

Smoking can be considered a past-time in China. Almost everyone smokes. And worse still, everywhere! Even inside an enclosed area like the shopping center. There are even litter bins with signs on it stating "No Smoking" of "严X禁烟", but people still smoke around it! and around the shopping center. Don't think they really understand....

Macau is really a paradise for avid gamblers. There are 3 islands according to the "guide", and the one we're on has 28 casinos. Can you imagine that? Went to a couple of them. Actually, its owned by the same company, "Sands Casino". According to the "guide", Sands built its casino, hoping to recoup everything by 3 years, but they 原本代利 in 8 months. How wonderful can that be? The owner of Sands Casino was so frustrated that the casino has such a small capacity (163000 Square foot), that he built another casino "Venetian".

Think there's a lot more than casinos in Macau, like the famed Portuguese Egg Tarts. People there speaks mainly Cantonese, and they weigh in pounds, not kg. If time permits, I would like to return to Macau and visit the places of attractions as well as the local food.

I'd uploaded the photos onto my facebook account. Have a look. ;-)

Cycling Trip

Took some photos along the way...

Tampines Mall

My primary school
Gongshang Primary School.
The place changed quite a lot.

My previous place of residence
This place changed a lot too!

My Secondary School
Tanjong Katong Sceondary School.
Little change to this place, as there aren't a lot of space for further development.

As you can see, my cycling trip was cut short, and that was my last place of "interest". Reason was I got "caught" by someone I know from band while I was taking this photo. There was actually a meeting going on regarding the band competition this year. So... had to "give face" and go attend the meeting and contribute some ideas (which I didn't). Lost pretty much interest in band already... and it lasted 3 hours before I left. Ya, so thats all. Hope that I'll have more photos

I'm a Qualified First-Aider

3 days course, $90, and you can be a first-aider. Having first-aid qualification is requirement for my Engineering Degree, so no choice have to attend.

My class consists mainly aunties and uncles... urm... should be big sisters and big brothers. As the new Manpower regulations requires at least 1 in 25 staff to be a qualified first-aider, they were either sent by their companies to attend this course, or their job-scope requires them to have certain knowledge on first-aid. As this license is only valid for 3 years, most of them were just there to get refreshed and updated with any new regulations.

What is covered in this course is mainly CPR and bandages. Just the basic of saving lives. Had a test today, and expectedly passed. The tester was Uncle Chia, a 75 year old man who'd joined the St John's in the 1960's. He just recovered from a heart-attack, had 4 of this arteries clogged, and therefore a bypass operation. A very nice fella.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Kept myself pretty occupied with the first-aid course for 3 days. Trying to keep my focus away, but once lesson ended at 4, I would be walking the streets alone.

Tuesday - Went to parkway for my haircut. Had a walk around parkway parade after that trying to kill time. Saw many school kids. Time was about 5pm. Why the hell are they in a shopping center on a weekday when they should be at home? Still can remember my routine as a secondary school kid, which is home after school, or band. No gallivanting!!! I'm a boring person la to say... Haha... no life. My secondary school life evolves around school, band, home.

Wednesday - Met friend to pass some things and have dinner. Supposed to meet at 7pm, and lesson ended at 3. 4 hours for me to walk. Decided to walk to the nearby Bugis Junction. Walk walk see girls, but see already more sad. See more, think more. Saw my NS signal sergeant who happened to be working as a cook/chef in a Japanese restaurant. Will get discount should I patronize. So people, if you are interested in this new Japanese restaurant beside Sakae Sushi in Bugis Junction, please let me know. We can go together. :-)
Guess what's near to Bugis? Yes my friends, it has got to be Suntec City, and Marina Square. Don't want to write in details as that will take a very very long time... and then later on to Ngee Ann City. After dinner, home.

Thursday - Test-day + some revision. Meeting BMT mates for "Ba Kut Teh" at Geylang Lorong 13. It was good I think. $4+ for a mixed bowl of "Ba Kut" and some of the pig's parts. Think my sense of taste is turning aussie. Can't really take spicy food. Chilli to be exact. Die die...
Followed them around the even lorongs for some after-dinner "activity". Was in one lorong when 1 guy shouted out loud some words, followed by hookers running in 1 direction, hiding behind vehicles. Seconds later, a police van came into sight. They even hid in the drains behind vehicles. Very well trained. Can join the Army. And when the van turned the corner, all went back to their usual business. It seems to me that the police van was just "going through motion" Think they don't know meh... pretend only...
Besides prostitutes, there were also gambling tables in 1 of the lorongs playing大小. Kind of interesting as this is my first time seeing illegal gambling. Had to quicken pace when passing by those gamblers as it would get complicated should the police appear. Though it's not my first time walking through these even lorongs, i still find it quite disturbing for girls of different age and race to be there touting, hoping for your patronization.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday tomorrow. Don't know what to do. Lose weight. Cheers.

What Type of Heart Do You Have

Got this application from Facebook.

If you don't wish to strain your eyes reading, it reads:

"You fall in love quickly and easily. You give so much in a relationship, and you don't expect much in return. You love always seeing your lover and you just love them as they are. You have a huge desire to whomever you love and you stay in love forever."

Very true leh! 100% accurate. First time seeing such accurate readings. Completely stunned.

----------------------------------------------------
Finally went for a long distance cycling. Cycled for a distance of I think 15-20km? I'm really bad at gauging distances. Went from home -> upper serangoon road -> potong pasir -> bendemeer -> jalan bersah -> fullerton -> esplanade -> suntec -> nicoll highway -> geylang (oops) -> macpherson -> upper serangoon -> serangoon gardens, chomp chomp -> kovan -> home.

Geylang is the reputable red light district of Singapore. Prostitutes filled the even lorongs. Even though I am only at lorong 8, I can see tonnes of call girls standing along the streets, touting for customers. Easy money??? Its really sad to see them doing this to themselves. Some are really young looking. So sad... aren't they afraid of catching some diseases or what?

Hope the society will turn for the better, which I think will not happen in my lifetime.

Another Boring Day

Guess what? I did not go swimming again! even though the sun was scorching. Hehehe. Went to register for first-aid cost which cost $90. It is a requirement for my Bachelor program to have completed a first-aid course. It will be a 3-whole day course from 9.30am to 4.30pm at St John's Headquarters at Beach road starting next Tuesday.

Went on to meet 2 of my BMT mates for dinner at Orchard road. The weather in Singapore is really unbearable. Hate it. 5 minutes of walk and I am already feeling wet and sticky. Yucks! And I am walking at a really slow pace as compared to the others.

Tuesday, 8th January 2008

Wanted to go for a swim. Woke up at 9.30am, looked at the sky, said thank you, and went back to sleep. It rained minutes later.

Wanted to go night cycling. It began to drizzle seconds before I reach the meeting point. Geez....

I just want to sweat it out, change my focus to something. Why do you want to play with me? Going to download and watch lots of taiwanese variety shows. Be it lame or stupid. I just want to laugh. Any comedies to recommend? I need to shift my focus... Hopefully it'll help. Hopefully...

1 week

It has been a week back in Singapore. Nothing unusual. Ate some food, met some friends, walked some streets. Moments I will try to enjoy and try to be happy before I return to Brisbane.

Well, the first few days of 2008 hasn't been really great actually.
