Mr. Robin Chestnut visited SSES to read to the Grade 1&2 classes for I Love to Read month last week.  He works for the local Express newspaper.  Mr. Chestnut showed us our picture on the front of the Express!  He talked about different types of reading and why reading was so important in his job.  It was also the 100th Day of School, so the room was filled with 100 Day Superheroes!

Compost Soup!

Over the past few weeks, Mrs. Chapnick has been visiting the Grade 1&2 classes to make Compost Soup!  We chopped potatoes, celery, carrots, sweet potatoes, and even onions!  All of the peels that would normally go into the compost pail, went into a cheese cloth and were used to flavor the soup.  The peels have many nutrients and vitamins in them!  The smell of the delicious soup filled the halls and was enjoyed by many.  It truly was tasty and delicious!!!!

Soup Facts: The word soup comes from Sanskrit as in su and po which means good nutrition.
It is also derived from the early word of sop or sup when a broth was poured over a slice of bread.  You can eat soup and drink it!
Americans eat 10 billion bowls of soup each year
Different cultures and places have their ‘own’ soup
         Ex. New England- chowder
               Spain- gazpacho
               Russia- borscht
               Italy- minestrone
France- French Onion and Broth (Pot-ou- feu)
               Chinese- Won Ton
Soup is a part of life in sedentary cultures and travelling cultures, for rich or poor, and for the healthy or sick

Mr. Cuthbert visits Room 113

Today, Mr. Cuthbert visited our classroom.  He loves Science as much as we do!!!  He taught us three types of Science...Chemistry, Physics and Biology.  He showed us experiments that we can try at home or at school.  If we do Science at home, we need our parents' permission and goggles...safety first!  Mr. Cuthbert told us that Science always asks questions ~ we love to wonder about things and discover the world around us.  We can't wait to try some of these experiments next week during Explorations.

Mr. Cuthbert showed us Science.  He made an egg fit into a bottle.  He did an explosion.    The explosion popped really high.  He showed us the jet balloon.  The balloon went on a string.  The balloon one was funny!  I really liked the balloon one, it was my favorite.  I really want to try the balloon one!!!

Science is fun!  We learned Science with Mr. Cuthbert.  We did Science Experiments.  We did eggs, fire and explosion experiments.  At the beginning I made a paper clip float on the water.  It was easy peasy lemon squeezy!  I LOVE Science experiments!  Everyone in the world loves Science experiments.  Next week, we will do the experiments ourselves.  It will be really cool.

Exploring Structures Room 129

written by Hunter and Noah

Last week Mrs. Poloski put out things that made us think about houses.  There were colour samples, house design books, door and shingle samples and things to draw with.  We used graph paper to create our dream houses.  They could be anything you wanted them to be.  We were learning Math!  You need to use multiplication to figure out the area of a room.  Hunter put a ginormous pool and bedroom in her dream house and Noah had an animal room in his house.  To get started on building our structures from around the world, we watched videos and looked at different pictures.  We took virtual field trips to different places around the world.  We had many pictures of different structures to help inspire our building.  We used blocks, clay, Jenga blocks, recycled materials, string, popsicle sticks and plasticine.  We had to figure out the amount of materials that we needed and we also needed to see if the materials were stable enough.  It took many tries to get just the right structure and to make the materials balance.  We wrote about our structures in our documentation books.  Each of us had pictures of our structures, information about the place and how we built the structure.  We got to build miniature versions of different structures from around the world, it made structures so interesting!
Noah would like to visit the Eiffel Tower in Paris someday and Hunter would like to visit the Skylon Tower in Niagra Falls.
