WHARTON RECEPTION

Brief recap from my end. Aregon and I made it to Wharton West campus just in the nick of time (my fault..Completely). After meeting up, Aregon transformed himself into a newyork cabbie  for the next half hour..while I clutched on for dear life! :)   j/k

Aregon has already put down his thoughts on his blog, and I totally agree with all of his observations. Couple more:
  • I saw some people I went to undergrad with, which allayed some of my fears of being too old for an MBA!! I am still in the game..phew! Wharton does attact a slightly more mature crowd, both in terms of additional graduate degrees and work experience.
  • Too many alums were working at Genentech..whats up with that?
  • I loved the chairs they had at the reception..can I order one for my office?
  • Met an alum who assured me that being non-traditional (i.e., Non strategy consulting, I-banking or IT) was actually a plus and that it would help me in defining as well as differentiating myself from the other set of strong applicants.
  • Committment to applicants: I may be biased, but I feel Wharton really does a very good job of marketing itself to applicants (through its website, receptions like these, etc). The school really makes itself accessible to everybody, rather than portraying exclusivity and aloof-ness. That is amazing, isnt that what B-school is supposed to be teaching you anyway?

Great reception.. looking forward to seeing the school in person now!

Kellogg and more...

I have been out of blogging, because I am moving apartments and have been out of internet access. I have been seen walking around my apartment looking for a "weak" signal on the wireless networks from my neighbors. No such luck either :)

I worked on Kellogg-1 essay this weekend. The issue of two pages double-spaced bothers me. I have about 1100 words and after reducing font to 10 pt and spacing to 0.5", i still couldn't get it to fit in two pages (I am one paragraph too long). Fellow applicants - any creative ideas? Oh, and I have cut all the extra fat..i guess I just have a bigger story to tell.

Sherlock Holmes Posted by Hello

I watched some good old "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" last week, starring Jeremy Brett. I believe this was an old British TV mini-series. In my mind, Jeremy Brett IS Holmes, just like for some people Sean Connery IS BOND. Absolutely fascinating screenplay, I highly recommend these (which I borrowed from Netflix, cant get these at the local Blockbuster :)), for the Homes fans everywhere.

Blah-Blah-Blah Blair

I was watching a CSPAN telecast of British Prime Minister Blair in front of the House of Commons liaison Committee. I can't remember if I have ever got sick of watching a politician spew out rhetoric diplomatic garbage in response to straightforward questions (and believe me, I come from a country full of corrupt politicians). But this was one such time.

Blair was repeatedly asked about why he led the country into a war in Iraq (and continues to do so), what was the link between war on terrorism and Iraq, what tangible benefits has the association with US yielded Britain, and so on. Blair's answer to all these questions was simply "UK needs US as an ally, and we have the same ideologies, hence blah blah blah".

Come on Blair, you need to justify better than that... How about some numbers? Estimated Government contracts, and so on...

Britchick..What are normal people's perceptions of Blair? He seems to have some serious leadership-deficiency syndrome.

Kites rise highest against the wind -- not with it.
--Sir Winston Churchill

Something personal happened to me which has almost made me give up my entire MBA plans. I cannot tell the details on my blog but it has the potential to kind of messing up my B-school plans. I was devastated on Saturday. All I can say is that it was not a good gift for the 4th of July weekend.

However, I woke up with a new resolve on Sunday and decided to apply anyway. I will give it my best shot and work things as I go along. I have the full support of my wife and thats all that matters.

The little issue resolved, I am back on track ....
