I've known Sam Johnson since we were six years old. I'm pretty sure it was six. Sam is my oldest friend who is not a family member, yet for some reason it took us about 25 years to start playing music together. And then, not long thereafter, I moved to Boston.
About two year ago, Sam came to visit us and we took the opportunity to lay down a few songs that I had written. One of these dated back to our Utah jams, while the others were all recent compositions. We were both excited about these new recordings. They sounded nothing like what we had previously done. However, life, grad school, and plain old laziness on my part lead me to allow these songs to waste away on my hard drive.
A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to bring them back. I was (I am) tired of writing songs that only I hear. So, I worked on the mixes, added a few keyboard parts, tweaked some knobs, cut a few songs that were not quite right for the playlist, and suddenly a 5-song EP was filling the air.

I present to you our debut EP, "Red and Sad Stars" by The Annual. We call ourselves The Annual because we live in different states and typically get to jam about once a year.
