memorable 2008.. doing better 2009

Finally another post in my blog, I did not really procrastinate to update here.
Here is the updates for the last 2 months of 2008.

1. Finally I found a house and staying off-campus next year in Dandenong, where I am going to have my clinical placement there for the whole year. Although the house hunting was really time-consuming and energy-consuming, the result was really satisfying, as the house we found is actually a 3-rooms villa located in a secured compound which is less than 10 min walk from the hospital!!

2. The trip to Grampians National Park was finally completed after a long planning.8 of us (Daniel, Yeu Sheng, Chean Ying, Ye Chia, Jessica, Nooi Hoay, Yun Ying and I), the landscape of Grampians is really unique, the trip is still worth it. Amazingly, Daniel and I (the drivers) actually drove around 850km in 2 days!!!

3. On the way back to Malaysia in Dec, we (Jessica, Yu Wan, Calvin, Yun Ying and I) actually made way home via Perth. The 5 days trip in Perth was really so amazing...We really fully utilised everyday we had in Perth, went to Rottness Island, Fermantle, Curtin Uni, UWA, Swan Valley and definitely Perth CBD. Actually Perth is not that boring as people described, I think we shall make another transit to Perth to visit some others attractions around like Margeret River, Wave rock etc.. Thanks alot for our best tour guides: Ling Weng and Bryan, and also our dear friends in Perth: Cheah Yen, Jacyln, Yee Fang, Jia Huei, Wai Ting Siaw tze etc for making our trip to Perth a really memorable one. Perth photos

4. Finally I passed my 2nd year Med and now officially a 3rd Med student nex yr.

All the best for the coming year.
Wish 2009 will be better than the year before.

球语

球语
* 副刊
* 星云 2008-11-19 13:29

Rural Swan Hill updates 3 - FINAL

30/8 (Sun)
After such a long discussion and visit to the Swan Hill information centre, we decided to go to Nyah State Forest, Murray Sunset National Park- Pink lakes.
1. Nyah State Forest
It is just 15 min North from Swan Hill town centre. The state forest represents a good example forest of the Murray River. The river gum trees lined along the river as great habitat for kangaroo, and other wild animals. We saw a big group of kangaroos hooping around in the forest. The kangaroos were really cute and agile, especially with baby kangaroos. We managed to climb up to 5 trees in the forest PLUS we took heaps of photos on the river bank.

2. Murray Sunset National park- Pink lakes

National park = 4 WD. Fortunately, this national park was with 2WD accessibility track to the pink lakes, the main attraction in the national parks in the shire of Mildura rural city. Along the journey, one of the roads was so greenish with rice estates!! The scenery along with the sapphire blue sky was really great. Conversely, the other side of the road was just bald… the first sight into the lakes, it’s really pinkish!!! The lake floor was so pinkish with the condensation of the salt crystal. It’s not surprising that the water level was so low, and we could just walk on the water…like those in the movie, walking on the lake!! And we left the national park under the colourful rainbow. The sunset on the way back was marvelous and coloured the world into golden.

Is it pinkish?!?

1/9 Mon
First Aid course for 3 hours + Rural ambulance presentation.

2/9 Tue
GP visit in Swan Hill. I was with nurses for the morning, and I did some practical stuff, like cutting the suture, injection, ECG, skin biopsy, ear examination..etc. The best experience was assisting in the biopsy of lipoma, a benign neoplasm of adipose tissues. And I just realized that how big the lipoma could be!! The interview with a patient was really lengthy and interesting. A patient could really get all the diseases in the body!!! Myeloma, Atrial Fibrillation, Osteoporosis, bowel cancer..etc etc……

3/9 Wed
Life story project..presentation and afternoon tea with the old folks. I bought a colourful recipe for the lady I interviewed, if she had no chance to bake, at least she could enjoy looking at the pictures of the yummy food!!

4/9 Thu
A long day with all the presentations: GP, OHS, Panel discussion, Veterinary...and the day was ended with a visit to a dairy farm! The dairy was really big with almost fully automated milk production. The while rotary was so big and could fit 92 cows at the same time!! the cows were really trained to be multi-tasking!! The cows were eating, while the milk was sucked by the pump, and they poo and urinated at the same time!! amazing! :P

5/9 Fri
It’s the final day of the 2 weeks rural placement in Swan Hill, we eventually decided to have a trip up to Macedon ranges for the Hanging Rocks.. we stopped by Bendigo for lunch and when we reached the Hanging Rocks park, unfortunately it’s closed.. then we made our way up to Mt Macedon for the sunset..again!! it’s so magnificent to be immersed into the golden brown world.

Rural Swan Hill updates 2

30/8 (Sat):
It’s the day we went out for our own day trip…only 4 of us: Shu, Xin, Hamon & I. Initially we planned to go to Mungo National Park IN NSW outback which we decided on the night before!!..it’s the World Heritage area which would add another world heritage area in my list (other than Malaysian Mulu National Park and Kinabalu National park). When we arrived at Balranald, the gateway into Mungo, it’s raining heavily and we decided to ask for further confirmation before we continued our journey north up to Mungo. Unfortunately, Mungo was closed on that day due to heavy rain. Eventually we decided to change our plan to Mildura!!! We took the longer way from Balranald via Euston- Robinvale to Mildura.

After visiting the Information Centre of Mildura, we decided to go Woodies Gem Shop before we headed 30km north to Wentworth, a small town in NSW. I got Jessica’s birth stones for Jess’s birthday present, earings for Yun Ying and another key chain for myself. Why Wentworth?!? The visit was really worth it…we had lunch overlooking the junction of Darling & Murray river, the 2 greatest river in Australia. Then we visited Old Wentworth Goal before we went to Perish Sandhill. Perish Sandhill was the highlight of that day…I was so proud of myself of discovering it via the postcard sold in Mildura!! The sandhill is like a desert in the middle of the barren land. The view was so magnificent…due to the rain, the road to sandhill was so muddy and the mini pinky Nissan Micra was sliding like drifting…luckily I managed to control the car and to stop it!! Here is a picture on the sandhill….

Then we went to Wentworth Show, which was just a rural community show event with all the competitions… we watched the equestrian and enjoyed the celebration ambience. And eventually we headed back to Mildura for the Indian dinner…( P/s: we didn’t even have Asian food so frequent back in Melbourne). When we’re back, it’s ady 12 am!!! We spend like 16 hrs out for the day trip…it’s so fruitful even though we didn’t manage to go to Mungo. It’s so exhausting on driving for the long journey luckily Hamon and I shared the load…

Rural Swan Hill updates 1.

Rural in swan hill
I know it's quite late for the update, but I was really too busy with assignments!!

25/8 (Monday)
Depart from Clayton to Swan Hill which took us about 5 hours to reach there. On the way, we stopped by Bendigo for bunch andthen I took the turn to drive all the way up to Swan Hill. The drive was really boring with the road was just straight and with very few turns… The scenery was still almost the same with farm land and some of the barren and flat land of Victoria. We had a short introduction period and then had our PCL (Part A & B) in Aboriginal Co-op centre with a GP.

26/8 (Tuesday)
It’s the aboriginal day which we paid a visit to Tyntynder Homestead, a settlement of the migrants back in hundreds years ago. We learnt about the culture and lifestyle of aboriginal, as well as the history. The place was great with an underground showroom of the collection of aboriginal and the amazing building of migrants which is already more than 100 years old. We paid a visit to Murray River bank for more details observation of the aboriginal lifestyle. Then we went for a meeting at the aboriginal co-op centre, for some presentations of the services provided for the aboriginals. Had a great delicious dinner of roasted pork….etc. yummy

27/8 (Wed)
We had some free time before the visit to a nursing home in Nyah West. I did an interview with a nice, friendly lady. She was really enjoying chatting with me and talked about her life story. It’s so interesting, and luckily I got a good interviewee. Then in the afternoon, I join Chunk, Daves and Matt to Kerang for a pharmacy visit. It’s so cool to look at how the pharmacist work, but the job wasn’t much interesting to me. Anyway, it’s good to have a good understanding of the pharmacy services provided in compliment to the doctors’ prescription. It’s the night we cooked our 2nd dinner. Lin, Sheryl and I were in-charge of it. We cooked tasty mushroom egg noodles soup and with mouth-watering roast-chicken. It’s so satisfying.

28/8 (Thu)
I had my hospital placement and ambulance visit. It’s so packed but I had a great day. Hamon and I were allocated to Acute ward in the hospital and we’re there at 7 am for the shift-handling meeting. I followed a nurse in completing routine check-up on her patients. Interesting, I did some temperature, BP taking and also learnt some new knowledge of medical care in the hospital. Hamon and I walked around and interviewed some of the patients. We also conducted physical examination on a patient and we found shifting dullness on his abdomen!! (which was never found by any doctor!) Initially we just wanted to do percussion and auscultation on the patient’s thorax for diagnosed consolidation of lung! We also met a patient with a very rare disease called vanishing bone disease. We felt so empathy towards the patient. Eventually the session in ward ended a bit late about 4 pm.
In the evening 5.30pm, I needed to attend to ambulance station to have a shift with the paramedics. Unfortunately, there’s no case or call. I was just sitting and relaxing there. Plus I watched a movie there on the super cosy sofa. It’s great that a kind paramedic cooked a yummy dinner for me and also I made some new friends there. It’s such a good experience although without any cases!!

29/8 (Fri)
We had some presentations of the allied health services, like physiotherapy and counseling services. The programs ended earlier today in the afternoon, and I had an interview session for my assignment. We had a picnic and walk in the pioneer riverside park, enjoying the beautiful Murray River bank with the rows of river gum trees. It’s almost spring, all world became alive and awaken from the cold freezing winter. During the day, the weather/temperature was good..while in the morning/ late at night could reach 0 degree. It’s really freezing. (the temperature difference was really big..it’s Australia and inland…)

Food scare :(

Singapore finds more melamine in food

September 22, 2008-The Australian

SINGAPORE has found the potentially deadly chemical melamine in a third milk product imported from China, authorities say.

New laboratory findings showed White Rabbit Creamy Candy from China is also contaminated with melamine, the city-state's government announced late yesterday.

Melamine is at the centre of a widening food safety scandal in China, where authorities said nearly 13,000 children were in hospital yesterday after drinking toxic milk powder.

On Friday, Singapore suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China after local tests found samples containing melamine, which is used to make plastics.

"These products include milk, ice cream, yoghurt, confectionery such as chocolates, biscuits and sweets, as well as any other products containing milk from China as an ingredient,'' the agri-food and veterinary authority (AVA) said.

Retailers and importers have been told to recall these products.

AVA said its tests first found melamine in samples of Yili brand iced yoghurt, and then in the Dutch Lady brand of strawberry-flavoured milk.

At least four children in China have died from drinking poisonous baby formula.

Melamine was initially reported only in milk powder but Chinese authorities later said they found it in some regular milk as well.

The chemical can make milk and other food products appear to have a higher protein content than they actually do.

It has become apparent in recent days that people in China have been deliberately watering down milk and then adding in the melamine to boost the protein content and make the product look normal.

Countries from Brunei to Burundi have barred Chinese milk products as a result.

Melamine can cause chronic nephrotoxicity and finally acute renal failure. It is excreted poorly by the body.

There are also some other food which maybe complicated eg Snickers, M&M, Biskit,
Dove chocolate bars, Mentos yogurt balls, Oreo wafer sticks, and Want Want Take One Baby Bites.

I don't know how true is that, but my friends, be careful!

Updates...End of winter

Winter is going to end soon in this month. But the temperature doesnt seem any much better. It's still so cold. August is so excited with ups and downs of my days. The amazing Olympics started on 08.08.08 and the opening ceremony was so amazing, It's really the best I watched up to date... Even the Aussie here also felt that the opening was 100 times better than any olympics opening ceremony in the history. :)

On 20.08.2008, it's my mid semester exam, everyone was really into in. Glad that the paper was a bit better than last time :) And also I had my last day of Community Based Placement in Wesley Disability Community Services, the placement gave me a great understanding and appreciation to the primary community care to the people with disability. Thanks so much to the field educator who really helped us alot to make our placement a significantly beneficial.

End of the month, next Monday I'll be going my 2 weeks rural placement in Swan Hill, a small rural township which is 5 hrs away from Melbourne city !! I guess I 'll update soon again :) It's just a short one for now

Holiday ending soon....

This winter break is going to end soon and it's the 2nd last day of my holiday!!!
Unbelievable, the holiday is always seemed so short and it's gone in like split of seconds.
Anyway we're really had fun during this winter break though we didn't go interstate and only tour around Victoria. It's remarkable for us to see SNOW and visited Ballarat, one of the best tourist attractions in Victoria. ANd also we did have a bird-view of the whole Melbourne city N Port Phillips bay from the Eureka Tower. It's really memorable. To take note that, I also helped in MONASH Orientation 2008 to fully utilise my holiday.

Here are some of the photos taken during the trips.

1. Eureka Skydeck 88 and Old Melbourne Gaol--> Click here

2. Orientation 2008--> click here

3. Ballarat -- Sovereign Hill and Kyral Castle

Anyway..Good luck for everyone and myself for the upcoming challenges on MED 2042 :)

Holiday!!!

19 June 2008
After few weeks of swoc wat, finally we are free!!! After 5 days of exam, now I only update my blog. LOL. In these 5 days, everything was so fun without stress!! World changed upside down.. on 19 June 2008, we (Lin, Jessica, Yung Ying & I) had dinner with Sheryl’s mum and grandma. The food were really delicious there, yummy… But the best part was we all were in a car travelling on the road, but didn’t have any idea where to go and what to do!! We’re shouting in the car with the ideas and comments from 5 people. Inside the car was fully blasted with laugh and fun!!! Ended up we had an ice-cream in Cold-rock and sang K in Lin’s room!!! (CK and ZP, we didn’t even reach Glen Waverly for K singing).

Happy Birthday, Yi Chin :)

20 June 2008

We ‘re jus doing nothing much at home, mostly resting and watching movies!! Suddenly when I was having nap, Chau Wang banged in and invited us to have a movie (The Chronicles of Narnia- Prince Caspian) in Glen Waverly!! In less than 10 min, we decided to go and left halls!!! Everything was so rush till Yun Ying even forgot to bring her wallet…and we just managed to board onto bus when we’re running to the bus stop!!! It’s really a good movie and we had a Vietnamese dinner. Yummy, I love that Vietnamese coffee… (Clarice, guess u like that coffee as well )

21 June 2008

Shopping day!!! Initially was main for groceries shopping, but we bought so much from K-Mart!!! I got my lovely speakers (2 Altec-Lansing speakers with a woofer). The sound is so good and now I really enjoying so much of watching movies and listening to songs in my room!! And we had a early celebration for Nooi Hoay’s birthday!!! Hope u like that Wasabi rice ball I made though maybe not powerful enough. My neighbor, hope u like that carrot I made o..:) Happy birthday!!! No matter what u are OLD now!! :P

My lovely speakers...:)

22 June 2008
Ling Weng, see I went to city to meet u :).... but is really good to meet you all (Ling Weng, Yee Fang, Yi Theng and Yi Jia). It’s been so long never see u guys, guess 1 yr since your last visit to Melbourne. Though just a shot lunch, and u all just transit here 12 hrs to New Zealand. Have fun over there. A new discovery in Melbourne, I had the first ever delicious roast pork in Melbourne!! It’s really so tasty…again FOOD…. Also, after lunch, Yun Ying and I went to St Kilda for a walk there, another discovery that we never see the whole St Kilda area during our first visit last year. We just barely visit a small part of St Kilda beach, and didn’t even know about the famous cake houses in St Kilda. Eventually, we visited the beach again, and definitely the whole area hopefully. And we got sth special for one of our friends in Deakin Hall, for his/her birthday from St Kilda art market. And sure for the famous cake bakery, we bought a slice of famous cheese cake home!!! FOOD…AGAIN…but..is nostalgic...

23 & 24June 2008

Nothing much was done other than having much and much more rest and more movies. Movies were so good with the speakers, no more headphone is needed though the sound quality is not really good. Badminton was so fun after so long never have time for my body work out…I did some great moves and return. Haaa

25 June 2008
Thanks to Jessica of planning and making the trip to Mt Dandenong a success. The weather was so sunny but the wind was so strong to blow people away. The Port Phillips bay where the whole Melbourne metropolitan and Geelong located can be seen with naked eyes!!! Even the MONASH University can be marked on the view. In the jungle, the scenery was like in the movie of Narnia or Harry Potter, definitely countless of pictures were taken. I never imagine MY back up plan to puffing billy was going to work. As everyone was too freezing to have a jungle walk around the mount area, we eventually went to Puffing Billy, one of the world most welcomed steam trains in the world. It’s though a bit expensive for trip from Belgrave to Emerald, but was really enjoyable as we had the whole room for ourselves. The photos will be uploaded soon. Everyone was so ‘high’ on the journey, we even invited to have a look on the locomotive engine, how the steam engine worked by burning black coal. And we also meet the other train on Menzius Creek station while I ran over to get the greatest ever opportunistic photo with the moving steam train, (thanks to Jessica also). LOL. Eventually everyone was tired, and we awarded ourselves with the mouthwatering Korean BBQ dinner in Clayton…uhmmmm…….FOOD again!!!! :P

***Fun still on for the holiday, though we are not going interstate, Victoria and Melbourne can still have so much fun…

To my dear daddy,

Happy Birthday!! It's another year I am not at home to celebrate your birthday with you and family. I really wish that I can be back home to have the family time with everyone in the family. I love the feeling of being home, being loved by everyone. You can be my hero, my lovely daddy, my friend or my brother at anytime.

Daddy, always take care and have rest. Don't get yourself too busy and must relax as well. Hope you like the present I buy later when I bring it back home in the end of the year. :)

BUTTER VS. MARGARINE

Pass The Butter ~ ~ ~ ~ This is interesting . . .

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys.

When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.

How do you like it?

They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine...

Very high in transfatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL(this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDLcholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact....

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area.

Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* It does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value

*Nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.

Why?

Because it is nearly plastic.

*Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

I like these 2 articles/essays

Police??? 警察??

From Sin Chew Daily:

Summer Holiday--Home... sweet home

Yeah, I went back Malaysia for my first ever summer break. Due to the budget, I took a budget airline, Tiger Airways from Melbourne to Singapore. It took all my energy and my sleep. Though I had some sleep on flight, but due to the transit which took place in Darwin (we got to check-out and check-in again in 2 hrs time + immigration procedures). It's feeling like in Sona room---> the super hot and stuffy weather in Darwin, made me feel so glad that I am not studying in Darwin.
Reached singapore at 4 am in the morning after an exhausted journey. In Singapore, thanks to my aunt and cousin of treating me and keep us company during the half day, when I was waiting for my train in the evening.
Yeah, feeling so good to be home, to be in my sweet home, the place where I took my 1st step in my life, the place I grow up, the place i am always being loved, the place I am so familiar with, the feeling of home, the feeling of great relationships and ties with everyone....I love my home, my family, my village, my friends...etc. really miss it so much. I never leave home for so long, and i am back.... that feeling of happiness and .......i am so indulged at the feeling of home and also busy helping up in tidying up and cleaning the house for CNY. The houseworks I used to do at home, become my enjoyments...

I love my family....:)
