My Guangzhou experience - Part 1

We arrived at the Guangzhou International Airport on the 22nd December. The whole 19 of us. We would be spending our xmas there. The main purpose of this trip was to shop visit our ancestral home. And so we did. We explored the many cities of the Guangdong province. Mainly, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tamsui, Waichan. Ahyorh dunno larh, all the susah-to-pronounce Chinese names.

Guangzhou is roughly like Hong Kong in so many ways. The town, the view, the people also. Guangzhou (originally known as Canton in our history books) is a Cantonese town. Well duhh! Our cantonese speaking skills are really put to the test. And I thought I could speak Cantonese. Just a lil la. But when compared to them, we are just a bunch of noobs!

This is at the tourist west lake center. Where its mostly a tourist place. Shops selling some goods with exorbitant prices and stuff. Its a great place to take pictures of the beautiful sunset. Breathtakingly gorgeous I tell ya.

Me & my sis camwhoring in our room. This was the one on the first night, Century Palace Hotel, Guangzhou.

Oops, again!

The 3rd generation kids. Lurved most of the hotels that we stayed in. In our 6 day trip, we stayed in 4 different ones. Lurved the first three. The last was a disaster lah. So much for saving the best for last.

During this whole trip, we went with Ah Chan ( the tour guide). All of us fit in the tour van. You know sumtimes when u go on hols. You dont know the country, foreign and all what. But yet u dont wanna go on a tour cuz you get very restricted. Follow their timing and all that. Wake up super early and all.. So we got sumthink in the middle. A premium tour they call it. I kinda like it too. Its like we get to choose where we wanna go and all that, what to eat also. just that its with a small group. Only our family joins this tour. No other strangers. Quite fun eh ? The guide's there to advise us, give us the history and to bring us there lorh.

We went to visit our ancestral village of Tamsui. Its where the whole of my family originated. I mean the village. Here, every family has their own ancestral home. Every house has a story to tell. This is someone else's larh.

And here we are exploring ours. Yes, this is the one. Bare neccesities. Architecture is at a bare minimal. The house I guess was to provide shelter, food and that's bout it. This is the house all the HO's originated from, like I don't know, 20000 years ago maybe. Or more.? It was this house where some of our family members decided to escape China for a better life. Some managed to cross the seas to come to Malaysia. Hence, that's how we came about.

Here we are again. Reuniting with the other Ho's. The two people standing in the second row on the left if you can see, are my newly acquired great grandniece and my great grandnephew. Yet I bet they're both older than me. Wanna know why ? We (our generation ) are the 29th generation, whereas they are in their 31st. That's cuz in China, I guess lower education levels, people get married earlier, have kids earlier. And therefore they are now 2 generations ahead of us. Oh wells.
Being a typical Hakka woman is no easy job. Cooking, cleaning has become part of their essential life. In China also, women and men have equal status in terms of career and employment status. now la, of cuz. Not in the olden days. But at least they do have equal ranking. Malaysia still doesn't.
China was attempting to make the world's largest XMas tree. The only diff is that this one is made out of cans. Softdrink cans. Cool yea ? But by now, they would have already broken the world record.

Take a closer look.

Here, we visited a place called Splendid China. Its a place where you get to see the whole of China. The only difference is that these are real life-size miniature versions of the real thing. The whole of China. All the greatest monuments that ever existed in prehistoric times are here.

And so we travelled in a time machine to the ancient years. This was the time when the Ming and the Ching Dynasty were fighting over the ruling power or sth.

Nah, just kidding. Its just a show. But a good one I thought. Tho' in this pic the apartments in the background kinda gave it away.

Look at all these pics. You wouldn't be able to tell if it was the real one or the miniature version right.? All these are spectacular landmarks in China. That existed in the past. Or some might still do.

This is the part where they have trees planted by the most famous people in the world. Prominent political figures like George W Bush all had their own trees named after them I think. We were looking for Mahathir's tree but sadly couldn't find one. And here I am planting my own sad little branch.

This is where we had lunch on our second day. The restaurant is elegant, classy, intriguing colours and hues of brown. Splendid designs, lighting, surroundings for a great dim sum lunch.

Ah, dinner on second night. Once again, great place larh. That's all I have to say. And so is the food. The best part bout' travelling in a food-loving cult family like ours is that you get to try all the best food la, really. That's all. The very best. Even in China.

Nightlife in Shenzhen. Hehehe beautiful surroundings, good photographer. And hence your product : a great picture.

Have you ever wondered why China has a population of 1.3 billion ? Yea genormous country, high birth rates. But this is really true. You try to go shopping in Shenzhen. WOw la, the streets are all crowded with people! Talk bout overpopulation. What happened to the one child policy anyway ?

And here was where we stayed on the second night. At Jin jiang Shenzhen Airlines Hotel. Weird name right. Jinjiang. Jinjang. But this place is nowhere like Jinjang weii, its 5 star. Lurvly. Spacious. You could stay there foreva but too bad we just stayed for one night.

And to cross my fingers. Hoping for the best.

and so they said that the results are out already. It was sposed to come out at 8am SA time. And that means 6 am here. right. And i thought I would be one of the first, to actually go to the site at 6.30. DAmmit. SErver down. And its almost an hour since I've tried to view the site, but to no avail. DAmn, this is really pissing me off. The worse is that 3 ppl have already got their results. Wondered how they did it. so they found it at 5.30 am. ISHHHH. AHh, the long wait to find out your results is really indescribable. Now i wish this was spm then I could hv just gone to school and pick it up just like the others.

But no, this is AUSTRALIA. So they introduced online databasing. CHeck ur results online! To hell with this la. Oh wells, looks like I have to go to college later and pick it up anyway.

The false hope of the motorbike. HMM. I heard a distant sound of motorbike engine this morning. YOu know la, when its 6 am and ur not really of sound mind, you start thinking things. OHH, maybe its the postman here to deliver my results. I wish la. Then I remember that I didnt give my name for the postal service. And that means I have to go to college meself.

Or I could make a LDC to aussie. And use up my not-so-abundant credit value.

Or I could call taylors. ANd i did. To have the security guard answer the phone in a not-so-sober voice "HELLO, offis open at 9 O'clock."

When will I get to see my results ? The long wait is frightening, you don't know what to expect. Everybody has such great hopes n stuff. And here, I'd like to publish the TER"s of the others. Like 86++, 90++, and 92++. See, evbd's one like so high mann. Scary.

I hate the wait. Its frightening. Until I have resorted to blogging bout it.

Oh yea, and so I;m going to Guangzhou this fri. Gonna celebrate Xmas there. I know, weird place to celebrate it. but since I'm going with another 18 ppl I'm related too genetically,it's gonna be a fun trip. I should think so. It's all bout the company, babeh. And since China is such a popular tourist destination, I might even see ppl I know there. Who knows.

I actually managed to load the main page of ssabsa. Once, but failing to get to the other parts. What false hopes. Oh wells. I shall still wait. I know la, 100 000 ppl trying to get their results at the same time. But pity me la. I must have tried like at least 1ooo times already.

Oh wells. I've seen my subject SACE results already. Oh wells, I still haven't seen my ter. Arghness! And michelle, whom I was chatting. Comes and check her results one hour later than me, and got hers first.! she got 93.8. that's damn high weii.. congrats! and jia hui got like 92.85. wowness. and ill be finding out evbd's one later in the day.Ahaha!

Ohh, its nearly 9 now. I might as well save the trouble and brain cells and go to college. TAz!

My crazee ambitions

What's cooking up in my head ?

Well, to be exact, nth much really. And therefore, I wanna learn. I have this sudden urge to learn how to cook. No thanks to this quickchef. All cos' of you, I just feel like wanna cook up some culinary storm,( ahaha as if), and be like some gourmet chef or sth. ( ey woman, can you wake up arh ?).

Yea I remember last year when I had this crazy thing. Sudden passion for cooking. Kononnya. HAha. So i guess now this passion of mine has re-ignited. Yayness. What a wonderful feeling. And last year when I felt the same way, I went all the way to buy recipe books. From everywhere lar. Every bookshop I went to I was bound to return with a book. I remember going to borders coming out with 4 cooking books. Hmmz one bout french, one italian cuisine, one bout baking i think, and the other dunno larh. Now I wonder where they are. Somewhere on my bookshelf collecting dust i guess.

So I'm damn jealous of this Dwayne lar. He's a guy, yet he knows how to do all the housework. Sweep, clean the house, cook, wash and iron clothes, even sew. Where got ppl liddat wan ? Wah good househusband yea.. Heheh girls out there. If you marry him, no need maid di..:P. Jk larrh. Neways I feel it's a skill not many people have, including me. But I wanna learn. You watch out lar, one day I'll sew better than ya'. HEhe as if lar.

So yea, back to my cooking. I'm gonna learn mann. That and the other things I'm going to do during my hols.

1. Learn how to cook
2. Learn how to drive
3. Learn how to housekeep
4. Complete, update uni stuff
5. Organise notes and books so I can sell next year. and make money.
6. Exercise more. After cooking and eating, must lose weight lar.
7. And after eating so much, I might not be able to fit in my old clothes liao. So..
8. Go shopping.
9. Start work. Find a job.

hey all, well this is just a favour I'm doing for Oli, who is one of the organisers of this event, and asked me to help him promote it. Its for a good cause anyway, so yea. Support them. Think about how life would be if you or your loved ones developed terminal illnesses like cancer? *Touch wood*. I would go for the run for sure, if only I wasn't so unathletic.

God's message to me..

Well, figured out that I haven't exactly had the worst of lives. My path of life is one that is comfortable and well set out. (so far lar at least ).But I've had 2 near death experiences which is to me, GOD's sign to be careful bout what I do, the people I surrround and evrything else in it. So here I wanna share my 2 near death experiences which continue to haunt me (not really lar, bit dramatic ne..)

*************************************************
My 1st experience: WMS Sports Day (not sure if its 2002 or 2003)

Well, I was crossing the road to get to Selayang Stadium. And from where my dad dropped me, I couldn't see the road. Not being careless or anything, it was my line of vision that didn't exactly allow me to see the road. And so I crossed. And this olive-green ( i think) Pajero just came out like from nowhere. But I was on the other side by then. The Pajero just missed me by centimetres. That was how close it was. Ok my description kinda sucks but I know that if I had crossed 5 seconds later then I did, the car would have hit me. For sure. Eeesh, yea but that's all lar.

*************************************************
My 2nd experience : Kena snatched this year at Subang

Haiz this one no comment larr. Actually I was trying to remember the date but it isn't too hard to, considering the fact that it is the day after my sister's bday, and dat means I got snatched on the 28th September. Hmm, yea the day of our last trials paper, Maths. Was walking home at 10-ish a.m. Who gets robbed at 10 am lar weii? But I guess everything happens in Malaysia. So yea. And who the hell wants to rob a student? carrying a knapsack? not that big also, so obvious cannot carry laptop. But EVERYTHING happens in Malaysia WHATTTT!!!.The bodoh thieves. Guess what race they were from. Eeesh. Marah. Sampat. Too bad for them, there's nth much in it, just my handphone :(, my TI-83 Plus :(, my wallet, cash. dunno how much lar, not exceeding 200 bucks im sure and all the dunno-what cards I keep lar :(, pencilcase and all the nonsense larrh. Maybe a pad too. (xD). Like duhh, what do u expect from robbing a student lar you stupiak shites. Oh yea, and a pepper spray that I never used. Damn it, to think I was just few moments away from depriving them from their sense of sight. Like permanently. Wells maybe only temporarily but if you use just enuff pepper spray, I'm quite sure it will do the trick.

I despise these ppl. I know you only need enuff cash to cover ur friggin drug expenses. But why can't you earn a decent and proper living lar? I actually respect the people sweeping our streets and cleaning the toilets. Sure, they don' t earn much, but at least it's an honest way to make a living. Not like you. I hope your Allah punishes you badly for your sins. I'm pretty sure I'm not your first victim, and not your last. What you did to me, I can forgive. But well I doubt everybody is so forgiving. And I especially hate the scars you gave to me. Not just physically. but mentally too.

Actually I don't remember the incident much, bcuz I was unconscious at that time. I wonder why I didn't see the drug addicts approaching. I'm normally like super careful when I cross roads but I was thinking bout sumthink i guess. But neways, one moment I remember crossing the road, and the next, I find out that I'm in the hospital. People asking me

" Do you know where you are?"
" YAH!! SJMC what,,I can see your badge larr!"

Herms, but here's what actually happened. (Their account)

Ting Ting and Ollie, 2 garls from Sunway. Duno where to makan, so they were driving around the area of SS15 lor, looking for food lohh. And then they see me lying in the middle of road, apparently with blood from my head (they said wan). Major PANIC. I know, if me, maybe I'll just like faint or sth. I mean if I found sum1 that way. So they shouted and screamed and all for help. But I bet sum neighbours tot they were sum crazy skoolgarls or sth. Hehe. So yea. To no avail. If they had tried just one more house, that would have been my auntie's. Where I was heading to. I was that close to my auntie's house. Major eeeshness.

So, what happened next was that they stopped a car in the middle of the road. Like just stood in the middle of road and halted cars like STOPPPPPPP!!!!!!!. And so it did. The kind driver, Jimmy Tan I think. He left a namecard mar. Then he sent me to SJMC. But apparently, I was too heavy. swtz. So he asked sum1 to help too. maybe he was just too scared to touch sum1 with blood all over. Neways, that's how I got to the hospi lorr.

And so I stayed in ICU for the next two days. So boring there. No TV. And that whole time, I was complaining about how boring it is in there. Transfer me to the wards please, I'm fine. But nobody would listen. All wanna keep me there. No space also la apparently. But finally they found one.

yea, but the main reason for me to write bout this is cuz I wanna thank Ting Ting, Ollie and Jimmy Tan, and sum unknown person for saving me life. THANK YOU SO MUCHIESS!!! What you did, well needless to say, I am very, very grateful. think you already know that though.

And also ,the people who came and visited me. Although you didn't need to. yea sure ,ICU had no TV, but I would still have survived. Thanks tho'. And it meant a lot to me, taking a moment of your time. And thanks for all the food, drinks, fruits, flowers, soft toys, cards n stuff.I hope I didn't leave anybody out.

Part 1 continued....

FOOD
Well, the food here is just chunted lar. Suei, they’ll tell ya’..Cuz when you’re in Thailand, eat what the Thais eat marr. So coming here, first thing I wanted to try out is the Tom Yam Goong. What is the authentic Thai version? How hot or sour is it? Well, being the so pohh I am, I took the opportunity to try out AS MUCH tom yam as I can while I was here. Madness-lar. Is their tom yam really that hot? Nolar actually I feel it’s quite tasty. The diff with Msian’s one and the Thais one is that the thais use erm more herbs and spices. And damn chun lar. I think in the 4 days I was here, 3 days I makan tomyam bout 5 times. And so far, no diarrhoea yet =).Other things you must not miss, green curry, pad thai, and the chicken thingy with pandan leaves. Nyamms..

Look at the pizzas here, they're so nice and huge. 2 slices can barely fit in a plate. And thin crust summore. Nth beats that lar really.

Ohh, and they have all the other varieties also. French, Italian, Spanish, Egyptian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, you name it, they have larh. Even Malaysian. But that day I saw they sell roti canai with sum curry and stuff. Guess how much. Baht 100. OMG. That’s bout RM 11 mannn. Hais, looks like I must go back to "Boss " at the local mamak’s.

Neways being here has upgraded Thai food to the 2nd of my list of favourite food :). Hehe, Italian still remains undefeated tho'. And Japanese comes right after Thai.

This is just ONE of the canggih-manggih food courts you can find in Thailand, name's Food Loft

SHOPPING & PLACES TO VISIT
You will never get bored in Thailand. Seriously. How can ya? So many shopping malls, and other great places lar. Among them that I went to, Central Chitlom, MBK, Siam Center, Siam Paragon. Also I went to a few markets, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Damnoen Saddek Floating Market, Suan Lum Night Bazaar. If you’re looking for something more specific, I would recommend the malls and department stores because they are more focused and it's easier to look for a certain type of clothing. I especially liked Central Chitlom, 7 floors of organised and centralised shopping. Its very senang cuz they like house all the brands on one floor.

at the food and beer garden in Suan Lum

But the markets lehh, the things there are cheap mann. Everything, but you must know how to haggle lorr. Some of them ah, damn pissing off weii.. They know you’re tourists so they purposely cut YOUR throat. So gotta careful lor. And don't buy anything from the floating market, DAMN EX when you can get it at the night bazaars for much cheaper price kayy. Just go to the floating markets for experience. You’ll never get that anywhere else in the world.

hermss, traffic jam at the busy Damnoen Saddek Floating Market. Where all the tourists come and bargain for best prices, and get RIPPED OFF at the same time...

This is the Chatuchak weekend market. Opens on weekends only, duhh. Its bloody big HUGE. 35,000 stalls to be exact. Impossible to cover. Just don't bother larrh.

Also, must try the Thai massage and spa. But I didn’t have the time to try that out, my trip being a short one where most of my time was spent on retail therapy, so yea. And the nightlife also is great. I went to this Suan Lum Night Bazaar (sth like our pasar malam, only much bigger, and better). There was this place called the food and beer garden near there. And a live concert by these sexy Thai chicks who don’t sing English very well. Live concert weii. For free. I even took a video of that, but malas to upload via you tube. But if you want, I can send you larrh, just message me. Neways like how good is that? But I didn’t have the time and the opportunity to visit the red light district area as recommended by Allen. No, I didn’t see any strippers but I saw some transvestites here and there. They’re everywhere. Hmz, their square jawlines give away evrything larr.

With that said, Bangkok is just a great place to stay lar (ok I’m repeating myself again). But although Bangkok was great, KL is better. Some parts lar at least.

That’s all. Wow, it takes a freakishly long time to blog. Sighz! Have a feeling I’m not going to write-up again. See lar, if I got good mood I sure write wan.

To all foreigners, welcome to Malaysia and to all Malaysians, WELCOME HOME.(Part 1)

Ahh, heart-warming message (on intercom on the plane). Feels great to be back after being away on foreign soil at Bangkok. To me, Bangkok happens to be one of the most cosmopolitan Asian cities to stay. It's a great place to live in, in terms of cost of living, the shopping, the food, the nightlife and so much more...If you've been to Bangkok before, you'll know why. But if you haven't, here are many reasons. Well my GUIDE and my OPINION of one of the finest Asian cities (excluding KL larh of cos')

PEOPLE
The Thais are generally very friendly and nice people, and they are genuine bout it. You can tell. But most of them can't really speak English cuz they mostly speak Thai. Wow we had major trouble trying to communicate and understand them. Also, the Thai girls are fair, pretty and have really nice complexion. I wonder how they manage it with all the spicy food. Haiz sometimes I wish I could stay in Thailand. As for the guys, they are quite good looking. The average Thai guy I would say is better looking than the Msian guy (ok any msian guy reading now is allowed to slap me). And their faces, when they try chat you up with fluent Thai.

"Kuslokdfngfgaknjgakhmakhmlkmhah"
"*smiles*.Sorry, I no speak Thai"

Here, your English is like degraded to their level. When you try and chat with them, its like you struggle. And struggle. And struggle. But tis' not so bad cuz we mostly use the calculator to communicate bcuz it's often bout the prices and discounts and stuff.

Another thing I've learnt from being here is that the Thais are really loyal to their king and queen. I was in Bangkok about 3-4 days before the King's birthday. And here, the shops start selling these yellow polo-shirts with a royal crest at the top corner. Wow, the loyalness. And people actually buy them and wear them. Everywhere you go, you see a sea of yellow. But not evbd wears that lar. Of cuz there are those that are either disloyal, don't care, want to be different/stick out from the crowd, or
ran out of yellow polo shirts.
So try not to DON'T EVER!! disrespect their royalty when you talk to them. They are one loyal bunch. Bit diff from the Msian crowd yea (at least me larh). I don't even know what state our present king is from. I wonder how the shirts will do if they were sold in Msia.

Also among some of the Thais I met,
racist cabdrivers,
'Where are you from?'
'Malaysia'
'Ohh, Muslim country. 80 percent Muslims not good'
'Wart ? Then in Thailand?'
' In Thailand, 100 percent Thai-Muslims not good'
'.....'

salesmen who lie,
" You will look good in that. I guarantee you. You got good shape"

saleswomen who lie.
"You so tall. In Thai-laan, you can be supermodel."

And its impossible to differentiate the Chinese and the Thais. I should know. Nobody has started the conversation, when they spoke to me, in English before. It's always Thai. Until they realise you don't speak Thai, then they try their best at English. Why ar? Maybe I look Thai. Maybe I have some Thai blood that I didn’t know about. That could explain my love for tom yam.
siam paragon and ppl getting ready for a live concert outside

WHERE TO STAY
I stayed in this place called Centrepoint Langsuan. They are like hotels, only they are apartments. But got ppl come and make the beds and stuff, change the towels and all wan y'know. Housekeeping I mean. Hehe nicer than My Place Apartments. For sure. The place I stayed in is spacious and very very nice. It comes with everything lar, 2 TV's, kitchen, dining table, lounge, 2 bedrooms, 2 toilets, walk-in wardrobe, microwave oven, gas stove, washing machine even. Oh yea, they also have like vcd and dvd players. And those players so that you can watch those video tapes. You know those old ones like a box where you can teng-sei-kao (throw it at a dog and it dies). So yea, big place at 94 square metres and at a very affordable price. Summore come with b/fast. For 3 days. And a limo ride from the airport. Better than all the hotels I've been to. I'm not advertising for them but it’s a place I would wanna stay again if I do go to Bangkok, and a place I would recommend to everybody who wants to go there.

this is our room. Beautifully photographed by yours truly.

test

wellls. never thought ill start a blog but I did. It all started on a fine day, but it was raining heavily. oks.cut the crap. after SAM was over, like so long neva go coll liaos. so i decided to go, neways i had to clear out my locker n stuff so i tot i'll just spend some time in the library. for one last time. And then I saw friends from skool, triple T and his cousin TTS. So he was sposed to do his hw, and said i was distracting him. Tuh. Then he showed me sum posts from the kennysia blog. which i found was pretty interesting and so I spent my next few days reading his posts. pretty cool stuff. witty and creative. plus lots of pics. and hilarious captions.

hmm, dat day wat else arrh. oh yea, then i met up with dwayne. one of the only ones left who haven't gone back to hometown. yay, free lunch. why got free lunch wan ar suddenly i also dun remember. i think sum punishment or sth. oh ya,on grounds of defamation of character. wuteva. keke. then we go to cc. ahh my first time in fts, the most famous cc just opposite taylors. i like dat place. not like the other cc's ive been to. of cuz, still damn noisy like the others, but its more comfortable, spacious, brightly-lit and also widely spaced. And the toilets are clean too. Where got cc with clean toilets wann.

oh yea. where was I? ohh, how I got to start up the blog. yea there are other famous msian and singaporean blogs which was linked to kenny's one, but theirs are IMO, bimbotic lar (if there's such word). i mean seriously. like no substance wan. not like mine is substance-full or anything lar but theirs is like ridiculous. and its pink. of all colours, eww lar. i hate pink. unless its those shades of pink that are closer to red. those are really nice. fuchsia i think. oh wells, so much for the substance-full blog.

but yea, after coming back from bangkok, which i visited from dec 1-4, 2006, I felt that it was wise to leave memories forever frozen in time, well sth like our corroborree theme lar. so that one day when i look back, ill remember all the places I used to visit, and to cherish these moments in time. And same goes for all my other activities. Actually I dont really like to type ,a bit malas larh, I prefer to read. but how the hell am I gonna read when I dont blog?

hence the blog. what you are reading right now.
