just finished never let me go by kazuo ishiguro. amazing stuff i tell you. i picked up the book without knowing anything about it but when i started it was hard to stop. never been so intrigued by a book after american gods or 1984.
the author is really a good story teller. it begins seemingly like a simple touching story about the delicate friendship among 3 friends, and as the story progressed it became more dark and profound. i don't really know the whole plot but there are nuggets of information all around the book, told in such a nonchalant manner that although i pondered about the significance of that information, i was more interested in the following sentences. it was like there were all this pieces to a puzzle but you don't know how it fits until the story reveals the most crucial piece (again, in a nonchalant in-your-face manner) than you get an epiphany and everything starts to fall into place (much to your horror exactly).
ultimately, i realised that despite being set against the horrific backdrop and the sad fates awaiting the characters , at the end, this book is still about the innocent and delicate friendship among the 3 characters through different stages of their lives and the fragility of life. it could have went the other way into a sci-fi action book, ala the island, but i'm glad it remains as it was; focusing on how the characters best made up for lost time, their internal struggles with themselves and people around them rather than the injustice of the whole situation at large.
the end of the book left me burning with questions and i felt unjust and infuriated for the characters even though they were at peace with themselves. but i guess it was so coz they have been socialised to think that donations were their goals in 'life'. kathy, the main character is liken to be a wise old lady who had lived beyond her time and felt that she had nothing more in life to look forward to but only the wonderful memories to reminisce and pass time until she 'completes'.
this book deserves a long rant because it is really that good. apparently there is a movie on it too (with keira knightley!!!). can't wait to see it!
