Where oh where are Saturday morning cartoons? You know what I mean, bugs bunny, daffy duck, the roadrunner and the acme loving wile e. coyote. Can you get those on DVD anywhere? Seems like everything from the 80's is coming back, the clothing, the movies, everything is being remade. Where are the Saturday morning cartoons of old. You know, where the anvil or piano is dropped on someone's head and they see stars but are alright? We were NEVER fooled by that. What I do wonder is how fooled kids these days are by power rangers, pokemon and whatever other nonsense is on tv these days. I'll admit freely that I gave up on all that when my oldest nephew was watching cartoons (about 15 years ago), because it was all so fake and yet he really seemed into it. The rest of the kids too. They all seemed to 'not get it' when they hit someone and it HURT. Mostly because it seems like those shows are too 'real' but never show the outcome of the 'fighting'...
Give me bugs bunny anyday, or those little chipmunks chip and dale who would go into someone's garden and pull down the carrots and eat them until their little cheeks were stuffed full. No real way for kids to misunderstand that, now is there?

500 posts..
I've reached the 500 post mark! Yeah! I wish I had more to contribute this week, but you'll have to settle for what I can give you. I'm still not feeling the greatest and it's taking a lot of effort just to get through work. I took a nap yesterday evening while my hubby watched monster trucks on tv. I still slept most of the night and woke up tired. Doesnt seem quite fair.

Woohoo!...
My hubby got a raise! Yeah! He's been on his job almost a year now. He's pretty happy as I think I've indicated before, which is nice. Usually by this time he's bored with a job. I guess getting the type of job he has wanted makes all the difference. Woohoo!

Food...
Normally I'm a total pig, but I've had a hard time getting enough to eat (not that I'm hungry, I'm not, so I'm not taking in enough calories)...
I keep taking snacks with me to work, and I'm out of a lot of easy to prep 'real food' so I had Easy Mac for the second time this week.
So now I'm starving.
My hubby put chicken on the grill...
and this morning? He unloaded the dishwasher. How awesome is that?

We went to see a house today.. In the merry merry..
Month of May...
Anyway, we went and saw this awesome cute little move-in ready house. Sure there's things that could be done to it (get the old people smell out, pull up the rugs to reveal the hardwood) stuff like that, but otherwise, in really really good shape.
But it's on 5 acres of flat land, no hills, no creek. Frowny face. Now what?

Fun Monday WAS...
supposed to be about vacations... we really haven't had very many. I went to see Niagra falls once. In the winter. Totally awesome. We went to Louisville and saw the 'slugger' bat factory and Churchhill Downs (race track). We have a vacation to NC coming up soon!

My sweetheart...
I just wanted to say that it really hit me this afternoon that my hubby is really a sweetheart. When we were first considering entering into parenthood, I knew he would be a good father. What I didn't know is if he could be a good father and a good husband at the same time. I think those fears are put to rest. He's done everything possible to make my first few nausea ridden weeks easier. If I couldn't stand the smell of the sink, he'd wash up the few dishes that were waiting there, if I couldn't cook, he would fix something I could stomach. He consoled me when the nausea hit and asked if there was anything he could do afterwards. And he's been to every single doctors' appointment (including the initial blood draw, counseling, and to hear the heart beat). He's been more gentle and patient with me than I ever expected. Yet, I never felt coddled: he encourages me to stand up straight when my hips shift forward too much, to put on my own shoes (even if it makes me grunt), to always keep walking, and in general just make sure I'm comfortable while still encouraging me to do things that I can do for myself. He always says hi to me and shows me love, and sometimes he says hi to the baby for good measure. Today he said "we both love you" which I think is the first time I've heard that. I've said it a few times myself, along with lessons as to what this is and what that is (rabbit, squirrel, bird), but I hadn't heard him say it. Sigh. What a sweetheart.

Clinton/Obama...
Okay, seriously. Our newspeople must be dumber than they look.
This whole Clinton/Obama thing they're "making" an issue out of... would one candidate's backers support the other?
If you support one candidate who's for health care for 'all Americans' -- no matter what the plan,
for drawing troops out of Iraq on an advanced timetable, and etc. which both of them did:
Why on GOD'S GREEN EARTH would you then back the candidate from the opposite party?
It's like saying, oh I loved all YOUR ideas, but even though your competitors are 98.9% the same, I think I'll change horses right now and go for ALL THE COMPLETELY OPPOSITE ideas. Just for the flipping heck of it.
Umm.. WHY would anyone do that?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

What's up with tv shows?
okay, some of my favorite shows have given us humdingers in the past, but seriously?
Ghost Whisperer .. Professor Payne (the wacky academic spook guru who helps the whisperer figure out her clues).. says.. "Weird there are 6 of us, but only 5 shadows"...
umm, does that mean that HE is dead? Cause how else could he know how many people there were? HE can't SEE ghosts... or is there something else spooky going on?
Bones.. Okay, so first of all they say that Booth (hot cop with chemistry galore with the title character) is dead, but of course he isn't, the FBI just used it as a draw out to finally capture his nemesis.. fine
but seriously, ZACH (lovable geek who is clueless about life because he has spent so much time in a laboratory) is Gormogan's assistant and has helped to kill the people that the creepy serial kill cannibal dude eats. Seriously? I'm glad he's going to a mental ward but seriously? Him?
House...so House is the crazy, do it my way doctor that solves the mysteries and Wilson is his cancer-doctor sidekick friend who has bad luck in love. House gets drunk and calls Wilson for a ride home, and Wilson's new girlfriend shows up instead, there's a bus accident which House can't remember, and they end up treating her by jogging his memory with shock therapy, but of course she can't be saved.
Will Wilson ever get a break?

Housing stuff...
Today we went and looked at model homes nearby. On our way to one place, we found another so we stopped by. They had a beautiful kitchen (I believe I said something to the effect of the mothership was calling me home) in one model, but it's way out of our budget. The good news is that according to their literature and website, they can put any feature in any home, as long as it's not an 'addition' and it would just go in, that they could put it in a bigger home, smaller home, etc.
The other place had some nice stuff and some were definitely cheaper, one I liked a lot and it wasn't too bad, but of course it was a 'manufactured' home, and it had a big notice on the counter top about formaldehyde content (you know the stuff you pickle frogs in for science projects, aka the stuff that is in those Katrina trailers making the kids all sick, and our government is just telling them to 'open the windows')-- yeah, that stuff, so I decided that maybe that wasn't the way to go.
Tomorrow we're going to go look at a show home that's in the SW side of the city, there they are doing a giveaway for $150,000 towards a new home. Kind of like those things where you can use one of a thousand keys to try and unlock the car and if you do you win the car? Those sorts of things. I told hubby we had nothing to lose and what better way than to spend a Sunday afternoon than running by and seeing a gorgeous house?

Magazines Part #3
Well, I finally got a web-cancellation availability from one magazine I was subscribed to, with a block where I could write in why I was cancelling (and I did).
The other one never gave me that option, or a phone number of anything. Just increasingly rude letters. The last one said that they were concerned they they couldn't fulfill my magazine order because I hadn't "paid my obligation, for the continued subscription I had requested".
I took their stupid letter and wrote on the bottom and all over the back of it just what I thought of their stupid continuous service plan, told them that I would never be a subscriber or buy their magazines again UNLESS they discontinued this wasteful, ridiculous plan that asked for payment for another whole year before they'd even given me HALF of what I'd paid for yet. I told them they weren't fooling anyone and that if they'd simply sent one renewal with their final magazine I'd have paid up and been a continued customer, now though, they have an angry, unsatisfied customer out there spreading the word about their stupid plan and how it demeans their customers.
I don't know about you, but if I bought ANYTHING and paid for a year, I would not turn around pay for another whole year's worth after 6 months. That way, I would be paying double the price when they hadn't even delivered half the product. No way. Today, consumers have to be smart and outspoken about unfair business practices. That's the only way things are going to change.
I stood up. How have you stood up to corporate greed, unfair practices, or ridiculous rules?

pepsi stuff
I'm one of those people that saves those codes from pepsi boxes.
So far, it has netted me free 14 song downloads, to give you an idea of
my eclectic taste in music, here they are:
1. If I had a million dollars by Barenaked Ladies
2. Drinkin' my baby goodbye by the Charlie Daniels Band
3. You never even called me by my name by David Allan Coe
4. One Piece at a Time by Johnny Cash
5. He Walked on Water by Randy Travis
6. The Devil went down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band
7. The Rose by Conway Twitty
8. International Harvester by Craig Morgan
9. American Pie by Don McLean
10. Famous in a Small Town by Miranda Lambert
11. Dance Little Jean by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
12. You can call me Al by Paul Simon
13. Black Betty by Ram Jam
14. It's still rock and roll to me by Billy Joel
Okay, so maybe not as varied as I'd thought, but I certainly had a good time perusing songs and deciding what to download.
Songs I didnt download but should have:
Paint me a Birmingham by Tracy Lawrence
Stand by me by Ben E. King
Lean on me by Bill Withers

Land, ho!...
Last night we went with a realtor to look at some properties about a half hour outside of the city. They would be close to my husband's work.
One of them was 10 acres of straight cornfield, kind of umm, NOT good for putting a house on.
The other was part field and part creek/pasture/treeline.
There was enough room to put a house of course in just about any spot, but the deal breaker is probably the cost, land is expensive and even that far outside of town, sellers are 'worried' that someone is going to build a development, so that they'd get 'gypped' out of their money, so they put exhorbitant prices on the land.
Which stinks when all you want is a little plot of land to put a house on, maybe raise a cow to put in the freezer, and let your kids know the freedom that you knew as a kid.
Sigh. Well, there's plenty of time, I suppose, so we'll just have to keep looking.

Really?...
Okay, so there's this bobcat (diggy thing) tractor sitting by a house and connected to it are these red tapes that connect to the house and surround a hole that the bobcat has been digging (obviously). The funny thing was, though, that the tape said "Dangerous, Do Not Enter"...
And I'm thinking to myself, well, really the only people that would need the tape are the ones not old enough to read it...
What do you think about that?

Fun Monday..
I missed fun monday for the first time in forever today. I just don't have the gumption to get through it after my first day back at work.
I'm an assistant's assistant is basically how it seems. I'm doing a lot of unpacking and organization of supply cabinets, hanging up signs, putting dry erase markers in conference rooms, sorting stuff, etc etc. They just moved to a new office. I was on my feet a lot of the day and finally had to sit, cowboy boots are meant for walking or riding, not standing still sorting itty bitty pieces of paper.
It will all be worth it when my truck is paid off! Yeah!
Sigh!

My husband has a date, and it's not with me...
Okay, so that's a lie, he's going out with his buddy from work. I'm SO GLAD he has a friend. Okay, he has friends they just don't live here. So, really I'm glad he has a friend he can do stuff with, like go and watch the Iron Man movie.
Then his buddy asked about going out to dinner, so I suggested eating here instead (why, right?) I don't know, maybe because I want to show off for his friend, see, I'm a good wife, I can cook, be charming, etc. Maybe because he seems to really be a nice guy, his fiance is on the east coast and I figure that he's lonely. Bachelor living probably doesnt allow for homemade lasagna.
Oh yeah, he's getting my lasagna. He has no idea what he's in for. In my experience most people think that 'out of a box' is homemade. Not me. The sauce takes an hour. It takes a while to put together with all the layers too, so I made the sauce last night and then cooked the noodles, shredded the cheese and stirred together the 'innards' today. Broken down like that, it wasn't a big task. I'm going to cook green beans, I've got a loaf of garlic bread ready to be buttered and double-garlicked, and will find out if they want salad when my hubby calls after they are out of the movie.
I AM a good wife. I'm also a bit of a show-off when it comes to hospitality. I can't help it. I've been preparing for this my whole life. What you didn't read my post on all the women that have gone before me? I have beer chilling, tea made, and 2 kinds of soda. If all else fails, there's always water.

Hi ho, Hi ho, part deux
I go off to work on Monday. Boy that was fast. I was just in there earlier this week. I turned down several offers before one came across that was close to my hubby's office, so we can carpool. It's only for a month, but hey, it's better than nothing! It won't cost us any more in fuel than it already does and we'll be making more money. Rock on! Yeah! Woohoo!!

Here socks... Here socks...
Does anyone know where I can find knee-high socks? I had a few pair that I wore with my 'cowboy' boots, but they all have worn out in the last 2 years. I went back to try and find some more, and where I got them (WalMart) doesnt carry them anymore. I've looked in like 5 stores. I've also looked in KMart and Target. No dice.
Also have you noticed that even 'little bitty' kids dont have 'real' socks anymore? just the fake-out socks that 'dont show' with sneakers.. umm what's wrong with wearing socks, people? Are they that 'gross' that no one (even kids) should have to see them on each other?
Anyway, I digress. I do need some socks because none of the 'regular' socks are tall enough, even boot socks aren't tall enough and I want to wear my boots!
Also, I've looked in the boys and girls departments (either would work as I wear a size 5.5 shoe and socks that would fit most any 8-12 year old would fit me)... but no luck, not even in boys baseball socks. Can't seem to find any of those either which was my fallback.
Any ideas?

May Poetic License
Click over on Pensieve to join! Here's the rules: They are four lines long. The first and second lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. The first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person. A clerihew should be funny. As far as theme, let's go with May celebrations--OF COURSE you know about Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day and Memorial Day, but did you also know May celebrates Asparagus Month, National Bar-B-Que Month, National Hamburger Month and National Mental Health Month?
I asked my husband Matthew,
Would you like to barbeque?
He said with a smile,
"after while crocodile."

Job possibilities...
For my own reasons, I'm preferring to work 'temporary' assignments lately. Life is just too unpredictable to get tied to a job right now. Nuff said. Anyway, I was frustrated because I hadn't heard back from Office Team. No more. I had an interview and testing with them yesterday, and I've had 3 job offers before 24 hours had passed. How you like them apples?
This is NOT a paid post. Seriously. Three offers so far and the day is not over yet. For various reasons (job too far away or weird hours) I haven't taken any of the 3, but that's okay. They consider me (get this) a "stud" because I have such awesome test scores. How cool is that? So they're 'pimping' me out to everyone that calls them for temps. These people are efficient and go-getters. I would work for them if I had the credentials. Aweseome.
I have no doubts that something with enough $$ to make driving a second vehicle worth it will come up very soon.
Anyway, toodles. I'm having an awesome day!

Distance Learning...
Have you ever wondered about taking college courses from home? I have. Whether it's Marketing Courses to promote a side business you have or entrepreneurship classes to launch a business, almost everyone can benefit from learning at home. Not only do you have the comfort of your own living room, and pajamas, but you also save time, money and of course a little effort in driving and parking and hiking to a classroom.
This type of learning is ideally suited to someone who is interested in changing careers, wants to move up the ladder, so to speak, but does not have the day time hours to invest in classes and wants to pursue their interests on their own time, someone who has family commitments that keep them from dropping everything and heading to class, or even if you just like to study outdoors!
Having been to a four year university, and also having been employed by one, and also a small four year college, I think that online learning, especially distance learning is the wave of the future. It simply seems to cost too much to keep food, shelter, and varied activities going to keep those feisty eighteen year olds out of trouble, and costs keep going up every year. Why should you pay exorbitant fees for Friday night parties you can't attend, when you could be paying just for what you need, your classes and that's that? What if you could skip all that and do your homework when you felt like it, around your work schedule, your baby's nap time, or your teenager borrowing your car to go out every night?
We have a Kaplan here in Cedar Rapids, and they focus only on today's hottest trends in employment: business, health care, and technology related fields. What could be better than a degree in one of the 'now' fields? Kaplan is a worldwide company with an online higher education division in the UK as well. I'm sure my friends over in that area of the world can attest to the good of higher education as much as I can!

Barefoot flooring...
I have to say that my favorite thing in the world is going barefoot. I'd prefer to do it on plush carpet more than anything. Of course, I would not turn away some warm hardwood or sticky linoleum either. I just love being barefoot. Inside, outside, as long as it's a clean, warm surface, I love it. Of course, I love anything that reminds me of being a kid. Warm flooring reminds me of being at home with the sun shining on the various flooring in my folks' house. Ahh, home.

Fun Monday... I need a Hero!...
Kitten is hosting Fun Monday this week! Her assignment is this: Our assignment for this week is…Tell me about the Super Hero in your life. Not from TV, but anyone that has been or is in your life that you have really looked up to or has made a impact on your life. It can one or many. You can share pictures if you like. Just have fun with it.
I would have to say the women in my family that went before me. Let's face it, the men have it easy. The women? Well they work, have kids, go back to work, keep up the house with no help, then when the kids are gone they take care of ailing family members, volunteer, take in grandkids, organize parties, and do everything they did before. Amazing.
I've learned a lot without even realizing it from my female family members. I have an aunt who took us in for a vacation with her grandkids (wide age range in my mom's siblings) and always had about 3 or 4 kinds of soda and ice cream available.
My mom? Well who can list all the awesome things about her? Not me, it would take way too long. Let's just say she's awesome and leave it at that.
I have an aunt who would buy extra food if it was on sale, and when her pantry was full, she'd tuck it in other places. She always makes way too much food and it's all good.
My grandmother would always just pick up some stuff, random stuff and bring it with her when she visited. Loaves of bread, bunches of bananas, just little things to round out a meal and feed us hungry kids who had bottomless stomachs.
I have another aunt who sent us random packages, granted, not very often, but sometimes a treat would show up in the mail.
As for me? I always get extra treats when someone comes over, have a full pantry, make way too much food when a little would do, never go anywhere empty handed, and I've been known to save soup labels and egg cartons for my nieces and nephews school, they always get a birthday card with a little something in it, usually with a happy face sticker and sent TO THEM so they have mail to open, and though I haven't sent a bunch of packages, I have shown up with cupcakes just because it's saint patrick's day, or packed my purse full of candy for them to have a nibble between church and lunch. There's also always something interesting like a peppermint or piece of gum for them to have to keep their little brains occupied when the sermon gets too long. And guaranteed whoever sits by me eventually gets into an 'animal drawing' contest on the back of the bulletin.
Basically? I think all the women in my family are awesome, sometimes just for one thing, or sometimes for a whole host of things. Really, though? I'm just glad that I've picked up some of their habits, because I think if I think they're awesome, then other people do too.

Happy Cinco De Mayo...
My hubby and I went to Carlos O'Kelley's tonight. Mostly because he wanted to try it and neither of us had eaten there OR wanted to cook.
I have to say, I prefer the hometown fajitas over theirs. Just no substance, no depth of flavor to the chicken. Sigh. Unfortunately, we're about 3 hours from the closest hometown place we enjoy. So for now, we suffer. I will give them one thing though, their salsa was as close to the hometown place as I have found and that made my salsa starved belly very happy indeed!

For Whom the Belle Tolls...
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/05/03/filly-eight-belles-breaks-both-front-legs-euthanized-after-kent/
Eight Belles, the only filly (female) competitor in the Kentucky Derby this afternoon, slipped off to that great paddock in the sky shortly after finishing 2nd in the greatest sporting event that happens each year. Finishing 5 lengths behind the leader, she had almost that same distance between her and the 3rd place finisher, who was regarded more highly.
From a bloodline that included Unbridled and Unbridled's Song, the 17 hand filly (really big), had run 10 races, finishing in the top 3 in all but one race. Discounted by some because of her filly status, her owners scratched her out of the Kentucky Oaks (like the Derby but for female horses) and tried her against the boys. Did she win? No. Did she do very well in a tough field of 20 horses in what's considered the most grueling horse race every year? Yes. Did she beat 2 of the horses that had a whole lot of hype? You bet she did.
After crossing the finish line, she broke both front ankles and had to be euthanized on the track. I've seen it before, I'm afraid to say I'll see it again. Horse racing is a beautiful sport with speed, grace, and delicate, yet powerful animals to whom one injury means life or death, and in this case, death. Horses simply don't recover from broken legs. The fact that she broke both in one fell swoop was a tragedy.
I love Derby day, I love to see the colors flying and the horses move so gracefully and artfully down the dirt track. I hate to know that a beautiful animal is in pain. Now her work is done, now her time is to play in the pastures of the hereafter, joining others who went before, steam coming from her nostrils in the early morning light, sides moving in and out as she runs along a creekbed, hearing the call to the post as if in a dream, tossing her head and snorting as if to say, I'm in greener pastures now.

Landed...Whew...
Did you know you can watch arrivals in real time on your friendly local airport's website? No I didn't just sit here for 10 minutes refreshing every minute to see where the plane was and why it hadn't landed yet. It was 20. So there!
The point is, the plane is down and now it's a matter of disembarkment and travel time until he's home. Yeah!
Posted by Jill at 8:40 PM
Woohoo...
My hubby is on his way to the airport, where he'll just have to wait 4 more hours to get on a plane to come home. Woohoo!
I didn't do anything I set out to do except read 3 of the 4 books I got at the library. At least the dishes are caught up and the house is still as clean as it was last weekend when we did a big purge.
Now if I could just sneak in a nap before he gets home...

Argh...
Who needs sleep? I DID get an extra hour of sleep this morning and I tried to get a nap this afternoon. I did but woke up feeling kind of yucky, I think the storm front is moving faster than it's supposed to.
I filled out an online application for Office Team yesterday to try and get a job. They seem to be kind of slow like molasses. Oh well. Then I called back to tell them I was done (per their request) and even though the guy said I could talk to anyone they still hemmed and hawed and put me through to his voice mail. He wasn't even the first one to call me, another girl was. The third girl apparently didnt have time to deal with me, I don't know. Anyway, he was out of the office so whenever 'he' got back he would review my stuff and get back to me. Keep in mind I'd already submitted a resume. That should have told them enough as to if they had anything for me or not.
Anyway, now I'm kind of sitting by the phone waiting. I was going to go for a walk but I dont know if I need to be by my computer or not and it's been almost an hour. The guy ran out 'for a minute' -- gee, I guess I should have asked what time they thought he'd be back.
I guess maybe the temp arena is slow this time of year. Or it could be the economy. The REAL big problem is that it's probably going to cost half my salary in gas, okay, maybe 1/3, just to get there and home again. We could use the money, though, so I'm waiting, waiting, waiting...
