Nearly every night since we moved into this house, as I try to fall asleep, I hear music. It's horrible, death-metal type music, and I've always just assumed that it's phantom noise generated by my tinnitus. I get in bed, turn the fan on, and generally within 15 minutes it starts.

But right now I'm in the living room with the TV off, and just before 11, when I'm often in bed with the lights out, the music started up. From my seat, it sounds like it's coming from the air vent in the ceiling. When I'm in bed, it sounds like it's coming from the air vent...but I assumed it was just one of those things.

So now I'm a little freaked out. I'm home alone. There is not a TV nor a radio in in this house. So where the hell IS that music coming from?

I think it is an echo from the past. I can have people who have never been hear before give me details of a conversation they are listening to now, but it's a conversation from years, or even decades, before. Some things imprint on an environment, I believe, if they are important enough, or strong enough to leave their echo.
Or, I'm as batchit as you, and we need new meds.

Get a cheap inspection camera from Amazon. Thread the lead through your ductwork. If no go, thread it in between the walls.

Have you tried recording it?

do you hear commercials? is your ductwork picking up signals from a nearby station?

Oooo good idea!

Harmonics from the heating ducts and vents that make the metal move enough to produce sound. Vibration from wind or air movement. Since your heating ducts are in the ceiling, it may be from air movement in your attic.

You might want to get an HVAC guy out to see if they can fix it.

Holy carp!
Sounds like some good advice being offered here, though.
Good luck.

That's a bit freaky Karen. I have tinnitus and in the shower the sound of the water combined with that makes me think the phone is ringing. Sometimes it's so real sounding I have to turn off the water and stick my head out to see if it's the real thing. I like Janet advice. Let us know if you figure it out. Lynne

Oh that would nearly send me around the bend...not that it would take much these days.

Hopefully it is simply the sound of the air ducts vibrating. Lots of good ideas from the rest of the commenters.

Sometimes I hear noises from air vents. Not usually air conditioner vents but ventilation vents. A neighbor could be playing music.

That is weird and spooky. I hear people talking when I am in the bedroom. My hubby is just deaf enough that he can not hear them. My tinnitus sometimes sounds like water running. .

There's the rub: I hear the music, the vocals, song changes, and commercials. So something in this house HAS to be picking up a signal from somewhere. Right? RIGHT?

You'd be surprised how often those types of things happen. I had a phone line that picked up a country radio station instead of a dial tone. And that's Not my music! Then I also had a turntable (record player) that I would make mixed cassettes from and all of a sudden I would pick up truckers talking on their cb's - "hey breaker, breaker" stuff and it would get on my tapes. And this is from many years ago. With all the electronics going through the airwaves now, it's not unreasonable for sounds to be picked up through any kind of metal or other devices.
