Fred Thompson Kicks Gandhi's Ass

Fred Thompson has not decided whether he is running for President yet, but he has already come out swinging like a presidential candidate. Giving us a preview of what his campaign would be like, Thompson has launched a no-holds-barred attack on a formidable foe. His target: Mahatma Gandhi. In a piece in the National Review called "Gandhi's Way Isn't the American Way" Thompson kicks Gandhi's ass in a way that is sure to have liberals and terrorists who read the National Review running scared. Just as tough as he appears to be in the movies and on TV's Law & Order, Thompson is not the kind of guy who goes in for easy victories by knocking down straw men.

According to Thompson, Gandhi, who led India to independence through non-violent civil disobedience, "is pretty much the symbol of the anti-war movement." Thompson knows this because members of Code Pink, an anti-war group protesting in front of the home of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, have erected a papier-mâché statue of Gandhi and some people have held up signs saying "What Would Gandhi Do?" at anti-war demonstrations. While some people might dismiss these protesters as fringe elements of the anti-war movement, Thompson knows that they represent the heart and soul of liberalism, and that the only way to beat them is to knock their papier-mâché Gandhi down. "At what point is it okay to fight dictators like Saddam or the al Qaeda terrorists who want to take his place?" asks Thompson. "It turns out that the answer, according to Gandhi, is NEVER."

Gandhi apparently took the whole non-violence thing much too far. Instead of joining the British army to fight the Nazis in World War II, he continued his protests against British rule in India and got himself locked up in a British prison for two years. Thompson also points out that Gandhi even stuck to his principles when it came to the Holocaust. He believed that Jews in Germany should have committed suicide en masse because it "would have aroused the world and the people of Germany to Hitler's violence." It's a good thing Jews stuck to the plan they had instead of following Gandhi's advice, or a lot more of them would have died in the Holocaust.

"The so-called peace movement certainly has the right to make Gandhi's way their way, but their efforts to make collective suicide American foreign policy just won't cut it in this country," says Thompson. If Gandhi had his way the more than 3,000 soldiers who died in Iraq would have just killed themselves instead, which would have accomplished nothing. Liberals who oppose the War in Iraq apparently want our soldiers to stage sit-down strikes instead of military strikes. They think peaceful protests will make the terrorists cry uncle. Thompson doesn't share these liberals' simplistic views. He knows there are only two solutions to the situation in Iraq: victory or surrender.

Even George Bush has succumbed to this rampant Gandhi hero-worship, stopping at a shrine to Gandhi when he visited India last year to sign a treaty to help them develop nuclear weapons more efficiently by going around the silly Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which will help make us safer. Maybe Bush didn't know how suicidally dangerous Gandhi's ideas are and was just being polite. Gandhi even wanted to make peace with Muslims, which wasn't any more successful then than it would be now.

Gandhi might be a hero to some people, but not to Fred Thompson. "When American's [sic] think of heroism, we think of the young American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, risking their lives to prevent another Adolph Hitler or Saddam Hussein." By opposing the war in Iraq liberals are, like Gandhi, on the side of Hitler.

The time Fred Thompson spent in Hollywood has given him a better understanding than perhaps any other presidential candidate of those who want to destroy our country; that is, liberals. Having spent so much of his career working with liberals, Thompson has a sophisticated, nuanced view of liberalism and doesn't have to exaggerate to make the threat they represent apparent. By the way, it should come as no surprise that liberals in Hollywood once produced a movie about Gandhi, which made him out to be a hero, and even gave it an Oscar.

Thompson first learned of the maleficent influence of Gandhi and his un-American ideas back in the 1960s when he was a young lawyer in Tennessee. One of Gandhi's followers was Martin Luther King, who caused a great deal of havoc in Thompson's part of the country with all of his non-violent protests. King was in Tennessee fomenting trouble with striking garbage collectors when he was killed in 1968. Like one of King's adversaries in the Civil Rights movement, H. Rap Brown, who said "Violence is as American as cherry pie," Thompson knows that Gandhi's dangerous ideas about non-violence don't belong here. Thompson is opposed to gun control, as Brown no doubt was, and he voted against background checks at gun shows. Thompson also voted against a law restricting violent videos for minors, believing that our young people need to learn American values early.

Instead of running a "suicidal foreign policy" Thompson, who supported Bush's surge plan, would continue the very same foreign policy we have now. And not only will he not be turning the other cheek in response to terrorism, he will also bring good Christian values to the White House. Thompson opposes gay marriage and protecting gays from job discrimination and he voted against including sexual orientation in hate crime laws. Thompson's Christian compassion is especially notable in his passionate support of Scooter Libby, whose defense fund he sits on.

I don't know where Gandhi got all of his subversive ideas about non-violence, but they most certainly are not welcome in this country. We need a President like Fred Thompson who will support good-old American Christian values instead of un-American Gandhi values.

I notice that you in the first paragraph seem to distinguish between liberals and terrorists. And yes i can see how not all terrorist are liberals, and that nuance is important i guess, but i still think it's somewhat overdone in this instance. You're after all not writing for a gay terrorist family and gun hating training camp like an ivy league uni or anything like that.

Otherwise as allways a brilliant piece Mr Swift. As a worried outside observer (Danish) of American politics your brave voice and thoughtfull analysis is very much appreciated. It's shows that there is another US than the soft liberal homosexual and "peace" loving America we usually see over here.

As H Rap may have said...(I think he expired in his last "shoot out" a few years ago, or went to jail or something like that). Any how, if more tough guy silver screen conservatives like Fred actually went to the "front" maybe we could get to the bottom of the complexities of this "victory" or "defeat" ideology.

Fred Thompson is like bacteria in the scheme of things, just like George Bush was before 2000. The end of America will come because it lets lesser men lead its masses. Small men with small minds will bring this great country down which was built by great thinkers and visionaries. In India, Gandhi is known as the 'father of the nation'. I doubt if Fred Thompsons own children are proud enough to call him father.

What stands out to me is the blind eye turned toward the pacifist movement's adoption of Christian principles and iconography, which I would estimate is nearly equal to their adoption of Gandhi. Is Gandhi being used as a "safe" Jesus analog here? Why not call Him out on His similar philosophy? I'm not being facetious; I don't think Mr. Thompson's original article was unreasonable at all. I'd just really like to hear a similar conservative analysis of Christ. (With Matthew 10:34 disqualified from the discussion, obviously.)

It's amazing to see someone interpret Ghandi so poorly.

"Ghandi whould have those 3000 soldiers commit suicide"

That one statement betrays Thompson's utter ignorance regarding both Ghandi's teachings and America's placein history and the world right now.

Thompson actually sounds just like the deluded kool-aide drinkers at the right-wing's coolest hangouts like redstate or lgf. Totally divorced from reality...but to you guys,he makes perfect sense. I hope for your sake that reality never catches up with you, because the cognitive dissonance will make your heads explode.

"Thompson doesn't share these liberals' simplistic views. He knows there are only two solutions to the situation in Iraq: victory or surrender"

Because reducing our future in Iraq to two options: victory or surrender, is so non-simplistic and complex that democrats just don't understand it!

Stupid simplistic liberals, worrying about the complex interactions between sunni, shia, foreign fighters, local police, the interests of other players in the region, the real long term effects of our actions, how you define victory, etc.... all that is just totally irrelevant for Jack... he knows the COMPLEX reality that only two things are possible: victory and failure. None of that other stuff matters...because it's too simplistic for Jack.

Right.....if it weren't so sad, it would be hilarious!

So If the relatives and supporters of the 1 lakh people died are not one the Gandhian way , defiately there wont be any America left .

If a persons death can only be equalled by killing 10 people , there wont be any world left over .

Not even demons would dare to evoke the Lord's name. They fear the power He can invoke. You are just ignorant fools! Does your version of Jesus' life have him hacking and slashing his way through his Roman oppressors? Did Jesus scream for his Father to rain down fireballs on villages that refused his presence? Did Jesus, in his final hours on the cross, damn the people who put him up there? Believe what you want about the righteousness of the use of violence, but don't dare to evoke the name of the Lord while doing it, lest you want to provoke the wrath of God down upon us all!

This is satire, right?

If not, let me just say that based on what I'm seeing, Jesus is going to kick America's ass.

Blasphemy rates pretty high on the "vengence is mine...." scale, and Americans preverting the words of Christ to support an illegal and immoral war invite destruction.

Of course anyone stupid enough to listen to Rush and Fox wouldn't understand. That is why I assume satire is the word for the day.

" ... As a worried outside observer (Danish) of American politics your brave voice and thoughtfull analysis is very much appreciated. It's shows that there is another US than the soft liberal homosexual and "peace" loving America we usually see over here."

Frederick, in case you didn't know it, what you have been reading is a kind of parody. ("... a literary or musical work in which the style of an author or work is closely imitated for comic effect or in ridicule 2 : a feeble or ridiculous imitation")

Jon is attempting to spoof ("transitive verb ... HOAX , DECEPTION") conservative opinion in general; and, conservative opinion as it might be observed on Internet web logs, in particular.

Jon obviously believes that this satirical (" a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn") effort will serve to produce certain effects.

But we all can see how difficult his task is, and how far from certain the production of these anticipated effects are. You, after all, seem to have taken it quite seriously.

Or maybe fredrick, you haven't. Maybe you are merely trying your own hand at little caricature ("...exaggeration by means of often ludicrous distortion of parts or characteristics"), and have been misunderstood by fellow lefties as a result.

But that would just reinforce the main point wouldn't it ...

Over-use of any "surprise" technique inevitably leads to very predictable results.

What begins as a program of satire, devolves into a kind of futile striving, an inadvertant self-parody. Finally, the whole satirical enterprise collapses into stale farce.

Technically, Jon has reached this point already.

It is evident that most of the commenter here and the original poster have not read much of Gandhi's writings.

It is certain John Thompson hasn't read much of Gandhi either.

A good read is Gandhi's book on Pacifism. Gandhi was not a pacifist. He practiced non-violent resistance, and there is a difference. He makes his views very clear.

Gandhi and Martin Luther King emulate what they believe the teachings of Jesus to be.

The war mongering Jesus of the Republican party and Fred Thompson is not the Jesus of the Bible.

Thank you for allowing me to comment.

Gaurav said...

Great point, Bruce, about the difference between pacifism and non-violence resistance. Not many people understand it. one of Gandhi's most under-quoted quotes is - "Given the choice between violence and cowardice, i would choose violence". When Pakistan attacked India over Kashmir in 1947, he did not say indian soldiers should just lay down arms and embrace death. His opinion on the matter was very pragmatic and nuanced. Read his speech here. The speech demolishes the great and knowledgeable Fred Thompson's assumptions about the "Gandhian way" for Iraq.

So yes, Gandhi was no dreamy-eyed pacifist, not the way most pacificsts are at least.

He was a very smart man. The Salt Protest is the best example. Even Nehru has written that when Gandhi proposed the idea for the salt protest march, everyone thought he had lost it. Gone crazy. Yet as events unfolded, everyone including Nehru realized how right Gandhi was.

Young people (and many adults) often don't have the capacity to determine the difference between funny and unfunny so I think that we need to start teaching our youth about comedy in the schools. They need to learn that the number one rule of comedy is that a "joke" should be funny. They need to be taught the difference between laughing at and laughing with someone. And they should be taught to avoid satire, which only confuses people and saps the national will.

I hope that clarifies matters for everyone.

It was not long after the Johannesburg meeting when Gandhi read Thoreau's Essay on Civil Disobedience, the same essay that would later influence King. The essay provided Gandhi with a means for articulating his concept for nonviolent resistance in English. Inspired by Thoreau's insistence on disobeying unjust policies, Gandhi spent the next seven years leading the struggle on behalf of the Indian minority in South Africa. This philosophy also influenced Gandhi's thinking about India, as expressed in Hind Swaraj (Indian Home Rule), a 1909 booklet outlining his early thoughts regarding Indian independence. Gandhi wrote that "violence was no remedy for India's ills” and that the country's civilization "required the use of a different and higher weapon for self-protection."

I congratulate you on your complete ability to miss the point. Let's consider this comment:

It's a good thing Jews stuck to the plan they had instead of following Gandhi's advice, or a lot more of them would have died in the Holocaust.

Are you really so blind that you think there wasn't a better option available to them? You know: fighting back? Like they did in Warsaw?

Ghandi's "advice" to the Jews was pathetic, worthless, dishonest, and forced on him by his pathetic and wrong-headed philosophy.

Let's address the "dishonest" first: What happens after the Jews "aroused the world and the people of Germany to Hitler's violence"? Two possibilities:

1: Everyone else does the same thing (commits suicide), giving the Nazis the Lebensraum they desired.

2: People decide to use violence to stop Hitler (so much for "no violence").

So, please explain how either result is better than the result that follows from the Jews deciding, early in the slaughter, that they are going to fight back and kill as many Nazis as they can?

But that's what you're stuck with when you confine yourself to the evil of non-violence.

"Non-violence" is completely worthless when fighting evil. It was useless against the Nazis, it was worthless against Stalin, it was worthless at Tianamen Square. It is the policy of the free-loader, one who depends on others to take care of him, and do the actual work of defeating evil.

All the babel in the word can't hind that. No mater how hard you try

douglas said...

Ghandi is so misunderstood. He believed in non-violence as a tactic, he was not a pacifist.

Ghandi:
"I do believe that, where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done, had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908, whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force, which he could and wanted to use, and defended me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion, and the late war. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor."

You said..."I don't know where Gandhi got all of his subversive ideas about non-violence, but they most certainly are not welcome in this country."

Answer: from one of the most respected philosphers in the United States, American Henry David Thoreau, who wrote about civil disobedience in 1849 in Massachusetts. Both Gandhi and MLKing were inspired by him. Americans know Thoreau primarily as the author of Walden, but it is 'Civil Disobedience' that established his reputation in the wider political world. It is one of the most influential political tracts ever written by an American."

So much of what you and Fred Thompson said about Gandhi is completely untrue or misleading.
