a tragic incident at standard chartered kl marathon 2010
Today at 1:55pm
I would like to share a tragic incident that happened at Standard Chartered KL Marathon today…
When i was running my final 2 km on the 10km… as i was running along the road in front of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, i saw a guy was sitting on the road side then soon enough he collapsed…
this incident attracted my attention as a guy(a training doctor, named Irkhan) that was trying to help him was shouting for medic..
as i was a trained EFR, i ran over to see what is happening.. (it was around 1 hour into the race for 10km runners)
i got to know that the guy (named Lim) has collapsed and was having seizure.. we tried to place him in recovery position… he was breathing very heavily and shortly and he was also biting his teeth very very hard… i was afraid that he will hurt himself (with either biting his own tongue or he closed up his airway).. so i tried to open up his jaw and tried to communicate wif him to have him relax and breath easily.. he then slowed down his breathing and taking deeper breath…
another lady (lady A) came to help and constantly monitor on his pulse… and Dr. Visva (was another participant in the run) came over to help…
Then suddenly, his pulse was gone… then we lied him flat and started on CPR procedures… we constantly check on his pulse to check whether his pulse has come back.. we did chest compression and also mouth-to-mouth breathing to Lim…
as we were doing the CPR procedures, we did not sight medic anywhere.. and we tried to shout as loud as possible for medic…
After awhile into the CPR procedures, "lady A" said that she could feel his pulse but was very weak.. then we stopped the CPR procedures to see whether he regain consciousness or not…
After i stopped the chest compression on Lim, i started shouting for medic services again with the hope that a medic services is nearby and heard us.. but unfortunately not… we only sighted 3 DBKL Officers(with big motorcycles) just stood by the road side and just stare… the did not come over to help or to check out what happened… (it was around 10 minutes that Lim collapse and had seizure)…
after a moment, Lim loose his pulse again.. we started CPR procedures again.. we still did not sight an ambulance or any EMS(Emergency Medical Services) around… after approximately 30 compression, Lim regained his pulse but was very very weak.. and yet.. there was still no ambulance or EMS sighted… and DBKL officers still stood there and did not came over to help… so I informed a passer by to run to the officers to tell them to call for an EMS soonest possible...
after we performed CPR procedures on Lim for the the third time, finally a St. John ambulance came after around 15 - 20 minutes after Lim collapsed…
we let the EMS officers to take over the CPR and First Aid… Dr. Visva asked whether do they have the AED(Automated External Defibrillator)… one of the person from the EMS said that they do not have it.. then I asked whether do they have a face mask with pump.. they also did not have it there… THEY PRACTICALLY HAVE NOTHING IN THE AMBULANCE!!!!!!!! -.-"
EMS took him and speed their way to HKL…
we were later informed that the Response time for EMS is 3 minutes but it took them almost 20 minutes to arrive… and later.. as I was reading through the Runners Guide that was provided in our running kit…
There is a statement (at page 15) that states that "Medical Assistance - Medical Aid is available every 4km and at the Finish Area. Due to runner's physical condition, Medical Officials are authorized to stop runners and remove their timing chip"…
every 4KM MY ROYAL ASS.. I did not see any first aider, ambulance or any sort of medical officials along my 10km route… and if 4km was true.. it definitely will not take them SO LONG to arrive...
-------------------------- -------------------------- -------------------
I got a call from Dr. Visva a moment ago.. he went to HKL to check out the condition of Lim and he informed me that Lim have passed away on his arrival to the hospital… T__T
Lim is only into his 20's and was running the 10KM distance…
P/s: please share this note to as many people as possible.. we will hope to create awareness on the inefficiency of EMS, DBKL officers and organiser of standard chartered KL Marathon 2010...
we also want to create an awareness that this kind of inefficiency have caused a life of a young man...
we will hope that the marathon organisers will take responsibility and make EMS a top priority in their planning

tea and coffee 'protect hearts'
Tea and coffee 'protect against heart disease'
It adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting health benefits from the most popular hot drinks.
Those who drank more than six cups of tea a day cut their risk of heart disease by a third, the study of 40,000 people found.
Consuming between two to four coffees a day was also linked to a reduced risk.
While the protective effect ceased with more than four cups of coffee a day, even those who drank this much were no more likely to die of any cause, including stroke and cancer, than those who abstained.
The Dutch tend to drink coffee with a small amount of milk and black tea without. There have been conflicting reports as to whether milk substantially affects the polyphenols - believed to be the most beneficial substance in tea.
Coffee has properties which could in theory simultaneously increase and reduce risk - potentially raising cholesterol while battling the inflammatory damage associated with heart disease.
But the study in the Journal of the American Heart Association finds those who drank between two and four cups a day lowered the risk of the disease by 20%.
excerpts from bbc news
to a coffee lover/addict like me, this is basically a good news story. and as what prof yvonne van der schouw, the lead researcher said: these drinks appear to offer benefits for the heart without raising the risk of dying from anything else.
while ellen mason, senior cardiac nurse at the british heart foundation, said that this study adds further weight to the evidence that drinking tea and coffee in moderation is not harmful for most people, and may even lower your risk of developing, or dying, from heart disease.
hmm... happy, happy enough peeps? however we must always remember that leading a healthy overall lifestyle is the thing that really matters when it comes to keeping your heart in top condition. so if you are here in kualè, silver line studio is there for you. make sure to 'like' their facebook page to get a quick update... :)

technology cannot replace a good surgeon
now i merely understand that we have eight choices for corrective eye surgery. all thanks to an article in us news & world report entitled a lighter, defter touch-years of refinement have made laser eye surgery better than ever (michelle andrew, 25 february 2007). this article also discussed the different types of eye surgeries and the technology behind each one.
the article quoted glenn hagele, founder and executive director of the council for refractive surgery quality assurance, regarding the importance of surgeon selection when considering laser eye surgery. what he said makes a lot of sense to me: "no amount of technology can make up for an inferior surgeon". if you browse USAEyes.org website, you will find a lot of good information as well as a listing of certified eye surgeons who meet certain standards for postoperative visual acuity and patient satisfaction.
you will also able to get free information about conventional or wavefront custom lasik, all-laser lasik, and many more. then find a surgeon with a good record of vision outcomes and patient satisfaction.
i think it is great that someone has rated eye surgeons on quality of correction and patient satisfaction. now, if they could just do the same for all the other specialties! LOL

there's no word to describe this~
Woman burned alive after kiosk workers refuse to lend fire extinguisher
A man’s desperate attempts to save a student from her burning car were in vain, when petrol kiosk attendants refused to lend him their fire extinguishers despite his pleading.
The incident on the flyover along Jalan Cheras, near Jalan Loke Yew, happened at 3.30 a.m. yesterday (03.06.2010) and involved the Myvi driven by the deceased, a Toyota Vios and a lorry.
Stock Xchng
According to Malaysian newspaper, The Star, witness Teo Chai Yong, 31, who was the first to arrive on the scene, called emergency services when he noticed the Myvi was on fire and saw a girl trapped inside, screaming for help.
Teo then drove to the nearest 24-hour petrol station, less than 500m away, hoping to find a fire extinguisher.
"As I ran up to the counter, I saw four fire extinguishers behind the glass door. An attendant was inside by the counter."
"I pleaded with him to let me have the fire extinguisher and screamed that someone was pinned inside a burning car."
"But he just stared at me and kept saying he was not allowed to open the door after hours," Teo said.
Desperate, Teo even offered to buy the extinguishers and showed the attendant his identity card.
A second assistant showed up and told Teo to call the fire department if there was a fire.
"I saw four fire extinguishers behind the glass door"
Frustrated, Teo then rushed back to the accident scene, only to see the car with the woman still inside, engulfed in flames.
"She was still screaming but I could do nothing. I just stood there, her screams grew more frantic before fading away," Teo said.
When contacted, BH Petrol's managing director, Tan Kim Thiam expressed great regret over the incident. He explained that the attendants' reluctance may stem from a fear of being robbed, as this was a frequent problem in the past.
City traffic police investigations Chief Deputy Supt Abdullah Roning told The Star that the woman was burnt beyond recognition, and her personal identification documents were also lost in the fire.
The police believed she was a 27-year-old college student from Sarawak.
Update: The deceased's identity was confirmed by police this morning - Florina ak Joseph, 27, a Sarawakian native and a student.

my sweetheart smells like 'fresh'
alrighto... anyway he is not using adidas action 3 product. more over i do not think that he is aware of the existence of it yet... hah! but i will surely recommend him to start to use it, especially after he goes for his swimming.
i dunno about him. but for me, i guess i prefer him to put on 'fresh'. from what i know~
- it has 24 hour protection against perspiration
- new dry max system technology for extra wetness absorption
- cooling fragrance that will leave him with that just showered feeling when the heat is on
- special anti-whitening material to minimize white marks on skin and clothes
- it contains 0% alcohol - PH resspect - dermo-tested
now i will see whether i can easily persuade him to try this product. besides that it is easily available in any drug/mart store of course ;)

nuffnang special screening: prince of persia: the sands of time
alrighto. why this screening was special. that's because nuffnangers has been treated to an exclusive ‘snack & screen’ session courtesy of mister potato! andre yaa andre ya riba riba...
with the greasy, unkempt hair of an emo rocker and a bart simpson smirk, 'the prince' goes swinging, leaping, slashing and joking his way through 'prince of persia: the sands of time', an energetic if empty-headed adventure based on the popular video game. though set in a sea of sand that's supposed to be ancient persia, the movie features a titular hero whose anachronistic catchphrases – "that all ya got?" and "whoa", uttered in an incongruous cockney accent – makes him sound less like a middle eastern prince than an east end pothead.
the focus of prince dastan's acrobatic exertions, which careen from ninja-like moves to the wall-bouncing gymnastics of parkour, is a special dagger he has stumbled upon. when a jewel is pressed on its hilt, releasing the few thimblefuls of sand inside, it has the ability to rewind time, but only for one minute. it's like adam s's magical remote control in "click," but with a weak battery. when you run out of sand, you run out of power.
not just any sand will work, either. hidden underground is a giant glass vessel filled with the right kind. only the dagger can break the glass. once broken, the sand inside will flow through the knife's handle, giving its user virtually unlimited ability to travel backward in time. one more thing: if all the sand is used up, the world will end.
the other problem is that dastan's not the only one who knows about it. someone else wants it – most likely dastan's brother tus or his uncle nizam – and has set dastan up for the murder of his adoptive father, king sharaman. dastan, you see, is not of royal blood, so he makes a logical suspect (it might also explain the low-class accent and his aversion to shampoo). whoever really killed sharaman wants dastan out of the way so that he can find the source of the charmed sand himself and, you know, exert dominion over the blah, blah, blah.
with the assistance of the dagger's official custodian, princess tamina, dastan must stop that from happening. along the way, he and tamina – a spirited, tart-tongued women's libber in a country not known for gender equality – engage in predictable verbal sparring even as they dodge arrows, flying knives, snakes (this one: i don't like! urgghhh...) and hired assassins (called, preposterously, hassansins).
i can't compare this to the video game as i am not into it.
there are, however, a few distinct pleasures. the stunt work is consistently exciting and well filmed, by the director. and the character of seso – a sudanese knife thrower with almost no dialogue who at first appears to be a very bad guy and then turns out to be a very good one – makes a welcome presence.
i wish i could say the same about seso's boss, a bandit who befriends dastan and tamina, and aids them in their quest. played with the broadest of broad humor, he's clearly meant as comic relief. but from what? does a movie this silly really need two clowns?
every sly wink and gymnastic tumble from dastan, who already looks and acts like a refugee from cirque du soleil, seems to suggest otherwise.
now see for yourself and tell me of what you think.

celebrities who stink
i was attracted to this product because it uses cotton to help absorb perspiration. it contains no aluminum and is non-staining.
i tried the product and was somewhat disappointed. it contains fragrance and i don’t like anything competing with my perfume. however, after using the product, i realized of why it fragrance.
it doesn’t really stop the wetness very well at all. now, i have to admit here i am a pretty bad sweater especially when i do my line dancing. however, i would have had to reapply adidas 24 hour control extra absorption deodorant for Women several times during the day in order for there to be no sweat odor. and that disproves the 24 hour control promise.
after using this product off and on for several months, i have found a use for it. if i run out in the morning without showering (shhh... hiks!), i use this first and the scent helps me feel fresh. so, in that regard, i like having it around.
would i recommend it? yes, especially to people who don’t sweat a lot to begin with, it would probably be great.
i may buy it again, as it is more convenient to find than other natural deodorants. it can be found at any type of mart store.
