Youths urged to consider career in energy sector with new degree

SINGAPORE: The Energy Market Authority (EMA) is introducing a dedicated power engineering course next year to train professional power engineers in Singapore.

The two-year full-time course is a collaboration between the Singapore Institute of Technology and Newcastle University, and targets diploma holders.

The programme aims to train specialised power engineers, who will work in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Singapore.

The new course is scheduled to start in September next year.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Trade and Industry Minister S Iswaran made the announcement at an energy dialogue with some 170 tertiary students on Wednesday.

He said: "We know that in the next five to ten years there will be opportunities for new entrants to the market -- first because of growth in the sector, second because of people who are retiring.

"Engineering in particular is the mainstay of this sector, both in terms of its maintenance and operations, but also in terms of future innovation possibilities. You need that engineering and science foundation."

EMA said the power sector hires some 4,600 people today.

The authorities project that the sector will need 2,400 more technical professionals over the next 10 years.

EMA said the median age of the technical workforce in the power sector is 48 years, and less than 15 per cent is 35 years old or under.

During the dialogue, the students were asked in a snap poll if they were keen on a career in the energy sector.

Forty-three per cent of the students said "Yes", followed by 40 per cent who said, "It depends" while 17 per cent said "No".

But the students expressed keen interest in renewable energy, such as solar and wind power.

Half of the students said clean energy is the most compelling energy sector for a career.

This is far ahead of oil and gas, which was picked by less than 10 per cent of students.

Study finds link between asthma in children and eating fish


Updated 12:00 PM Nov 14, 2012NEW YORK - Among thousands of Dutch children included in a new study, those who first ate fish between the ages of six months and one year had a lower risk of developing asthma-like symptoms later on than babies introduced to fish before six months of age or after their first birthdays.

"They found it was only protective between six and 12 months. That would make reasonable sense because that's when the immune system is getting educated," Dr Kinane said.

On 14th June 2012, first time in my life I had change a 'blasted' tyre. =(

Here I am writing down just in case I met with another similar case or met with a situation to dirty my arms and legs again. Always drive with care, remove all the foreign objects around your vehicle that will be your potential hazards when you drive off. Caused I ran through the pallet plank of wood and assume that I can "siam" that but didn't. =(

1) Find out the ways to take out your spare wheel. Prepare some of the equipments: lifting jack, Z-spanner, long black rod to spin the joint to lift up the jack. and alot of patience and strength.
2) Understand how you take out your spare tyre, some maybe just at the boot of car, below the seat but some goods vehicle is quite special because it is hanging below the vehicle and you need to spin the pulley until the wheel hits the ground with a rod and then able to take the wheel. Then need to spin the pulley back up else when you drive off with the thing is still dangling and rubbing on the road.
3) Firstly, loosen the nuts (until able to turn it with ur fingers) that is attached to the punctured/ flat tyre. Next, find a location that is the backbone with very good support from the chassis as the point to jack up the vehicle.
4) Jack up the vehicle which can takes super long time and lots of strength until the wheel is away from the ground.
5) Loosen the nuts from the punctured wheel all the way and take out the wheel. Replace with the spare tyre,  you may not be able to lift it so get someone to help because you need to align the screwholes with the spare wheel rims.
6) The tightening part is very tricky, you need to tighten in a diagonal format. You cannot follow clockwise to screw back the nuts as it will still be loose. So example, when u tighten the nut at 10'Oclock, you need to tighten the next one at 4'oclock, then 1 oclock, 7 oclock etc.
7) Get the spare tyre change as soon as possible because it cannot last long as it was left it for a long time. This was suppose to be for temporary use only.

It's quite an experience I can say, I don't mind doing it again but definitely not under the hot sun. I will definitely say yes to provide assistance to a pretty gal along the expressway. LOL!

I started to reflect on the life I am actually going through right now. As what normal humans do, we tend to compare ourselves with other people. I think I have just too many thoughts and dunno when do I stop thinking them.

I am at the age of 25. What achievements have I got? Army Officer of the Republic of Singapore? not even $10,000 savings in the bank? Getting married in 5 years time without a secured job and salary? There are just many things twirling in my mind every now and then. I am impressed at you (Brain), how can you actually think of so many things and at the same time multi-tasking to help me do the other things I wanted. I feel that I am just keeping it in too much.

I just need a channel to release all out. Home is not a good place because even sharing with them doesn't have any great impact for me. There aren't friends I think I can share with. I've been quiet for too long, sometimes I really have a glimpse of thought to give up the world I am living now and dun care any single thing but keep doing the things I feel is right. Life, just what are you?!?!

I really wonder who drop by here to read but if u have, I thank-ed you. Cooking is one of hobby I must pick up somehow, sometime later in life. I used to make spaghetti, pizzas, coffees, ice blended and all sorts of western cuisine. Really wish one day I can pick up the knife to cut some meat, wash some vegetables and even design my own recipe. God bless.

Hi! to whoever is reading this. Life has been quite lifeless ever since I got a new job, everyday wake up thinking it will be just another day. Is there work? Yes. How to go there? Take Bus. What's for lunch? WTF! MAC meal again? Things to do at night? Ahh.. Watch Running Man.

The days seems uninteresting as days goes by. Fulfilling short term goals to fill my life with some excitement. BUT It does not solve the 'why are we living on Earth anyway?' in me. I know I shouldn't be saying all these but that's how I feel right now. I hope something will happen to change the perspective of living what we call "Life" again.

Caught this words when listening to my iTouch one of the day. Struck deeply in me that I wanted to share it here. Nice song.
