Inception Summarised
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Ok, since I was perplexed by this movie when I first watched it on Saturday, I am going back to watch it tonight! This movie is intriguing and has been the talking point among many people over the past week or so. Here's a quick summary for you folks who still are a bit confused:

I hope after reading various synopses, reviews and interviews, and after watching it for the 2nd time today, I will be able to understand it better!

Ouch!
Monday, July 19, 2010

Finally had my final wisdom tooth removed today. It was causing me problems, so it had to go. Surgery was needed to extract the tooth, and boy i was scared. No doubt, I had been through surgery before for the past 3 wisdom teeth, but that was some 3 years back! I kinda forgot how the procedure would be like till they covered my eyes with cloth (as the light was very bright). Then came the LA. Dentist commented that I could stand the pain. Ha, coz I had been through it before! The numbing effect set in very quickly and a while later, the procedure began. When he started slicing my gum (or some part), I actually experienced a momentary blackout! I was surprised as i never felt such a way before. It happened twice somemore! Thankfully I didn't pass out. I think it must have been due to the impact on the nerves. Ok, so now at least I know how blacking out and fainting will feel like.

After much tugging and pulling, he got the tooth out (in perfect condition) and proceeded to stitch me up. While stitching me up, he started talking to his nurse about going on a date with his wife to watch the Louis Koo movie, Triple Tap and they went on and on about other movies like how the nurse liked Inception a lot and recommended him to watch it. I was so afraid the doctor would be distracted and stitch me up wrongly! Luckily all went well, and I would be going down on Friday to remove the stitches.

Bill came up to $950 including consumables; $650 was paid by Dad's Medisave and the rest had to be in cash. Crap. Private clinics are always so expensive! I bet it would have been cheaper if I had been refereed to the National Dental Centre by the polyclinic. But then again, who knows how long I would have to wait for an appointment?

Just thank God that I won't face any more wisdom teeth problems in future, but then again does that mean I have lost my wisdom?!

Post SEP Report Last Part

What I have learnt:

This exchange program certainly taught me independence. Sure, in army, I learnt to be independent too, but I could always fall back on my parents when we booked out on weekends. Over in Canada, I was all by myself. Thank God I was living with 3 other NUS Business School students as they were my pillars of support. We were there for each other whenever anyone was down or feeling troubled. I feel it is important to have someone you can really talk and relate to when you are away; otherwise you will definitely feel homesick easily.

One of the main reasons why people go on exchange is also to travel, and travel did we! Montreal had some very nice parks and open spaces where we had fun hanging around in the warmer months. Even in Winter, we were able to participate in their Winter carnival. And during Spring break (late February), we travelled to neighbouring cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls and Quebec City. The company we had while travelling around was unforgettable and the memories of the road trip will definitely remain. After the semester, I embarked on a month long holiday with a few other friends and travelled round the United States and the Canadian Rockies. It was just an exhilarating experience to visit the many different sights and take in the marvelous landscape that we can only see in pictures or movies back home in Singapore. I like planning for overseas trips, and for these spring breaks and end of semester trips, I did majority of the planning. It was certainly no easy feat, but I am glad that my friends and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

Tips and advice:

Clothing

You don’t really need long johns and thermal wear, especially if you are going during the summer semester, as the peak winter period is in January and February only. Initially, I wore long johns for the first couple of weeks, but gradually got acclimatized to the weather. Started to wear lesser layers out too! Just invest in a good, windproof down jacket. That should do the trick! Scarves are nice accessories to experiment with and gloves and earmuffs are a must to help you survive the biting cold wind.

Books

It would be good if you could purchase the textbooks in Singapore in advance. Don’t worry if the books you require are the US version; the international version sold in Singapore will be just as good, albeit with more chapters. You get to save at least 2-3 times if you buy your books in Singapore as the textbooks there are priced at CAD$100 and upwards!

Food

If you miss Singapore food, which I am sure you do, you don’t really have to bring those Prima Taste packets over as the Chinatown in Montreal sells similar flavor packets at a reasonable price. Trust me, you will be buying lots of that, especially if you don’t really know how to cook! My favourite place around school for lunch is at the food court along St. Catherine just next to Second Cup. It’s where the Dollarama is. There is a Thai stall called ‘Bangkok’ which attracts long queues during meal times as the food there is delicious and value for money. Note that food court prices start from CAD$6 for a basic plate of noodles or rice.

Tim Hortons has got be a favourite place to grab a snack or a drink among Singaporeans and locals alike. The drinks are cheap and most importantly, taste good! Much more worth your money compared to Starbucks or Second Cup. Tip: the French Vanilla and Iced Cappuccino is to die for! Oh, not to forget the Timbits! One can easily finish 10 of the delightful mini donut munchkins!

Other Tips:

Don’t forget to get an official document that states your current Canadian address (can be a letter of admission from the school, a bank letter) before applying for the OPUS student card (monthly transport pass cost CAD38.50 for unlimited use of metro and bus. This will definitely prove to be handy). This document is compulsory; the transport officials will refuse your application otherwise.

Open a bank account and get a credit or debit card! This will definitely prove useful when travelling around the US and/or Canada.

Get a small luggage weigher before you leave Singapore. It will come in handy when you need to weigh your two pieces of luggage when you return back to Singapore. Trust me, you will definitely have to throw some stuff away if you do not want to ship things back. Otherwise, it costs about CAD 17 to purchase one in Montreal.

Don’t bother bringing foolscap paper, files or punchers. The paper they use here is letter size (not A4) so the files and punchers won’t work. Plus, the foolscap size is different too. Anyway, you can get all your stationery items from Dollarama. Bring along pens and refills and highlighters though, in case you can’t find your favourite brands in Canada.

Don’t forget to visit the tourist attractions during the earlier part of the semester when you are not so busy with projects and school. Some of us kept delaying outings to visit the tourist attractions, resulting in them not seeing the famous sights around Montreal! Must sees include: Mont Royal Park, Olympic Stadium, Botanic Gardens, Notre Dame Cathedral, St. Joseph’s Oratory and a walk around the Old Port. After all, time really does pass by rather quickly, and before you know it, you are on your way back home!

Underrated Mariah Carey Songs
Friday, July 16, 2010

Ok, those who know me will know that I am a big Mariah Carey fan. I mean her songs are like so amazing, what with her 8 octave vocal range and vocal acrobatics. Plus, she writes her own songs! Unlike Whitney crackhead. Here is my list of underrated Mariah Carey songs:

All I've Ever Wanted from her 1993 Music Box Album

Never Forget You from the same Music Box Album

Forever from her 1995 Daydream Album

Lead the Way from her 2001 Glitter album. This song features her longest vocal run!

Never Too Far/Hero Medley from her 2001 Glitter album

Betcha Gonna Know from her 2009 Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Album

Standing O from the same Memoirs album

Bubble Tea update
Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Tried Eskimo Milk Tea at Market Street Carpark today. No queue! At first was worried since Geri said lunchtime got long queue. I was there slightly before 12pm i guess? Ordered and got mine in a jiffy. Had the milk tea (less sugar) with mini pearls. The tea was thick and fragrant, but i found the pearls a tad too small and chewy. Still prefer Koi's pearls. But this will make a good alternative since the queue is not as long as Koi's! The less sugar version already tasted quite sweet; I can't imagine how the regular version (100% sugar) would taste like!

***

Went to the dentist today. Bad news. My worst fears have come true. I had been experiencing some discomfort in my top left jaw while I was in Canada and I suspected it was due to my wisdom tooth. Yes, my last remaining wisdom tooth, which I hadn't removed while I was in NS coz at that time, it was not causing any problem. However, now it seems like some tiny food particles can get trapped in a small opening that causes the gum area to be inflamed, which causes the on-off discomfort when I open my mouth wide to chew or when I yawn. Crap. The dentist says if I opt to remove it, surgery may be required. They would try normal extraction first, but if that doesn't work out, surgery would be the other only alternative. DAMN. Scared leh. Still can remember the traumatic experience last time when I removed the wisdom teeth via surgery. The post extraction discomfort, profuse bleeding that I thought I was losing excessive amounts of blood - was so scared that I went to the neighbourhood dentist to check if anything was wrong. And the worst part was not being able to eat proper food and do rigorous exercise like running.

I am already 70% sure I am gonna have this tooth removed. Cause now is the best time to do it as I am not working, and taking MC for 1 week won't affect anything. I figured 19th July would be ideal (the day after the SPH performance) and 1 week before NS ICT. I don't wanna experience more problems the older I get!!

Lesson learnt: For guys, please remove ALL your wisdom teeth when you are in NS! Whether they are causing you problems at that time or not! It's FREE and you get 1 week MC per surgery! So if you remove each tooth 1 by 1, you get up to 4 weeks MC! Muahahaha. Best of all, you don't have to pay $600-900 to remove EACH tooth as the government takes care of everything! Heed my advice, or regret it later!!

The Bubble hasn't burst

Or rather it burst then revived again. I am talking about Bubble Tea of course. Just had the sudden urge to try Each-a-Cup and Koi. It was the first time i tried from both brands. Was at Ion and bought Champagne Grape Ice Blend. $1.90. Pearls were quite nice. Definitely better than Sweet Talk. And didn't have to wait long - 1-2mins max?

Afternoon went to Parkway to get A*Mei's DVD at Popular. Got a free poster! The biggest poster i ever received/owned before!! Since Koi was there, I queued up for their Milk Tea, less sugar. Didn't wait long either Prob 5 minutes? I guess I was lucky. Heard people can queue for up to 20-30mins for bubble tea!! The milk tea was very nice, and pearls very soft too. But i felt there were too many pearls. Couldn't really enjoy the milk tea on its own without sucking the pearls up too.

Tmr will be trying Eskimo Milk Tea at Market Street that Geri recommended. Hopefully the queue won't be too long!
