well, it's certainly been a long time.
i guess i've let down my blog a little, abandoning it for so many months (just 2 in fact, but long enough).
but i'm back! =)
and i guess there's only one thing to be talked about in this post.
my (npcc) cadet inspector course...
i think some people will have turned away to other sites by now upon hearing this, but never mind, i'll continue anyway for those who want to read it. and perhaps to preserve my own memories/experiences as well? in case i become senile tomorrow and forget what happened to my life in december 2008...
moving on.
damn, i need time to organise my thoughts.
ok, it's been 1 hour since that previous sentence there. so here goes!
its been one heck of an experience for me this year. all due to the CIBTC (aka cadet inspectors' basic training course) december 2008...
and looking back now, i dont feel in any way that i've wasted away almost a month of my life in the course. definitely no, and its not just because of the CI rank that i can proudly put on my uniform now.
its the process, not the result, that matters most. (cliche but whatever. its true) going in chronological order now, though i'm sure some people will sian diao for sure. this could be my longest post yet so...better be mentally prepared. anyway, if you get sian you can always fast forward to an interesting segment of your choice then continue on =)
right from the start (uniform collection day), i thought/was proven by the CIs that the course would be another silly one filled with tekans, scoldings and whatnot. it could just be a stereotype caused by previous CIs, but that was what i really felt it to be initially.
oh, and i saw joseph there...i was kind of "oh shit" since he's been reputed in my school's batch for being some monster of sorts. haha sorry joseph, but this is the truth...
then came course briefing. again, not much to be happy/joyous about, so i think i shall just skip this.
oh but just to mention, it didnt seem like much of a course briefing day, what with all the other seemingly random and unrelated programmes such as HTA familiarisation and some random lecture that i cant recall already. i'm suffering from short term memory at 16years old...zz.
from here on the real stuff (or course) starts. residential course. (part) ONE. a 5day4night course, i think everyone was like omg ggxxyyzz or something to that extent upon learning of this. true, there was strict discipline virtually everywhere that we had to adhere to at all times, but i wont deny that i had learnt tremendously. not just drills or campcraft, but also alot about soft skills, leadership, and personal character development.
the course is like mainly made up of lectures and the practical sessions of things like drills and campcraft.
ha, the lectures. some of them were like so very sian...its a fact, no matter how we were forced to listen to them. say for example history of npcc, there were defintely some interesting facts but then having a speaker drone on for an hour and a half is a sure recipe for a trip to dreamland. =(
as for the practical sessions, most of them were just revision of stuff that we've learnt before, so not a big deal there. though things like campcraft did introduce me to alot more of in-depth theory/understanding of certain rationale for certain steps or procedures in tying stuff.
then drills, there were the cane drills. never did them before so i was pretty interested to learn. it looks difficult at first but turns out its not that hard to get the hang of it.
speaking of which, i still lack a drill cane at the moment *sobs* but i hope to get one the next time i go to HTA. heard its 30 bucks but i think it's well worth the purchase =)
and the stupid powell shop there refused to open for business on the day that our squad went back to return our no.1 uniform. sian ah.
and of course, the SWORD drills that everyone's been looking forward to. think it was the highlight of the day. probably the most challenging so far too, i had trouble with almost every drill la...return sword is quite scary haha. need to get the sword tip into the scabbard. simple? heres the catch. you need to do it WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR SWORD AT ALL. but then the sword tip isnt razor sharp or anything like that (it's not exactly a sword designing for killing, after all), so not too much to worry about there. but its still damn scary lol. oh and you're supposed to drive it down hard and fast into the scabbard when you've found the opening. lol imagine if u positioned the tip wrongly, say pointing into your flesh? then you drive down hard. OUCH. thats really gg.
seems i forgot that there was radio communication and orienteering as well. i kind of found orienteering pretty boring...i guess its just like that, this kind of content. you know, read maps, set compass, how to walk (LOL). as in really, they call the topic "walking techniques". which sounds stupid though, its like "let me teach you how to walk" -.-" maybe the technique is to use your legs, one at a time? haha ok just joking. but it cant be helped too much la. boring means boring, nothing for it de...
but radio comm is damn cool, at least to me, and i believe its used during ATCs for instructors? looking forward to that =DDD theres just something intricately interesting/exciting about using new gadgets...
oh and meals. well, i must say its quite a (pleasant) surprise to see that HTA offers such wonderful (at least in the context of such a strenuous course) fare for the people who go there. in fact, they always give so much food that i see so much going to waste all the time. zzz. but i wont complain for being given more than sufficient food. the HTA mess = heaven =D
and wei li once called it the messtin. in case you dont know what a messtin is, its just this metallic squarish container/bowl where you put food in and cook on a stove.
"guys when i give you keluar baris move into the messtin!"
ROFLMAO la.
then for the bunk.
its not really heaven, and it cant be compared to the bedroom in my house of course, but i think its at the least humanely inhabitable. =/ when everyone's tired after an entire day i dont think it matters whether you're sleeping on a bed or on the floor. you just go to dreamland fast.
some major events/activities of the residential course:
.38 revolver classification shoot
first time using the .38 revolver, had been using the nubby .22 before this. we were told the recoil would be greater, but i think no one expected it to be THIS great. after the first shot i was like "holy shit", yea but turns out i still got a pretty decent score. 146/200, i felt it was a great try since it was my first at the .38...though there are imba marksmen who get scores like 188/200, and i have nothing to say to that lol. except imba.
water confidence jump (at pulau ubin)
haha. at first i was a little scared of this, cos im scared of heights =( yea, then i happened to kena the 3rd or 4th guy to jump. suay ah. but actually i think it would be worse if i were say one of the last few. the anxiety can kill you know. yea then i stepped onto the board there, then the trainer mr bala told me to step out more. i was like "crap you're asking me to step out more later fall off how you pay ah". then i was damn smart and went to look down just before i jump. sia la my legs got a bit jelly-ish zzz. then i just look forward and drop. diuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. it was abit long before i boom into the water, but at least i didnt open up my legs and get an irreversible injury to...some part of the body. and seawater is DAMN salty people. dont drink it. drink liao want to die sia. salty like free. like potato chips saying "extra salt".
i also realised that i could actually see fairly well even without the aid of my spectacles. surprising really, with almost a thousand degrees. and i could still swim by myself to the ladder some tens of meters away. not bad ah?
then when i came up felt like jumping down again, for some reason. =D
oh and of course. now for the people!!! of RC anyway.
BUNK 3-27. =)))
we're made up of trainees from different squads, but i dont think that stopped us from bonding together.
as jun hao said, we're essentially a bunch of "siao ginna". what a nice way to put it =D
all the crazy (and of course disallowed) stuff that we did...like staying up late to have chit chat sessions for one two hours, changing in the wrong places at the wrong times, the unique door code..
omg!
the door code!
*scrub scrub* - ie scrap knuckle twice against the ventilation flaps on the door
"who's there?"
"___ you la" (go figure what the blank should be...hehe)
its just...lol. plain and simple, but unforgettable. (did that rhyme? =D didnt plan for it to)
although the instructors said after the course that they had spare keys to enter the bunk even without our permission...zzz, yi xiang lied and said they had no spare copies. scammer.
now for CHARLIE squad! =DDDDD
being together for 9 days doesnt just end up in nothing. there were lots of things that we enjoyed each other's company doing, such as things as simple as having lunch together in the mess and talking crap/being lame, having random jokes and laughter burst out in the middle of drills, due to either some joker or another or perhaps the IC for the day having a bolt-from-the-blue zao xia, all the pranks on each other, and many many more (hey!). yea, all in all an unforgettable memory la. too difficult to explain in words =(
oh, i forgot to mention my squad instructors? lol, they're lim hao jun and pang zhuang yi. at first i thought i knew hao jun haha...he just seemed familiar for some reason. but apparently we didnt know each other before the course. anyway, they're both very nice people and very proficient in all the stuff that they taught us. but hao jun was like constantly demanding standards and i felt kind of over pressured to perform. i mean, for the past 2 years especially hardly any NCOs/CIs have pushed my school's batch to our limit or even anywhere near that. guess i was a little unprepared for the new expectations/standards demanded from a CI (to be).
i'd like to add that the CIs in charge of the course are known as CIIs (ie CI instructors). cool? not really...lol.
moving on to the next phase of cibtc. the ADVENTURE TRAINING CAMP. (oho, scary.)
well, frankly it seems that there were very very few activities despite it being 4days3nights. major ones were rafting and land expedition. oh and campfire of course.
rafting was kinda cool since the only other time i've done rafting so far was during OBS in sec3, and that time our raft just came loose even before it crossed the gates into the quarry. perhaps due to poor handling of the raft (we were like heaving it in vertically wth. think of all the stress on the ropes). anyway, this time the raft was able to successfully go on the water, and we had a chance to paddle it around a little. not say very fun la, but its an interesting experience.
then land ex. it was super tiring but then i remember gerald's cheers most. "upon her head ah!" edited + censored version though. we actually have 2 edited versions now haha. one is a more undesired one since it implies certain adult material -.- and the other is for our dear florence ma'am and abdullah sir! may write it here, assuming i remember to. lol.
oh and we were first to return to the campsite among all the other groups! wohoo knights rock! like what i said in the debrief/group sharing, motivation, despite what weird ways it is in, can do wonders in achieving your goals.
campfire. haha i felt that some groups' performances were rather lame, cliche (like the usual flashback of trainees getting owned by CIIs) and seemingly pointless (meaning that it seemed to be going nowhere). but other than that the cheering sessions were all quite hyped up and high energy, which is great. and the CIIs had some damn cool coordination between them; yea you'll have to see it to believe it. not to mention that they all had a comment after each group's performance, which certainly broke out laughter in many people.
there was a blackout in the whole npcc campsite during the first night too. quite shocked. its like the whole place was plunged into darkness, kinda creepy. this resulted in the mock campfire being conducted a night earlier, and for some reason everyone was damn hyper then. maybe cos it was one of the few "relaxed" activities of the camp, and maybe because of the blackout, everyone went abit ki siao, you know...
ok thats the end of atc.
WAIT.
you didnt think i forgot my ATC group, did you? group KNIGHTS?
of course i didnt.
well, one thing i felt was that we weren't as strongly bonded together as charlie was. it could be due to the fact that 9 days and 4 days make alot of difference. but there's no denying that we've had lots of fun together also. from all the cheering sessions to the group pioneering and orienteering sessions. and we still got an awesome group cheer, which again i might put it up later. and of course the bunch of siao gin nas from bunk 3-27! ;)
and our instructors, florence ma'am and abdullah sir! florenece initially appeared to be on some scolding frenzy la, scold to no end every atc discussion, but later it improved (probably due to our group's improvement in performance as well) and she also motivated us alot throughout the camp, esp. the land ex. abdullah had some funny cheer about underwear (LOL?!), and he's very approachable also. zz again i feel that 4days isnt really enough to get to know the instructors enough...especially when many activities dont involve very much interaction with them.
ok fine. nows the end of the part on ATC. serious.
i think to summarise my journey of learning in the CIBTC, it would be this sentence:
i've become a better person.
yea, just that. it isnt very feasible to list down the 101 things that i've learnt, so here you go.
although at the end of it all, i'm not sure if i will be an excellent CI, or even a good CI for that matter, but i have believed and still do believe that one can do it as long as he has the heart to. so as long as my heart and hopes are still with NPCC, i think i'll be able to do as much as i can and as best as i can. and hopefully, i'll be able to bring RINPCC back to its glory days of being a gold unit, and reignite in all the cadets that fervor and passion cadets once had for NPCC.
some quotes to share:
"if you have vision but no action, you are just dreaming."
"if you have action but no vision, you are just going through motion."

"do it once, do it good."
now to end it off with cheers! didnt bother to get photos cos i am lazy so sorry about that Xp

its the process, not the result, that matters most.
