Live performance, Sarasota, FL, 2-1-2014

Hold the phone, Mabel, there's actually something to blog about here at JSH Combo HQ. Today I performed on piano at the Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market, regaling tourists from Wisconsin with that patented low-budget no-fidelity "Creeps Music" sound. The set list, for the three statisticians among you, went thusly:

Green Fairy Theme (JSH original, from "Toulouse-inations")
That's How I Got To Memphis (Tom T. Hall cover by way of Bill Haley & the Comets)
Don't Let Me Down (Beatles cover)
Liberace Never Did This (JSH original, instrumental)
Stray Cat Strut/16 Tons/Sultans of Swing (Stray Cats/Tennessee Ernie Ford/Dire Straits covers)
At Long Last Love (Cole Porter cover)
Pulcovian Dixieland (JSH original, instrumental)
The Strangler of Bradenton (Headcoats cover of "The Strangler of Boston Town" with JSH-altered lyrics)
Cowboys Are Square/Louie Louie (Mighty Caesars/Kingsmen covers)

Although I have a standing invite for repeat performances here, it may be awhile. I'm going to be back on the road hawking crude paperbacks for the JSH Book Tour and I may not be back this way again. But it felt good to tickle the ebonies and ivories for the first time in awhile, and it's got my blood up to start playing out more often. (And next time, note to self, bring a tip jar!)

Transient Phenomena

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that humans actually traveled to the moon in the 1930s. And let's just say, playing devil's advocate, that they found a phonograph record there. And let us just say, merely speculating on a hypothesis, that they played it and this is what they heard.

Super Snack Pack 5000

Music for a future age - don't be square, be there. We're on the outside but we're not looking in. So unplug the jukebox and do us all a favor, that music's lost its taste so try another flavor.

Carnival Tunnel Syndrome, Ford

Two more segments of sediment from my laptop to your life - "Carnival Tunnel Syndrome" is a loaf of soft gloom that settles gently on your face and penetrates it, while "Ford" is simply a brief snippet of Gerald Ford doing what Gerald Ford did best - being impenetrable.

Vegetable Mineral

Yes, it's another pointless piece of pretentious plunkery from the Jeffrey Scott Holland Research Farm - collect all 1,000,000!

This one is called "Vegetable Mineral" and the management is not responsible for any subconscious restimulative disturbances to your nervous system while listening to it under headphones.

In fact, the management isn't really responsible, period.

Liquor Store Lights

As with Esquivel's See It In Sound, this bit of experimental ambient-noise is a tonal representation recording sonic impressions of many a misspent moment hurtling in an inebriated state through the murk of the mountainous night, dulled visual receptors scanning the blurred noctural landscape and seeking that light at the end of the tunnel that turns out to be an oncoming liquor store. Okay, actually, I'm totally making this up as I go along. But click here anyhow.
