Expressions of Malaysia's rich and diverse heritage, translated into beautiful artworks by young artists, were on display at the prize presentation ceremony of the 2nd annual Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Tanjong Heritage 2003 Art Competition today, held at the Malaysia Tourism Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Ahmad Sarji b Abdul Hamid, President of Badan Warisan Malaysia, was at hand to present the prizes totaling RM25,500 to the winners of the competition, which was organised by Tanjong plc.
With 'heritage' as the central theme, the artworks that were submitted covered a wide range of subjects, including heritage structures, old trades, streets of yesteryear, scenes of the past, historical activities, natural heritage and cultural activities.
YBhg Datuk Khoo Eng Choo, Chairman of Tanjong plc said, “We are very pleased that this competition to inculcate greater appreciation of Malaysia's heritage as well as creating a platform to boost our nation’s creative talents has continued to receive enthusiastic response from the various organisations.
"The beautiful artworks that we receive each year since the project was first launched in Penang is certainly an encouragement for Tanjong to continue with its initiative to promote greater awareness among our young artists of the rich heritage around them," Datuk Khoo concluded.
The Tanjong Heritage 2003 Art Competition attracted more than 250 entries from eight major art colleges in the Klang Valley. They are Kolej Bandar Utama, KL College of Art, Lim Kok Wing Institute of Creative Technology, Malaysian Institute of Art, PJ College of Art and Design, Saito Academy Sdn Bhd, Universiti Teknologi Mara and Kolej Intec.
In the water colour category, En Mohd Azrul bin Shuib from Universiti Teknologi Mara emerged as the first prize winner while Ms Wong Woan Jing from PJ College of Art and Design bagged the first prize in the oil/acrylic category.
Cik Nurul Waheda Kholil Lor Rahman and En Mohd Farif bin Abdul Jalil, both from Universiti Teknologi Mara, walked away with the first prize in the charcoal/pencil/ink and mix media categories respectively. There was no first prize winner for the etching/dry point category.

A Jurors' Nominee, each from Penang and KL & Selangor, has been selected from among the winners of the five categories in this year's competitions. The "Jurors' Award" is for the artwork that has displayed promising artistic skills showing maturity and confidence in highlighting a Malaysian heritage through an original composition. The winner of the "Jurors' Award" will receive a plaque and a Certificate for his/her efforts.
The inaugural Tanjong Heritage Art Competition was held in Penang in 2001 and was organised for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor last year.
