Award of Merit
Monday, April 20, 2009
Merit: a praiseworthy quality: virtue. Character or conduct deserving reward, honor, or esteem ; also : achievement.
I am a wife, a mom and I scrapbook. In addition my hubby and I direct a youth choir and drama team.
http://www.freewebs.com/anactofpraise/parents.htm The team ministers in drama, human videos(acting out music), short sermons, choir, sign language, dance and flags. We have ministered as a team at our church, other churches , community venues, retirement homes
etc. We have taken this team for the past three years to a District Fine Arts Festival, and subsequently been good enough to be invited to a
National Fine Arts Festival each year. You have to make a certain score to qualify and this year, not only were we invited we were awarded the "Award of Merit" in ASL (American Sign Language) and choir! Oh, that means we had the highest score in each
category! I am so proud of our team! We worked so hard and it paid off! But I have to tell you about how crazy the weekend went...
First of all I should have known it was going to be crazy because the weather
forecasts were horrible! I had parents calling me the morning of our trip asking if we were still going. Reports were talking about snow storms, chains being required and roads potentially being closed. We made lots of calls and said we would turn around if we had to but we were going to go for it. (If you don't compete at Districts
FAF you can't get invited to Nationals.)
We had lots of people praying for our trip so we felt pretty confident, our plan was just to take our time. One of the kids could not leave until after school because of a concert. Our youth pastors wife had to work so they couldn't leave until later in the day. We arranged for them to give this student a ride and the rest of us went ahead in the morning. Things were smooth sailing at first...We stopped at a fast food place for lunch - no sign of snow. After lunch I began to feel sick. I ended up losing my lunch in the van! (I do not get car sick!) We had to pull over and I was so sick I did not want to leave that restroom!
45 minutes later my hubby is freaking out because of course it is now snowing- hard! He says we need to get back on the road, and I am saying no way I can't! So he says we either need to get back on the road before the road conditions get worse, we should turn around and go back home, or he could get me a hotel and I could rest and wait until the afternoon when the rest of our group comes through town. I chose option #3, there was no way I was getting back in that van with the way I felt!
It's a good thing I chose to stay because I didn't stop throwing up until 6:30PM! :O!!! That's when I realized that I had not heard from our youth pastor and his wife. Turns out they got stuck in a town about 40 minutes before reaching me, they closed the roads!!! Hubby and the team were stuck in scary, crazy weather! A drive that should have taken us 4 1/2 hours took them 9 1/2 hours! (Imagine me, by myself and no scrapbook supplies!:O!!)
The next morning the roads were still shut and the kids were in a panic because I wasn't there! Meanwhile I did not have my charger with me my phone was dead! I asked at the front desk if they had a charger - she had a whole box, none of which fit my phone. There was an Office Max across the street, I felt better so I decided to go buy a charger. I had to cross a major street and it was snowing, I pushed the button to cross, the light changed and something told me to wait. Thank God I did because as I'm standing there a car that was speeding sees the light and slams on his brakes! He spun in a circle right into the intersection! God always has my back!
As soon as I got back and plugged my phone in it rang, the roads had just opened back up! YAY! They were on their way to get me! The kids kept calling and the roads were still slick but not as bad as the day before! We were watching the clock and we got there just minutes before the team had to perform their sign language piece! I got there just in time to give them hugs and a very quick pep talk before they went on! They nailed it! (here is a pic of part of the team doing sign language - I can show this one because it's blurry, I don't want to show their faces online.)
Later they aced their choir number too! It was the best they had ever done! We are so proud of them! We knew we had done well enough to get an invite to Nationals and we were happy with that but we had no idea that we would be the #1 in both
categories making us the "Award of Merit" winners for our
district!
Whoo hoo! It is nice to be validated! Nationals are in Florida this year! I see a LOT of fundraisers in our future!!!It was a crazy weekend but totally worth it!
We missed the first nights services but the second night was amazing! The kids were ministered to and so were we! I didn't eat much the rest of the weekend!
LOL! I sure was thankful that God kept us all safe and that He chose to validate us in such a big way! Have a blessed night! (or day depending on when you are reading this!)

First scrapbook news!
Remember these?
These are just a few of my layouts that are on the
GCD Studios blog!
How cool is that? I am their first
spotlight! Go here to check it out!
http://gcdstudios.blogspot.com/2009/04/its-spotlight-time-rita-barakat.html?showComment=1239764760000#c8704072565856425451I totally stink at cards so I decided to enter a
card making challenge at
Scrapperrie. I figure with more practice I've got to get better right? Here are some that I made!
This last one is my favorite- I think I might have to make a layout with this paper! Love the colors!
Update: Those who were praying for my son, thank you so much. He has healed beautifully- I will not be posting any before or after pictures, there is a very large scar on his face. The boy that did this is facing criminal charges for assault. The DA offered him a deal, he did not take it so it is going to trial. It makes me sad for him because in an instant he made a
decision that he will have to live with for the rest of his life. I am so grateful that it was not my sons neck or eye- it was very close. We have talked about how close he came and as a young teen this was a huge reality check for him. It made him think about what is really important. Life is short. Let the people in your life know you love them everyday! Thanks for checking in!

Supplies for
todays LO is from the April kit "Hopscotch" from Vintage Plum. I love that grey patterned paper! The little
embellie was enhanced with glossy accents and
stickles! ( Two of my favorites!)
I had fun with the shape of this paper, it inspired the curved
journaling!
Baby girl loves her daddy and she loves pizza too! Her first word was PIZZA!
LOL!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------Funny story: Today I pick up my little guy from kindergarten and he says mom I have to show you something. He says there is something wrong with his socks and he thinks they're ruined. I say let me see. He pulls off his shoes and his socks looked like they are caked with poop and for a moment am horrified thinking how in the world did he get poop there! As I am pulling off the dirty socks little gold wrappers fall out! It was chocolate! His feet were covered in chocolate! I asked him why he put them in his socks? He said he had put the chocolate gold coins in his socks because he was saving them later! LOL! I am just relieved it was chocolate!
Thanks for stoppin' by!

Happy Easter! Part II
I hope that your Easter was wonderful! Ours was very good, different service for us - no pageant or choir but testimonies. It was very good, very moving. I did sing at both services and we came home to do the traditional egg hunt in the backyard. There was rain in the morning but it cleared up by noon. The kids had lots of fun and ate ALOT of candy!
Well I still have lots to do, school tomorrow and my week of challenges start tomorrow over at VP! Hope to see you there!

Just for fun!
If you didn’t know I am a Plum Hostess over at Vintage Plum and we rotate weekly. (This is Vintage Plum paper, part of the latest kit over at VP.) Next week is my turn so I’m thinking we need to have a little fun!
I like a challenge so starting on Monday April 13th I’m going to be giving lots of chances to win some RAK! “What’s RAK?” you ask? I’m glad you asked that question! It’s Random Acts of Kindness! (I'm new to all these terms so I always explain in case you didn't know!) So I’ve put together a little prize package – not that I’m rich but I am blessed! Wanna peak?
Here’s how it’s going to work; for a chance to win this RAK we are going to have a weeklong contest over at VP– there will be many opportunities so you are going to have to check the forum! (the link is
http://www.vintageplum.com/blog/ ) This contest will run from Monday April 13th - 19th! Every time you complete a challenge you get a chance to win! The tricky part is that the challenge can be under any forum category so you have to come find me! Hee hee! Kind of like “Hide and Seek”! I will announce the winner on Sunday night’s blog!
Thanks for stopping by! :)

Stay Little
Thursday, April 9, 2009
Yesterday my very sweet friend brought me some glimmer mists so of course I had to
try them! They are so pretty and went perfect with this
GCD Studios paper I had! (Chipboard letters are Heidi
Swapp.)
This is #14
sketch from 52 sketches 52 weeks. I used the glimmer mists on the
Prima flowers too! I wish you could see the fine glitter up close! SO Pretty! Originally I had planned to make this LO about how
baby girl dresses herself - but there will be plenty of
opportunity for that! It just struck me how cute and little she is, and how much fun she is having on a swing. So I ended up writing this...
If you can't read this click on the picture. I love this lace ribbon, the flowers and this paper was perfect! I used a marker to color her dress and headband and shoes to match! That was fun!
SO tomorrow I have a big fun planned, but it's a surprise and I can't announce it until then!
"Y'all come back now ya hear?" (Just imagine I'm from the south! Ha ha!) C U then!

Dollar store finds!
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
What can you do with a dollar store scrapbook? Yeah thats right I found this little book at a dollar store! How about this.....
I made this for a challange over at VP ( it had to be inspired from the movie "Twilight" - but really I made it for my oldest who will be a senior in high school next year. On the cover is a quote from her favorite series "Twilight" it says...
My daughter loves the character Alice and now that I am looking at this close up - I must be tired because I am cracking myself up thinking "senior" in this quote could mean another significant time in our lives! OK so I'm not a "senior" yet but when I get there maybe I'll make a book like this for me! LOL!
How about some detail? a little Prima bling and flowers! The brads are spare parts.
I love this paper underneath
I did rip out the center of the rose paper, rolled it back, inked it and burnt some of the edges. I would love to tell you the lines of these papers - but I've had these papers forever, before I started noticing who made what ect. Honestly I have no clue! They looked good together so I used them. I am not a paper snob! ANd I gave it to her tonight- she loves it! The quote made her laugh!

Winner!
Monday, April 6, 2009
Don't you love winning stuff? Well at over
GCD Studios I won these cool Epoxy stickers and chipboard pieces called
Caribbean Blues. I never expect to win and then you read it, and you have to read it again because you can't believe it's YOUR NAME!
LOL! Well that's always fun! I
received them last week and this is what I made with them! I love when something just comes together and I've had these pictures from last summer so...
I got this Fancy Pants
Transparent Clear cuts tabbed book at the scrapbook convention I went to a few weeks ago. The whole kit was $5.00! Gotta love those conventions! I also used We Are Memory Keepers foil, glitter, flock adhesive kit. Love that stuff - also was an amazing deal at the convention! I love the colors and the quality of the
GCD Studios products!
The paper is also from
GCD Studios - it has this sheen finish on it that's really hard to photograph but is really pretty. These are all pictures of the little ones having some summer fun in the backyard! And if you have this slide FYI don't do this if you ever want this back in your house again! The kids had a blast and it seemed like a good idea at the time but we couldn't get all the water out of the pieces of plastic!
Boys will be boys!
Kids and a hose- self
explanatory fun!
I love that little frame that came in the kit - I had to add it in here just for fun! Used some making memories rub
ons too. Baby girl is such a cutie!
There it is, summer and kids make for great little albums! Fun for all! And thanks again Heidi for my goodies!

So I made lots of fun stuff - some that I can show you and some that I can't (until a reveal at VP on the 10th!). But it will have to wait untill tommorrow when I can get some good picture in the daylight of what I've done! See you then!

Just OK is not enough...
Wednesday, April 1, 2009
This layout is from a sketch by Becky Fleck over at Pagemaps.com. The theme is "What's on your mind?" I love this idea because this song has really been on my mind lately. The song is called "Through the motions" by Matthew West.
My title for my layout is "OK is not enough."
These are the parts I chose to highlight. Being a mom and wife can by hard sometimes. My hubby and I also teach a youth drama/choir team, and I do get tired! When I hear this song it reminds me that I don't want to go through the motions and have to ask myself "What if I had given everything?"
When we talk with our kids or the youth we always tell them that whatever they do, they should always do their very best. God deserves nothing less and isn't the bottom line really about Him? It is to me. I surely do not pretend that I am perfect- I am not, far from it actually, but it gives me something to strive for. So here's a challenge for you, think about this song and your life, go listen to on you tube (it's really good!) or something so you can really hear what it's saying. Deep huh? LOL!
