July reviews from St Kilda

The golden door by Emily Rodda - reviewed by Rosa

There are 3 books in this series. It’s about a boy called Rye who lives in a place called Weld. They have an enemy who is sending Skimmers, who are creatures that eat humans. People in Weld ask for volunteers for people to come and stop sending Skimmers. Rye’s brother Dirk goes to look for enemies and is gone for a while and his mum gets a letter saying he is dead, but he isn’t. Rye and a girl go to look for his brother. The king Olt, king of Oltan, the place where the bad people live, needs to kill people every 7 years so he can live.

Rated:  4 reallys

Percy Jackson and the last Olympian – the last of the series of 5 books by Rick Riordan - reviewed by Netta

This is an overview of the whole series. The Percy Jackson series is about the son of Poseidon who is one of the 3 major gods and he goes with his friends Grover Underwood, who is a satyr, and Annabeth Chase who is a demigod like Percy. Some of their adventures include going through a sea of monsters, finding Zeus’ lost lightning bolt, battle of the labyrinth, fighting Kronos, lord of time. The whole series is based on Greek myths and turned into an action adventure series. Really good.

Rated:  5 reallys – "better than Harry Potter which is saying something big because Harry Potter is one of the best series in my opinion!"

The great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson (who also wrote the Bridge to Terabithia) - reviewed by Linda

Gilly is an orphan and she gets fostered and a lot of these experiences don’t work out. Gilly becomes very sad inside but expresses it by being very angry and badly behaved. She swears a lot, she answers back to her teacher and she is rude to her foster parents. Finally she is fostered by a woman who sees through her rudeness and bad behaviour and there is a happy outcome.
