Poor Singapore

Tourists wouldnt be too glad if they are visiting Singapore this period because Singapore is badly hit by dengue fever (we have crossed the 10000 mark, with 2 fatalities) and now haze, which is caused by Indonesia's periodic slash and burn. The PSI (Pollutions Standard Index) has reached a new high at 321 yesterday at 9pm local time.  Singapore's beautiful skyline is shrouded by this haze. Somehow it reminded me of Gardens by the Bay's cloud forest. So put on your mask, if not, cover your nose and mouth with anything so that you do not inhale these deadly air particles. Even though I know my 3 ply mask isnt effective, at least it beats having no protection at all.

Oh yes, I am donning a new haircut yet again! It kind of resembles Edna Mode's or Velma's (Scooby Doo)   hairstyle though. Haha.
My fren says I am one of the few with round faces who can carry off short hairstyles, so yes to short hair!

Fancy a slice of watermelon to quench your thirst amidst this sweltering heat?

Haha.. this is just one of my fabulous buys during this Great Singapore Sale. I got this lovely bag from H&M during JEM's opening last saturday. Yes you heard me, I am one of the 10 000 people who visited JEM on its opening day. I beat through throngs of people just to navigate my way through. I set my eye on this piece ($19.90) because it is shaped like a watermelon, my favourite fruit! Another reason is it is made of those straw-like material, another of my favourites! I remember I did post an entry sharing my collection of straw bags. You can use it two ways, either as a sling bag (it comes with a detachable strap), or as a clutch. The latter is my thing. Visit JEM if you havent, although it is nothing fanciful to me. Only two shops catch my interest: H&M and Laneige. There are plenty of eateries around so if you are looking for a new food place, head in there soon!

Dragon Boat Festival

This is the first time the House of Toks are all geared up for the Dragon Boat Festival, even eldest sister and brother in law came over to assist with the dumpling preparation! It is quite a heartwarming sight because it is rare for all of us to be so united and to be at home together. I wrapped 3 dumplings! But they really look odd shaped. Haha. Nevermind la, as long as the taste is there, looks arent anything! Mom woke up at 630 am just to prepare these dumplings. Preparing these dumplings is no easy feat: wash the leaves, soak and fry the ingredients, wrap and finally boil and them for hours. Behind the scenes:

The bamboo leaves for wrapping the dumplings.

The filing which consists of chinese mushrooms, chestnuts and meat. In this case it's pork. Mom made chicken ones too! I am proud of her cuz she is the only one who makes a variety of dumplings: red bean ones, chicken ones, conventional pork ones, nonya ones (white coloured, my fav!) and the tiny yellow ones that you eat with sugar or honey. This explains how tedious it is to make your own dumplings. However, you  have to agree that it somehow feels nicer to eat home made dumplings.
The glutinous rice. This is stir fried with soy sauce.
Yellow rice for the yellow coloured dumplings aka jianshui zongzi
The hardworking family at work. Brother in law is exceptionally excited cuz it is his first time making dumplings. He is the one who asked eldest sis to learn this art of dumpling making because he hopes we can pass this special recipe of mom down the family line next time. Enough said, this is one nice guy! Good catch, sister. Frankly speaking, this is the first time I see how energetic he is! He reached our house at 6 am just for this! 5 stars for effort.

Whose hands are these? Not mine! I am the camera man leh. This is one artistic shot. Haha.
This huge pot for cooking the dumplings. We only use it once a year for this special occasion.
Hehe. My masterpiece. Cute right.
This is one tiny dumpling with little filling. I was too stingy! Haha.
The best beverage to go with rice dumplings would be green tea, in my opinion as it somehow absorbs the oiliness of the dumplings and prevents your tummy from being bloated. Happy eating everyone, but eat in moderation because these dumplings are really fattening!

Gardens By The Bay: Tulipmania

Went to check out gardens by the bay for its Tulipmania exhibition as I figured that I wouldnt set foot in Europe during the blooming season in the near future. So there I was, trying to immerse myself in the feel of tulips. I secretly like to step into fields of tulips, being engulfed by these flowers, appearing like a tiny dwarf amidst the towering floral giants. It's just a fairytale fantasy of mine since young. Oops, too many Enid Blyton reads. Haha. It was supposed to be a one day event for me, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it turned out to be a two day event, which means we went back to the same place twice. However, I still didnt manage to conquer gardens because it was rushing business throughout the two days, which means i need to go back a THIRD time. I havent had the chance to see all the stuff in the outdoor gardens yet. Laugh if you want, but for us, we usually need twice the amount of time and double the amount of money before we get things done. It can be vexing when others can just enjoy everything in one date, one shot, but we cant. Alright, grievances aside, it wasnt that terrible an experience since the floral scene is always a pleasant sight to me. Plus, I get to see the Supertrees in action! That was what was enjoyable for the first night. It was just pure luck for us to be able to witness the trees with their flickering lights because it only happens on weekends and at two timings! So lucky us! I will upload the video of the supertrees later in this entry.

If you ask me if the two conservatories are worth visiting, I think you can skip the cloud forest if you are a flower lover like me. The cloud forest has no colours except green. To me, the main highlight of cloud forest is this manmade waterfall. I dun quite like the misty feel in there. It is indeed cooling though, another outing option for you to beat this sweltering heat. Flower dome is good enough for me so next time I will just head there! As there were too many photos taken during the course of two days, I decide to compile a few of them into collages.

I love the little flower on the cactus. Reminds me of this saying: thorn among the roses. Ha. Spot a pitcher plant in there! Try putting your hand in and see what happens. On a side note, do you see these grey spots between the square grids dancing about when you look at these few photo collages! Haha, it is a visual illusion. So fun!

Spotted this giant baby levitating! This is a permanent display at the gardens. It is amazing because this baby is merely supported by his hand! No strings attached at all.
Read this description and you will know what I meant.

More topiaries spotted along the way but I cant make out any of it. Are they animals? Monsters?
A bird or a man? Take your pick. It looks kind of like a parrot to me at some angle.
Resting on toadstools.
Supertrees in the day. I really love these trees.

 Bottletrees
Major disappointment (x1). I forgot to take a pic in these giant clogs even when I went back the second time! Even the ah ma which was featured in the newspaper took this shot! Sian. Next time dun make me angry please.
The ah mas look so cute in those clogs! Hmph. Pique with jealousy.

 More flowers.

This is my favourite photo of myself for the two days! See the cute windmill?
I love the yellow tulips the most, though I know it's bad to receive yellow flowers from others. Haha.

Didnt get to sit on this really nice chair because we had to queue to get in and we had no time for that. Mini disappointment (x1).
My favourite photo of us. A lady helped us with this pic.  I like this pic cuz my arms look decent plus my smile is alright, not too wide and I like the sunlight shining on my hair.
Ray ban sunglasses from sister. Think it's fake one! Haha.
Major disappointment (x2). I didnt get this paper tulip that was given to almost all patrons. Sad :(
I always love interactive corners, somemore it's art and craft! Picture credited to offsprings.blogspot.com
Cloud forest in the day. This is one good photo. Taken by me I think! Haha.
If you are planning to visit cloud forest, go in the evening so that you can witness it at night too. I think it is more beautiful at night.
Cloud forest at night. This is so much prettier right?

Playing who's who. Haha.. this made me laugh

This mystique cloud forest.
This was what captivated me and brought smiles to my face! These supertrees were spectacular! Once again, I am so proud to be a Singaporean, with a capital S. Yes, Singapore, you have one loyal citizen here.
This picture is nice because it appears as if there are photo filters and major editing done, but I swear, there's none! Pure and au naturel.
Resembling fireworks. Oh yes another bonus is we managed to catch fireworks! Something totally unplanned! We were actually leaving the place since it was already 9 plus at night. Couldnt take photos of them because they were hindered by the trees.

As promised, I will end off this entry with a video clip of the supertrees' awesome performance. Must thank OCBC for that because I think they are the ones behind this.  I muted the video and replaced it with one of my favourite songs by The Beatles. Might sound a little weird but it's much better than hearing our amusing conversation la! It's probably strange, but now looking back at the photos taken, the experience doesnt seem that bad as initially believed. Probably the supertrees and fireworks really did make up for it!
