In the past two days, I am watching a Singaporean drama which is 小娘惹. My mom told me that it is a nice drama, since in that drama, they prepare a lot of food, which attracts my mom's attention. My mom rarely watch Singapore dramas, since their quality is not so good as the HK dramas. Generally, the Singaporean dramas are not as nice as the HK ones. But they do have nice ones too!
Anyway, 小娘惹 is not about food. The story hits me. It paints the women position in the early 1950. Although, I did not catch up these drama from the start, it is easy to follow. When I do not understand things, I can ask my mom.
Well, the drama hits me because the story is quite realistic. I like movies/dramas that are close to the reality. Compare the Singaporean dramas (generally) to the HK ones, the HK ones are very 'novel' and their (HK) storylines are always the same, which bores me a lot. Besides, the quality of HK dramas drops a lot in the past 5 years. They do not have the professionals at work and the storyline seems like popping out from 1 night of paperwork. The Singapore is better at that respect, but it lacks elements to colorize their dramas. That is why people do not always like watching Singapore dramas. I notice that Singaporean dramas have their bored elements too. But those can be easily eliminated.
Back to the 小娘惹, I want to say that this drama encloses a very nice history about how life is for the Malaysian women in the early 20th century. At that age, there is no 'woman-position' in the society. They are only a kind of machine that stays at home and waiting to be married and getting kids. It was a very tough time for them. But nowadays, I believe that there are women around the world, who are still looked down by men.
Since the women cannot compete with men, they compete themselves. To survive or to be loved by men, they must be the strongest and the most powerful one between the other women. In 小娘惹, you can see how selfish a human can be, no matter which sex you are. The war between the women is also very nice sketched, although one is a humble girl who has no intention to be the Queen of the house.
I like to see the traditional Malaysian culture. Myself, I am a traditional guy too. Being traditional has its good and bad face. The good side is that I believe the goods and the bad side is that I am a closed person.
Anyway, when you are free and want to see a nice Chinese drama, do consider 小娘惹. Simply click on HERE. If you notice that you have the same taste as mine, check other dramas I mention before in this blog.
Now, I want to sleep. Good night and Merry Christmas for those who comes by regularly.
