10.17.12 ... beach day

Beachday09125

a few weeks ago we finally took a drive back to santa monica. we brought along our first completed chair set to take photos for ev's new mission beach woodwork etsy shop. you can visit that HERE.  but first we walked along the beach and scout spent time feeding her beloved birds.
they are waiting just for her.

i am always picking up little beach treasures and ev is always good enough to serve as my pack mule.

Beachday09126

here they come to meet scout and her bread bits....

... which she saved from our wonderful-as-always lunch at rae's,one of our first and favorite california finds.  especially tony who is one reason we arrange our trek only on a day he is working.

we still find it hard to comprehend that we can visit the ocean in just 30 minutes.  we hope to drive over more often now that we are finally settling in to our new california life - which still seems surreal.  that's a good thing.
thanks for stopping by. until next time. happiness to you. from me. with heart.

5.1.11 ... seuss picture dictionary buttons

Img_6388

the other day i found a discarded suess picture dictionary. i have never seen one before. that seems impossible but there you have it. i had to get it because visions of adorable magnets and buttons raced through my head, not to mention a million other ideas. these are the first. i think they're perfect for mother's day.

scout found her 'are you my mother?' book for my photo shoot. the dictionary birds reminded me of the star of this classic. i hope your may day was lovely.

3.9.11 ... a new banner . a package . and scout's art

Img_4155

i've had the same banner in my joonbeam shop since the day i opened it in november 2007. lately, i've been cautiously thinking of changing it and i braved a switch today. it fits in better with the theme of my shop. it is not what i was aiming for but it's a start and fine for now.

Img_4179

here's a mini skinny bookmark i made as the tuck in for this package today. both the tag and it are from one slice of a vintage postcard.

Img_4191

and here it is wrapped up and stamped with my favorite Abraham Lincoln quote stamp. and now for scout's creation...

Img_4207

this became a laminated bookmark. it is a gift for someone special. :)

this is the front.

and, with that, i bid you good night.

2.13.11 ... scout's sketchbook project bio

scout participated in the sketchbook project, which is an art exhibit containing moleskin notebooks filled with individual artist's art.  the booklets will travel to select cities throughout the states and be on display.  if participants pay an extra fee their sketchbook will be uploaded for anyone to view on line, too.  scout chose this option.  she completed her sketchbook on time!  woo hoo.  she needed a bio to travel around with her booklet but was not feeling the love for that task.  after dragging her feet for weeks, she decided i should write it and she would accept whatever i wrote.  we were limited to just 400 characters, including spaces.  she did work with me on editing my original piece which was too long.  here is my creation.

I'm Scout. Yes, Jean Louise Finch. I’m 16 & a lifetime homeschooler which affords me the opportunity to pursue my artistic endeavors. I have 3 adult brothers, a beagle & 3 cats. I love to act, sing, dance, write & sign. I devour films like rocket scientists study formulas. My dreams include working at Pixar, starring on Broadway & being discovered by Wes Anderson. Are those my birds? I need those.
if you are not familiar with one of, if not the, greatest commercials ever produced, you must view it here:

 you will then better understand and appreciate the bio.  we had fun with it.  and wes, we have your scout.  you need her.   {i love the birds bit because scout is crazy about pigeons.  couldn't fit that in the bio.}

can you hear me now?

i also created this team treasury this morning for the weekly challenge - since i enjoyed last week's project so much.  i titled this: can you hear me now? because a sprint rep contacted our eco etsy team leader about creating an app that will allow phone users to access our team blog page.  you can visit the actual treasury HERE

ps.  google 'sketchbook project'  if you'd like to learn more about it.  this is scout's first entry.  i will join in next year.  we were moving during the creation time so i reluctantly had to pass this year.  her book is incredible.  the tour arrives here in austin on march 12th.  can't wait to go see it.
sweet dreams, everyone.  thanks for stopping by.   until tomorrow.  happiness to you. from me. with heart.   ox joon

2.3.11 ... melmac impressions

today's project is a perfect example of my creative style. i have no idea seconds before i begin something what on earth i will be getting into. i was making listing notes about some melmac dinnerware i am going to add to my joonE vintage shop when i saw the company logos as potential rubbings. because i really love the designs and fonts. and i am always drawn to anything made in the u.s.a.

i only had a chance to play around for a few minutes. i will spend more time having fun with this tomorrow. these three are my favorites from today. the third one is from another brand. these rubbings are tricky because of the edges. i am experimenting with various papers, crayons and pencils. i will perservere. and i look forward to seeing what i decide to do with the rubbings.

to be continued...

and here is a little packaging from today that i enjoyed. those stickers. dude. addicting.

1.20.11 ... little birdies coaster

i love these vintage tea towels i found years ago and have doled out the pieces sparingly. this bit was peeking out at me today as i walked by my neatly formed stacks of fabric and this is what came to me. i needed a coaster, too. inside is batting in the form of a vintage mattress pad cover that lost its primary occupation many moons ago. all around, a quick, fun daily project.

i'm still working on my zine and a few other longer term projects. looking forward to sharing those with you another day.

if any of you have a homemaking question for my zine columnist, the flying housewife, please leave it in the comments here. {there's a bit of a hint to the theme of my new zine.}
