Chapter Two
Meeting of the Sole Survivor

"How could you let your guard down!" someone shouted at Akira as he slashed the zombie from behind. "You are the holy vampire slayer; Matsuko! How could you! And to think I had intended to..."

To her surprised, it was Yamate. "And you intended to what?" questioned Akira, slightly taken aback as she walked towards him. "How dare you..." she said, her features twisted with disgust.

"Mummy!! Mummy!!" cried the child as his incessant wailing got louder. Yamate hurried over and held the child in his arms, consoling him. Akira was astonished by his actions. A vampire consoling a human child? Impossible! Yamate felt the presence of a weapon targeted at his neck.

"Put the child down. Now!" demanded Akira, gripping on tightly to her silver sword, "Get your filthy hands off him!"

"I'm bringing him to the police station. You can deal with me after this." said Yamate without moving a muscle. "Or not..." he muttered, just audible enough for Akira to hear as he cradled the disconsolate child in his arms. He turned easily, past her weapon, leaving her slightly shaken as to her decision.

"I'm coming too," Akira announced, voice wavering slightly, as she followed Yamate there.

***

"Well, thank you for bring him here, sir. I left him with my colleague. They will take care of him. And we had his father informed and he will be picking him up shortly," said the policeman to Yamate. "As for his mother…" The policeman sighed, "There have been a few cases of young women being attacked by vampires. But none of the women were found."

"Any idea where they went?" asked Akira.

"I'm sorry, but I am unable to release this information to ordinary citizens. We need to make sure that no one else gets hurt," the policeman warned her gently.

"Well, for your information, I am a vampire slayer! Not an ordinary citizen!" Akira snapped at the policeman. "Ever heard of the Vampire Slayers from Japan; the Matsukos? It's our duty to slay them. So, may I know where the place is now?"

She's so fierce and scary... She used to be so gentle and sweet! A far cry from her past... Yamate thought as he glanced at her with the corner of his eye.

The policeman had no choice but to give in to Akira, because he knew thats they needed her help with exterminating the vampires. "We suspect they reside in one of the cities in England, Glasgow. We've heard rumors that, vampires have been gathering around that town. Most of the people there were either turned into vampires or killed. But we have a survivor from that city, Teddy Creevy. He's at the Antonian Institute of Physical Health now." The policeman sighed as he ran his hand through his hair, looking in the distance with tired eyes, "A seventeen year old boy, how he managed to escape from the vampires is still a mystery to me..."

***

"Ted Creevy? Kinda rings a bell," muttered Akira, as she exited the police station. Yamate followed silently behind her, not sure if he was doing the right thing. A few blocks from the police station later, Akira stopped abruptly when she remembered Yamate and what he said to her. She spun around with a vengeance, intent on finding him, but he was right there, shadowing her every footstep. He stopped walking as soon as he noticed Akira had stopped to look at him. He stared back, wondering what her next move would be.

"Well, I'm letting you off this time." She said testily, "I've got something more important to settle. Don't you try to create trouble or let me see you again because I assure I won't be so forgiving," warned Akira as she turned away from Yamate, heading towards her apartment.

"Wait! Matsuko..." said Yamate trying to stop her.

"What do you want now!?" exclaimed Akira, as she continued walking. "You are lucky enough not to be slain by me!"

"I- I can help you. Please let me help you..." said Yamate, quickening his pace, as he tried to catch up with her.

"Why would I need help from a vampire? Stop joking around and get lost!" said Akira, she stopped and turned to faced him. "I said stop following me. Or else..."

Yamate stood there, staring at her back as she headed for home. I must follow her! I must protect her! I can’t let history repeat itself...Yamate took out a jewelry box from his pocket and opened it. A bat-like pendant was lying inside it. "Reiko..." whispered Yamate as he closed the box, putting it back to his pocket and gazed up at the sky...

***

Akira burst into her apartment, slamming the door behind her. Walking into her bedroom, she switched on the lights. The room was decorated with silver wallpaper; it was a small room, with a bed, wardrobe and a dressing table displaying a whole range of make-ups and accessories. She opened the wardrobe and took out her metal reinforced suitcase that contained all her equipment for extermination of zombies and vampires. Scanning through all the important and useful items, she laid them out on the floor before her, staring at each of them.

Biting her lips, she took out another suitcase and started to pack some clothes, simple and durable ones. It was going to be a long journey. She sighed and threw in her very last item, her notebook, into the traveling suitcase and closed the box unceremoniously. Donning on her coat which concealed a dozen different vampire-slaying objects, she crossed briskly to the door where she hesitated before opening.

Maybe he isn't really evil… but how could a vampire not be evil? Damn! So much for 3 years of training and then letting one vampire off!

Ding Dong... The door bell rang; Akira opened it to see Yamate standing there. "What do you want now?" she cried. "You really want to die, don't you?"

"I was just..." muttered Yamate. "You need to know some information about the city, and you need to go see Ted Creevy now. I mean... He's the sole survivor... And I want to help you too! I swear I won’t do anything funny..."

How could I forget about Ted Creevy! "Alright," Akira replied reluctantly. "But don't you dare try anything weird..."

"I promised I won't!" chirped Yamate happily...

***

"Antonian Institute of Physical Health eh... Any idea which room is Teddy Creevy at?" asked Yamate. Shaking her head, Akira entered the lobby of the hospital. It was bright from the inside. Rows of chairs were occupied by people with various ailments. Akira walked to the receptionist, "Excuse me, we're friends of Ted Creevy, here to visit him, but I can't remember where he is located at. Could you please tell me where he is?"

"Ted Creevy..." said the nurse as she checked through the records of patient lists. "He's at block 3C, level 6 room 51. Poor boy that one..."

Before the nurse could finish talking, Yamate followed Akira as she ran towards block C in the hospital. With the sign board's help, they found Block 3C. Yamate caught up with her and they waited for the lift.

Ding Dong, level 6 Akira and Yamate stepped out of the lift, looking for room 51. They found the room located at the right end of the corridor. "Teddy Creevy" they opened the door and to their surprise, they saw Ted running around in the room. Singing and dancing while two policemen and a nurse were trying to stop him.

"OH MY! I got visitors! Hello!" exclaimed Ted brightly as he ran to hug Akira. Akira merely stared at him, slightly taken aback by his action. She turned her head back at Yamate. Poor kid, he was only seventeen and he was frightened by those freaks and drove him to insanity.

"Who are you people?" questioned the policeman warily.

"We are Ted's friends. Err, can speak to him privately? Please..." Akira pleaded. Yamate stared blankly at her. She then nudged him by the arm and Yamate nod his head in agreement, still partly unaware of what was happening.

The policemen discussed their next course of action between themselves before answering them. "Well, ok I guess," as one of them turned back to face Akira. "We're coming back tomorrow to keep an eye on him." As left the room, Akira was struck by a sudden urge to ask them something about Ted. "I'll try to find out more about what happened to Ted from them. You stay here look after him alright?" asked Akira. Yamate nodded and she followed the police out the room. Ted was sitting on his bed, staring into the distant lands of his imagination. Yamate walked over to Ted, who turned to stared at him as he started to bite his fingernails.

***

"What did the police say?" prompted Yamate as Akira stepped back into the room.

"Do I have to tell you?" snapped Akira.

"Well, I can tell you something in returned. Its about Ted. Serious!" Yamate looked pleadingly at her. "Ok?"

"Okay." Akira stated grudgingly. "What they told me was that, Ted was found outside the police station before he was admitted to this hospital." She gestured. "He was muttering things about vampires and the city Glasgow when he was unconscious. Then he went mad, just like what you see now." Akira continued. "Then what about yours?"

Yamate smirked...

Chapter One
Their First Meeting

Verse 1: This forbidden love, this loneliness, this perpetual continuity

"No! Aunt Kaiya, please don't kill him! He is different from all other vampires! Believe me!" cried Akira as she tried to break free from the barrier placed by her aunt. Her eyes were watery as she sputtered through her tears, "I can prove it to you! Please aunt Kaiya!"

"Don't be silly little girl. Vampires hurt us, humans. We must destroy them" snarled Kaiya as she held the killing sword at Yamate's heart. "Don't you ever shed a tear, especially for men! You will lose your slayer's powers. Don't forget, you are the heir of Matsuko." She added coldly.

"Akira, let her kill me. Don't waste your time on me. I'm not worthy for you. After all, I'm a vampire…" said Yamate turning away from Akira’s eyes. "Kill me Matsuko Kaiya," Looking directly at her, "It'
s my entire fault that I have made Akira fall in love with me again…"

Akira was in London honing her vampire-slaying skills.
Loneliness was eating at her, consuming her sanity sluggishly. She was alone in London... completely alone, with no familiar face in sight.
But that very summer, the day that she had mastered everything, she met him. The person, or rather, the vampire, was soon to be her soul mate. Things were about to change…

Finally, the training is over. Its time to go shopping! I haven't bought any new clothes since I got here. She sighed. She took her bag and closed the door behind her. Locking it, she skipped excitedly down to the streets of London to do her first shopping.
***
After hours of shopping, Akira was no longer able to carry her shopping bags. With so many bags of merchandise in both her hands, she could hardly walk to begin with. Well, lucky as she was, a man offered her a helping hand as she bumped into him accidentally. He wore black sunglasses and a black outfit and coat, looking very suave in his outfit. Akira accepted the help without much hesitation.

"Do you want to come over to my house for a drink?" Akira looked at him,"It's my way of thanking people for helping me."

The man in black sunglasses stared at her for a while before replying: "Well, if you insist. Then thank you very much for your hospitality."

"I must thank you for helping; this is the least I could do." Akira insisted, breaking into a smile. Fallen into my trap...

"We're here," Akira announced, leading the stranger into her apartment. He followed her, glancing around and absorbing each subtle feature.
"You can leave the shopping bags there on the floor," said Akira pointing to the corner at the main entrance. The apartment was rather commodious though empty.
"So, you didn’t mention your name, did you?" said Akira as she dumped some of her purchases in her room where she had half a mind to try them on later.
"Oh, please forgive me. I am Yamate." He replied, slightly taken aback by his discourtesy while he dumped the shopping bags on the living room floor.

Yamate sat himself on the only couch in the room, soaking in the silence of that moment.

"So," Akira began as she sat in the living room couch.

"Why are you wearing sunglasses indoors?" Akira inquired, earning a wince from Yamate, who didn’t appreciate the abrupt question.

"It's... an eye condition," Yamate answered, pushing up his sunglasses. Akira raised one eyebrow, knowing very well that Yamate was lying.

"You're a vampire aren't you?" she began, drawing a silver dagger from her pouch.
"Ouch!! My finger ..." blood was dripping slowly down from her index finger.
Mistake. Oh no...

Yamate smelt it. It was the smell that he hated, yet craved for. His eyes turned bloodshot and his white fangs lengthened.

"Monster," Akira whispered, gripping the dagger tightly as Yamate edged closer to her. "Get away from me," Akira threatened, but to no avail. Yamate grabbed her hand and stared intensely at her index finger, but struggled, as if trying not to bite her.

"Don't touch me!" Akira shouted, shoving Yamate away. Yamate stood there, slightly hurt by her acrimonious words. "Filthy beings," she continued, scowling, much to Yamate's displeasure, "Should die!"

Akira made facile slashing movements at him, which he barely escaped from. "Why aren't you fighting back, you coward!" she shouted, her eyes bearing a huge amount of animosity towards the monster in front of her. Yamate stared back at her, his bloodshot eyes filled with trepidation. It was as if she was the monster, and not him. "Listen Matsuko," he began, dodging another swipe, "I don't want to fight back. I don't want to hurt you."

Akira faltered, slightly taken aback by his seemingly benevolent words. Yamate saw this, and grabbed the opportunity to make an escape. He leaped out of the window. "Why that..." Akira cursed, dashing towards the window. She scanned the area, searching for traces of the vampire. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Yamate leaping from building to building.

"Like you can escape from me," she hissed following him.

"HELP!" she heard someone desperately cry. She noticed Yamate turning his head to face her, only to turn away when he saw that she was looking at him. "HELP! PLEASE!" the voice cried again, this time, louder than before. She stopped, losing track of Yamate. No time to bother about that ignominy now, she thought, searching for the source of that voice, someone's in trouble!

She jumped down from the building and headed for the alley where the cries were coming from. Another vampire huh... It's my lucky day, to be able to test my skills on them. Akira saw them, a vampire sucking on a woman’s blood. She spotted a child crying behind the dustbin.

"Stop it at once you freak," Akira hissed and stood in a position, ready to attack. The vampire seemed taken aback for a moment, before he smiled. "Matsuko Family, I presume." He smirked, blood dripping from his fangs. Akira stood at her position, her features showing a perceptible disdain for the monster in front of her.

The vampire began to change. His black hair turned into white; the fangs lengthen and the eyes turned blood-shot red. There were scars on his face. . So that's your true form huh… Akira thought. She began chanting a spell to create a barrier around the child to protect him. "Stay there and don't move!" shouted Akira to the child and he nodded once, sniffing back his tears.

The vampire lunged at Akira. With all the training she had gone through, she nimbly sidestepped the lunge and readied herself immediately.
She's fast! He thought.

"Now it's my turn freak!" snarled Akira, she jumped into the air and swung her sword, slicing through the vampire and he vanished into the air. Akira turned around and removed the barrier. "It's alright now," she said to him. The child made his way out slowly, checking if the vampire was still there. He then ran to the woman who was lying motionless on the floor.

"Mummy, wake up please" the child sobbed as he knelt down next to her. "Mummy, please wake up…"

Akira felt bad for not being able to make it in time to save the child's mother. She walked towards the woman and knee beside the child. Checking her pulse, there no sign of her heart beat; she was dead. "I'm sorry, your mother is dead." The child hesitated, unable to register the fact, before breaking down into loud sobs.

The woman opened her eyes; she sat up like a zombie.

"Mummy, you are awake!" said the child widened his eyes, obviously happy to see his mother again.

What!? No way...

"I want blood..." the woman muttered.

Wait a minute… She’s a… Zombie! Akira thought. She dashed toward the zombie in a desperate attempt to pull the child away from his mother but she knew she was too late. The zombie grabbed the child and was about to sink its fangs into his neck. The child shut his eyes and was rejoicing. To him, it felt as if his mother was holding him in a warm embrace.
Such naivety and innocence... but... No!

"No!" shouted Akira. She wouldn't be able to slay the zombie in time.

"How could you let your guard down!" someone shouted at Akira as he slashed the zombie from behind...
