Birthday Week

This was a big week here in the Thomas household.
On Tuesday, Quinn got her license!
She's been practicing for seven months and has accumulated over 80 hours of experience.
The tester told her she was a good driver.
However, he was far more interested in her car than her driving.
He couldn't stop talking about the manual transmission.

Thursday was Robert's 53rd birthday.
He requested molasses cookies.
Of course Grammy decorated the wall.
I am not sure what is going on with Q's shirt in this picture.
She looks like she has a beer belly.

Mia turned 20 on Sunday.
She had a big party at her place on Saturday night.
I'm not sure what all she made, but I know she barbecued all sorts of meat, made mac salad, and made a gorgeous cake.
She had 20+ friends over!
On Sunday, she came over for our regular family dinner.
I figured she had enough cake, so I made a key lime pie, recipe courtesy of Robyn.

What I love about...

I love Mia's courage to do difficult things.
She never seems scared or intimidated to take on a challenge.

I'm clearly not meeting my goal of updating the blog once a week...

The year is almost over since I set that goal, and time will tell if I achieve it and continue to provide updates.

I've been on an emotional roller coaster regarding my employment for next year. Initially, a special education position seemed available. I was offered the job and spent time debating whether to accept it. After deciding to take it, I learned that the position was no longer available, which was disappointing. After much thought, I decided not to return as an instructional assistant, a difficult decision that left me uncertain.

On the last day of school, I said my goodbyes, gathered my belongings, and left, thinking it might be the last time I ever set foot in the school. There was a slight chance one of the teachers might leave mid-year, which gave me a small hope that I might be asked to teach the second semester.

Unexpectedly, my opportunity came sooner. On Thursday, I received a text informing me that one of the teachers had accepted a different job, leaving a position available for the upcoming school year starting in August. After a day of consideration, I decided to jump in and take the opportunity. I need to complete paperwork, interview, and transfer my status to a teacher-in-residence. While teaching, I'll be required to take classes, but with only four classes left, I think it's manageable. I'm getting really excited about this job.

It's been a month since I posted any pictures or updates. So, here are some highlights from April/May.

We bought Grammy's house.

Robyn turned 27 on the 29th.

I turned 51 on April 30th. This is the only picture I have that is related to my birthday. Robyn and Devin sent these yummy cupcakes!

Dad went to Vancouver, B.C. on May 1st. He had a nice trip, but he brought COVID back with him. I don't know how, but Q and I didn't catch it. Grammy and Karen weren't so lucky.

Eric came for a fun visit. He was here to attend a friend's wedding, but we got to spend time with him. Q love playing at the park!

Here's Grammy outside of her natural habitat actually petting Frank, Ashley and Jake's gigantic dog. Grammy is not a fan of animals outside of cages, so this was a rare event.

These guys got some fresh, summer cuts.

Some nature pics from a hike, running, and getting stuck on the side of the highway because the skid plate partly fell off and was dragging. I waited for over an hour for AAA. Dad got there before AAA did and was able to remove the plate. However, the hazard lights drained the battery, so then the car was stuck for a different reason. We had to request AAA again (we had cancelled the request already). Q had an appointment I had to be home for. So, Dad waited on the side of the highway for another hour or so waiting to get a jump.

Here I am sitting in some nice, hot rocks waiting for help.

Eric ran a half marathon this past weekend with some friends. He did an amazing run!

What has been happening the past couple of weeks?

We had a new fence put in this past couple of weeks.
Parts of it look great, and some parts were not done well.
We are a little disappointed.

Also, we just went and got the biggest cashier's check I think we will ever obtain.
We are closing on the purchase of the house on Monday.
We will be homeowners again!!

Q is getting dangerously close to getting her license,
which means we need to get going on purchasing a car.
There has been a lot of debate about who should get the new car, me or Robert,
and what kind of car to get.

Q has been doing little art projects here and there.
I love it!
The other morning I walked out to these cute sidewalk drawings.

Even though my allergies start acting up this time of year, I love the blossoms all over town.
It is getting hot, so these are going to disappear soon.

I can't wait to see this kid in July!

What I love about...

I love that even though Robert works long hours and is super tired, he will make time to spend with family.

Happy Birthday, Q!

 Q is 16!

The day started with Allison coming over, decorating, and waking up Q!

Allison went all out - confetti, rose petals, Red Bulls, flowers, tons of photos, gifts, and a Starbucks sammy.

She is not exactly a morning person, haha.

Regardless, she was surprised and loved it!

The only thing Q asked for was to go shopping for her birthday.

So, on Thursday afternoon, we went to Chandler Fashion Center.

While there, she got her ears pierced,

She's been wanting her ears double pierced for a long time.

She was thrilled!

I asked the family to text me what they love about Q.

Here were their responses.

There was a solar eclipse this past week.

Haley came over to check it out with Grammy and me.

Some of my favorite blossoms this year.

My mom used to think sea horses were mythical creatures.

It's because she was homeschooled.

What I love about...

I love that Quinn is so gracious.

She gives a genuine thank you.
